She struggled connecting her identity with the stereotypes associated with autistic teenagers, which she felt didn't fit the profile of a young woman of color.Castañeda Gill ended up hiding her diagnosis from others until she was 21. "It led to a lot of difficulties with my own mental health and self-esteem," she said.But her struggles as a teenager eventually became her calling as an adult. And neurodivergent students that require special education assistance and mental health support are behind the learning curve.Guadalupe Lara, an intensive behavioral instruction aide for students with special needs at Pacific Elementary in Manhattan Beach, California, said helping her students recover from the learning losses during remote learning during the pandemic has been very tough. During the last school year, some students have been unable to recognize words that they were previously able to comprehend in reading lessons, she said."We had to take a step back to find a baseline of where they were, so that we could move forward," she said.Nine-year-old students with registered learning differences <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/special-education-during-the-pandemic-in-charts/2022/10">saw a drop in reading and math scores</a> in 2022 compared to their peers in 2020, Edweek reported, citing long-term trend data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress.Staffing qualified special education teachers has also become a problem for schools. A spring report from the National Center for Education Studies found that 78% of K-12 public school principals found that it was somewhat or very difficult to fill an open position for a special education teacher at their school at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/states-facing-special-education-stem-teacher-shortages/story?id=98775708">ABC News reported</a>."I think schools are really pressed right now, so it's a very good time for opportunities for more platform-based scalable solutions," said Rebecca Kaden, a managing partner at Union Square Ventures.As more districts look for solutions that can help address these problems, startups can be the ones offering the tools. "In everything but official status, school districts are healthcare providers when it comes to these services," said Vijay Ravindran, who founded Floreo, a startup that uses virtual reality to help neurodivergent children learn behavioral and academic skills. "They take on a really important role of skill development for kids with autism."<div type="image" title="Student uses Floreo on a VR headset in a classroom " height="1152" width="1536" msid="102745752" hostid="261" sizebytes="125078"></div>For startup founders in this space, remote learning during the pandemic affected their children in drastic ways, which highlighted the scale of the problem and prompted them to develop solutions.Suchi Deshpande watched her autistic son fall behind in school, so she started working on a way to match "education therapy" providers with students like him for emotional and academic support, which became the prototype for her startup <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/inno/stories/profiles/2022/01/20/startups-to-watch-2022-learnfully-letha-mclaren.html">Learnfully.</a> As she asked around and heard that her friends' children were also experiencing difficulties, she quit her job in enterprise tech and became a full time founder. "During the pandemic, many parents realized when they were home that their kid learns differently," she said.Ravindran came up with the idea for Floreo after seeing how well his autistic son paid attention to different lessons when they were taught through a virtual reality headset. Since its founding in 2016, Floreo has created a catalog of learning modules built around established therapy techniques, but saw interest from parents and schools grow much more quickly in the last two years. This customer growth helped Ravindran close a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.citybiz.co/article/341637/floreo-closes-10-million-series-a-round-to-build-behavioral-therapy-metaverse/">$10 million</a> Series A round at the end of 2022. Meta recently took an interest in Floreo too, and the two launched a partnership program in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.vanderbilt.edu/autismandinnovation/2023/03/28/floreo-launches-immersive-learning-program-to-bring-vr-to-neurodiverse-students/">March</a> to provide discounted Floreo programming for schools across America.Before the pandemic, startup founders in this space had a tough time finding the right VCs to work with since the problems they were trying to solve often didn't fall neatly within edtech or healthtech."There are very few investors who can grasp both the healthcare and edtech side of the issue," said Alex Alvarado, the founder of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-funded-pediatric-mental-health-startups-such-as-elemy-brightline-2022-9#goguardian-3">student mental healthcare</a> startup Daybreak Health, which matches kids with virtual therapy providers through their school systems.Instead, organizations like the startup community <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/autism-can-be-a-growth-market-if-investors-help-it-scale-51662150191">Multiple</a>, a network and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-startup-incubators-and-accelerators-grow-your-business-fast-2020-8">accelerator</a> for pre-seed founders building products for people with autism, helped to fill that void. They backed startups including Social Cipher.In the last two years, though, more generalist investors have begun to invest in startups in this area. For Alvarado, Daybreak's most recent $13 million Series B round of funding was secured after meeting with the team at Union Square Ventures, who was able to understand both dimensions of Daybreak's customer base."I think investors are starting to think about these startups as healthcare businesses that happen to sell to this different channel," meaning school systems, said Diana Heldfond, founder of Parallel Learning, which provides <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pitch-deck-startup-parallel-health-kids-tiger-dyslexia-global-2022-5">virtual special education support staff</a> for schools, and closed a $30 million Series A.Dan Povitsky, the cofounder of Vine Ventures, which led Parallel Learning's seed round, concurred. "If you can show up at schools and say, 'we can untangle this backlog of students needing these types of evaluations and then also provide you with care providers,' that's important," he said.

The pandemic learning loss was worse for kids with special needs. Now, startups are helping students with autism, dyslexia, and ADHD get back on track.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The startup scene surrounding US <keyword id="11972476" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sports-betting" source="Orion">sports betting</keyword> has exploded in recent years.</li><li>But the rocky economy is bringing the once-frothy startup landscape back down to earth.</li></ul>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-sports-betting-startups-us-innovation-database">startup scene surrounding sports betting</a> exploded in recent years as new regulation in the US helped turn online gambling into big business.During 2021, PitchBook tracked in late December 44 venture-capital deals totaling $700 million in US <keyword id="11893855" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sports" source="Orion">sports</keyword> betting, up from 32 deals worth less than $200 million the year before. But the rocky economy is bringing the once-frothy startup landscape back down to earth.Sports-betting <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="startups" source="Orion">startups</keyword> aren't immune to the trends that are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/late-stage-tech-startup-valuations-funding-economic-downturn-2022-2022-6">driving down valuations for late-stage tech startups</a> and leading to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cameo-insiders-reveal-problems-amid-brutal-layoffs-startup-2022-5">layoffs in the creator economy</a>. Venture capitalists, across the board, are getting more cautious as public-market valuations plummet and inflation rises. As such, sports-betting founders and investors are being forced to recalibrate their valuations when raising money."The one thing that is broadly shared is a reality that valuation expectations have to be interrogated," said Chris Grove, cofounder and general partner at Acies Investments.It's also getting harder for startups, particularly those with unproven founders and high burn rates, to raise capital. "It's a very had time to raise money as an inexperienced founder without traction and some semblance of product market fit," said Lloyd Danzig of Sharp Alpha Advisors, which invests in sports-betting startups. "But it is a great time if you are a profitable, cash-flow-producing company with great investors on board that are enthusiastic about your management team."Still, the hottest startups on the scene are seeing outsized demand, as Danzig pointed out.For instance, Jackpot, a UK-based online lottery ticket company, <a href="https://us.jackpot.com/news/jackpot-closes-35million-series-a/">closed this week a $35 million Series A funding round</a> that will help the company expand into the US.Some companies are seeing so much demand that their founders are rethinking the size of their funding rounds and the amount of ownership control they're willing to give up — even as other startups scramble to raise cash for fear that the well will soon dry up.One reason many sports-betting startups aren't yet panicking, like some in other sectors are, is that the public online-gambling companies like DraftKings and Penn National Gaming haven't yet been as impacted by inflation as other businesses, like tech and <keyword id="11894119" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="media" source="Orion">media</keyword> companies, that rely heavily on advertising. And investors' longterm views on the industry remain largely steady, as sports betting continues to expand into more states and reach new audiences."Gambling startups are definitely facing a challenging funding environment," said Grove at Acies Investments, who is also the cofounder and CEO of American Affiliate. Some experts say they agree. </li></ul>Hydrogen's moment: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/energy-experts-dish-on-what-to-expect-in-2021-2020-12#2021-will-be-a-huge-year-for-hydrogen-vcs-say-6">Is right now</a>. The gas is quickly building a reputation as a linchpin in the transition to cleaner energy, and investors are now looking for where to place their bets. Some aren't having much luck. <ul style="text-align: left;"><li>"We look aggressively," Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vinod-khosla-interview-strategy-for-investing-in-climate-tech-2020-12">told me last fall</a>. "We haven't found somebody with breakthrough technology. There's a lot of incremental technologies there, but nobody has a real breakthrough. If you find one, have them call me."</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/energy-experts-dish-on-what-to-expect-in-2021-2020-12#2021-will-be-a-huge-year-for-hydrogen-vcs-say-6">Investors we spoke to</a> say hydrogen used for aviation, heavy-duty vehicles, and industrial processes, such as steelmaking, is most promising. </li></ul><div type="image" title="Chevron gas station" height="1973" width="2630" msid="80712828" hostid="261"></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Big losses for Big Oil</h2>The results are in: Major oil companies, surprising no one, suffered steep financial losses in 2020. One big number: $56 billion<ul style="text-align: left;"><li>That's the combined full-year loss of five of the top companies including <keyword id="6383208" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="exxon">Exxon</keyword>, <keyword id="60772" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chevron">Chevron</keyword>, BP, Shell, and ConocoPhillips. Exxon and Shell topped the list. </li><li>Last year, these firms earned about that same amount, combined. </li></ul>Only up to go? Probably, at least until demand for oil and gas begins a more permanent decline. <ul style="text-align: left;"><li>The price of oil is rising fast as demand notches up. Brent is trading at close to $60 a barrel, erasing year-over-year losses. </li><li>Companies spent 2020 lowering the cost of production, so they're positioned to succeed even if oil prices don't go much higher. </li><li>That's made <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bank-of-america-oil-researcher-energy-stocks-to-buy-top-picks-2021-1">some investors extremely bullish</a> on the traditional energy sector. Bank of America's chief oil researcher told us why he thinks oil and gas will have a good year and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bank-of-america-oil-researcher-energy-stocks-to-buy-top-picks-2021-1">shared 15 of his top picks</a>. </li></ul>But: We have a new president who's pushing clean energy and major companies are setting targets to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. <ul style="text-align: left;"><li>The "decarbonization newsflow," as Goldman Sachs put it in a recent note, is souring investor sentiment in oil and gas companies.</li><li>Among the news that investors see as downside risk is litigation surrounding pipelines and GM's announcement that it will phase out gas-powered cars. </li><li>That's "widened the gap in sentiment between clean energy and traditional energy," Goldman Sachs analysts wrote. (We've now updated <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exclusive-exxon-mobil-organizational-chart-of-top-executives-2021-1">our org chart</a> to include the new division.)What to know: The unit, which Exxon launched after investors pressed the company to move faster to address <keyword id="6361617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change">climate change</keyword>, will initially focus on carbon capture and storage.<ul style="text-align: left;"><li>No surprises here: Exxon has been developing carbon capture projects for a while now.</li><li>The technology is attractive to oil companies in part because it doesn't require that they rewrite their business models and pump less crude from the ground.</li></ul>How investors responded: They were nonplussed. <ul style="text-align: left;"><li>A coalition of investors with over $2.2 trillion in assets <a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/fr/news-release/2021/02/02/2168665/0/en/Coalition-United-for-a-Responsible-Exxon-CURE-Representing-Stakeholders-with-over-2-2-Trillion-in-Assets-Calls-for-New-Leadership-and-Strategy-at-Exxon.html">said</a> Exxon's plan to build out carbon capture capabilities isn't credible, pointing to a carbon-capture project that the <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2020-12-07/exxon-s-xom-carbon-capture-project-stalled-by-covid-19">company delayed</a>. </li><li>Activist investor Engine No. 1 had a similar reaction: It's "poor long-term planning to rely almost exclusively on the idea that carbon capture will become scalable and affordable soon enough to allow for continued oil and gas production growth for decades to come under a Paris-compliant trajectory," the group said. </li><li>But investors aren't jumping ship: The company's stock is up 10% this week and 20% since the start of the year.</li></ul>What's more: Exxon also announced a new board member this week - Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, former CEO of the Malaysian state energy company Petronas. <ul style="text-align: left;"><li>A board shake-up is another demand from activist investors.</li><li>Hedge fund DE Shaw had been in talks with Exxon about making changes to its board, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-01/exxon-is-said-to-be-in-talks-with-d-e-shaw-over-new-directors">Bloomberg reported</a> ahead of the announcement. But we all experience suffering, so why fight it? Better to embrace it, understand it, and learn to walk the path in harmony. Conversely, research indicates that suppressing emotions leads to negative outcomes, like increased rates of anxiety and depression. You need emotionally safe relationships in order to do this. You have to trust that your vulnerable emotions will be handled with care and compassion. When you express your true emotions in the context of safe relationships, it sets in motion a series of positive processes. You connect more deeply to others, which is healing in itself. In addition, you begin to discover the meaning of your suffering in the context of your life story.</li><li>Process the emotions of suffering all the way through. Once you start talking about and feeling the pain of your suffering, stay with the feelings until you get to the end of the emotional arc. This principle comes from what is sometimes called a functional theory of emotion, which suggests that emotions are fundamentally adaptive. Emotions are your automatic evaluation of the events in your life. They provide information that is crucial, and they orient you to what is important for your wellbeing. For example, sadness is adaptive because it helps you grieve a loss. Emotions have a natural arc, or progression, in terms of their intensity and clarity. As you begin to feel the impact of your trial, you may start off ruminating about the situation. It's important that you don't stop at this phase. You need to embrace your emotions more fully to experience their adaptive benefits. As you engage in this process with people you trust and continue the arc of the feeling, the meaning becomes clearer, and there is a sense of relief as you experience the full measure of your own emotional truth.</li><li>Reflect on and reorder your priorities. Trials have a way of making you rethink your priorities in life. This can help you grow. But you must actively reflect on what is truly important to you and then be intentional about changing your routines, habits, and rhythms in ways that align with your revised priorities. That might mean spending more time with your spouse and kids and cherishing each present moment with them. It could mean accepting and even embracing your limitations. Maybe it's leaving the next item on your to-do list undone when the time has come to do something else, and trusting that you will complete the work in order of priority. Or possibly it means finding your identity through relationships rather than accomplishments.</li><li>Use your experiences of suffering to help others. Many people find an immense sense of meaning in helping others who've gone through similar trials. Even if others didn't experience the same challenges as you, using your pain as the fuel for empathy and compassion for others is a way of redeeming your suffering. It helps you create meaning out of it. Many veterans suffering from PTSD find peace in serving fellow veterans. Research shows that volunteerism is one of the most powerful ways we can engage in our own healing. In the same way, this is a core reason grieving parents of fallen soldiers start foundations in their name. And frankly, that's why I serve as a board member for the SEAL Family Foundation as well as mentor young men into and through the SEAL training program. So, get off your ass and go find a cause greater than yourself. Trust me, you'll never regret it.</li></ol><h2>Great, so what now?</h2>Whether the pain and emotional obstacles we experience are chosen or dealt to us, practicing purposeful suffering undoubtedly leads to a better life. It's no different for elite athletes, successful entrepreneurs, or anyone who has chosen to expand their comfort zone in pursuit of something they are passionate about. It's a willingness we all have if we just tap into it. If you just embrace the suck and the good problems that will undoubtedly follow, you'll eventually find greatness - whatever your definition of that is. Challenge yourself to identify both the suffering you have chosen, the suffering you haven't, and the meaning in it all. Consider how you can derive positive benefits from your most arduous and painful times.
