The iris-reading technology would let users authenticate their biometrics just by looking at phone having a special IRIS camera and LeD. <keyword id="6383835" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delta">Delta</keyword> ID is a specialized maker of ActiveIRIS technology and have passed <keyword id="3205447" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="STQC">STQC</keyword> performance test for Aadhaar authentication. 
 "We are having discussions with Reliance, Intex, Lava and Micromax. We believe Chinese brands like <keyword id="1188106" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gionee">Gionee</keyword>, Vivo and Oppo would also be interested in such an IRiS-based software for Aadhaar-based authentication," <keyword id="3558093" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="salil-prabhakar">Salil Prabhakar</keyword>, chief executive of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/This-top-executive-from-Ola-has-released-a-striking-app-which-tells-you-how-good-or-bad-the-roads-are/articleshow/53924926.cms">Delta ID</a> told the <keyword id="6474066" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-times">Economic Times</keyword>. 
 
"There is huge interest across the board for it. The technology would enable a user to authenticate his Aadhaar details by looking at a phone having a special IRIS camera and LeD. "ActiveIRIS is a powerful biometric identifier and this can be a game-changing feature in phones helping establish the identity of a person. At Intex, we are in talks with UIDAI and are evaluating the same," Intex Director <keyword id="366460" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Keshav-Bansal">Keshav Bansal</keyword> told the financial daily.

<keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> is all set to disrupt another market by launching its 4G VoLTE feature phone. In this, <keyword id="6366627" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intex">Intex</keyword> will be making the phone in India and has signed up Reliance Jio as a vendor. Intex won’t be involved in pricing and marketing of the feature phone. "We will launch this 4G feature phone in this quarter, but will not be selling it standalone in the market. We are in dialogue with Reliance Jio for bundling which should be through very soon,” Nidhi Markanday, director and business head, Intex Technologies, told ET. Reliance Jio is sourcing phones from multiple vendors and will launch the phone in a few days. Markanday told ET, "Jio has given us a ballpark figure. Initially we will not be going in a big way as we first want to test the waters.” Besides, Indian handset makers, <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> and Lava, which have launched its VoLTE feature phone, have also said that they are in talks with Jio for bundled offers for 4G feature phones.

The new feature phone from Reliance Jio is expected to once again shake the industry to its core but this time around the massive disruption will be felt not just by the telecom sector but other industries too. Here’s a look at Jio Phone’s impact on some key industries. 
 
Telecom Industry Reliance Jio has just about started to test its new feature phone; incumbent operators in the telecom industry are still adjusting to the major ripples created by Jio services, and it should get ready for yet another storm. With the Jio phone, the telecom industry can expect another set of major tariff cuts considering Jio phone will come bundled with Jio sim. Customers will have to recharge with a <keyword id="4405573" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-dhan-dhana-dhan">Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan</keyword> monthly pack of Rs. 153, which will give them free voice, texts, unlimited data (high-speed data capped at 500MB per day), free access to Jio apps for 28 days along with a device that’s “effectively free”. Smartphone Industry 
We all saw what happened to the telecom sector after Jio’s entry and we can certainly expect a similar kind of disruption in the low-end smartphone market as well. While India is the fastest growing smartphone market in the world, almost 50% of the mobile phone users in India still use feature phones. That’s a huge number and a market to ignore. Mukesh Ambani made it clear in his AGM speech that he is looking to capture the feature phone market of India with his new phone, reason why the new phone is specifically designed for the ‘feature phone’ market of India. The device comes with 2.4-inch display with QVGA display, microSD card slot, torchlight, FM radio, supports voice commands in 22 Indian languages, has a panic button and comes with advanced NFC support for digital payments. With Jio aiming to deliver 5 million units every week to consumers across the country, low-end smartphone companies like Intex, Micromax, Lava will have to match up to the new Jio phone that will be sold for Rs. 1500 which will be refunded at the end of three years. The Low-end manufacturers are certain to feel the Jio heat and it may not be limited to the low end device manufacturers but also companies selling smartphones under Rs. 5000. Jio’s new phone is packaged in a way that makes it the perfect device to introduce both smartphone and 4G network to the feature phone market of the country. 
 
DTH Market The DTH industry in India is already trying to keep up with internet video services like <keyword id="128682" type="TOPIC" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, Hotstar, Voot and many others, now the sector needs to watch out for the disruption from Jio Phone. Jio phone will come pre-loaded with all Jio apps including Jio TV, Jio Cinema, Jio Music etc making the phone an all in one entertainment device, meaning Jio Phone can very easily turn into a DTH device in itself by simply topping up for Rs. 309 per month. It’s also important to note that Mukesh Ambani specially talked about one key accessory with the phone during the Jio Phone announcement, he said that Jio phone will come with "<keyword id="4964079" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-phone-tv-cable">Jio Phone TV-Cable</keyword>" that will allow users to connect their phones to TV, even the ‘non-smart’ TVs. This attachment with the phone is a clear hint that Jio wants the new phone to be an overall entertainment device and not just a phone. And streaming entertainment from phone and blasting it on to TV could potentially be a better deal as it will free the users from setting up expensive hardware and paying costly monthly charges. 
 
As we get closer to the launch date, all these industries will have to get back to their drawing boards and create products that can give a tough fight to the latest from Reliance Jio, the Jio phone. Within a year, Jio has managed to add 125 million subscribers to its network and according to analysts, Reliance Jio with get its next 100 million users from its new feature phone.

And now <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword> has partnered with 19 smartphone makers lapping up over 3million subscribers even before its commercial launch. This is not going down well with the telcos, we spoke to industry body <keyword id="6373028" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="COAI">COAI</keyword> who is of the view that Jio is playing an unfair game and COAI members (including <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>, Vodafone, Idea) will no longer extend their interconnect capacity to Jio as they don’t consider Jio as a full fledge telecom operator until they stop their free trial testing and commercially launch their services. 
 Mukesh Ambani announced the testing of Reliance Jio services on December 27th, which incidentally is Dhirubhai Ambani's birth anniversary. The test started with employees only free trial offer but soon it was extended to retail consumers through a bundled offer with Jio's range of Lyf mobiles. And now, Jio’s 90 days free trial offer can be availed with the purchase of 19 smartphone brands including <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, LG, Panasonic, ASUS, Gionee, Karbonn, Lava, Xolo, Videocon, Sansui, Sony, Micromax, YU, Alcatel, TCL, Vivo, Intex and HTC. This fast growing Jio’s ‘free service’ partnership with smartphone makers is adding more fire to the never ending war of words with the existing telecom operators in the country over Jio's trial offer. Telecom operators <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Airtel-Vodafone-Ideas-asks-govt-to-stop-Jios-free-data-trial-offer/articleshow/53647221.cms">have written to the top govt offices</a> including the PMO about Jio's three month free trial offer and how it's helping Jio poach their customers. 
 
Now with Jio growing bigger by the day without having launched their services commercially, telcos have taken a stern stand to stop providing any further interconnect capacity to Relaince Jio. This move can potentially hurt Reliance Jio’s voice services as it is already a huge concern for Jio “It would clearly not be prudent for RJIL to contemplate launching of commercial services with this level of call failures” Jio had said. While telecom operators like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea have claimed that they have provided Jio with enough interconnect capacity to meet the usual demand of 15 to 20 million customers and now the industry will not extend the interconnect capacity any further until Jio enters the market as a full-fledge telecom player. With the growing number of Jio subscribers this could lead to a huge concern for Reliance Jio and not to mention yet another spark in this never ending battle.

Guess who’s fuelling Modi’s ‘Make in India’ dream? Well, it’s none other than Mukesh Ambani. His venture Reliance Jio Infocomm has asked the handset makers to make 4G phones in India. If the manufacturers make phones in India, Reliance has agreed to buy all handsets and sell via them. 
 
Reliance Jio, which will be providing broadband Internet in India through LTE, will enable 4G connectivity. 
 
The telecom company is already planning to take this to the next level and is in talks with Micromax, Lava, Karbonn, Intex, and Lenovo. While some of the handset manufacturers are already setting up production base in the country, experts believe, this move will also help the manufacturers keep the phone prices reasonable as these will be manufactured locally. 
 
Micromax, Lava, Karbonn, and Intex are planning manufacturing units in India, with production set to commence in the next six months to a year. 
 
Jio has signed deals with Chinese handset makers Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel OneTouch (TCL Communications), CK-Telecom and Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment-owned K-Touch for procurement of smartphones for the company's consumer electronics brand, ReConnect, which will sell 4G handsets across India. 
 
Devices under the ReConnect brand will be priced between 4,000 and 25,000, they said. Jio has said it would ensure availability of under Rs 5,000 4G smartphones coinciding with its services launch. 
 
The company had promised that if there was any gap between demand and supply of smartphones at a particular price level, it could bridge the gap with its own brand under Reliance Retail. 
 
Under the partnership with Jio, companies like Huawei, ZTE, and Alcatel OneTouch will also provide dongles, routers and other broadband products aimed at homes and small office or home office customers. 
 
Reliance Jio is expected to be launched in December this year.

Most of the Samsung smartphones that Indians have in their hands today, along with the ones from home-grown brand like Karbonn, Lava or Intex, are being 'Made in India,' with high chances that they were assembled in the <keyword id="18858" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Noida">Noida</keyword>-Greater Noida region, the Uttar Pradesh industrial city neighbouring Delhi. 
 
Last year’s budget announced a 10.5% duty differential between imported devices and the ones made in India, after which Noida became the country’s biggest smartphone hub, being able to make more than 140 million devices per year, a whopping 40% more than what’s needed in a year. 
 
Even though all the critical components of a smartphone, processors for example, still come from China and Taiwan , Noida still remains a key part for the industry, with the local industry giving about 5-8% of value addition at present, which can be taken up to around 35% in coming five years. 
 
It all started with Samsung starting local manufacturing a decade ago, seeding a significant number of smartphone component suppliers from Noida. 
 
"All our mobile phones, from feature phones to the Galaxy S7 that we sell in India, are manufactured at our Noida factory, and we will continue to explore future investment opportunities," a spokesperson for Samsung told TNN. 
 
Now, Noida is home to the units of several Indian brands like Lava, Intex and Karbonn, along with Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron, which is making phones for LG, OnePlus, Oppo and HTC in partnership with home-grown telecom retailer and manufacturer Optiemus. Each factory set up in the city creates 3,000-4,000 direct jobs for mostly high-school or ITI graduates. 
 
Even though UP is not generally regarded as the best place to do business, the fact that Noida shares borders with Delhi has helped it bloom. 
 
Now that there are efforts being made to develop R&amp;D and design capabilities in India so that the reliance on partners in China and Taiwan can be lessened, Noida is all set to grow even further. 
 
"Electronics manufacturing is a focus of the government as part of the 'Make in India' initiative. The current investments have resulted in as many as 40,000 direct jobs and over 1.2 lakh indirect employment. We estimate that mobile phone production will reach a level of around 500 million devices by 2019-20," said IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

After <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bharti+airtel">Bharti Airtel</a> rolled out its 4G services and upcoming launch of Mukesh Ambani's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Jio+Infocomm">Reliance Jio Infocomm</a>, the demand for 4G has gone up. 
 Shubhajit Sen, chief marketing officer at <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> Informatics, said the company will be launching around five new <keyword id="1948108" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G-smartphones">4G smartphones</keyword> across varied price points and specifications to address needs of the diverse consumer set. 
 
This festive season will also see spurt in online sales. The online-only smartphone sales have contributed to more than 20% of the total smartphone sales between July and September so far, according to Counterpoint Research. 
 "We soon plan to launch our new premium range of Xperia Z series <keyword id="6354775" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smartphones">smartphones</keyword> in India, alongside global launch. Sony will pump in a total of Rs 250 crore towards marketing during the festive season," said Taro Yamamoto, head, Xperia division, <keyword id="233026" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sony-India">Sony India</keyword>. 
 <keyword id="6356116" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="LG">LG</keyword> has also earmarked nearly Rs 30 crore for marketing spend around Diwali this year and is expected 40-50% boost in sales. 
 
Indian vendors like Intex, Lava and Karbonn are also betting big on the season ahead and expecting to sell around 1 million smartphones. 
 
China's Gionee, which has ventured with Foxconn and Dixon to kick-off domestic production of handsets, will be spending around Rs 50 crore in marketing during the festive season with three new 4G models planned. 
 
Counterpoint has estimated 24% and 26% sequential growth in overall and smartphone market in the third quarter of 2015. In the October-December quarter, the growth is expected to continue because of Diwali falling near mid-November apart from other market forces and competitive landscape like Reliance Jio LTE launch and growth of ecommerce channel.
