Just four games into her final season with the Trojans, Davenport received the devastating news that the Alabama High School Athletic Association had ruled her ineligible for the remainder of the season.</p><p>According to <span><a href="http://www.espn.com/espnw/sports/article/25669908/rutgers-recruit-maori-davenport-lost-senior-season-gotten-easier">ESPNW's Walter Villa</a>, </span>USA Basketball sent Davenport a $857.20 stipend check to cover her expenses from her Team USA trip to Mexico, which is a routine practice, but failed to check with her high school's federation to determine the legality of the payment. "But it hasn't gotten any easier."</p><p>Thankfully for Davenport, the USA Basketball payment will not impact her eligibility to play at Rutgers next season. Still, watching her team compete from the sidelines has not been easy for one of the country's best players.</p><p>"I never imagined I would be training a whole season without playing a game, but that seems like what's happening," she told <a href="http://www.espn.com/espnw/sports/article/25669908/rutgers-recruit-maori-davenport-lost-senior-season-gotten-easier">ESPNW</a>. "It's been hard, but I still have hope. Maybe something good can come out of this. Maybe the rule gets changed. It may not help me, but I don't want this to happen to any other athlete."</p><p>Davenport certainly isn't alone in fighting for her eligibility and a change to the rules. The scandal involved a Jewish-French artillery officer named Alfred Dreyfus, who was wrongly convicted of treason. </p><p>"Chanel could not have escaped the Catholic Church's propaganda campaign against the Jewish officer Dreyfus," Vaughan writes, adding that later in life, the founder and namesake of the Chanel brand's "fear and hatred for Jews was noxious and notorious."</p><div type="image" title="Coco Chanel, photographed in 1929." height="2015" width="2686" msid="108181302" hostid="261" sizebytes="143934"></div><p>When World War II broke out in 1939, Chanel closed her couture house, which many interpreted was for patriotic reasons. At the time, she was living in the Hotel Ritz, which was seized by the German military in 1940 when the Nazi occupation of Paris began.</p><p>It was while the hotel was used as a Nazi headquarters that Chanel began a relationship with Baron Hans Günther Von Dincklage, a German-British aristocrat working in the German embassy with links to the Nazi military intelligence organization, the Abwehr.</p><h2><strong>The early years of World War II</strong></h2><p> Chanel's love affair with the high-ranking intelligence officer proved beneficial; through Von Dincklage, nicknamed Spatz — German for sparrow — she rubbed shoulders with senior-ranking Nazi officials and was able to secure the release of her nephew and heir, André Palasse, who was a prisoner-of-war in Germany.</p><div type="image" title="Coco Chanel, photographed in 1944 in Paris." height="2581" width="1950" msid="108181304" hostid="261" sizebytes="361152"></div><p>She also leaned on her Nazi associates to help her wrangle back her perfume company which she had sold to her Jewish business partners, Pierre and Paul Wertheimer, in 1924. She petitioned German officials to invoke newly established Nazi legislation that forbade Jewish people from owning property and business enterprises.</p><p>What Chanel didn't realize was that the Wertheimers, anticipating the forthcoming mandates against Jewish people, had temporarily given a Christian French businessman ownership of Parfums Chanel. He returned the business to them after the war ended.</p><p>"Chanel was the consummate opportunist who was going to get what she wanted," Vaughan writes of the designer. "She knew exactly what she was doing. She didn't see any harm in it."</p><p>However, Chanel's entanglement with the Nazis came at a price.</p><h2><strong>Operation Modelhut</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer Winston Churchill enjoys a few days' boar hunting with his son Randolph and Coco Chanel in the forests near Dieppe." height="1033" width="1312" msid="108181305" hostid="261" sizebytes="122576"></div><p>In exchange for the release of her nephew and their attempts to seize control of her company, Chanel was <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="http://www.spiegel.de/einestages/modelegende-chanel-a-947864.html">asked to use her Allied connections</a> to help the Nazi cause in 1943.</p><p>Given the codename "Westminster" (possibly an allusion to her decadelong relationship with the Duke of Westminster), Chanel was tasked with delivering a message to the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, on behalf of Walter Schellenberg, a Nazi spy. According to Vaughan, who relied on contemporary intelligence documents, Schellenberg wanted the SS to "broker a separate peace deal with Britain" without the Führer.</p><p>The operation, named "Modelhut," saw Chanel travel to neutral Madrid accompanied by Vera Bate Lombardi, who was to act as an intermediary and pass over a letter written by Chanel to Churchill. It fell apart when, upon arrival in Madrid, Lombardi — who had been duped into believing that the trip was intended to explore launching Chanel couture in the Spanish capital — discovered the real purpose and denounced Chanel as a Nazi spy.</p><h2><strong>Chanel's later years and complicated legacy</strong></h2><p>Shortly after the liberation of Paris in August 1944, Chanel was arrested and questioned about her relationship with the Nazis.</p><p>Without any evidence to support their suspicions of her covert espionage activities, she was freed within hours, telling her grand-niece when she returned home that Churchill had orchestrated her release.</p><p>In 1949, and then living in Switzerland, she was asked to appear before the war crime trial of a former associate, Baron Louis de Vaufreland, who had claimed that she had been involved in a Nazi operation. She again denied the accusations.</p><p>Per Vaughan, after that, "the details of her collaboration with the Nazis were hidden for years in French, German, Italian, Soviet, and US archives" until he stumbled upon them while researching the life of a man who the Wertheimer family sent to Paris to stop Chanel's attempts to reclaim control of Chanel No.5 under Aryan laws.</p><div type="image" title="Coco Chanel photographed at her home in 1969." height="5610" width="3696" msid="108181306" hostid="261" sizebytes="1437806"></div><p>After Vaughan's book was published in 2011, the Chanel Group released a statement acknowledging the founder's wartime relationship. It pointedly referred to Dincklage not as a Nazi but as "a German aristocrat."</p><p>"Clearly it wasn't the best period to have a love story with a German, even if Baron von Dincklage was English by his mother and she (Chanel) knew him before the War," it continued.</p><p>Chanel, who died in 1971 at 87, continued her relationship with Von Dincklage after the war for several years. In 1954, she reopened after her couture house. While the French press gave her a lukewarm welcome due to the rumors about her wartime associations, the collection was praised worldwide and she cemented her position in the history books of fashion as a name to remember.</p><p><em>The first five episodes of "The New Look" are now streaming on Apple TV+. New Delhi, The rollout of <keyword id="8904563" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-vaccine">Covid-19 vaccine</keyword> by Bharat Biotech for the general public may get delayed as <keyword id="7683594" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-All-India-Institute-of-Medical-Sciences">the All India Institute of Medical Sciences</keyword> (<keyword id="40458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIIMS">AIIMS</keyword>), where its <keyword id="959846" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Phase-III">Phase-III</keyword> human clinical trial is underway, is struggling to find takers of the trial shots, the official heading the project told IANS.<br /><br />While speaking to IANS, Sanjay Rai, the doctor who is the principal investigator (PI) of the <keyword id="9544049" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covaxin-trial">Covaxin trial</keyword>, stated that there are chances that the vaccine may get delayed for public use if the participation of subjects in the trial does not go up.<br /><br />"The rollout would definitely get delayed if the participation in the trial remains low and does not meet the targeted sample size. <br /><br />"With low sample size, the credible data on efficacy will not be achieved," he said.<br /><br />"However, it is completely the prerogative of the regulatory authority to decide whether and when to approve a vaccine," Rai said.<br /><br />The enrollment of candidates for undergoing Phase III human clinical trials of Bharat Biotech's Covid-19 vaccine at AIIMS has reported a mammoth refusal rate.<br /><br />Rai, who also heads the Department of Community Medicine at AIIMS told IANS that in the Phase-III trials, around 80% refusal rate was seen in the participation, whereas it was around 8% for the earlier Phase I and II.<br /><br />In Phase I and II, the clinical site had enrolled more than 800 candidates cumulatively while the target for phase III is around 1,500. <br /><br />Rai stated that the institute is way behind the committed target. "We had committed around 1,500 participants till December end. However, only 300 recruitments have taken place so far. The recruitment of the volunteers is way behind the committed target," he said.<br /><br />Two days ago, results of the Phase I trial of Covaxin were published in a medical journal which showed that the vaccine was found safe and well-tolerated in all dose groups.<br /><br />The interim results were published in pre-print format on MedRxiv and found that the vaccine generated an immune response with one adverse event during the trial, which was found to be unrelated to the vaccine. The phase I trial was done on 375 participants.<br /><br />The Phase III trials of Covaxin are meant to be conducted upon a total of 25,800 participants across 25 different sites in India.<br /><br />Commenting on the results of Phase I trial, Rai said it reflects that the vaccine is "safe and has negligible side-effects". <br /><br />"Covaxin also induced immune response. Covaxin COVID-19 vaccine's Phase III trial doesn't have enough takers, which could delay its roll out to the masses

Sydney, Researchers have revealed that <keyword id="10454883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="armed-conflict-activities">armed conflict activities</keyword> increased in five countries, including <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, during the first wave of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.<br /><br />According to the study, published in the journal World Development, India, <keyword id="6355112" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Iraq">Iraq</keyword>, <keyword id="6354786" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="libya">Libya</keyword>, <keyword id="3001" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> and the <keyword id="3750" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Philippines">Philippines</keyword> all saw an escalation of civil wars because conflict parties exploited either state weakness or a lack of international attention due to the pandemic.<br /><br />"I looked at the countries that had the most palpable records of conflict," said researcher Tobias Ide from the University of Melbourne in Australia.<br /><br />"What I found was that rebel groups try to exploit situations in which governments are busy with containing the pandemic and its economic fallout," Ide added.<br /><br />Increased activities of the Islamic State in Iran are just one example. India named among 'war-torn countries' that saw armed conflicts increase during COVID-19

Is she here tonight?" one of them asked.</p><p>It made Ostroy wonder how many of the 1,000-plus people who were about to watch the hit musical based on his wife's movie actually knew Shelly's story. At that moment, he decided to pause the book he was writing about their life together and make a film instead, so people could really see her.</p><p>Shelly was best known for writing, directing, and starring in the 2007 film "Waitress," which began filming in December 2005. She submitted the film to the Sundance Film Festival the following year, but she was not alive to see it get accepted.</p><p>The filmmaker was <a href="https://pro.imdb.com/title/tt0473308/details">killed on November 1, 2006.</a> In February 2008, Diego Pillco <a href="https://abc7ny.com/archive/5957609/">pled guilty</a> to entering the Greenwich Village apartment Shelly used as an office to rob her, strangling Shelly when she threatened to call the police, and then staging her death as a suicide. Pillco is currently serving 25 years in prison after being sentenced in 2008. </p><div type="image" title="Andy Ostroy" height="1080" width="1440" msid="88278917" hostid="261"></div><p>Released 15 years after Shelly's death, <a href="https://www.hbomax.com/feature/urn:hbo:feature:GYY54mwKzHzytoQEAAAAC?utm_id=sa%7c71700000089318080%7c58700007552655387%7cp68023211596&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA-9uNBhBTEiwAN3IlNB9o7Ejpt41d_x-XqpgxWBRdc7VlN0z_8wPbEP00GKwhe2HOxC-hSBoCFDQQAvD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds">Ostroy's new HBO documentary, called "Adrienne,"</a> sets out to tell Shelly's story so that fans of "Waitress" remember more than just her name.</p><p>Insider spoke to Ostroy about the inspiration behind "Adrienne," the film's powerful portrayal of their daughter's grief, and why it's so important for him to help people understand the legacy Shelly left behind and what she stood for. </p><h2>Shelly was married to Ostroy for over three years before her death </h2><p>As much as "Adrienne" is a movie about Shelly, it's also a movie about Shelly and Ostroy's life together before it was cut short. The documentary covers their whirlwind romance — how the two met on Match.com in late 2001, got engaged in Paris the following summer, and married in December 2002.</p><p>She was an actor and filmmaker who had success in independent films like Hal Hartley's "The Unbelievable Truth" and "Trust." She <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0791248/">wrote, directed, and starred in</a> films like "Sudden Manhattan," about a woman who witnesses two murders on the same street on two different days, and "I'll Take You There," which chronicles what happens when a woman tries to force a man to move on after his marriage fails. </p><p>As Shelly herself recounts in footage featured in "Adrienne," the idea for her most commercially and critically successful film, "Waitress," came to her while she was eight months pregnant with her daughter, Sophie, and "terrified" that becoming a mother would transform her into someone she didn't recognize.</p><div type="image" title="Adrienne Shelly with her daughter Sophie at the beach" height="1440" width="1920" msid="88278918" hostid="261"></div><p>"The actual fear of how your life is going to change, it's not spoken about," Shelly says in the clip. "So, I wanted to write a movie about those fears and give those fears a voice."</p><p>The movie "Waitress" follows Jenna Hunterson (Keri Russell), a small-town waitress at a diner with an almost-magical ability to make pies that help her express her emotions. She's also pregnant with a child by her abusive husband, Earl (Jeremy Sisto), and dreams of saving up enough money to leave him and start a new life. Throughout her pregnancy, she struggles to love her baby while also starting up an affair with her doctor, Jim Pomatter (Nathan Fillion).</p><p>Shelly stars in the film as Dawn, Jenna's quirky co-worker who supports her along with their friend and fellow waitress, Becky (Cheryl Hines). </p><p>"Waitress" was a hit from the time it premiered at Sundance and was well-received by critics and audiences in its wider theatrical release. But it is the musical adaptation that debuted on Broadway in 2016, with <a href="https://waitressthemusical.com/cast-creative/">a book by Jessie Nelson</a> and music and lyrics by singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, that introduced the story to a whole new audience and gave it a life of its own. </p><h2>Ostroy designed his documentary to 'bring Adrienne back to life' </h2><p>Ostroy said that he made "Adrienne" to keep his late wife's spirit alive. </p><p>"The film was always designed to bring Adrienne back to life," he told Insider, aware that some viewers are just being introduced to her but hoping they take away from it an understanding of how special she was. "Perhaps they can grieve her absence in some way the way we do." </p><p>Ostroy structured the film to have three interwoven stories, called "life," "death," and "aftermath." </p><p>To help him build a more complete picture of the filmmaker's entire life and career — they'd only been together for five years before she was murdered — he recruited Shelly's other family members and friends to help "fill in the blanks" about his wife's life. "Her formative years both as a person and as an artist were unknown to me," Ostroy said.</p><div type="image" title="Adrienne Shelly and Andy Ostroy." height="1280" width="1228" msid="88278921" hostid="261"></div><p>In conversations with Ostroy, Shelly's loved ones explained the milestones in her life that impacted her the most, like the death of her father, Sheldon "Shelly" Levine, when she was young, her decision to drop out of school to move to New York and become an actor, and the fears she would express to them about being alone forever before she met Ostroy.</p><p>Another important point of the film was for Ostroy to demonstrate the impact Shelly's films would have on the world. "She literally was #MeToo in many ways before #MeToo existed," he told Insider, pointing to the "very strong feminist voice" in all her films.</p><p>"Almost in a very pioneering way," he added.</p><p>One moment in "Adrienne" demonstrates this aspect of Shelly's legacy in a darkly humorous way. Ostroy tells a story in the film about bringing Shelly's ashes to the theater where "Waitress" was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-reportedly-pays-a-record-25-million-for-sundance-hit-2021-1">playing at Sundance</a> so she could have "her moment" at the premiere.</p><p>"I remember throwing ashes in the air and Harvey Weinstein walked right by and they landed on his shoulders," Ostroy says in the documentary. "And I just started laughing on the inside because literally, it was as if Adrienne was right next to me laughing and thinking that was the funniest thing ever." </p><h2>In addition to shedding light on an underappreciated filmmaker, 'Adrienne' is a stunning portrait of grief</h2><p>Shelly and Ostroy's daughter, Sophie, was only two years old when her mother was killed the day after Halloween in 2006. She's a teenager in "Adrienne," and Ostroy enlisted Sophie to narrate her mother's life by reading journals found at Shelly's childhood home. </p><p>She also voices her younger self in animated drawings featured in the documentary, which Ostroy used to depict his daughter's journey with grief throughout her childhood. The voiceovers are based on real conversations about their grief the two had been privately having for years, all throughout Sophie's life.</p><p>"Ever since Adrienne died, I would sit with Sophie, especially in the earlier years like at bedtime, and we would talk," Ostroy told Insider, calling the conversations "fascinating."</p><p>"I had a small Blackberry, and I just started typing verbatim these conversations because something told me that someday there will be a very meaningful point to having these, even if it was just nothing more than Sophie being able to look at a catalog of conversations and see her own development emotionally as she matured throughout this process," he said. </p><p>In one particularly moving and raw moment in the film, Sophie sits down before bed one night to speak with Ostroy about <a href="https://www.insider.com/stages-of-grief">grieving her mother</a>, talking about how Halloween and Mother's Day are her hardest days.</p><div type="image" title="Andy Ostroy and Adrienne Shelly." height="1275" width="1700" msid="88278923" hostid="261"></div><p>"I'm just jealous all day," Sophie says about Mother's Day, explaining that it's because she realizes she's "never" going to have the relationship with her mother that other daughters get to have with theirs. She admits that the "permanency" of that fact gets harder as she gets older. </p><p>But Shelly, Ostroy says, has left behind a bit of a roadmap for her daughter and her husband based on how she lived her life.</p><p>"I used to say that Adrienne was 5'1", but she was a giant in her industry, and she stood tall when it came to fighting for what she believed in, to executing on her vision, and making sure that her very strong very unique voice is what ended up on screen," said Ostroy, reflecting on her legacy.  </p><p>He said in "Adrienne" that while he's had moments of sitting on the floor crying and smelling her clothes, he was also quick to understand that he had a purpose — to make sure his daughter was okay and to learn the truth about the day of her murder. It'll never work.</p><p>Instead, Clear recommends making something bad happen to you right now as a result of the habit you're trying to quit.</p><p>Clear shares the example of a "habit contract": One man had his wife and trainer sign a document that said he would write down all food that he consumed and weigh himself every day. If he didn't do those two things, he would be required to dress up every day and give his trainer $200.</p><p>Another way to create immediate, negative consequences is to recruit an accountability partner. You probably don't want them to see you as untrustworthy or lazy, Clear writes, so you'll be more inclined to keep your promises.</p><p>Clear's strategies are straightforward enough. But scientists have spent years on this problem and come up with some innovative (if less accessible) potential solutions.</p><p>For example, Hal Hershfield, an associate professor of marketing at the University of California, Los Angeles, Anderson School of Management, showed people digitally altered images of themselves that made them look older; the researchers found that those people were more inclined to <a href="https://hbr.org/2013/06/you-make-better-decisions-if-you-see-your-senior-self">save for retirement</a>.</p><p>Another creative option, cited on <a href="https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/kill-bad-habits-bad-habits-new-year/">MakeUseOf</a>, is to punish a bad habit with a good one. For example, if you find yourself procrastinating doing your work, you might do a few minutes of exercise. That way, you "penalize" yourself and also make it easier to work now that you've gotten your blood flowing.</p><p>As for me, I've I'm thinking about finding an accountability partner who knows whether I hit the gym or the couch every day (and isn't afraid to ream me out for it).</p><p>Clear puts it simply. "The more immediate the pain, the less likely the behavior," he writes. Chief among the worries caused by this seismological shift is the loss of steady, long-term <keyword id="6354910" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="careers">careers</keyword> to automation - and the disappearance of the financial and emotional stability that jobs provide.</p><p>At first glance, the numbers seem to support this fear. Consulting firm Bain <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bain-job-training-apprenticeships-2019-2">estimates millions of jobs will be lost</a> in the US over the next two decades, displacing as much as 25% of the labor force. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ibm-ceo-ginni-rometty-talks-new-collar-jobs-at-davos-2019-1">Ginni Rometty</a>, CEO of tech giant IBM, has been even more direct with her predictions: she's said artificial intelligence will change "100% of jobs in the next five to 10 years."</p><p>But let's take a historical breather. After all, automation wiping out jobs isn't new; what's changed is the method: Deep machine learning is now capable of replacing more than just manual labor. This makes it easy to imagine robot bosses coldly monitoring our work and firing us when we don't meet pre-calculated criteria - HAL 9000 in a suit and tie.</p><p>And yet, the inevitability of AI's increased presence in the workplace doesn't have to cause despair. While Rometty is clear things will change, her company has been proving that when used with managers and employees in mind, machine learning can be a powerful asset in keeping jobs safe.</p><p>Over the past five years, IBM has developed a suite of AI-powered tools that help recruit and map career paths, and even determine salaries. And because the company is so influential, the programs they introduce could find their way to your office soon.</p><p>Major corporations are aware of the fear that often accompanies these changes (not to mention the bad press). Amazon, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/25/18516004/amazon-warehouse-fulfillment-centers-productivity-firing-terminations">which has faced criticism</a> for the way AI is used to terminate underperforming factory employees, announced in July 2019 that they would invest $700 million over the next six years to retrain 100,000 employees whose jobs are at risk of automation.</p><p>The professional services company Accenture has also been an industry leader during these changing times, investing about $1 billion in job training each year over the past four years. So far, it has retrained 300,000 workers. Its AI program (the whimsically named Job Buddy) helps employees whose roles are in danger of being replaced <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/training-employees-on-new-skills-and-technology-what-accenture-learned-2019-1">find new opportunities within the company</a>. "What it does is it tells our people that, look, this percentage of your job is likely to be lost to automation; your skills are adjacent to these skills, so go take this training," Accenture's HR head Ellyn Shook told Business Insider.</p><p>Brands around the world are using AI to enhance their human-resources departments. Research shows that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-to-make-your-resume-is-robot-friendly-2019-4">more than 70% of employers and recruiters</a> use some form of automated résumé parser to process CVs, create summaries of the candidate pool, and even rank candidates. Consumer-goods giant Unilever and mobile provider Vodafone have bet that AI can help eliminate bias <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unilever-artificial-intelligence-hiring-process-2017-6">from the job-application process</a>. HR-services firm Pymetrics develops quizzes that test entry-level job candidates for traits like focus, memory, and propensity for risk. Its algorithm determines whether a candidate is worthy of a closer look from a hiring manager.</p><p>Pymetrics CEO Frida Polli told Business Insider her company is not looking to replace hiring managers at large companies. Rather, they want to free them from having to consider thousands of applications when they could instead be focusing on the top candidates. "People are being elevated to a much more strategic role with the use of it," she said.</p><p>AI in the workplace is still in its early stages, and these experiments are largely confined to companies with access to advanced technology. At IBM, managers use an AI tool called Compensation Advisor that sorts through historical data on thousands of employees and competitors to present a salary range managers can work with, saving time and reducing the scope of judgment required.</p><h3>Providing employees with career-advancement opportunities: Nascent</h3><p>The developed world is at another inflection point, where technology is transforming jobs at a rapid rate across industries for all professionals. IBM's Blue Matching program analyzes data automatically collected about a worker's skill set and weighs that against requirements for other roles within the company. However, a new generation of tools is not only cutting time, it's enabling managers and employees to work more effectively. IBM employees used to have to answer long surveys about their skill sets, then go over them with their boss. Now this data is collected by AI, giving teams more time to focus on the discussions rather than the paperwork.</p><h2>How IBM used AI to transition to a skills-based company</h2><p>In 2014, IBM's leaders realized the tech giant was facing massive disruption. Cloud computing (software distributed online instead of through hardware), blockchain (secure ledger tech), and advancements in AI were redefining their industry. Left unchecked, the drive to automation would leave much of IBM's 350,000 employees without a job.</p><p>Diane Gherson, who'd been named IBM's head of HR the previous year, knew that if the company was going to thrive in this era of change, it had to shift into becoming a "skills-based organization" - that is, employees would now be assessed primarily by their collection of skills, allowing them more flexibility in a rapidly changing environment. And AI, which was partially responsible for this sudden and drastic shift, was going to help them adapt. "It was a huge leap," Gherson told Business Insider.</p><p>Veteran IBM researcher Anshul Gupta was one of the leads in developing AI-powered tools for this purpose. Fundamental to his team's mission was finding solutions to problems that already existed, rather than creating software they found interesting and seeing what stuck. First on his list was figuring out how developers would approach the problem. He told Business Insider that a question he had to ask himself was "How do you think about enhancing their experience through <em>your</em> offerings, but in <em>their</em> workflow?"</p><p>As Gupta and his team set about crafting those tools, another powerful AI was being developed elsewhere at IBM. The company introduced in 2016 a consumer version of Watson, the question-answering AI that famously made its public debut as a "Jeopardy!" contestant. Kelli Jordan, who's overseen IBM's New Collar Job training program and its apprenticeship initiatives, asked developers to find ways to implement Watson into their own workplace.</p><p>"When you start to think about careers and development, especially at a company as large as IBM (and especially in the environment that we're in now where skills are changing so rapidly), it's just hard for an employee to really take it all in and make the right decisions and understand where to look," Jordan told Business Insider.</p><p>The resulting suite of tools that branched out of Gupta's research and the Watson initiative touches nearly every aspect of the working experience, from answering a job candidate's questions to alerting managers when employees should be considered for promotion - or when they're in danger of missing a quota.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5d3869e3100a2467fe53b75b-1152/compadvisorwatson.png" border="0" alt="ibm compensation advisor" data-mce-source="IBM" /><p class="source"><span>IBM</span></p><p class="caption">IBM's Your Learning platform creates a custom collection of skills-based lessons employees can use to advance their job.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>IBM has determined through quarterly assessments of financial and performance impacts that these tools saved the HR department $107 million and "thousands of hours" in 2017. The company has since greenlit further development on the tools.</p><p>Of course, as with any AI, each program has to learn through data accumulation and recognition of patterns. So when the skills assessor first rolled out to an initial batch of employees around the world, it didn't have data enough to work with.</p><p>Peter Usacov, an IBM project manager based in Hungary, volunteered to be an early adopter of the skills assessor program. He told Business Insider that he and his manager found it useless at first, though he decided to keep engaging it to see what happened. "It was like, 'Oh, this is rusty and doesn't really give me anything,'" Usacov said. "Two, three months later, I'm like, 'Oh my God, what happened in between that this became so smart and accurate?'" Usacov said he is now using it for help as he considers new career paths at IBM.</p><p>The company claims that its skills assessor currently has between 85% and 95% accuracy.</p><p>IBM also employs hundreds of AI experts to fine tune the various tools' data sets, to adjust for outliers or decisions stemming from unwanted human biases. Gupta told Business Insider that the compensation advisor is proof of how confident he and his team are in the accuracy of their programs' ability to gather and analyze vast amounts of data, since such a tool is not something you would undertake and use if you were "just playing around" with AI. So far, it's been used for 2,000 pay recommendations. </p><p>The world where AI is capable of matching or exceeding human intelligence is "very far away," Gupta said. Still, the tech is now at a stage where it can be trained to do a particular function, like determining how much to consider paying an employee "very, very well."</p><p>"That's an area where you enhance the employee experience, you deliver good business outcomes, but you also transform the roles of the team itself," he added. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="A Health Blog/flickr" title_caption="The Chinese AI program scored better than some people did on the verbal part of an IQ test." class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/532b1ab4ecad045c5bd7c72a-960/8384110298_b0bc7d6435_o.jpg"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/532b1ab4ecad045c5bd7c72a-800-600/8384110298_b0bc7d6435_o.jpg" border="0" alt="creativity,ideas,sleep" /></a><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/90958025@N03/8384110298/">A Health Blog/flickr</a></span></p><p class="caption">The Chinese AI program scored better than some people did on the verbal part of an IQ test.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> just took us a small step closer to HAL 9000.</p><p>A new artificial intelligence (AI) program designed by Chinese researchers has beat humans on a verbal <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-test-your-iq-2012-12">IQ test</a>.</p><p>Scoring well on the verbal section of the intelligence test has traditionally been a tall order for computers, since words have multiple meanings and complex relationships to one another.</p><p>But in a new study, the program did better than its human counterparts who took the test.</p><p>The findings suggest machines could be one small step closer to approaching the level of human intelligence, the researchers wrote in the study, which was posted earlier this month on the online database <a href="http://arxiv.org/pdf/1505.07909v2.pdf">arXi</a><a href="http://arxiv.org/pdf/1505.07909v2.pdf">v</a>, but has not yet been published in a scientific journal.</p><h2>IQ isn't the end-all, be-all measure of intelligence</h2><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Don't get too excited just yet: IQ isn't the end-all, be-all measure of intelligence, human or otherwise.</span></p><p>For one thing, the test only measures one kind of intelligence (typically, critics point out, at the expense of others, such as creativity or emotional intelligence. Plus, because some test questions can be hacked using some basic tricks, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/iq-tests-are-nothing-more-than-a-myth-2012-12">some AI researchers argue</a> that IQ isn't the best way to measure machine intelligence.</p><p>Intelligence Quotient (IQ) Tests, an idea first proposed by German psychologist William Stern in the early 1900s, usually consist of a standard set of questions designed to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/in-defense-of-the-sat-and-iq-tests-2014-4">measure human intelligence</a> in logic, math and verbal comprehension. The verbal questions usually test a person's understanding of words with multiple meanings, synonyms and antonyms, and analogies (for example, a question might ask for <span style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;">the multiple choice answer that best matches the analogy "sedative : drowness.")</span></p><p>Only a handful of computer programs for solving IQ tests exist, which could make this new achievement a pretty big deal.</p><p>Bin Gao, a computer scientist at Microsoft Research in Beijing, and his colleagues developed the new AI program specifically to tackle the test's verbal questions.</p><p>First, they wrote a program to figure out which type of question was being asked. Next, they found a new way to represent the different meanings of words and how the words were related.</p><p>They used an approach known as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/in-defense-of-the-sat-and-iq-tests-2014-4">deep learning</a>, which involves building up more and more abstract representations of concepts from raw data. (For example, Google uses deep learning in its search and translation features.) The researchers used this method to learn the different representations of words, a technique known as word embedding.</p><p>Finally, the researchers developed a way to solve the test problems.</p><p>The researchers gave a set of IQ test questions to their computer program and to a group of 200 people with different levels of education, recruited using Amazon Mechanical Turk, a crowdsourcing platform.</p><h2>Still, the results are striking</h2><p>The AI's results were striking. Although it scored better than the average person in the study, it didn't fare so well against some participants, such as people 30 and over and people with a master's or doctorate degree.</p><p>Other scientists not involved in the study praised the findings, but cautioned that they were just baby steps for now.</p><p>Robert Sloan, a computer scientist at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said the Chinese AI's performance was a small step forward, but noted that these kinds of multiple choice questions are just one type of IQ test, and may not be comparable to the kinds of open-ended reasoning tests administered to students by trained psychologists.</p><p>Within AI, "the places where so far we've seen very little progress have to do with open dialogue and social understanding," Sloan told Business Insider. For example, if you ask a child what to do if they see an adult lying in the street, you expect them to call for help. "Right now, theres no way you could write a computer program to do that," he said.</p><p>In 2013, Sloan and his colleagues developed an AI that scored the same on an IQ test as a human four-year-old, but the program's performance was extremely varied. If a child varied that much, people would think something was wrong with it, Sloan said at the time.</p><p>Hannaneh Hajishirzi, an electrical engineer and computer scientist at the University of Washington in Seattle who designs computer programs that can solve math word problems, also found the results interesting. The Chinese researchers "got interesting results in terms of comparison with humans on this test of verbal questions," she said, adding that "we're still far away from making a system that can reason like humans."</p><p>So maybe <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-why-ai-is-not-going-to-destroy-humanity-2015-3">AI isn't about to take over</a> the world, as Stephen Hawking and others might have us believe.
