So when he says the current market environment reminds him a lot of the dot-com bubble peak, it doesn't mean he thinks a significant pullback is imminent.It does mean, however, that he sees a big decline somewhere not too far off."This looks and feels like the year 2000 to me," Arnott told Business Insider on November 11. "Are we likely to see a bear market in the next two years for large-cap growth? Yeah."Arnott's comments came as the S&amp;P 500 — a large-cap index dominated by mega-cap growth firms known as the Magnificent Seven — jumped 5% within a week following the election of Donald Trump, closing above 6,000 for the first time. The explosive move was the latest advance in a torrid 66% rally that's lasted more than two years.A robust economy and excitement about artificial intelligence and business-friendly policies from the future Trump administration have propelled the market to all-time highs. But Arnott believes AI optimism, which has driven the lion's share of the rally, is already fully priced in.Those high expectations are visible in the S&amp;P 500's Shiller cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings ratio, Arnott said, which sits at levels that rival the dot-com bubble peak. At 37 times earnings, just below the late-2021 peak of 38, before the market fell by 25%, and the 2000 peak of 43, right in front of a 50% loss.<div type="image" title="s&amp;p 500 cape ratio" height="943" width="1242" msid="115360049" hostid="261" sizebytes="38380"></div>The problem with high expectations is that the results eventually have to live up to them. But a couple of factors threaten the market's bullish narrative, he said.One is that companies like Nvidia will be able to keep their 90% market share as competition rises and the cost of chips eventually comes down."If you posed the question five years ago, the presumption would have been that Intel would be the dominant player," Arnott said. "Well, Intel is teetering perilously close to irrelevance, and Nvidia wasn't on anyone's radar screen five years ago. So disruptors get disrupted."There's also the possibility that the pace of AI adoption is slower than expected, Arnott said. He said internet use in 2005 wasn't all that different from its use in 2000, but that today, things have completely changed. A longer timeline may play out for AI as well, he said.Arnott joins a long list of strategists and money managers who have recently expressed lackluster outlooks about forward return prospects, given the state of stock valuations.Goldman Sachs' Chief US Equity Strategist <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sp500-outlook-next-decade-forecast-david-kostin-goldman-stocks-strategist-2024-11">David Kostin</a> made waves in October when he said the S&amp;P 500 would deliver 3% annualized returns over the next 10 years. "I started by saying I'm gonna get up at 7 today; I'm going to get up at 6, and then it became 4 — and 4 has been a game changer, honestly. Nobody else is up," she continued. "So much of the pressure is I'm always behind, and it was the first time I felt like I'm not behind anymore, and I get my own self-care time in."Rae also noted that she didn't have any other time that was her own, "so now it's become the only part of my day that I could fully control."She uses it to work out, which she considers her own form of active meditation, in her garage gym. She then journals."I'm waking up for me and not for other people."<h2 id="483591e5-5422-48ca-ad70-ab6807366633">The actor says a creative's first hire should be a TV producer</h2>When you look at a successful actor, there are so many people standing behind, beside, and in front of them who make their achievements possible. Rae said when building her team, her first hire was her most essential."When I first met Deniese, that's all she wanted to do was produce. That changed the game for me because that's a person who's just interested in executing and making things happen, pulling the people together to make your ideas happen," she explained, referring to producer Deniese Davis. Davis produced Rae's hit shows, "Awkward Black Girl" and "Insecure." I always have to leave, and sometimes I will…it really is just a logistical thing," she began. "I need three days in a row to be able to start to be creative. I've discovered that's my formula.""The first day will always be spent procrastinating or finding things wrong and reasons I can't start, and I need to allow for that day," Rae added. "The second day, I feel bad for the first day."She said she isn't concerned about her first two days because "in procrastination, you're still thinking; it's still in the back of your mind.""Ideas are still gestating, so by that second day, you're ready, and by the third day, it's like, 'This is all I have, so I have to get it down,'" she continued. "So, I recognize the perfect amount of time is three days, and by that third day, I'm off."

Now, signs have emerged that they're not yet done with generative AI mania.As September rolled into October, some of the most significant investment areas in AI received fresh votes of confidence — be it in the chip space, the large language model arena, and devices. OpenAI no longer has a chief technology officer after Mira Murati quit the firm late last month, becoming the latest top-tier executive to depart.The company has also been battling to reverse its lossmaking operations. In short, a lossmaking startup must justify its $157 billion valuation. A chip firm worth up to $8 billion must persuade investors not to worry about its undiversified revenue streams. Meta will need to convince consumers to switch to another way of interacting with AI entirely. All of these things may come to pass. If so, this will be seen as a juncture where AI goes on to truly revolutionize the industries it touches — and repay the faith of investors. But if history is anything to go by, the high-stakes tech world is rarely plain sailing.

That's because stocks are flashing signs of "invincibility syndrome," with investors falsely believing that nothing can stop further gains, he said in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.calamos.com/blogs/voices/2024-invincibility-syndrome/">note</a> this week."The most significant feature of this investment year is the perception that US equities are virtually invincible. The world's largest ETF issuer recently noted that $77 billion went into ETFs in the week after the election, which had never happened before. That surge coincided with the S&amp;P 500's best week of 2024.Markets were especially euphoric <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-outlook-trump-president-economy-tariffs-trade-war-kelly-2024-11">immediately after election day</a>. An astounding $22.3 billion went into US ETFs last Wednesday, and BlackRock's uber-popular iShares Russell 2000 ETF (<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/ishares-russell-2000-etf-us4642876555">IWM</a>) had its most active day of trading and inflows since 2007 as small caps soared by 5.8%.However, BlackRock's Gargi Chaudhuri doesn't think President-elect Trump deserves all the credit for this astounding market rally. The chief investment and portfolio strategist, Americas noted in a recent interview that US stocks <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-rally-outlook-trump-win-investing-strategy-2025-page-2024-11">had several strong catalysts</a> before Trump's win."Obviously, there have been some pretty sharp movements over the course of the last week," Chaudhuri told Business Insider. "But even as we look back to the quarter before that or since the beginning of this year, I think there have been some very solid fundamentals that have underpinned this movement."Robust growth for the economy and corporate earnings are some of the most salient market drivers, as are lower interest rates and receding inflation, Chaudhuri said. End-of-year rallies are also very common, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-outlook-history-yearend-rally-election-trump-harris-truist-2024-11">especially in strong years for the market</a>, as Truist recently remarked.Another convincing explanation for this recent market momentum is that investors had reduced risk as uncertainty mounted ahead of the election before quickly changing course when they got clarity on the path forward sooner and more decisively than anticipated."Investors bringing down their portfolio risk going into elections was perhaps one of the reasons that we have seen this pretty strong re-risking in markets, especially after we got the election results," Chaudhuri said.<h2 id="e1cf1135-8543-44c9-9cf9-a679564fb91f">Why softer economic readings are a red herring</h2>As the new year approaches, Chaudhuri is rather confident about the US economy, even though a few recent developments seem to have given the glass-half-empty camp some ammunition.GDP growth and job additions have slipped lately, though neither is a major cause for concern for Chaudhuri. The economy <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gdp-gross-domestic-product-third-quarter-economy-2024-10">didn't expand as much as expected in the third quarter</a>, but GDP still rose <a target="_blank" href="https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/gdp-growth">at a healthy clip of 2.8%</a>. And a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/october-jobs-report-unemployment-rate-nonfarm-payroll-growth-federal-reserve-2024-11">weak October jobs figure</a> appears to be largely due to the severe weather events that disrupted thousands of workers.Besides, more modest growth is a sign that the economy isn't overheating, which is welcome news to the Federal Reserve in its quest to ease financial conditions without reviving inflation. Such moderations aren't giving Chaudhuri pause about the trajectory of the US economy."It would be very normal for us to continue to see a further normalization in the labor market, given how strong the economy has already been, how high rates are," Chaudhuri said.The investment chief added: "We haven't really seen that job destruction taking place quite yet. You're still seeing wages rising; you're not seeing layoffs pick up in a meaningful manner."Corporate earnings growth is arguably the most compelling reason to stick with US stocks following what's been another outstanding performance this year. Profits <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-rally-outlook-trump-win-investing-strategy-2025-page-2024-11">jumped about 7% in the third quarter</a>, which is well above the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-invest-q3-earnings-season-recession-risk-investing-strategy-2024-10">mid-single-digit figure that analysts were banking on</a>."One of the things that the equity market has done over and over again is continue to surprise us in terms of earnings growth," Chaudhuri said. "I think companies have continued to find very innovative ways to manage their expenses. They've found a way, especially given the spend on AI, the type of CapEx that's going into finding ways to make companies have more productivity."<h2 id="1bb5d4ad-c973-49dc-9ddc-4fb0e9f732a3">Where to invest in a rosy 2025</h2>Two sectors with abnormally strong earnings prospects are financials and industrials, Chaudhuri said. These economically sensitive groups enjoyed some of the larger post-election pops as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-invest-trump-win-election-stock-market-outlook-strategy-2024-11">Wall Street puts its chips on sectors that should benefit from a hot economy</a>.And although <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheap-stocks-to-buy-strong-growth-market-outlook-garp-bmo-2024-10">smaller stocks have been on a heater</a>, Chaudhuri believes that large, undervalued companies are the better place to be, given their superior earnings setup."For a longer period of time, large cap is where we think the earnings growth is going to continue to be higher and better," Chaudhuri said.While earnings may not be under the microscope like they were when interest rates were at their peak, they're still top of mind for Chaudhuri. Larger stocks often have better earnings than their smaller peers, and the investment chief thinks that the cream will eventually rise to the top."This catch-up trade that's happening in small caps right now has a little bit of legs," Chaudhuri said. "I think that can continue, maybe 'til the end of this month or even the end of next month."Chaudhuri continued: "But for us to believe in sustained rallies in small caps, we would need to see earnings growth, and over 50% of the small-cap index still is not very profitable."

New Delhi: India's fossil fuel emissions are projected to rise by 4.6 per cent in 2024, while China could see a marginal rise of 0.2 per cent, according to new research by a group of international scientists. As the UN climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, discussed raising trillions of dollars to tackle <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword>, the group of scientists known as the "Global Carbon Project" warned that emissions from fossil fuels -- the main driver of warming -- could hit a record 37.4 billion tonnes in 2024, up 0.8 percent from 2023 levels. This comes despite rapid growth in renewable energy and a landmark agreement at COP28 in Dubai last year to move away from fossil fuels. The "<keyword id="23948569" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-carbon-budget-2024" source="keywords">Global Carbon Budget 2024</keyword>" report said total global CO2 emissions are set to go up from 40.6 billion tons in 2023 to 41.6 billion metric tons in 2024, which is on course to become the warmest year on record. "The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly dramatic, yet we still see no sign that burning of fossil fuels has peaked," Professor Pierre Friedlingstein of Exeter's Global Systems Institute, who led the study, said. The 'Global Carbon Project' team said India, the world's most populous country and fastest-growing major economy, may see its fossil fuel emissions rise by 4.6 percent. According to a UN report released last month, India's greenhouse gas emissions surged by 6.1 per cent in 2023, contributing to 8 per cent of the global total. However, the country's historical contribution to global CO2 emissions stands at only 3 per cent. India's per capita emissions remain low at 2.9 tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e), far below the global average of 6.6 tCO2e. India, the world's third-largest greenhouse gas emitter, has pledged to reach net zero emissions (balancing emissions with removals) by 2070 and aims to achieve 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030. China's emissions, which make up 32 per cent of the global total, are likely to increase slightly by 0.2 per cent, though there is a chance they could decline, according to the data released on Wednesday. Emissions from the United States and the European Union, which contribute 13 per cent and 7 per cent of the global total, are both set to decline, with drops of 0.6 per cent for the US and 3.8 per cent for the EU. Emissions from the rest of the world, which together account for 38 per cent of global emissions, could see a rise of 1.1 per cent. The researchers said that in 2024, coal emissions will likely increase by 0.2 per cent, oil by 0.9 per cent, and gas by 2.4 per cent, globally. Coal, oil, and gas contribute 41 per cent, 32 per cent, and 21 per cent of global fossil CO2 emissions, respectively. However, given the uncertainty in projections, it remains possible that coal emissions could decline in 2024, they said. The report also pointed out that emissions from international aviation and shipping, which account for 3 per cent of global emissions and are tracked separately from national or regional totals, are expected to rise by 7.8 per cent in 2024. However, these emissions will still be 3.5 per cent below the 2019 pre-pandemic levels. Globally, emissions from land-use changes, like deforestation, have dropped by 20 per cent over the past decade but are expected to rise in 2024. Permanent CO2 removal through reforestation and new forest planting now offsets about half of the emissions from permanent deforestation, they added. Technology-based CO2 removal accounts for only a tiny fraction -- around one-millionth -- of CO2 emissions from fossil fuels. The report said that emissions from fires in 2024 have been above the average since the beginning of the satellite record in 2003, particularly due to the extreme 2023 wildfire season in Canada (which continued into 2024) and severe drought in Brazil. Land and ocean carbon sinks continued to absorb around half of the total carbon emissions, despite being negatively affected by climate change.

That was despite the market's trailing 12-month price-to-earnings ratio sitting at a cheap 7.5 in 1980 versus a more expensive 24 today.While no two market environments are the same, Smead — the founder of Smead Capital Management — cites the example as a cautionary tale to investors who have eagerly jumped into stocks following the election of Donald Trump to a second term earlier this week.Just like Reagan, Trump touts a regulation-slashing, tax-cutting agenda that should boost the market in theory. But other factors are at play.Smead warns market conditions are setting the market up for dismal returns going forward, and that stocks are in a bubble only made more extreme by the so-called 'Trump bump' this week, which saw the Dow jump 3.5% in a day."You've got an expensive market that just exacerbated itself," Smead told Business Insider."It's a disaster waiting to happen," he continued. "We have put the icing on the financial euphoria cake and lit the candle on top."There is plenty of evidence that the market is historically expensive.For instance, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-crash-why-sp500-decade-weak-returns-goldman-jpmorgan-2024-11">Goldman Sachs said last month</a> that current levels of the Shiller cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings ratio (the dark blue line in the chart below) — rivaling prior bubbles — lead them to believe that the S&amp;P 500 will deliver 3% annualized returns over the next 10 years. They confirmed that these icy patches were the result of frost forming overnight under the right climatic conditions on Mars. The simulations also showed that surface temperatures on these Martian volcanoes are conducive to the existence of frozen water. However, the intense solar exposure at the equator causes the frost to dissipate rapidly each morning, explaining its transient nature. The frost layer itself is extraordinarily thin, just 10 micrometres thick, reflecting Mars' limited atmospheric water vapour. In terms of volume, the frost could cover about 60 Olympic-sized swimming pools if harvested. Though this seems substantial, it's a minuscule quantity compared to Mars’ total surface area. Nonetheless, it represents a potential resource for future astronauts, who could use it for drinking water or converting it into rocket fuel. This discovery not only enhances our understanding of Mars' current water cycle, but also offers clues about its past climate and potential habitability. By refining our knowledge of Martian weather patterns, we can better prepare for future exploration and continue unravelling the mysteries of the Red Planet. New Delhi: <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">Foreign investors</keyword> pulled out a massive Rs 94,000 crore (around USD 11.2 billion) from the Indian <keyword id="19925636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-market" source="keywords">stock market</keyword> in October, making it the worst-ever month in terms of outflows, triggered by the elevated valuation of domestic equities and attractive valuations of <keyword id="20295104" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-stocks" source="keywords">Chinese stocks</keyword>. Before this, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) withdrew Rs 61,973 crore from equities in March 2020. The latest outflow came after a nine-month high investment of Rs 57,724 crore in September 2024. Since June, FPIs have consistently bought equities after withdrawing Rs 34,252 crore in April-May. Overall, FPIs have been net buyers in 2024, except for January, April and May, data with the depositories showed. Looking ahead, the trajectory of global events like geopolitical developments, interest rate movements, progress in the Chinese economy and the outcome of the US Presidential election will play a crucial role in shaping future foreign investment in <keyword id="20014814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-equities" source="keywords">Indian equities</keyword>, Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director, Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India, said. On the domestic front, key indicators like inflation trajectory, corporate earnings, and the impact of festive season demand will also be closely watched by FPIs as they assess opportunities in the Indian market, he added. According to the data, FPIs recorded a net outflow of Rs 94,017 crore in October. The intensity of net outflows could be gauged from the fact that except for one day, FPIs were net sellers throughout the month, bringing their total investment for 2024 down to Rs 6,593 crore. This relentless selling resulted in about an 8 per cent decline in benchmark indices from their peaks. Several factors contributed towards this massive withdrawal of foreign capital from the Indian equity markets in October. The major among them is the elevated valuations of Indian equities. This has triggered a shift in investments towards China, where valuations are currently more attractive. Additionally, a series of stimulus measures, aimed at bolstering Chinese economic growth has made Chinese equities increasingly appealing to global investors, Srivastava said. Despite the massive FPI selling in financials, this sector is resilient since the valuations are fair and every selling is being absorbed by DIIs and individual investors, particularly HNIs, VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services, said. In addition, FPIs pulled out Rs 4,406 crore from the debt general limit and invested Rs 100 crore from the debt Voluntary Retention Route (VRR) during the period under review. So far this year, FPIs invested Rs 1.06 lakh crore in the debt market.
