<ul class="summary-list"><li>China's COMAC is rebranding its regional jet to the C909, keeping with the naming style of its newer C919.</li><li>That might not get COMAC more C909 sales, but it markets the plane under a unified family name.</li></ul>Chinese planemaker COMAC on Tuesday rebranded its regional jet to fit a unified naming style among all of its aircraft, playing into its ambition to eventually earn a share in the international market.The up-and-coming manufacturer turned heads last year when it launched its first homegrown airliner, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/comac-c919-chinese-commercial-jet-built-rival-boeing-and-airbus-2022-2">medium-range C919</a>, which is meant to compete with the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.Now, the state-owned COMAC said its smaller <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/old-friend-new-look-chinas-comac-renames-regional-jet-c909-marketing-push-2024-11-12/">ARJ21 will be dubbed the C909</a>, in keeping with the C919's nomenclature.The C909 is older than its bigger cousin, with development starting in 2002 and its first commercial flight taking off in June 2016. Its previous name, the ARJ21, stood for Advanced Regional Jet for the 21st Century.<div type="image" title="A Chinese airline staff stands inside a C909, formerly known as the ARJ21." height="3378" width="5397" msid="115247209" hostid="261" sizebytes="1120168"></div>As a regional plane, it's technically fit for flights up to four or five hours — think trips like New York City to Miami.Still, the Boeing and Airbus duopoly should have little to fear from the Chinese plane. Offering about 70 to 90 seats, the C909 is often compared to the Boeing 717, which was marketed to airlines in the 1990s.<h2 id="cfc0c2c2-79a5-4f1f-98b7-ec49ac166432">How the C909 fits into COMAC's plans</h2>But its rebrand displays COMAC's intention to go international as a whole, David Yu, an assistant professor who teaches finance at New York University Shanghai, told Business Insider."If you look at market norms, really no other player has done this in terms of rebranding their aircraft. Unless it's in an M&amp;A play," said Yu, who also runs the advisory firm Asia Aviation Valuation Advisors.COMAC is expected to soon debut another plane in the C-series, the C929, a larger 290-passenger aircraft. The Chinese firm is also working on an even bigger plane, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-economy/article/3262476/china-begins-work-new-c939-widebody-jet-going-bigger-and-bolder-after-c919s-success">C939</a>, a wide-body jet with 390 seats.Yu said renaming to the C909 allows the Chinese planemaker to market a full range of aircraft variants under one name — just like how Airbus and Boeing sell their planes.Boeing, for example, provides a range of seat capacities from 138 to 204 passengers through the 737 Max 7, 8, 9, and 10.That doesn't change the plane's technical capabilities, but it streamlines the company's offerings into one family."If you think about it from a holistic perspective, they want the smallest aircraft and the biggest aircraft, and every single segment in between to be competitive," Yu said of COMAC.<h2 id="d3276065-bc04-4348-9885-f6c2ecc6c357">A new name doesn't mean more sales for the C909</h2>During its Tuesday announcement at the Zhuhai Air Show, COMAC said the C909 would be lighter, more resistant, and less noisy than the ARJ21.That said, Brendan Sobie, a Singapore-based aviation consultant, said the new name may not help COMAC sell the C909 internationally.For one, the plane's aged tech puts it at a disadvantage, he told BI."Anytime you have a new aircraft, it's about when the plane was initially developed. With this, everything was selected 20 years ago," Sobie said.Just over 100 of the Chinese aircraft have been sold to Chinese airlines and TransNusa Airlines, an Indonesian carrier.More attention has instead been focused on the milestone narrow-body C919, Sobie added.<div type="image" title="The interior of a COMAC C919, seen from the Business Class cabin area." height="5504" width="8256" msid="115247211" hostid="261" sizebytes="2366796"></div>The newer plane's launch comes as both Airbus and Boeing have suffered from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/airbus-boeing-aircraft-delivery-delays-not-improving-iata-head-says-2024-10-16/">delivery delays</a> that have frustrated their airline customers. Over the last year, Boeing has also faced a reckoning over <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-737-safety-mess-just-got-worse-2024-10#:~:text=The%20National%20Transportation%20Safety%20Board,been%20plagued%20by%20safety%20probes.">the safety of its 737s</a> after a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-boeing-737-max-9-door-blowout-company-response-earnings-2024-1">door plug</a> blew out of one of its planes mid-flight."There is some kind of appetite for another player in the market, but COMAC has to overcome a lot of challenges," Sobie said.For example, neither the C919 nor the C909 are certified by American or European aviation authorities, though COMAC has been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/old-friend-new-look-chinas-comac-renames-regional-jet-c909-marketing-push-2024-11-12/">pushing hard for the C919's approval.</a>"You haven't seen a big, flagship, independently managed airline commit yet to these aircraft because they do have to be certified," Sobie said.Where the manufacturer and its C909 could pose a greater threat to Boeing and Airbus is China. Domestic airlines there operate more than 4,300 Boeing planes and 1,700 Airbus aircraft, and China has already approved COMAC's planes for commercial use.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202411/1322907.shtml">Chinese media</a> lauded the C909 rebrand on Tuesday, reporting that local airlines had ordered 70 of the renamed aircraft.Yu said that if COMAC can make the C919 and C909 economically attractive to airlines, it stands a chance of grabbing market share both at home and abroad."Yes, it might be older tech," Yu said. "But I think, ultimately, the question is whether the airline can make money off of it. That's the main thing."An Airbus spokesperson told BI that COMAC's developments would "not stop us from being present in the markets where we have significant customer demand," including China."We have always indicated that we saw upcoming competition from COMAC, and it is now a reality, starting with the Chinese market," he said.Boeing did not respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business by Business Insider.

The US and Europe are likely far from certifying China's homegrown aircraft, though it has found business with Indonesian airline TransNusa.Despite Embraer's higher order count, it <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-embraer-new-e195-e2-airliner-competing-against-airbus-a220-2021-12">has yet to sell its E2 family to US airlines</a> due to pilot union contracts, nor to China despite both planes being certified in the country. Embraer's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://theaircurrent.com/aircraft-development/embraer-saudi-ksa-mbs-pif-new-airplane-funds/">presence at November's airshow</a> suggests it's still vying for a piece of the Chinese market.<h2 id="aaf68902-3cdc-4e35-b83c-b8c156c24bae">Embraer's larger planes can carry more people</h2>Comac <a target="_blank" class="" href="http://english.comac.cc/products/rj/">data</a> shows the C909 seats five abreast and can carry 78 passengers in two classes (or up to 97 in a high-density configuration). Indonesian operator <a target="_blank" href="https://www.transnusa.co.id/product/seat">TransNusa</a> has installed 95 coach seats.By comparison, the E190-E2 and E195-E2 are larger at about 119 feet and 136 feet, respectively.The E190 accommodates 97 people in three classes and up to 114 in a high-density economy cabin. A longer range can give airlines more route flexibility, but one of Comac's biggest disadvantages is power.China's C909 is equipped with two General Electric CF34-10A turbofan engines mounted to the back of the aircraft. Depending on the payload, they can propel the C909 between 1,382 and 2,300 miles — but the decades-old engines are less efficient than modern ones.Embraer's E190-E2 and E195-E2 jetliners use Pratt and Whitney's better-performing PW1900G engines and can <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.embraercommercialaviation.com/commercial-jets/e195-e2-commercial-jet/">reach</a> distances of up to about 3,280 miles and 3,450 <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://embraer.com/global/en/news?slug=1207416-embraer-reveals-upgrades-across-its-commercial-e-jet-range">miles</a>, respectively. <div type="image" title="Embraer E190-E2." height="1667" width="2223" msid="115384338" hostid="261" sizebytes="403698"></div>Data from aviation analytics company Cirium shows the C909 is used primarily on domestic routes within China under 1,000 miles. TransNusa flies the jet on a longer 1,700-mile route between Guangzhou and the Indonesian city of Manado.Airlines use the E2 family to reach further away destinations. Royal Jordanian Airlines, for example, flies both variants some 2,000 miles between Amman and Western Europe. Canada's Porter Airlines has a six-hour E195-E2 flight between Toronto and Los Angeles.<h2 id="83314b67-76ce-4333-b93d-73a6d0e0fec4">The C909 may be cheaper than its Embraer rivals</h2>Comac may have an advantage over Embraer in price.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/old-friend-new-look-chinas-comac-renames-regional-jet-c909-marketing-push-2024-11-12/">Reuters</a> reported that Hainan Airlines, one of the buyers of the C909 at the airshow, said the jet's list price is $38 million. However, the carrier said the bulk order would be discounted, which is a common practice in passenger aircraft sales.In 2018, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/embraer-e190-e2-jet-tour-2018-7">reported list price of the Embraer E190-E2</a> was about $61 million. In 2023, Embraer <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.embraercommercialaviation.com/news/avolon-joins-embraers-e2-program-with-sale-and-leaseback-of-10-e195-e2s-for-porter/">reported</a> Porter Airlines' 10-strong E195-E2 order was worth about $840 million, putting the aircraft at about $84 million per unit before any potential discount.<div type="image" title="Hainan Airlines and Colorful Guizhou Airlines ordered the C909 at November's Zhuhai Airshow." height="4768" width="6992" msid="115384335" hostid="261" sizebytes="326406"></div>Like the C909, the E2 cost is likely lower as airlines negotiate prices. For example, Virgin Australia agreed to buy eight E190-E2 aircraft in August.Cirium estimated the sale at about $300 million after discounts, or about $37.5 million each. That puts the reduced rate E190-E2 at about $37.5 million, meaning the smaller E2 variant is more expensive than the C909 — and the E195-E2 even more so.

Excess <keyword id="6373166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fat" source="Orion">fat</keyword> around the abdomen is related to more chances of experiencing widespread <keyword id="33229" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="chronic-pain" source="Orion">chronic pain</keyword>, especially in <keyword id="624" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="women" source="Orion">women</keyword>, according to a study. In over 32,000 participants from the UK Biobank dataset, researchers found that women having fat surrounding their abdominal organ, called 'visceral adipose tissue', were twice as likely to experience chronic <keyword id="27332" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pain" source="Orion">pain</keyword> at multiple points in their body. About half the participants were women, aged 55 years on average. Chronic pain is a condition in which pain persists beyond the immediate healing period, following an injury or trauma. It can sometimes be widespread, felt in more than one part of the body. The researchers, including those from the <keyword id="21703969" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="university-of-tasmania" source="keywords">University of Tasmania</keyword>, Australia, also found that women having higher levels of 'subcutaneous adipose tissue', or the fat right under the skin that can be pinched, were at a 60% increased chance of having widespread chronic pain. The findings are published in the journal <keyword id="23125738" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="regional-anesthesia" source="keywords">Regional Anesthesia</keyword> and Pain Medicine. While excess fat in <keyword id="6364492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="obesity" source="Orion">obesity</keyword> is known to be linked to pain in the muscles and bones, researchers said that the relationship between excess visceral and subcutaneous and widespread chronic pain has not been studied. Among the men studied, those having higher levels of visceral adipose tissue and subcutaneous adipose tissue were found to be at a 34% and a 39% higher chance of having widespread chronic pain, respectively. The stronger links between fat and chronic pain in women could be a result of how differently fat is distributed compared to men, along with hormonal differences. The researchers advised that addressing abdominal fat could help reduce chronic pain, particularly if it is widespread. For the study, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the abdomen were used for measuring both the types of fat -- visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue. The participants also underwent pain assessments, in which they were asked if they had experienced pain in their neck or shoulder, back, hip, knee or 'all over the body' for more than three months. The scans and evaluations were repeated after two years for a smaller group of 638 participants. Being an observational study, the authors could not establish cause-and-effect links. They also acknowledged the study's limitations, including the comparatively smaller size of the participants' sample undergoing repeat tests, and not measuring the severity of pain. "Abdominal adipose tissue was associated with chronic musculoskeletal pain, suggesting that excessive and ectopic (abnormal) fat depositions may be involved in the pathogenesis of multisite and widespread chronic musculoskeletal pain," the authors wrote.
