But achievements at the 2024 Summer Games go beyond the physical feats broadcast around the world.Behind the scenes, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-internet-connection-5g-mobile-technology-2024-7">5G infrastructure</a> is powering live broadcasts worldwide and the moments spectators and athletes capture and post on social media.High-speed fiber-optic networks, 5G cellular towers, and advanced WiFi systems have been deployed at 120 sites across Paris to handle the internet demands of global broadcasters, millions of visitors, and the Games' intricate operations.Events as expansive and popular as the Olympics demand robust and high-capacity networks to broadcast live events to viewers worldwide and support the digital needs of athletes, officials, and spectators.Rolf Werner, the head of mobile networks in Europe at Nokia, said that with careful planning, these types of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-advanced-standalone-6g-qualcomm-huawei-mwc-2024-3">5G connectivity investments</a> can last for years."By investing in 5G infrastructure, cities can create a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-transforms-businesses-better-security-remote-capabilities-2024-5">robust digital foundation</a> that benefits local communities long after the event has concluded," Werner told Business Insider. That includes strengthening local businesses' internet connectivity, he said.Sandeep Raithatha, the head of strategy, innovation, and 5G IoT products at Virgin Media O2, said private 5G networks that were initially deployed in Olympic venues for broadcast-service use could be repurposed for live events."Once installed, these networks can continue to be utilized for future events as well, ensuring a lasting benefit beyond the initial investment," Raithatha told BI.That's been the case for Olympic host cities like London and Tokyo, where 5G installations continue to power connectivity for residents and visitors.<h2 id="6014d88e-fe10-42a7-a8e7-2e9ad0a2a87e">London 2012: Stratford Halo</h2>Virgin Media O2 upgraded London's connectivity infrastructure when the city hosted the Games in 2012."This included installing additional masts around major airports to ensure tourists could get online immediately and deploying small cells around the venues so that fans could consistently connect in densely populated areas, whether to send selfies, stream videos, or share their location for safety reasons," Raithatha said.One key build was the Stratford Halo, which acted as the TV broadcasting tower for the Games. After the event, it became a hub for YouTubers and other content creators because of its gigabit-speed internet connectivity. It was considered revolutionary because the average internet speed in the UK at the time was slower.The planning efforts allowed the Stratford Halo to be repurposed into a residential building two years after the closing ceremony.In the lead-up to the Games, connectivity infrastructure was embedded in the London Underground light-rail network and the Westfield shopping center in Stratford. Communities continue to rely on this technology for internet access.<h2 id="0f74ba14-8f70-4b55-aea6-131d7970ae5f">Tokyo 2020: Tokyo Data Highway</h2>Japan has a reputation as a technology innovator. But its capital, Tokyo, which in 2021 hosted the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics, had a meager showing of 5G infrastructure.5G technology wasn't adopted at a consumer level until 2019, and Japan's 5G-infrastructure rollout was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN22R0XP/">delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic</a>. In 2020, just 10 5G towers were installed.But 5G technology became more common by 2021, two years after Tokyo launched its 5G-infrastructure project, the Tokyo Data Highway. Buoyed by the Olympics, the city added dozens of 5G towers to its connectivity system, expanding to 149 installations in 2021.The goal is to have 5G available throughout the city by 2030, though it's unclear how far along the project is.<h2 id="39507179-0379-4d14-9e10-fe6309766453">Beijing 2022: Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway</h2>The 108-mile Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway connected the host city of the 2022 Winter Olympics with the rest of China.It linked Beijing to the competition space outside the Chinese capital where events like ski jumping, snowboarding, and freestyle skiing took place. Athletes were able to take the driverless train between the two locations at speeds of up to 217 mph.But the railway's legacy goes beyond the hyperfast transportation it continues to provide; it was also the first high-speed train equipped with 5G coverage.The train route was also lined with 5G signal towers to ensure reliable, high-speed internet. In 2022, the 5G technology was fast enough that train riders could watch the opening ceremony on their personal devices. Now riders can enjoy superfast interest connections while traveling on the railway.

How Olympic host cities have recycled 5G infrastructure to improve locals' internet speeds and connectivity

<ul class="summary-list"><li>US recycling centers lose up to $1 million annually due to valuable materials ending up in landfills.</li><li>AI startups, including EverestLabs, use robots and machine learning to recover more recyclables. </li></ul>It's well known that the US is bad at recycling.Companies don't make enough recyclable containers and packaging, and people are confused about what can go in the blue bin. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recycling-rate-us-extended-producer-responsibility-cans-bottles-plastic-paper-2023-2">patchwork of state and local collection systems</a> doesn't help.Even when aluminum cans, laundry jugs, and soda bottles do make it to recycling centers, some 27% of those potentially valuable materials still end up in landfills, according to a study by EverestLabs, an AI robotics company that's trying to solve the problem. That means US recycling centers could be losing up to $1 million every year on materials that could be sold to manufacturers and made into something new.EverestLabs is among a group of AI startups disrupting the waste sector by using 3D cameras, machine learning, and robots in recycling centers to help recover more materials, boost profits, and ideally reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. If more aluminum, plastic, cardboard, and glass get recycled, fewer virgin materials would need to be extracted from mining and fossil-fuel production."Recycling plants have been using outdated technologies," JD Ambati, the CEO and founder of EverestLabs, told Business Insider. "They're focused on processing volume at a high throughput, which has the unintended consequences of a lot of material getting shoved into the conveyor lines that send the materials to the landfill."As part of its study, EverestLabs spent two years monitoring the waste stream at dozens of recycling centers across the country. Each of the centers processed hundreds of tons of materials a day. The study measured losses of the most valuable recycled commodities, aluminum and certain types of plastic, but didn't cover cardboard or glass.Ambati said aluminum and plastic are in high demand because companies selling packaged food, beverages, and household products are trying to use more recycled content to meet sustainability goals. Some US states, the European Union, and Australia also have regulations requiring a certain percentage of plastic containers to be made with recycled content to help reduce waste piling up in landfills and the environment.About 76% of recyclables in the US are being lost in the trash at home, <a target="_blank" href="https://recyclingpartnership.org/wp-content/uploads/dlm_uploads/2024/01/Recycling-Partnership-State-of-Recycling-Report-1.12.24.pdf">according to The Recycling Partnership</a>, a nonprofit group that conducts research and works with companies and governments to fund new infrastructure and education projects. Only about 3% of recyclables are lost at processing centers, but new technology is needed to sort and process more materials, the group said."A million-dollar loss is substantial for these recycling plants," Ambati said, adding that the waste industry is starting to see the benefits of investing in AI. "They wanted to get comfortable with what this technology can do."EverestLabs' customers are some of the biggest waste haulers and recyclers in North America, including Republic Services, Novelis, and Balcones Resources.Last year, Caglia Environmental, which serves the Fresno and San Joaquin Valley region in California, installed EverestLabs' technology on one of its "last chance" lines to identify aluminum cans mistakenly destined for the landfill. It is expected to divert more than 1 million cans away from landfills and back to recycling plants that sell the material to manufacturers."Every time an aluminum can is thrown in the trash, it's just a horrendous waste to the Earth," Ambati said. "It is infinitely recyclable and can become part of your car door, washing machine, window frames, you name it. That is what people are missing."

Instead, Amazon is using a paper filler made from 100% recycled material that customers can recycle at home as part of a broader effort to eventually eliminate all plastic packaging from North American fulfillment centers. Amazon already met that goal in Europe this year.The switch to recycled paper comes as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-global-plastic-pollution-treaty-under-scrutiny-2024-4">companies and governments are under pressure</a> to phase out single-use plastics that are piling up in landfills and contributing to the climate crisis. The vast majority of plastics are made from oil and gas, can't be recycled, and degrade into tiny particles that leach into the air and environment. "That's been our focus."Linder pointed to an Amazon fulfillment center in Cleveland that last year became the first to eliminate plastic delivery packaging and replace it with paper that's curbside recyclable. The effort involved rebuilding existing machines that were using plastic to package products. Additionally, As well as being more sustainable, the recyclable paper is better at protecting orders from damage, Linder said.He added that Amazon would disclose the impact of these changes on the company's plastic use in a future sustainability report.That report is also set to detail Amazon's broader climate strategy. Elon Musk took a jab at Disney's Bob Iger with an apparent recycled April Fools' joke

<ul class="summary-list"><li>China on Thursday highlighted an intelligence gaffe involving 200 sensitive military documents.</li><li>It said two military personnel who were supposed to destroy the documents sold them for under $4.</li></ul>China's State Security Ministry said on Thursday that a retiree had somehow secured four volumes of confidential military documents at a recycling store for just 85 cents.The ministry described the incident in a <a target="_blank" href="https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/QD8MOVukB7gHlQ3p2qnZaQ">social media post </a>encouraging the public to be vigilant on national security matters, and praised the retiree for reporting the documents to authorities.He was identified as "Grandpa Zhang." Chinese authorities and media typically do not publish the full names of people who don't have a high profile.According to the post, Zhang is a former employee of a state-owned enterprise and collects military newspapers and magazines as a hobby.He was walking in his neighborhood when he passed a scrap store selling two bags filled with books that seemed related to the military, per authorities.Excited with his find, he paid about 6 Chinese yuan, or $0.85, for one bag of four volumes and brought them home, according to the ministry.At home, Zhang studied the books, realized they were marked as "confidential" and "secret," and reported them to a public security hotline, authorities added.The State Security Ministry said agents rushed to Zhang's home and seized the documents. The ministry did not say where Zhang lives.Upon investigating the scrap store, the state security ministry discovered that Zhang's purchase had been part of eight volumes of 200 secret documents marked for disposal, the post reads.It said two military personnel in a classified unit, who were identified only as Guo and Li, were tasked with shredding the documents but instead sold them to a recycling plant for about $0.06 per pound. The entire tranche of documents weighed about 60 pounds, meaning the duo made a profit of less than $4 for the entire sale, authorities added.The ministry criticized the pair as having a "weak sense of confidentiality" and "greed for convenience's sake" but said that the incident did not create a significant intelligence leak.It said that Guo and Li, as well as anyone else responsible, were dealt with under Chinese law and that the ministry oversaw a revamp of procedures to avoid similar gaffes.The post on Thursday was part of a push by the State Security Ministry to promote a hotline that Chinese people can use to report national security lapses.It's unclear what information the documents mentioned by the ministry contained, so it's difficult to say how a leak of such secrets may have affected the Chinese military.China's State Security Ministry has, in recent months, regularly urged the public to assist in reporting foreign espionage.
