Fintech services platform Razorpay on Thursday announced it has acquired offline payments services provider <keyword id="6519244" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ezetap" source="Orion">Ezetap</keyword>, becoming one of the few companies globally with a significant online and offline presence in payments. According to sources, the deal size is around $150-200 million. This marks Razorpay's sixth and biggest acquisition to date. The <keyword id="14747570" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ezetap-team" source="Orion">Ezetap Team</keyword> of around 300 employees will join Razorpay and work as an independent business unit. "We believe that the businesses of tomorrow will not distinguish between physical and digital channels and will expect a unified payment experience through a single integrated platform," said Harshil Mathur, CEO and Co-founder, Razorpay. Ezetap provides software for financial technologies, including point of sales (POS) solutions, billing, loyalty solutions among others, enablingAbusinesses to accept payments in-store and on-delivery. It currently serves over 500,000 touchpoints, including <keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword> and BigBasket, and works closely with banks like <keyword id="13222" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sbi" source="Orion">SBI</keyword>, <keyword id="45123" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hdfc" source="Orion">HDFC</keyword>, ICICI and Axis, among others, processing over $10 billion in annual transactions on its platform. "We join Razorpay's suite of products to collectively offer businesses the best-in-class omni-channel payments experience and are excited at the limitless possibilities that together both the companies are looking to explore in the omnichannel payment world," said Byas Nambisan, CEO of Ezetap. Prior to this, Razorpay acquired fintech startup IZealiant Technologies, Malaysia-based Curlec, TERA Finlabs, Opfin and Thirdwatch. Indian fintechs to grow 10x and manage assets worth $1 trillion by 2030

Ex-Paytm employees join crypto-focused Transak as it doubles down on its India expansion plans

The credit card will give businesses a no-cost interest for 50 days with a credit line ranging between ₹50,000 to ₹25,00,000. “The move we have made today, helps us expand our horizon in payments and banking and solve new challenges for ambitious businesses who are wanting to disrupt the Indian economy,” said said Harshil Mathur, CEO and Co-founder of Razorpay. The company also claims that it has seen a 500% growth in the last one year. It has over 800,000 clients and hopes to grow this number to 1.4 million by 2020. Some of its marquee clients are Indigo, Bombay Stock Exchange, Thomas Cook, Reliance Industries, SpiceJet, Aditya Birla, Sony and Oyo. It is also expecting its business volume to grow four times by the end of FY21. The startup also announced payment support for freelancers and homepreneurs who struggle to manage their invoices and payments. “We want to make banking trivially simple and accessible for our partner businesses so that while they focus on building new ideas, products and experiences, we take care of their concerns around financial processes,” said Mathur. It also announced the acquisition of a payroll and HR management software company – Opfin. The financial details of the transaction are not disclosed. In June, Razorpay raised $75 million in a series C round of funding from marquee investors like Sequoia India and Ribbit Capital, along with participation from Tiger Global and Y Combinator. In June, the startup also offered digital payment support for 100 currencies enabling Indian businesses to transact and accept payment from global companies. Interestingly, Razorpay was also one of the first startups to announce employee stock options. The latest infusion of capital brings Shiprocket's total funding to $94.3 million. The New Delhi-based company said that it aims to leverage these funds to fuel product development for both existing and new products, to invest in research and development, continue <keyword id="29547" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Market">market</keyword> expansion and accelerate overall growth. However, the billion dollar startup did not share any further details. For LIC, a tryst with ‘using data’ For technology enthusiasts like Rajeev Suri, the managing director at Orios Venture Partners, the bigger benefit lies for LIC in this partnership. Suri takes a leaf out of China’s playbook to cite the example of Alipay and its success. The data that these payment aggregators have, would give LIC the opportunity to direct policies to the right user, making way for a deeper penetration of <keyword id="35450" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance">insurance</keyword> in India. And it is this disruption of data that is driving the story for LIC. “Today, insurance is mainly used as a tax saving alternative. But with data from these startups will help LIC. That is the data driven magic that happened in China that built the most powerful IPO the world has ever seen. And it could happen with LIC too,” said Suri. For any payment gateway operator, an opportunity of a lifetime According to a Goldman Sachs report, the online individual insurance market (life and health) could be worth $1.25bn by FY25, more than tripling from $365mn in FY20. And without a doubt, LIC holds the mammoth share of the market. <div type="image" title="LIC" msid="81304426" hostid="261"></div> For India’s payment startups, this will be a big chance to gain more users and transactions. In 2019-20 alone, LIC processed premiums worth ₹3.79 lakh crore ($51.7 billion). And this, while India continues to remain a poorly insured country with barely 4% market penetration, leaving a wide opportunity for LIC to grow further. India’s digital payment market is projected to grow to be worth $300 billion by FY25, according to a report by Bank of America from January 2021. And at the heart of it are homegrown players like Paytm, Razorpay who will be riding the wave of <keyword id="6358577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments">digital payments</keyword>. Insurance in India is still heavily regulated and for any startup, working with LIC would mean clearing many hurdles at once. “LIC is the grandmaster of insurance in India. For any startup partnering with LIC would mean an easier sell of insurance to consumers, the trust deficit associated with financial products would go away when there is an association with LIC,” Suri told Business Insider. For startups, which are still heavily concentrated in India’s bigger cities, working with LIC will open up direct access to users across Tier 2, 3 cities. Suri believes that the startups would become a ‘trustworthy’ company across India as the recognition value of LIC is high. So who can bid for the LIC tender? Partnering with India’s biggest life insurer, which is also headed for the public markets in what is called as the ‘biggest IPO of the decade’, won’t be an easy task. LIC in its RFP has already issued an eligibility criteria with multiple factors that each amount to a set number of points. The points will be decided on factors such as the total value of digital transactions done by the company in 2019-20, with over ₹50 crore taking the highest points, number of years of experience in the industry, among others. For a company to win the bid, it will need a minimum of 75 points. But that’s not the only hiccup. To bid for LIC means the company would have to first give an Earnest Money Deposit OF ₹10 lakh and the final winner would have to submit a Performance Bank Guarantee (PBG) of ₹10 crore. And all of this makes it a little complicated. "Technically, because of bidding these end up being low revenue opportunities," a source at one of the top payment aggregators told Business Insider on the condition of anonymity. Interestingly, there are many more players entering the payments industry with full force. As per a report by Razorpay, digital payment transactions fell by 30% in India in the last 30 days of lockdown. This is an aberration for fintech companies whose transaction numbers have only been rising since demonetisation in 2016. “In the first two weeks of March before lockdown, the overall online spending increased by about 10% but later saw a dip primarily owing to precautionary measures which people started to take by staying indoors,” said Harshil Mathur, CEO and co-founder, Razorpay. According to the company’s report, transactions in logistics dropped by 96% due to gaps in supply chain, travel sector declined by 87%, real estate by 83%, food and beverage (F&amp;B) by 68%, and grocery by 54%. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[<div class="flourish-embed flourish-chart" data-src="visualisation/2086535" data-url="https://flo.uri.sh/visualisation/2086535/embed"></div>]]></cdata></div> However, interestingly ‘online donations’ went up by a whopping 180%. After the pandemic, several organizations called for donations to help out the needy and it looks like many answered the call. Since the country is closed for everything except essentials, several fintech companies with payment products have seen a drop in transactions. In some cases, by almost half. “During the lockdown, Paytm saw a drop by 47%, Google Pay by 43% and PhonePe by 32%,” says the report. However, Paytm dismissed the same. "We would like to ascertain that Paytm Payments Gateway is India's leading payment processing platform with over 50% market share. For our merchant partners, we are directly processing transactions that can not be captured by any other payment gateway provider with regards to Paytm's UPI growth, contribution, and market share. Therefore, transactions done on Razorpay cannot be put forward as the industry's trend to determine Paytm's contribution to UPI. Their representation on Paytm's growth is misleading," said a Paytm spokesperson. But Mathur believes that this is the time fintechs saw an opportunity to turn things around. “I believe this is a huge opportunity for fintech companies, some of them may have to re-examine their business models after Covid-19, prioritising growth and customer acquisition over profitability. The fintech industry will be forced to evolve, think big and act boldly which will eventually result in innovations in payments and banking solutions to be able to meet new customer demands and behaviour,” he said. Mathur believes that in a post Covid-19 world, there will be a greater collaboration between banks and fintech companies as new digital tools will be integral to any bank’s strategy. “The new macroeconomic narrative will soon transform into the next normal,” he said. With the new investment, Razorpay plans to hire senior employees and take its total number of employees to 700 by 2020 from the current strength of 350. The 5-year old startup founded by IIT alums Harshil Mathur and Shashank Kumar has been growing its business rapidly and claims to have grown by 500% in the last financial year. “Our key mission is that while our partner businesses disrupt the Indian economy with new ideas, products, experiences and new jobs, we want to power their financial systems. Over 350,000 disruptors partnered with us to create the difference that we are here to make. This funding has come in at a time when fintech and banking is evolving beyond payments and lending, and we would like to change the way businesses access banking products,” said Harshil Mathur, CEO and Co-Founder, Razorpay. It is poised for more growth. The company said that its neo-banking platform and lending arm could alone contribute to 40% of its revenue by next year. In early <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/news-ani/razorpay-launches-digital-payment-support-for-100-currencies-119060500789_1.html">June</a>, the startup offered digital payment support for 100 currencies enabling Indian businesses to transact and accept payment from global companies. It has Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation, Airtel, BookMyShow, Zomato, Swiggy as its clients. Interestingly, Razorpay was also one of the first startups to announce Employee Stock Options. The Covid-19 pandemic's third wave has had a minimal impact on production as well as demand, said automobile major <keyword id="44883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="Orion">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>. Notably, the third wave's disruption has been less severe than previous phases of the pandemic. In a conversation with IANS, Maruti Suzuki India's Senior Executive Director, Sales and Marketing, Shashank Srivastava said the company as well as the industry has coped well with the third wave. He pointed out that it took the company 90 days to reach from 0-to-6,000 units production per day during the first wave. "In the second wave, it took us only 18 days to reach this mark. We were able to recover in a short time as we had a good learning experience from the first wave which was implemented in the second wave," Srivastava said. "In the third wave, there has hardly been any disruption with respect to bookings, demand or even the supply chain." Last month, the auto major sold a total of 154,379 units which was lower than the off-take of 160,752 units reported in January 2021, on account of lower production. Furthermore, he cited that an easing in semiconductor supply issue. "You can see next (fiscal) year, the situation becomes much better than what we saw in the second half of this year. However, in terms of production, we will probably not be at 100 per cent production level even in this quarter." In January 2022, the company's total production of passenger as well as commercial vehicles rose to 161,383 units from 160,975 units manufactured during the corresponding month of last year. The global semiconductor shortage has been triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic-induced supply hurdles as well as healthy demand. Accordingly, the phenomenon has been blamed on the exponential rise in demand for personal electronics such as cellphones and laptops during the ongoing pandemic. On a technical basis, semiconductors play a critical part in the production of internal combustion engines. They are an integral part of all kinds of sensors and controls in any vehicle. The shortage has extended waiting periods along with escalated prices. On the cost pressure, he noted that even the higher vehicle prices have not been able to cover the rise in commodity prices. "Despite all these price increases, we still find that the commodity prices have been much larger." "The commodity prices increase in the last 1.5 years have been extremely high. The price hikes which have been undertaken by manufacturers including Maruti Suzuki are not sufficient to cover that and hence the stress on profitability for the auto industry continues."
