I spent my days shopping Target's sales and catching up with friends. I watched my favorite TV shows and picked up fast food that I didn't have to share with anyone.Did I feel a tiny bit guilty? Yes. Was it worth it? Definitely yes.I always justified it in my head that it benefited my kids because they got back into their routine and saw their friends when they returned to day care. But really, it was a great way for me to acknowledge that being a mom is exhausting, and I deserved some time of my own.<h2 id="bc15ed2d-0cdd-4b11-a25f-4af9b0052ab2">My kids are older, and I still take time for myself</h2>I now have three teenagers, and my world differs significantly from those toddler-filled days. There are no day care dropoffs, but instead, rides to the thrift store or pickups of boba or frozen yogurt for after-school treats.I still make time for myself away from my kids, and I feel like it makes me a better mom. I take trips with friends where I'll be away from home for a weekend or longer. I agree to work trips where I might miss back-to-school nights or the annual school carnival.These opportunities help me to build my career and maintain my friendships, and they help my kids learn life skills while I am away.I am lucky that my husband is a very involved partner, but he has a job that doesn't always allow him to be home for dinnertime. My teens all have a few recipes they can make on their own, so they don't have to wait for Dad to get home for them to eat. I write up a schedule of who is in charge of the dishes and cleaning the kitchen while I am away (as the oldest complained that her brothers were leaving it all for her). But really, they do so well while I am away.Taking time for myself shows my kids that I am a person outside of being a mother. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, after all.

It's an opportunity to get to know their coaches and teammates while preparing for the season and completing intense training regimens."Going into fall camp, going into my third season, I felt amazing," Morrison said. "It's just fun understanding what's at hand and what type of team we have."A typical day starts with Morrison waking up at 7 a.m. and heading to their training facility called the Guglielmino Athletics Complex, or what players have affectionately nicknamed the "Gug" (pronounced goog). This 96,000-square-foot facility houses the meeting rooms, coaches' offices, locker rooms, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-weight-room-beginner-personal-trainer-tips-2022-10">weight room equipment</a> areas."So, I get to the Gug at around 7:20 a.m., and then get taped, eat breakfast, do all that stuff," he said. "Then we're at a team meeting by 8 a.m. to go over the flow for practice, and we're on the field at 9 a.m."<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-football-playoff-teams-schools-2022-11">The Fighting Irish</a> always start practice with ball disruptions. This means practicing how to take the ball away from the opposing offense."We learn to attack the ball in different ways, how to figure out the ball carrier, and how we can get the ball out," he said. "Then we go into pre-practice and go over some small formations, and we'll warm up and attack in practice."<h2 id="ce80393c-faf1-44c2-9ebf-e9ca5d510481">There's time for a mid-day nap to recharge</h2>After practice, the players have a 45 to 60-minute break. Morrison prefers to spend his downtime taking a "power nap.""This will get me through the day to restart, reload, and then get back going," he said. He also enjoys listening to music because it helps him unwind and reminds him of his family, especially his mom and siblings."Music gets me through life," he said. "I love listening to my music and relaxing.He's a big fan of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lin-manuel-miranda-work-ethic-hamilton-success-2017-12">Hamilton soundtrack</a> and anything by Adele. "I feel like I'm grounded," he said. "You can just pick a tune that really resonates with what you're going through in life and just kind of take it in."<h2 id="98caad2d-337c-4017-833e-eff1455ae7ae">The day continues with more training until 8 p.m.</h2>During team meetings, they recap what happened earlier in the day. "We'll discuss things we can improve on, and how we want to approach the season," he said.As a player and team captain, Morrison never wants to become complacent. He defines complacency as the moment you stop thinking you can improve."No matter win or loss, I want to improve and become the best version of myself and the best teammate I can be," he said. "The moment I become complacent, I hope my cleats are off because I don't want to ever be complacent in this sport."After strategizing with the team, "we'll go lift, and we'll eat and have a walkthrough, and then a little team meeting, and that's the day," he said. "So, I'll end around 8:00 p.m. and get back to the Gug."The time spent in the weight room is integral to training. "Lifting is kind of our foundation, and we pride ourselves on lifts," he said."We have a long season, so we've got to make sure our bodies are up to par with the high demand that football requires," he said. "I think <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/strength-training-better-cardio-burning-fat-2023-10">lifting is what makes us more durable</a>, able to go longer, run longer, and do things at a high level."<h2 id="fbf9a16f-6fe0-430a-b78b-299526c6bd13">Morrison attributes his leadership style to his family and faith</h2>As the youngest of five siblings, who all play competitive sports, Morrison has always felt like he needed to prove himself to his siblings and older friends. "I just pride myself on working hard and not talking a lot," he said.Getting a word in was tough with four siblings, so he learned to "fall in line," and it's similar with football. "I understand that I have a leadership role, but I like to lead by example like how I was raised," he said.Being team captain is a "huge responsibility," he said. "I think Coach Freeman talked about how you have to be unorthodox and challenge things, and I pride myself on standing true to who I am and who I know the team could be."For Morrison, faith means everything. "Last year, I got away from it a little bit," he said. "And I realized I'm nothing without God. I can have all the success and be empty inside."Going forward, his plan is to remain humble and recognize that he's not perfect. "If I just <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/left-goldman-sachs-career-change-pastor-2024-4">honor God</a> in everything I do, the rest will be taken care of," he said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The US Navy wants to use compact lasers to shoot down cheap exploding drones.</li><li>Rechargeable magazines could enable laser weapons to fire more shots before needing to cool.</li></ul>The recent attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea have highlighted a problem: launching a $2 million air defense missile to stop a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/12/19/missile-drone-pentagon-houthi-attacks-iran-00132480">$2,000 drone</a> is a bad trade. Not just financially, but also because warships carry a limited number of missiles.Laser weapons avoid these problems, or at least in theory. As long as there is enough electricity, they can continuously fire. And do so more cheaply than missile launchers or air defense cannon, with costs as low as a dollar per shot or less. However, current high-energy lasers, or HEL, suffer from basic issues that have inhibited their use. Not running out of ammunition is nice, but the price is the need to access vast amounts of electricity. Continuously firing these lasers also generates a lot of heat, which limits firing time and requires bulky cooling systems unsuitable for mounting on small platforms such as drones.The US Navy’s solution? Create lasers that use the equivalent of a magazine for rifles. But rather than containing bullets, these clips would contain a limited amount of battery power. When the laser drains one magazine, just swap it out for a fresh one, while the depleted magazines recharge. “These ‘replacement’ magazines offer an opportunity to forgo ‘near infinite life’ requirements and examine the potential benefits of limited life (tens to hundreds of shots) and potentially expendable, quickly replaceable munition type power and cooling sub-assemblies,” according to the Navy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.navysbir.com/n24_1/N241-066.htm">solicitation</a>. The Navy is aiming for a magazine that can power a small weapon of 20 kilowatts and operate on a 1-micron wavelength. Because it would be air-cooled rather than cooled by water, the laser’s weight would be no more than 20 pounds. That’s not a very powerful system compared to current lasers that range from big <a target="_blank" href="https://news.lockheedmartin.com/2023-10-10-US-Army-Selects-Lockheed-Martin-to-Deliver-300-kW-class-Solid-State-Laser-Weapon-System">300-kilowatt devices</a> to 50-kilowatt weapons mounted on Stryker armored vehicles for short-range air defense.However, it would be perfect for the real prize that the Navy seeks: a laser weapon compact enough to disable small drones. “The demand on ‘infinite duty cycle’ cooling by water chillers deteriorates causing limited operational employment,” the Navy said. “Relieving the design and alignment constraints of separating the systems and examining ‘rechargeable magazines’ for cooling and electrical power in the deployment of such kilowatt-class HEL systems may have benefits on small platforms (ground or airborne, including unmanned weapon platforms) and offers some unique research opportunities.”<div type="image" title="Amphibious transport dock ship USS Portland disabled an unmanned aerial vehicle with a solid state laser during a demonstration in 2020." height="1051" width="1576" msid="107895896" hostid="261" sizebytes="22800"></div>Rechargeable magazines could enable laser weapons to fire more shots before needing to cool down. “Today's HEL weapons operate on a limited duty cycle,” Iain Boyd, director of the Center for National Security Initiatives at the University of Colorado, told Business Insider. “They can be fired for a finite amount of time, then they spend a period of time offline while batteries recharge and the system cools down. If this project is successful, it may pave the way for longer duration HEL weapon applications, particularly on mobile platforms. So, there is a lot of potential.”However, Boyd also sees challenges to the project. “The desired power levels are relatively high, which means there will be a lot of heat released, which then requires additional cooling technologies integrated into the magazine clip. This means the size and weight of the system may become too large.”Lasers small enough to be mounted on aerial drones or unmanned ground vehicles could dramatically affect the battlefield. In particular, they can help mitigate the threat from swarms of drones or anti-ship missiles that can saturate current air defense systems. On the other hand, lasers have yet to prove themselves in combat. The Navy tested a laser weapon aboard a ship in the <a target="_blank" href="https://time.com/3628047/navy-laser-weapon-test-persian-gulf/">Persian Gulf</a> a decade ago, yet lasers still have not replaced air defense missiles and guns.“Sometimes we have a tendency to over promise and under deliver,” the Navy admiral who oversees laser weapons research admitted at a recent <a target="_blank" href="https://breakingdefense.com/2024/01/its-hard-navy-needs-to-be-realistic-about-laser-weapons-admiral-says/">conference</a>. “It’s hard.”Michael Peck is a defense writer whose work has appeared in Forbes, Defense News, Foreign Policy magazine, and other publications. Bank CEO says employees get a 2-week 'recharge period' at the end of December with more relaxed work schedules

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Prosecutors in New Mexico say they'll present new information to a grand jury in the fatal "Rust" shooting.</li><li>They may recharge Alec Baldwin in the shooting, which resulted in the death of a cinematographer. </li></ul>Special prosecutors are seeking to recharge actor Alec Baldwin in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer on the set of a Western movie in 2021, describing Tuesday their preparations to present new information to a grand jury.New Mexico-based prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis said they'll present their case to the grand jury within the next two months, noting "additional facts" have come to light in the shooting on the set of the film "Rust" that killed Halyna Hutchins.Baldwin, a coproducer of the film, was pointing a gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal inside a rustic chapel on a movie-set ranch near Santa Fe when the gun went off on Oct. 21, 2021, killing the cinematographer and wounding director Joel Souza."After extensive investigation over the past several months, additional facts have come to light that we believe show Mr. Baldwin has criminal culpability in the death of Halyna Hutchins and the shooting of Joel Souza," Morrissey and Lewis said in an email to Insider. "We believe the appropriate course of action is to permit a panel of New Mexico citizens to determine from here whether Mr. Baldwin should be held over for criminal trial."They declined to elaborate on the additional information they may present to the grand jury.Baldwin has said he pulled back the hammer — but not the trigger — and the gun fired.Baldwin's attorneys Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro said in a statement to Insider: "It is unfortunate that a terrible tragedy has been turned into this misguided prosecution.
