CHENNAI: A <keyword id="6356109" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="diesel">diesel</keyword> vehicle means higher cost of acquisition but significantly lower fuel bills, right? Well, not quite. Thanks to falling <keyword id="6367091" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Petrol">petrol</keyword> prices and rising diesel fuel costs in recent months, the petrol-diesel gap is now at its slimmest since last June. Which means, the Rs 1-lakh premium (at the very least) that any diesel vehicle commands over its petrol variant now makes the former’s running costs steeper than a petrol car. The math is clear: Petrol cars, including running costs and cost of acquisition, are now cheaper to run than diesel vehicles. 
 First the figures. With the latest cut in petrol prices on Sunday, August 31, and regular increases in diesel prices by 50p, the petrol-diesel gap now spans a slim spectrum, ranging from Rs 9.15 to just over Rs 12. The gap between the two fuels in Delhi is Rs 9.54 per litre. It’s highest in <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword> at Rs 12.33 per litre with Chennai and Mumbai at Rs 8.63 and Rs 9.15 per litre, respectively. 
 
On an average, a new vehicle gives a mileage of 14-15 km per litre. For 50 km a day — the average commute distance in most Indian metros — the vehicle will, therefore, consume nearly 4 litres of petrol. That works out to about 120 litres of petrol a month. 
 
 
 In Delhi, the fuel differential will, therefore, save you around Rs 1,100 a month if you’re driving a diesel vehicle rather than a petrol one. Ditto for Mumbai. A best-selling car in both its petrol and diesel variants, the Swift petrol LXi base model costs Rs 4.42 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi. Its base diesel model LDi costs Rs 5.46 lakh ex-Delhi. 
 
Amortized over a typical loan period of four years, or 48 months, this just over Rs 1,00,000 differential means that the cost of acquiring a diesel vehicle is at least Rs 2,000 more each month. Which means even in the more fuel-expensive cities like Mumbai and Chennai, the monthly price differential between petrol and diesel, at just over Rs 1,000, is half of the premium that buying a diesel vehicle will impose on your pocket for the length of the loan period. 
 
This petrol-diesel math is responsible for the tide turning in favour of petrol vehicles in recent months. Top car marketers say the preference for diesel variants over petrol is down from 70:30 back in 2012 to 50:50 right now. Diesel’s small incremental price hikes mean it is nearly 14% costlier now than a year ago. Meanwhile, a decontrolled petrol price has seen some downward corrections. 
 
However, despite the slimmer differential, diesel still scores over petrol in terms of mileage. Explained Kumar Kandaswami, director, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India: “Diesel vehicles offer 15-20% better mileage which petrol variants will find difficult to match. So per km cost of diesel will always be better. But there is clearly a rebalancing going on and at this rate the market should settle at a 55:45 ratio between diesel and petrol vehicle sales.”

British TikTokers are going viral with videos of people appearing to stockpile at gas stations in response to the national fuel crisis

NEW DELHI: Indian consumers are shifting back to petrol-run passenger vehicles that are set to start outselling diesel variants again after two years, boosted by falling petrol prices and the narrowing price gap between the two fuels. The changing demand trend amid a turnaround in the auto market is making manufacturers rework their production schedule in the run-up to the festival season when sales spike up. Diesel cars have enjoyed a smooth run for more than two years as the fuel costs less than petrol and offers better mileage, making such vehicles a preferred choice for India’s cost-conscious buyers. 
 
That is fast changing with the government phasing out diesel subsidy and petrol, which is deregulated since June 2010, getting cheaper. Diesel is nearly 14% costlier now than a year earlier, while petrol has become a bit cheaper year-over-year. The trend in the automobile market is quite pronounced on some models. 
 When <keyword id="1381889" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda-Cars-India">Honda Cars India</keyword> launched its compact sedan Amaze in 2013, the local unit of the Japanese major found 80% of the buyers going for the diesel version. The Amaze was <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword>’s first diesel offering in India and was launched to meet the then growing demand for cars that run on diesel. 
 
However, last month, just a little over half the buyers for Amaze chose a diesel variant. “Customers are now more educated over their needs and are not going blindly for diesel cars any longer,” said Jnaneshwar Sen, head for marketing and sales. Honda witnessed a similar trend for the new City, with just 50% of buyers preferring diesel in July compared with 70% at the time the mid-size sedan was launched in January this year. 
 
According to executives at car manufacturers that ET spoke to, the festival season that commences next month looks perfect for petrol cars to capture lost ground as the overall market is also on a recovery path with domestic sales recording three straight months of growth. They expect shift of customer preference for conventionally wiser petrol – maintenance cost of petrol cars is usually lower and fuel is more environment friendly – to continue, and are accordingly adjusting their strategies. 
 <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, the country’s largest carmaker, has shelved plans for a new diesel engine plant at Gurgaon and is concentrating on its petrol models as it strives for higher market share. “While diesel car sales have declined 7%, sales of petrol cars have grown by almost 11% in the past few months,” said a senior executive. “Enquiries on and sales of petrol models have jumped in recent months.”

 Companies aren’t just altering production plans, but also offering petrol variants at aggressive price to tap the shift. “Customers are increasingly going towards petrol and keeping the same trend in mind, we aggressively priced the new car with the intention to increase the share in the premium hatchback segment,” said <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword>’s head for marketing and sales, Rakesh Srivastava. The company has invested $600 million in a hybrid engine manufacturing plant capable of producing both petrol and diesel engines on the same line to tackle shifting demand in the Indian market. 
 Overall ownership cost of diesel-fired vehicles has gone up, said Amit Kaushik, principal analyst, autos, at consultancy firm <keyword id="350927" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IHS-Automotive">IHS Automotive</keyword>. Car companies are vying on the government policy that is further likely to dampen demand for diesel cars. 
 
Price gap between the two fuels now stands at just Rs 12 and may further close in coming months because of government strategy of increasing diesel price by 50 paise every month until it aligns with market rates.

Car makers now face backlash over diesel emissions that are 'killing people'

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image">GMGM is getting into the <keyword id="6356109" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="diesel">diesel</keyword> market with a version of the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze.</div></div>Diesel engines, long reputed for being loud and dirty, are making waves in the U.S. Although they accounted for just 3.2% of U.S. auto sales in 2012 (about the same as hybrids), the number of diesels on American roads will double by 2018, according to research firm LMC Automotive.
Automakers like <keyword id="6363321" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Audi">Audi</keyword>, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and even GM are both fueling and benefiting from that growth, and the number of diesel models available to American buyers will triple to 60 by the end of 2017, an LMC analyst says.
Here are 10 reasons you should buy one:
1. Diesel is no longer dirty or loud.
Thanks to new engine technology and the mandatory transition to ultra-low sulfur diesel, today's diesel <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> run quietly, and don’t spew black smoke all over the road.
2. More power. 
There’s a reason trucks run on diesel: The fuel provides more torque, which means more towing power and more power off the line. Audi’s new 3-liter TDI diesel engine (used in the A6 and A7) produces 428 pound-feet of torque. The 3-liter TFSI gasoline engine generates 325 pound-feet.
3. Germans do it.
In 2011, diesel car sales made up for 51.8% of the European market, <a href="http://www1.eere.energy.gov/vehiclesandfuels/facts/2012_fotw716.html" target="_blank">according to the U.S. Department of Energy</a>. In Germany, 41.9% of cars sold that year ran on diesel. If nearly half of German car buyers — who have access to the Autobahn — are willing to give up on gas, Americans should consider following suit.
4. Diesel cars hold their value better than gasoline cars. 
According <a href="https://www.alg.com/the-diesels-are-coming/" target="_blank">to research firm ALG</a>, compact diesels held 63% of their value after 36 months. For gasoline cars, the number was 53%. Hybrids, 55%.
Alec Gutierrez, a senior market analyst at KBB, said that’s partly because there are fewer diesel cars on the market, so used ones command higher prices. They are also “tremendously fuel efficient,” Gutierrez said, a big selling point when gas prices are so high. “Demand is outpacing supply,” he noted.
5. The EPA doesn’t overestimate their efficiency.
Last week, Ford (voluntarily) <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ford-lowers-mpg-claims-for-c-max-hybrid-2013-8" target="_blank">dropped its estimated fuel economy for the C-Max Hybrid</a> to 43 mpg, after EPA testing showed it didn’t meet the claimed 47 mpg mark. In March, some C-Max and Ford Fusion Hybrid owners <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ford-is-being-sued-over-high-fuel-economy-claims-2013-3" target="_blank">filed a class-action lawsuit against the automaker</a>, claiming they had been cheated by false mileage claims.
But when we test drove three of Audi’s new diesel models (the A6, A7, and Q5), we beat the EPA’s estimate each time — and by nearly 10 mpg on the A7.

6. You go to the pump a lot less often.
Diesel may cost more than regular gasoline (about $0.24 more per gallon, <a href="http://fuelgaugereport.aaa.com/?redirectto=http://fuelgaugereport.opisnet.com/index.asp" target="_blank">per AAA’s current figures</a>) but it’s much richer in energy — between 25% and 30% richer. The new BMW 328d (d for diesel) gets better mileage than the gas-powered Smart fortwo coupe. And it produces 180 horsepower, compared to the Smart’s measly 70.
7. If you’re buying a fancy car, diesel fuel isn’t actually more expensive.
The current national average price for premium gasoline is $3.866/gallon. For diesel, it’s $3.876/gallon. So for anyone driving a luxury ride, gas costs just as much, and you need a lot more of it.
8. The price premium over a gasoline car is lower than for a hybrid or electric car.
Per figures from LMC Automotive, cars running on diesel cost $2,500 more than the cars with a gasoline internal combustion engine, on average. For a hybrid, the difference is $4,100. For a fully electric car, it’s $13,000.
All three types of vehicles will save you money on gas, but you'll overpay the least for the diesel.
9. It’s easy to find a place to fill up.
The big problem with electric cars is that the public charging infrastructure is just beginning to be built. But because diesel has been a common fuel for trucks for decades, it’s available at more than 50% of American gas stations.
10. Diesels win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Since 2006, every car to win the famous endurance race — the Audi R10 TDI, Peugeot 908 HDi FAP, Audi R15 TDI plus, Audi R18 TDI, and Audi R18 e-tron quattro — burned diesel on the way to first place.

Electric cars may be better for environment but there are many concerns including the feasibility for customers and the availability of infrastructure to name a few.
