<ul><li>Online <keyword id="1460935" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="festive-sales" source="Orion">festive sales</keyword> are expected to clock $9+ billion GMV during the whole festive month, according to homegrown consulting firm RedSeer’s latest <keyword id="12158683" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ecommerce-festive-season" source="Orion">eCommerce Festive Season</keyword> Report. </li><li> Tier 2+ will continue to drive growth as they are 55-60% of the total shopper base this year.</li></ul> This year’s festive sales is expected to grow 30% y-o-y to Gross Merchandise Value of $4.8 billion during the first week of festive season and potentially clock $9+ bn GMV during whole festive month, according to homegrown consulting firm RedSeer’s latest eCommerce Festive Season Report. This is a 23% increase from last year wherein the players clocked a GMV of $7.4 billion. The growth will be mostly driven by the accelerated online adoption which has been witnessed as an effect of Covid. Secondly, Tier 2+ will continue to drive growth as they are 55-60% of the total shopper base this year, similar or higher than 57% in 2020 festive days. On the other hand, as offline retail and mobility is recovering almost uptoPre-Covid levels, this will impact the online festive sale as customers may opt for offline shopping as well. Further, categories have been evolving differently during these months which will see an impact during the festive sale as well. While mobile will continue to dominate driven by new launches, electronics are expected to see the second highest demand driven by the wide range of selection, easy payment options including EMIs and Buy Now Pay Later among other factors. Additionally, Fashion is also expected to see a steady recovery this festive season with greater outdoor mobility of consumers and steady rebound of fashion and office wear. The report finds that the sellers are very bullish on this year’s sales and are looking to recover the losses suffered due to Covid. Nearly 80% of the sellers agree that festive sales will play a key role in recovery from Covid losses while 70% agreed that the bigger online players have been supportive and positive which led up to the sales event. The overall online GMV is expected to touch $49-52 billion which is around 37% growth from last year primarily driven by strong consumer funnel expansion and the high adoption of online shopping post Covid across the categories. “We believe that the 2021 online festive sales will continue to ride on strong tailwinds of greater consumer digital adoption supported by an increasingly positive macro and consumption sentiment post the Covid second wave has passed. At the same time, we see strong bullishness in sellers towards online festive sales as ~80% of them believe that the festive sales will enable them to drive strong sales growth and make up for the losses during Covid period. A Redseer report says that e-retailers hit a gross merchandise value or GMV of $1.8 in the first 3 days of their sales. From Flipkart to Amazon to Snapdeal, every Indian e-commerce player is currently hosting their annual sales. The Big Billion Days, Great Indian Festival sale, Snap-Diwali and others provide multiple offers and deals across products to consumers. Redseer report further says that the e-commerce sector will meet 80-100% of the forecasted target of $3.7 billion GMV from their sales alone. “The first three days have been a strong success for e-tailers despite challenging macro environment, indicating that consumer sentiment on online shopping remains bullish. The mobile segment has led the sales, with 55% GMV coming from smartphones. Amazon said that OnePlus, Samsung and Apple crossed ₹750 crore in sales within 36 hours of the sale. With consumption set to rebound in the next 4 or 5 years, advertising spend is projected to grow at 9-10 per cent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) over the course of next 4 years, with digital advertising growing at 11-12 per cent in the same period, the report mentioned. "As digital natives shape consumption patterns across the nation, brands have a never-before opportunity to address a much-larger and diverse consumer pool through advertising," said <keyword id="19923640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mukesh-kumar" source="keywords">Mukesh Kumar</keyword>, Associate Partner at Redseer. "It will be fascinating to witness cutting-edge creative strategies take shape across platforms especially with the possibilities that programmatic advertising and GenAI can offer for the sector," Kumar added. The growth in advertising spend in FY24 is impacted by the slowdown in consumption over the past 5 or 6 quarters and a dip in private equity/venture capitalist funding. According to the report, most consumer sectors have optimised their ad spending and the e-commerce sector is the only sector to see ad spending increase by 15 per cent in FY24. Despite slowdown in ad spending, advertisers increased their ad spending on platforms like retail media (ecommerce, quick-commerce etc.), and content platforms (OTT audio) owing to high conversion potential and wider reach among Tier-2 audiences, respectively.

Currently the online food and grocery retail holds a miniscule part of online retail with only 0.2% penetration. But it is predicted to grow by 55% to reach 1.2% of the market by 2023, said a report by RedSeer and BigBasket. The market size of this segment will also expand to $10.5 billion, the report predicts. The customers’ trust on online shopping along with the growing presence of e-grocery players will drive this growth in the sector, added the report. “The online grocery segment has been one of the fastest-growing e-commerce verticals in India and will continue to flourish in both metro and non-metro cities in the years to come,” said Hari Menon, Co-Founder and CEO, bigbasket. Online grocery vs E-commerce in India As Indians are used to visiting the kirana store in the next lane, online grocery has been growing slowly since onset in 2010. In the past few years however it picked up speed. As the number of e-commerce users grew it had a slow but steady effect on online grocery purchases. As companies from Reliance to BigBasket put their top dollar in serving daily grocery at your doorsteps, <keyword id="1640900" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-grocery">online grocery</keyword> is going to be the next battleground for growth, expanding to over $18 billion by 2024. The eGrocery market has grown 60% from the calendar year 2020 and is expected to grow 41-49 per cent by the first half of CY21, according to the latest data provided by homegrown consulting firm RedSeer. Another recent report by Bengaluru-based RedSeer and Bigbasket (Brand Intelligence) found that demand for comfort foods like noodles and cookies, immunity boosters such as lemon, and hygiene products like sanitisers picked up after the pandemic while essentials remained strong. Within snacks and branded foods, biscuits and cookies were the largest sub-category and grew the most. "We have observed that traditional brands which pivoted quickly to be digitally ready brands have seen 2x+ jump in sales compared to offline brands," said Anil Kumar, founder and CEO of RedSeer. Now, JioMart is set to take the pole position in online delivery of groceries. "Grocery is the largest retail category. This makes it an important category for retailers and one that is going to drive future growth of online retail sales. JioMart will definitely be a key player in the months to come," said Satish Meena, Senior Forecast Analyst with global market research firm Forrester. Driven by the uptick in online grocery adoption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, "online retail sales will grow at a CAGR of 30 per cent from 2019 to 2024 and reach $359 billion", Meena informed. India is witnessing a surge in demand for online grocery. The latest Reliance takeover of <keyword id="44949" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>'s retail business is a major consolidation of organised grocery retail. In terms of grocery retail, the revenue of Reliance Retail in FY20 was Rs 346 billion and that of Future Retail's annualised revenue for FY20 was Rs 100 billion.
