Mumbai, Mar 31 () The Reserve Bank on Tuesday reallocated portfolios of deputy governors, with the Department of Regulation being entrusted to M K Jain. The move was necessitated as N S Vishwanathan demitted office on Tuesday, an RBI communique said. Among Vishwanathan's portfolios, regulation goes to Jain, a career commercial banker-turned-central banker, while inspection will be taken care of by B P Kanungo. Kanungo, a career central banker whose term was extended on Tuesday, will also oversee the coordination function, while risk monitoring will go to Jain. Jain will also take care of communication, while enforcement and secretary departments will be headed by Kanungo, the RBI said. Kanungo, Jain and the third DG Michael Patra will continue to hold their earlier portfolios. AA ABMABM

The candidates should be between 20 and 28 years of age while applying for the opportunity. Selection procedure Candidates will have to appear for two written exams and one skill test — preliminary exam, main exam and language proficiency test. The online written examination will be conducted March 26,27. Note: The dates of the exam may change, an updated notification will be released by the bank in such a case. For the first time, the <keyword id="6354335" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (<keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword>), country’s apex bank, is looking for a deputy governor from the private sector. The RBI has issued an advertisement for the post, which is open for all. Present deputy governor <keyword id="816322" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ss-mundra">SS Mundra</keyword>'s term ends in July this year, after which the post would be vacant. The advertisement has been published in newspapers as well as on the RBI website. To apply, a candidate needs to be less than 60 years of age (can be relaxed in certain cases), with over 15 years of experience in banking and financial market operations. (S)he must also have held the positions of whole-time director or board member. Fixed for three years, the role would offer a pay scale of Rs 2,25,000 per month. Traditionally, RBI has been appointing four deputy governors; two from within the central bank, one economist generally from the government, and the other from the public banking sector. 	“Raghuram Rajan is an employee of the Government of India. We don’t select employees on the basis of popular vote,” he said, reacting to Mr. Rajan’s decision not to take a second term.

	“Let him pretend that he is giving up and going. As long as he is going, it is good,” Swamy further added.

	In a series of letters to Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>, Mr. Swamy had demanded dismissal of Mr. Rajan, arguing that he is not “fully mentally Indian” and had been sending confidential and sensitive financial information around the world.

Mumbai, Jan 15 () Newly appointed RBI Deputy Governor Michael Debabrata Patra will look after the key monetary policy department along with seven other units, the central bank said after reshuffling portfolios of deputy governors.
Besides the governor, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has four deputy governors looking after different departments.
Patra, who was the executive director, took over the post that was lying vacant since June last year when Viral Acharya resigned.
As executive director, he was a member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the RBI, which is invested with the responsibility of monetary policy decision making in India. He will continue to be an ex-officio member of the MPC as deputy governor.
As deputy governor, Patra will look after Monetary Policy Department including Forecasting and Modelling Unit (MPD/MU), the central bank said.
He is the second insider after S S Tarapore to become deputy governor in charge of monetary policy. Mostly, the position in the past has been given to external economists. 
His other portfolios include Financial Markets Operations Department, Financial Markets Regulation Department including Market Intelligence, International Department, Department of Economic and Policy Research, Department of Statistics and Information Management, Corporate Strategy and Budget Department and Financial Stability Unit.
The RBI further said Deputy Governor N S Vishwanathan will look after departments of co-ordination, regulation, communication, enforcement department, inspection department, and risk monitoring. He has also been assigned the job of Secretary's Department.
Ten departments including currency management, information technology, and foreign exchange, had been given to B P Kanungo.
Deputy Governor M K Jain will look after departments of supervision, financial inclusion, human resources, among others. 
Patra, a career central banker since 1985, has worked in various positions in Reserve Bank of India. 
A fellow of the Harvard University where he undertook post-doctoral research in the area of financial stability, Patra has a PhD in Economics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. NKD CS

Newly appointed Dy Guv Patra to look after RBI's monetary policy division

Mumbai, Jun 1 () Former RBI governor R Gandhi on Monday expressed doubt over the efficacy of the government's stimulus package, terming the aim of Rs 7.9 lakh crore uptick in lending to small businesses, agriculture and power discoms as not "feasible". He also said that the RBI needs to re-introduce a one-time restructuring package and mere moratoriums will not suffice in unprecedented times like the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the over Rs 20 lakh crore package announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rs 3 lakh crore was devoted to collateral-free loans to micro, small and medium enterprises, Rs 2 lakh crore were to be given to farmers through kisan credit cards and a liquidity injection of Rs 90,000 crore was assured to the fund starved power distribution companies. Gandhi, who used to handle the banking regulation function at the central bank, said all the banks put together gave out incremental loans of Rs 6 lakh crore in the entire fiscal year 2019-20, when the growth had not plummeted as it is expected to now. Additionally, there are other segments of the economy as well which are in need of credit, Gandhi said, adding that the same number will be over and above the Rs 7.9 lakh crore. "Feasibility of the package ...(it) is unlikely to be really possible because actually the calculations which have been made by the government are based on the total eligibility based on the government's assessment," Gandhi said, speaking at an online webinar hosted by payment system company Electronic Payments and Services. He said it is "unlikely" that all the borrowers from the MSME sector will be availing the entire credit which they are assumed to be taking because of the economic sluggishness and added that many such businesses have folded up as well. "Credit only gives you a little bit of liquidity, whereas the businesses have to look forward that there will be a demand for services, hope for profitability, then only they will come to avail credit," he said. He also said that bankers will be hesitant about extending loans to such companies because of concerns on the borrowers' profitability and also to reduce their own dud assets positions in an environment like this. Over two years after the RBI completely did away with the loan restructuring system, Gandhi sought a reintroduction of the same in the current times. "It (a loan) should not be stamped as an NPA. The forbearance should be given in the current days, mere moratorium is insufficient," he said, adding that the troubles on the economic front, including aspect like an entire quarter lost to lockdowns will make it necessary for the relief to be extended. He, however, said that the RBI must also increase the general provisioning on assets given the volatile times we are in. He also pitched for the government to rely more on cash transfers, rather than spending on infrastructure building, to revive the economy, explaining that the latter is good in normal times while the former helps create consumption demand which is very much needed. Gandhi also said that despite the COVID-19 situation, the government or state-run entities have not released payments for small businesses, and sought the introduction of an automated system to make the payments possible so that the small businesses do not suffer. He also said that the government and the RBI have laid out the enabling regulation and bankers should start taking their credit calls based on their assessments, and not depend on "spoon-feeding" on what to do. Given the change in environment and a larger portion of credit being taken by the services sector, there is a need to reimagine credit delivery where a banker does not depend on collaterals alone while assessing a proposal, he said, stressing on the need for looking at cash flows as well. The career central banker said loan monitoring has become "topsy-turvy" during the last quarter because of the lockdowns and the same should be internalized by the top management. AA MR MR

New Delhi, Mar 23 () Private sector lender IndusInd Bank on Monday said its managing director and chief executive Romesh Sobti has retired, having completed his tenure. Sobti, shall demit the Office of Managing Director &amp; CEO of the Bank, today, March 23, 2020, in line with the tenure approved by the RBI, the bank said in a regulatory filing. Sobti's retirement comes as he has turned 70. The banking regulator has stipulated 70 as the retirement age for managing directors at banks. The board of directors has placed on record a deep appreciation for the wide ranging contributions made by Sobti since taking over the position of managing director and CEO on February 1, 2008, it added. The bank in late February had announced elevation of its consumer banking head Sumant Kathpalia as the new managing director and chief executive with effect from March 2020. Notably, Kathpalia takes charge of the bank at a time when there is a deep mistrust among customers in private sector lenders and rumour mongering keeps simmering in markets, which has caused severe beating to various lenders post YES Bank debacle. However, many private sector lenders have time and again issued statements in a bid to quell market sentiments and restore faith among customers. IndusInd Bank MD & CEO Romesh Sobti retires

New Delhi, Apr 23 () With personal loans outstanding worth over Rs 25 lakh crore, industry body Assocham on Thursday flagged concerns that borrowers might find it difficult to make timely repayments and maintain their credit scores due to the coronavirus outbreak. In a report, Assocham said that having witnessed a robust year-on-year credit growth of 17 per cent at the end of February 2020, personal loans outstanding was about Rs 25.32 lakh crore. There is a grave challenge for borrowers to pay their EMIs on time without default and retain their credit scores, it noted. Basing its analysis on the latest RBI data, Assocham said housing, vehicle loans and credit card segments formed the major chunk of the personal loan outstanding. Though components like consumer durables have shown a big year-on-year growth of 43 per cent, the base was small with outstanding of Rs 6,495 crore. ''As we deep-dived into the data, the areas of concern appear to be housing, credit cards, vehicle loans and education loans. Though the RBI has granted a three-month moratorium on EMIs, deferment comes at the cost of compounding of interest as the tenure gets prolonged, " said Assocham Secretary General Deepak Sood. The industry body said the credit card spenders were, in a way, leading the demand push and were sitting on an outstanding of Rs 1.11 lakh crore as at February-end, logging a significant annualised growth of 33 per cent. Likewise, the housing sub-segment witnessed an annual expansion of 17.1 per cent with outstanding of Rs 13.30 lakh crore . Even before the coronavirus outbreak , vehicle loans were acting as driver for somehow reviving the automobile demand with outstanding loans of Rs 2.21 lakh crore with growth of 10.3 per cent, it said. The outstanding for other personal loans aggregated to Rs 7.17 lakh crore with a growth of over 20 per cent. Assocham said though education loans had shown a negative growth of 3.4 per cent, the aggregate outstandings were large enough at Rs 66,563 crore to pose debt-servicing risks, which would only scale up in the wake of employment situation deteriorating because of the lockdown and the subsequent costs to the economy. ''The outstanding loans to be serviced in different tenures carry different rates of interest and penalty clauses. For instance, the credit card default attracts huge compounding costs. Moreover, there is not much clarity with regard to credit card outstandings in reference to RBI moratorium, " said Sood. It further said the personal loan borrowers always remain concerned about maintaining their CIBIL credit scores. "Most of the personal borrowers are young professionals who have long working career as also personal ambitions ahead of them. We must ensure that their concerns are addressed and their credit scores are not compromised. After all, they are a key component of the India story," said the Assocham Secretary General. KPM ANUANU

It was a one-year management training program. First, the bank taught their interns Accounting I, Accounting II, Corporate Finance I and II. After that, the interns were sent to bank branches for one month.
"I was lucky I learned banking from the ground up. If you can learn a business from the ground up, it's just a really great way to learn." 
Lee worked at the Riverdale Branch in the Bronx-the same on the Yankees baseball team uses. Lee, was was being honored at Harlem RBI's annual "Bid for Kids" gala at Cipriani last night, told us that baseball legends Reggie Jackson and Chris Chambliss would come in to bank when he was there.
During his internship, Lee got to try out a number of roles.
"You're a teller for a day. You go through all the jobs in a branch," Lee said.
Like many interns on Wall Street, Lee said he messed up. 
"I did a lot of mess-ups. I made enough of them. I hardly remember," he said, adding "I think working in a branch and really interacting with the public constantly-We had a lot of complaints and stuff. That's tough. It's hard."
Lee went on to build an incredibly successful career at Chemical Bank before joining JPMorgan.

Insiders are buzzing about Subway sale rumors

Last night, we caught up with Jimmy Lee - JPMorgan Chase Vice Chairman and Co-Chairman of JPM's investment bank - at Harlem RBI's "Bids for Kids" gala. Lee was being honored alongside baseball legend Mariano Rivera. 
We asked Lee, who is known for being the best dealmaker on Wall Street, about the best piece of advice he received.
"I would say [former GE CEO] Jack Welch really helped me a lot in my career in giving me advice," Lee told us. 
He continued: "A piece of advice Jack gave me when I first heard it I didn't know what the advice was- He said, 'Jimmy, you've got to be comfortable in your own skin.' Now when I heard that I'm like 'Well, yeah, of course you do.' But I didn't realize how many different situations you can apply that same piece of advice."
Lee said that whether you go in for a job interview at a bank or have to present a big M&amp;A deal before a board, you have to be yourself.
"I think there's a lot to be said for being yourself," said Lee. "You get up to the plate and you think this guy is going to throw you a fast ball, but he throws you a curve ball. You've got to be ready for the curve ball. I think being comfortable in your own skin is an important trait. It relaxes you. It calms you down and gives you the ability to deal with the unexpected."
