Reliance Consumer Products enters into strategic agreement with Sri Lankan biscuit maker Maliban

Reliance is a master at disrupting existing categories with its entry level pricing and innovative marketing models. Just recall the launch of Jio’s high speed broadband mobile services in 2016 for free. In the last six months, many Indians, both rural and urban, have been hit by high inflation and have been downtrading – that’s shifting to cheaper brands or even going for unbranded products. The FMCG market is in the most price-sensitive state it has even been in the last few years. Campa is targeting this growing market of downtraders, at a price that’s almost half of what other cola brands offer. “Yes, it caters to this trend,” agrees Harish Bijoor, founder of a consultancy firm, Harish Bijoor Consults, adding, “There is relevance for a lower-priced cola – a local cola with a friendly price versus an MNC cola with MNC prices.” “Penetration pricing can boost Campa’s traction among the price-sensitive Indian masses, especially in the rural markets. The aggressive pricing will magnify the impact of the relaunch amid the cost-of-living crisis, as 68% of Indian consumers are extremely concerned about the impact of inflation on their household budget,” says Bobby Verghese, consumer analyst at GlobalData. Price matters, but brand matters too Ambi Parameswaran, branding guru, author, and the former head of FCB Ulka, however, believes that it’s hard to beat established brands like Coca-Cola and Pepsi with a pricing strategy alone. “When you are drinking a cola, you are not just consuming a soft drink, you are consuming a branded experience. There have always been lower priced and local colas in the market but they found limited success. They (Reliance) will have to bring in celebrities and invest big money in marketing,” he adds. Reliance has launched Campa across three different flavours – cola, lemon and orange — which covers the entire gamut of soft drinks. “They launched one unified brand across flavours and that might work,” opines Parameswaran. Reliance also went with the slogan ‘The Great Indian Taste’ as it relaunched an iconic brand Campa which was once competitor to Parle’s Goldspot, Thums Up and Limca – the last two ended in the kitty of Coca-Cola, which made its comeback in the ‘90s. Campa, however, could not withstand the growing competition of Pepsi and Coca-Cola, and shut shop in 2000-01. After it was acquired in August last year, it’s Campa that now has a moneyed backer with marketing muscle and a giant retail footprint of 17,225 stores, offline. Reliance also retails groceries and more online and launched sales via WhatsApp six months back. It also owns a stake in Dunzo – a quick commerce retailer. “Reliance can also leverage its own offline retail and e-commerce stores to quickly narrow the gap with Coca-Cola and PepsiCo’s nationwide distribution networks and bolster Campa’s market penetration. In terms of pricing, Reliance Consumer can go toe-to-toe with multinational operators,” said Francis Gabriel Godad, business development manager, GlobalData India. Where is the footprint? Yet, the cola market is like no other FMCG brand. With the need for refrigeration and a rock solid distribution channel that Coca-Cola and Pepsi have built for years – this might be a tough act to follow if not break. “It’s not just pricing. They have to get distribution right and match the width of distribution that other colas have today. Colas retail differently – most of them are sold out of kirana stores, dhabas and others,” explained Bijoor. Reliance Retail’s footprint can drive the sales of large soda packages. “At home consumption only contributes to 20% of cola sales. The rest is purchased on-the-go,” says Parameswaran. Moreover, Pepsi and Coca-Cola have built their empires on the theory of exclusivity. For example, McDonald’s retails Coca-Cola (only) at its outlets and Burger King goes with Pepsi. In India, these brands have ‘owned’ dhabas and small-time restaurants where either of the brands’ products are retailed extensively. Since this is where most Indians eat, it also helped them make colas a part of Indian meals which matches with biryanis as easily as it does with burgers. Thanks to extensive marketing campaigns, they penetrated rural markets, killed local goli soda businesses and have become the ‘thanda’ of choice. Colas and cricket The third dimension of the cola business after price and distribution, is the ‘taste’. Even today, Thums Up is perceived as the ‘strong’ cola, with the other two colas close behind. Bijoor and Parameswaran say that with colas, it’s more about the brand than the taste and few people can recognize cola brands in a blind tasting. Yet, consumers tend to buy the brand they feel they like the most. Godad says that Campa can build a similar recall as it announced plans to launch an intensive marketing campaign at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 – the cricket tournament with a viewership of over 200 million. This too is a page out of Pepsi’s playbook which has had popular brand ambassadors among cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and more. At one point in time, it even engaged almost all of the Indian cricket squad to the 2003 world cup in South Africa including Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Harbhajan Singh and more in its ads. Reliance Consumer intends to bring similar energy into its marketing. “Reliance’s branding activity during the (IPL) event will thereby amplify Campa’s mass-market awareness in the cricket-loving nation. Moreover, as the official sponsor of the popular ‘Mumbai Indians’ IPL team, Reliance Group can rope in popular cricketers as brand ambassadors. This is a powerful marketing strategy given that endorsements by celebrities or organizations are an essential feature that 29% of Indians actively look for when purchasing products, according to GlobalData’s 2022 survey,” says Godad. In addition to all, Reliance is also not building a ‘new brand’ either, it is bringing back an old brand with nostalgia value that still rings a bell with Gen Xers and millennials — that’ll send at least a few to try a brand they once loved. Campa has to go beyond invitation price to build the brand & distribution network

 The retail segment of Reliance industries saw its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) grow over one and half times to ₹2,727 crore compared to the same period last year. “Retail is our hyper growth business. Our consumer business grew 12%, retail business delivered 15 consecutive quarters of revenue and EBITDA growth and 7 quarters of margin profit,” Agarwal added. The ‘future’ of Reliance Brands Reliance Brands, a subsidiary of the retail unit, increased its equity shareholding in Future101 by 2.5% for a consideration of ₹2 crore, taking its total stake in Future101 to 17.5%. Future 101 is the parent of luxury designer Raghavendra Rathore’s label, which Reliance Industries first bought a stake in 2018. Consumption slowdown? Reliance Retail posts a 62% jump in pre-tax profits

<ul><li>Reliance Industries announced its Q1 earnings today. </li><li><keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword> reported an EBITDA of ₹2,049 crores. </li><li>The retail arm of the company has seen a 69.9% year-on-year growth.</li></ul>Reliance Retail posted robust pre-tax profits today as it grew by around 70%, to ₹2,049 crores in the first quarter of 2019-20 as compared to ₹1,206 crore last year. The revenues from Reliance Retail grew at 47.5% to ₹38,196 crores in the quarter ending June 2019 as compared to ₹25,890 crores in the same quarter last year. “Our EBITDA crosses ₹2,000 crore for the first time (retail business). In our core retail, we have the best margin we have ever seen at 8.9%. We have expanded our footprint. We added over 200 stores in this quarter to now have 10,644 stores across the country. We also achieved the milestone of having 100 million registered loyalty customers, and saw 150 million footfalls in our stores,” said Alok Agarwal, CFO, <keyword id="45442" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries-Limited">Reliance Industries Limited</keyword>. Agarwal said that this growth has come as Reliance is offering more to its consumers, is present in every part of the country, offering better assortments, better after-sales service support. “We are beginning to take the benefits of scale. As we grow bigger and bigger, we are also able to give consumers better deals and discounts, simply because we are getting better at merchandising,” said Agarwal. Reliance Retail has 10,644 stores in over 6,700 cities. It is present across areas like food and grocery, consumer electronics, fashion and lifestyle. In the food and grocery segment, Reliance Retail operates Reliance Fresh, Reliance Smart and Reliance Market stores, while in consumer electronics it has Reliance Digital, Reliance Digital Express Mini stores and Jio stores. In the fashion &amp; lifestyle segment, it has Reliance Trends, Trends Women, Project Eve, Reliance Footprint, Reliance Jewels and AJIO.com. Reliance Retail, which was launched in 2006, has been growing rapidly over the years and has been aggressively acquiring companies as well. Earlier this year, Reliance Retail had acquired the iconic British toy making company Hamley’s and in July completed the 100% acquisition of the company for a <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/mukesh-ambani-reliance-brands-completes-100-acquisition-of-hamleys/story/365664.html">reported</a> amount of ₹620 crore. Meanwhile, there are also reports that Reliance Retail is bringing the iconic American brand <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/fashion-/-cosmetics-/-jewellery/reliance-to-launch-iconic-jewelry-brand-tiffany-co-in-india/articleshow/70254628.cms">Tiffany &amp; co </a>to India, as per an ET report. The brand could be housed in the luxury mall that Ambani is planning to open next year in the Jio World Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai.

Reliance Retail's discounts may get better as the company grows bigger

New Delhi, Dec 26 () Richest Indian Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail, which runs the country's largest chain of neighbourhood supermarket stores and consumer electronics outlets, has been valued at USD 34 billion (Rs 2.4 lakh crore) in a proposed share-swap scheme for shareholders.
 Reliance Retail's shareholders have will get one share of its listed parent, Reliance Industries, in exchange for every four shares, according to the scheme of arrangement posted on Reliance Retail's website.
 The share-swap values Reliance Retail at about Rs 2.4 lakh crore.
 Reliance Retail is an unlisted subsidiary of Reliance Retail Ventures and an indirect subsidiary of oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL).
 RIL's shares ended at Rs 1,515.95 apiece on the BSE, giving the company a market cap of Rs 9.6 lakh crore.
 In August, RIL had said that it may list Reliance Retail on the stock exchanges in the next five years. Reliance Retail clocked net sales of Rs 1.3 lakh crore last year and has built a network of 10,901 stores.
 In the scheme of arrangement, Reliance Retail said it had given employees stock options in 2006 and 2007. "On exercise of the RSUs (restricted stock units) by some of the employees, equity shares have been allotted to them."
 "The company has been receiving requests from the employees holding equity shares for providing them options for exit and liquidity, including by way of a listing of the equity shares," it said. "The company does not have any plan for listing of its equity shares on the stock exchanges" and so the share swap scheme.
 In the proposed scheme, "equity shareholders of the company other than the holding company viz, Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd are being given listed equity shares of Reliance Industries Ltd (the ultimate holding company of the firm) and the corresponding equity share capital held by them in the company is being reduced and cancelled."
 Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd holds 99.95 per cent of Reliance Retail. The remaining 0.05 per cent is with employees.
 "Since the scheme does not contemplate any outflow of funds/assets of the company, the aggregate of 'equity and other equity' of the company pre- and post-implementation of the scheme will remain the same and unaltered," it said.
 The company said pursuant to the December 17 order of the Mumbai-bench of the National Company Law Tribunal, a meeting of the equity shareholders of Reliance Retail Ltd is being convened on January 23 for approving the Scheme of Arrangement.
 Reliance Retail is mainly engaged in the organised retail spanning across various consumption baskets primarily catering to Indian consumers.
 It has been set up to "run, operate business centres, hypermarkets, departmental stores, supermarkets, shopping malls, specialty stores, shopping outlets, convenience stores, wholesale, cash and carry operations, non-store formats, warehouses, distribution centers, collection centers, depots and showrooms".
 The firm has been set up to market "all commercial, industrial, scientific, household, food products, consumer goods, consumer durables and other consumer's necessities of every kind, and all other types of general goods, consumables, materials, accessories, commodities and equipment".
 In the second quarter ending September 30, 2019, Reliance Retail reported a 27 per cent growth in revenues to Rs 41,202 crore with strong growth across formats. Operating profit grew 66.8 per cent to Rs 2,322 crore, driven by margins improvement. It has 24.5 million square feet of retail store area under operation.
 The valuation of Reliance Retail, which is also the top wholesale supplier to small shopkeepers, is double that of Avenue Supermarts Ltd, which runs India's biggest supermarket chain. Tesco is valued at USD 32 billion. ANZ HRS

Ambani's Reliance Retail valued at USD 34 bn in new share-swap scheme

Two <keyword id="10926" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reliance" source="Orion">Reliance</keyword> group firms - Reliance Consumer Products Ltd (RCPL) and Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd (RRVL) - have announced an open offer to acquire a 26 per cent additional stake in <keyword id="8109735" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lotus-chocolate" source="Orion">Lotus Chocolate</keyword>. The firms will together acquire 33.38 lakh shares of <keyword id="71296" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="lotus" source="Orion">Lotus</keyword> Chocolate from the open market at a fixed price of ₹115.50 per share, said a notice by DAM Capital, which is managing the offer. The offer will aggregate to a total consideration of ₹38.56 crore over the full acceptance, said an open offer-detailed public statement shared by the company with stock exchanges on Thursday. The open offer starts on February 21 and closes on March 6, said the public notice. Shares of Lotus Chocolate, which manufactures chocolates, cocoa products and cocoa derivatives, had on Thursday closed at ₹149.35 apiece, which was the highest price in the last three months. RCPL is the FMCG arm and a wholly-owned subsidiary of RRVL. The open offer follows RCPL's announcement last week for the acquisition of 51% stake of the paid-up equity share capital of Lotus from the current promoter and promoter group at a price of ₹113 per share aggregating to ₹74 crore. After that, RCPL made a public announcement to acquire 26% stake in Lotus in accordance with the SEBI Takeover Regulations. RRVL is a subsidiary of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries and is the holding company of all the retail businesses under the <keyword id="6484187" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ril" source="Orion">RIL</keyword> group. Reliance makes open offer to acquire 26% stake in Lotus Chocolate

According to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Reliance Jio added 9.4 million customers in the month of March alone. Jio’s total number of users now stands at 306.7 million in India. Meanwhile, its competitors, who have a larger user base, have seen a decline in numbers. Both Vodafone-Idea and Airtel lost consumers in March 2019 and their tally stands at 394.8 million and 325.1 million respectively. While Bharti Airtel lost 15.1 million consumers, Vodafone-Idea lost 14.5 million consumers in March. The TRAI report also stated that during the month of March, a total of 5.30 million requests came in for Mobile Number Portability – which is used by users to switch network service providers. Reliance Jio since its official launch in 2016, has become the talk of the town with its fast-growing numbers by offering cheap subscription and data plans to its consumers. As Jio, with its deep pockets to withstand losses without hampering infrastructure growth, races to be the top telecom network in India, it also faces competition from the current top network - Vodafone-Idea. Despite a larger slowdown in the economy as well as in people’s consumption, Reliance Retail saw its pre-tax profits grow by 66.8% to ₹2,322 crores as opposed to ₹1,392 crores in the same quarter last year. The revenue from Reliance Retail grew to ₹41,202 crores as opposed to ₹32,436 crores in the same quarter last year. Poised for growth Research firm Bank of America-Merrill Lynch (BofA-ML), in its latest report, predicts that Reliance Retail will be a big driver in taking RIL’s market value to a massive $200 billion in two years. A big chunk of the value created will come from serving the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/mukesh-ambani-owned-reliance-retail-revenue-estimate-from-kirana-stores/articleshow/71643159.cms"> kirana stores. </a> Reliance Retail, which was launched in 2006, has been growing rapidly over the years and has been aggressively acquiring companies as well. Earlier this year, Reliance Retail had acquired the iconic British toy making company Hamley’s and in July completed the 100% acquisition of the company for a <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/mukesh-ambani-reliance-brands-completes-100-acquisition-of-hamleys/story/365664.html">reported</a> amount of ₹620 crore.
