In a major step toward protecting students and their families, the Indian government has issued new guidelines aimed at curbing misleading advertisements by coaching centres. The Centre's crackdown addresses exaggerated claims like “100% selection” or “guaranteed job security” — promises that often lead to disappointment among students who invest time and money expecting a near-certain outcome. <h2>Protecting consumers, not shutting down coaching</h2>On Wednesday, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) rolled out these guidelines in response to numerous complaints from the National Consumer Helpline. According to <keyword id="20003684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-affairs" source="keywords">Consumer Affairs</keyword> Secretary Nidhi Khare, the government’s goal is not to shut down coaching centres but to ensure their ads don’t “undermine consumer rights.” “We have seen coaching centres deliberately concealing information from prospective students,” Khare said. “Therefore, we have come out with the guidelines to provide guidance to people involved in the coaching industry.” So far, the CCPA has issued 54 notices to violators and imposed penalties of around Rs 54.60 lakh. <h2>What’s prohibited?</h2>The guidelines lay out strict boundaries on what coaching centres can — and cannot — say in their ads. Here’s what the guidelines address: <ul><li>False Claims: Ads should not make unsubstantiated promises about “100% selection” or “100% job security.”</li><li>Course Details: No exaggerating or omitting information about courses, their duration, or outcomes.</li><li>Faculty Credentials: Qualifications of teachers must be presented accurately, with no fake credentials.</li><li>Fees and Refunds: All fees and refund policies must be transparent.</li><li>Selection Rates and Ranks: Coaching centres cannot claim high selection rates or exam rankings without proof.</li></ul>Additionally, they are not allowed to use successful candidates’ names, photos, or testimonials in ads without written consent from these individuals. Khare advised students to double-check the information provided by coaching centres. “Many UPSC students clear prelims and mains on their own and take only interview guidance from coaching centres,” she explained, encouraging students to verify the course details actually taken by successful candidates. The guidelines go beyond the broad term “coaching.” They define coaching as academic support, education, guidance, study programs, and tuition — but they exclude counselling, sports, and creative activities. The purpose of this definition is to keep the focus on academic and career-oriented programs, which are most prone to misleading ads. <h2>Full disclosure and consequences for violators</h2>Transparency is now mandatory, as coaching centres must display disclaimers and reveal essential course details. Facilities, infrastructure, and resources must be represented accurately, along with any required approvals or recognitions from authorities like AICTE or UGC. Khare, who also serves as the CCPA chief, stressed that coaching centres should accurately present the service, resources, and infrastructure provided. For instance, if they advertise “fully-equipped classrooms,” the guidelines require this to be an honest description. These guidelines come as a supplement to existing laws and are enforceable under the Consumer Protection Act. This means violators will face penalties, potentially similar to the Rs 54.60 lakh already imposed by the CCPA. The stock of Reliance Power dropped 4.99 per cent to hit the lower circuit limit of Rs 32.73 on the BSE. Shares of Reliance Home Finance Ltd tumbled 4.93 per cent to Rs 4.24 -- the lowest trading permissible limit for the day. Reliance Communications dived 4.92 per cent to touch the lower circuit of Rs 2.32. Reliance Infrastructure also declined 2.90 per cent to Rs 205.55. Shares of Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Home Finance and Reliance Power had slumped on Friday also. Sebi has imposed a penalty of Rs 25 crore on Ambani and restrained him from serving as a director or Key Managerial Personnel (KMP) in any listed company or Sebi-registered entity for five years. Besides, a fine ranging Rs 21 crore to Rs 25 crore has been levied on 24 entities. Also, the regulator barred Reliance Home Finance from the securities market for six months and slapped a fine of Rs 6 lakh on it. After receiving multiple complaints alleging the diversion/siphoning of funds of Reliance Home Finance Ltd, Sebi conducted an investigation for the period of FY 2018-19 to ascertain any regulatory violations. In its probe, Sebi found that <keyword id="19902194" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anil-Ambani" source="keywords">Anil Ambani</keyword>, with the help of RHFL's KMPs -- Amit Bapna, Ravindra Sudhalkar and Pinkesh R Shah -- have orchestrated a fraudulent scheme to "siphon off" funds from RHFL by disguising them as loans to entities linked to him. Although the board of directors of RHFL had issued strong directives to stop such lending practices and review corporate loans regularly, the company's management ignored these orders. Sebi, in its 222-page order on Thursday, noted the cavalier approach by the company's management and promoter in approving loans worth hundreds of crores to companies that had little to no assets, cash flow, net worth, or revenue. This suggests a sinister objective behind the 'loans'. The situation becomes even more suspicious when considering that many of these borrowers were closely linked to the promoters of RHFL. Eventually, most of these borrowers failed to repay their loans, causing RHFL to default on its own debt obligations. This led to the company's resolution under the RBI Framework, leaving its public shareholders in a difficult position.

Reliance Home Finance, Reliance Power shares hit lower circuit limits

The company's market valuation also surged Rs 42,399.24 crore to Rs 20,60,461.42 crore. <keyword id="10926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance" source="Orion">Reliance</keyword>, the nation's most valuable company, had last issued bonus shares in September 2017. "A meeting of the Board of Directors of the company is scheduled to be held on Thursday, September 5, 2024, to consider and recommend to the shareholders for their approval, issue of bonus shares in the ratio of 1:1 to the equity shareholders of the company by capitalisation of reserves," the firm said in the stock exchange filing. Prior to the 1:1 bonus issue in 2017, Reliance had in 2009 issued 1:1 bonus share.

The other bidders on the list included ACME Cleantech Solutions Private Limited, Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies Private Limited, Anvi Power Industries Private Limited, <keyword id="21402810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lucas-TVS" source="keywords">Lucas TVS</keyword> Limited, and Waaree Energies Limited. The bids for manufacturing facilities with a cumulative capacity of 70 GWh came in response to a global tender issued by the Heavy Industries Ministry on January 24 this year. "The scheme received an overwhelming response from industry as bids received is 7 times the manufacturing capacity of 10 GWh to be awarded," the ministry stated. The ministry had announced the re-bidding of Production Linked Incentives (PLI) for 10 GWh <keyword id="20049274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Advanced-Chemistry-Cell" source="keywords">Advanced Chemistry Cell</keyword> (ACC) manufacturing. The pre-bid meeting was held on 12 February. The last date for receiving applications was April 22 and the technical bids were opened on Tuesday. In May 2021, the Union Cabinet had approved the PLI scheme for the National Programme on ACC battery storage with an outlay of Rs 18,100 crore. The scheme aims to achieve domestic manufacturing capacity of 50 Giga Watt hours (GWh) of battery storage. The first round of bidding was concluded in March 2022 and three companies were allocated a total capacity of 30 GWh. The agreement with selected companies was signed in July 2022. Reliance, JSW Neo Energy and 5 others bid for govt incentives to set up battery manufacturing units

New Delhi: <keyword id="19902194" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anil-Ambani" source="keywords">Anil Ambani</keyword> is reviewing a <keyword id="20738747" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sebi-order" source="keywords">Sebi order</keyword> imposing a fine and banning him from capital markets for five years in an alleged fund diversion case and will take appropriate next steps as legally advised, his spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday. <keyword id="19898589" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ambani" source="keywords">Ambani</keyword>, the spokesperson in a statement said, had resigned from the board of <keyword id="21260537" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Infrastructure-Ltd" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reliance Infrastructure Ltd" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Reliance Infrastructure Ltd">Reliance Infrastructure Ltd</keyword> and Reliance Power Ltd, pursuant to Sebi's interim order dated February 11, 2022 in the matter pertaining to Reliance Home Finance Ltd. He "is in compliance with the said interim order (of February 11, 2022) for the last two and half years," the statement said. On the August 22 order that banned him and 24 others from the securities market for five years on charges of diversion of funds, the spokesperson said, "Mr Ambani is reviewing the final order dated August 22, 2024 passed by Sebi in the said matter, and will take appropriate next steps as legally advised." The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) had also imposed a fine of Rs 25 crore on Ambani, saying he orchestrated a scheme to "siphon off" funds from Reliance Home Finance, a listed subsidiary of conglomerate <keyword id="20479923" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Group" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reliance Group" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Reliance Group">Reliance Group</keyword> of which he is chairman. The ban means that he and the other 24 will not be able to access the securities market and are prohibited from buying, selling or otherwise dealing in securities, directly or indirectly. In a separate statement, Mumbai-listed Reliance Infrastructure Ltd said it "was not a noticee or party to the proceedings before Sebi in which the order is passed. No directions are given in the order against Reliance Infrastructure Ltd". "Mr Ambani had resigned from the board of directors of Reliance Infrastructure Ltd pursuant to the interim order dated February 11, 2022 passed by Sebi in the same proceedings. Therefore, the order dated August 22, 2024 passed by Sebi has no bearing whatsoever on the business and affairs of Reliance Infrastructure Ltd," it said. Reliance Power, the other listed company of Anil Ambani's group, also issued a similar statement saying Ambani had resigned in 2022 and that the latest Sebi order has no bearing on it. Sebi in the August 22 order had stated that a "fraudulent" scheme "siphoned off" funds from Reliance Home Finance, which provides loans for housing and construction, by structuring them as loans to credit-unworthy borrowers. Most of these borrowers were linked to "promoters", the regulator had said. Anil Ambani and his elder brother Mukesh had in July 2006 split their father Dhirubhai Ambani-created Reliance Industries Ltd. Anil Ambani's Reliance Group spanned financial services, infrastructure and telecommunications while the elder brother got the traditional oil refining and petrochemicals business. Over the last few years, Anil Ambani has seen three of the largest firms within the group, including Reliance Communications, Reliance Capital, and Reliance Infrastructure, undergoing bankruptcy over unpaid debt. Sebi has charged that more than Rs 9,000 crore worth of loans from Reliance Home Finance were made to "nondescript borrowers who had no demonstrable financial ability to repay any of it". The other 24 banned include executives of Anil Ambani's Reliance Group and other unlisted companies connected to him.

The <keyword id="20026051" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Consumer-Affairs-Ministry" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Consumer Affairs Ministry" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Consumer Affairs Ministry">Consumer Affairs Ministry</keyword> is spearheading the initiative, which will provide a score on key parameters to inform consumers about the ease with which a product can be repaired, the officials said at a national workshop on the issue. Addressing the workshop, <keyword id="20003684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-affairs" source="keywords">Consumer Affairs</keyword> Secretary Nidhi Khare said: "As India emerges as the third largest economy in the world, we should have a vibrant and tech-savvy repair system." She also added, "India can become a repair hub for the world." The proposed index will be similar to initiatives in other countries, such as France's repairability index. It will rate products on criteria including availability of technical documents, ease of disassembly, spare parts availability and pricing. The workshop was aimed at establishing a consensus among industry stakeholders on "key parameters for accessing and evaluating repairability index" besides promoting longevity in product design, and democratizing repair information to enhance consumer experiences in reusing the mobile and <keyword id="19896834" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electronics" source="keywords">electronics</keyword> products they own. Additional Secretary Bharat Khera emphasized the need for transparent and affordable repair solutions, increased consumer awareness, and support for local repairers. Joint Secretary Anupam Mishra highlighted concerns about the lack of genuine spare parts in local markets, compatibility issues with product components, and the absence of information for consumers to repair their own devices. India plans repairability index for mobile, electronics to tackle e-waste

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Steve Martocci, cofounder of GroupMe, Blade, and Splice, is back with a new consumer health app.</li><li>His startup, SuppCo, helps people find trusted supplements and track their health progress.</li></ul>When Steve Martocci was still living in New York, the then-29-year-old GroupMe cofounder wanted to plan a date at the ultra-exclusive speakeasy Please Don't Tell.Getting a reservation at Please Don't Tell was no easy feat. New Yorkers hoping to sip cocktails at the East Village joint hidden behind a phone booth had to call right as the bar opened, and beat out the others doing the same, for any chance at a table.Martocci decided to solve his problem with code. He wrote a script that created dozens of phone numbers to call the bar's reception and then converge those lines into a conference call when an employee picked up one of the calls. His plan worked — he got the reservation, and then shared the application around to his friends for good measure."I only work on things that I really want to exist," he laughed.It's the same approach he's applied to the past three companies he's started: GroupMe, Blade, and Splice. GroupMe, which he built in TechCrunch Disrupt's 24-hour hackathon, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-groupme">sold to Skype</a> a year after its creation for $85 million when Martocci was 27. His second company, music production platform Splice, where Martocci <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starting-up-interview-steve-martocci-founder-of-groupme-blade-splice-2020-5">spent eight years as CEO</a>, has raised $160 million in venture capital, according to PitchBook. He also helped build the helicopter taxi company Blade, which <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ipo-edge.com/blade-completes-business-combination-becoming-the-first-publicly-traded-urban-air-mobility-company/">went public in 2021.</a>So when, at a dinner party, Martocci's friend said she'd spent four hours that day organizing her supplements — after Martocci had been struggling with his own health and building up a corresponding supplement routine for years — his wheels started spinning.Today, Martocci is unveiling his latest venture: an app that helps people find consumer-trusted supplements, create and manage supplement routines, and track their health progress over time.The startup, called SuppCo, just raised a $5.5 million seed round co-led by Union Square Ventures and True Ventures, and including BoxGroup and Compound.Martocci and his cofounder, Nick Michlewicz, are tapping into a complex, ever-growing market for dietary add-ins, including everything from Vitamin C to herbs to probiotics. It's a space wrought with criticism and flooded with cash — some estimates value the global dietary supplements market at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.grandviewresearch.com/industry-analysis/dietary-supplements-market-report">$180 billion</a> or more.Martocci's goal, he told Business Insider, is to help consumers take control of their health. Working with a functional medicine doctor, getting regular lab work, and undergoing plenty of trial-and-error, Martocci began incorporating over a dozen supplements into his daily routine and tracking them all in a spreadsheet.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.crnusa.org/newsroom/three-quarters-americans-take-dietary-supplements-most-users-agree-they-are-essential">majority of US adults</a> regularly take dietary supplements. But supplements aren't regulated in the US like other drugs are. Companies can start selling supplements often <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/rumor-control/facts-about-dietary-supplements">without even notifying</a> the Food and Drug Administration, and the onus is on the agency to find and crack down on bad actors already in the market.That's where SuppCo's TrustScores come into play. The startup says it's collected data on over 500 popular supplement brands, reviewing over 160,000 products on attributes, including their total ingredient lists and consumer reviews. Martocci said the startup plans to keep adding to those analyses, including by evaluating ingredients added into certain products that aren't the supplements themselves.SuppCo cofounder Michlewicz previously cofounded two supplement companies, WellPath and Grummies. But there hasn't really been a way to do that with, one, a good database to track what you're doing, and then more importantly, the ability share it and collaborate with other people," said Andy Weissman, managing partner at Union Square Ventures. "That way, you could probably solve a large part if not all of the kind of issues you're discussing, which are, is this good? Has anyone taken this? Is this good for me?"In the coming months and years, Martocci said SuppCo plans to use AI to comb through supplement research to strengthen the TrustScores, as well as to work with more experts, including doctors, scientists, and nutritionists.Right now, the beta version of SuppCo's app is free to everyone. While Martocci wouldn't disclose the details of how he wants SuppCo to make money, he says his goal is to create a "co-op-like membership model" that rewards the app's users for sticking to healthy habits over time.He clarified that SuppCo will never sell its users' data, and won't rely on ad revenue or notch partnerships with supplement companies. Martocci said he sees an opportunity to tap into the massive market with a new model that works with its customers rather than against them."I know there are really unique challenges in health, and there's going to be so much to deal with, but if anyone is prepared — having done what we did in music creation and building an incredible business there on the consumer side — I'm ready. I'm up for the challenge," he said.
