LIC is currently inviting bids from payment aggregator companies to enable digital payment of premiums for its over 250 million customers – an opportunity for the likes of <keyword id="2777173" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Razorpay">Razorpay</keyword>, Paytm, PayU to pounce upon and gain LIC’s millions of users overnight. <div type="image" title="LIC" msid="81304415" hostid="261"></div> Business Insider has learnt that, on February 5, 2021, LIC floated the “request for proposal (RFP)” for a contract which will be valid for five years. The RFP, seen by Business Insider, states that “LIC wishes to avail a comprehensive, fully automated end to end solution for all types of collections of LIC, not limited to just premiums, by integrating LIC’s website with an integrated Internet Payment Aggregator”. <div type="Youtube" id="Vvc-BuPvE3k" title="India&amp;#39;s largest insurer LIC is inviting bids from payment aggregators⁠" thumbUrl="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Vvc-BuPvE3k/mqdefault.jpg"></div> LIC had earlier floated a similar bid in 2017, but the bid had not seen the light of the day. But now, there are big things lined up for LIC. The 65-year old insurer is headed for a market debut too this year, as announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget 2020 speech. One of India’s payment gateway operators Razorpay has confirmed to Business Insider that it has been invited to bid for LIC, and will be submitting its proposal in March. However, the billion dollar startup did not share any further details. For LIC, a tryst with ‘using data’ For technology enthusiasts like Rajeev Suri, the managing director at Orios Venture Partners, the bigger benefit lies for LIC in this partnership. Suri takes a leaf out of China’s playbook to cite the example of Alipay and its success. Alipay, the payments app from Jack Ma’s Ant Financial, used data from the payments vertical to<a href="https://hbr.org/2020/09/why-hasnt-apple-pay-replicated-alipays-success#:~:text=Alipay%2C%20which%20was%20spun%20off,behind%20it%20went%20beyond%20payments."> sell more products to users</a>, which eventually led to Ant Financial becoming a mammoth financial company with a valuation of over $300 billion. The data that these payment aggregators have, would give LIC the opportunity to direct policies to the right user, making way for a deeper penetration of <keyword id="35450" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance">insurance</keyword> in India. And it is this disruption of data that is driving the story for LIC. “Today, insurance is mainly used as a tax saving alternative. But with data from these startups will help LIC. That is the data driven magic that happened in China that built the most powerful IPO the world has ever seen. And it could happen with LIC too,” said Suri. For any payment gateway operator, an opportunity of a lifetime According to a Goldman Sachs report, the online individual insurance market (life and health) could be worth $1.25bn by FY25, more than tripling from $365mn in FY20. And without a doubt, LIC holds the mammoth share of the market. <div type="image" title="LIC" msid="81304426" hostid="261"></div> For India’s payment startups, this will be a big chance to gain more users and transactions. In 2019-20 alone, LIC processed premiums worth ₹3.79 lakh crore ($51.7 billion). And this, while India continues to remain a poorly insured country with barely 4% market penetration, leaving a wide opportunity for LIC to grow further. India’s digital payment market is projected to grow to be worth $300 billion by FY25, according to a report by Bank of America from January 2021. And at the heart of it are homegrown players like Paytm, Razorpay who will be riding the wave of <keyword id="6358577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments">digital payments</keyword>. Insurance in India is still heavily regulated and for any startup, working with LIC would mean clearing many hurdles at once. “LIC is the grandmaster of insurance in India. For any startup partnering with LIC would mean an easier sell of insurance to consumers, the trust deficit associated with financial products would go away when there is an association with LIC,” Suri told Business Insider. For startups, which are still heavily concentrated in India’s bigger cities, working with LIC will open up direct access to users across Tier 2, 3 cities. Suri believes that the startups would become a ‘trustworthy’ company across India as the recognition value of LIC is high. So who can bid for the LIC tender? Partnering with India’s biggest life insurer, which is also headed for the public markets in what is called as the ‘biggest IPO of the decade’, won’t be an easy task. LIC in its RFP has already issued an eligibility criteria with multiple factors that each amount to a set number of points. The points will be decided on factors such as the total value of digital transactions done by the company in 2019-20, with over ₹50 crore taking the highest points, number of years of experience in the industry, among others. For a company to win the bid, it will need a minimum of 75 points. But that’s not the only hiccup. To bid for LIC means the company would have to first give an Earnest Money Deposit OF ₹10 lakh and the final winner would have to submit a Performance Bank Guarantee (PBG) of ₹10 crore. And all of this makes it a little complicated. "Technically, because of bidding these end up being low revenue opportunities," a source at one of the top payment aggregators told Business Insider on the condition of anonymity. Interestingly, there are many more players entering the payments industry with full force. From Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance to the Jeff Bezos-led Amazon have partnered with banks and other organisations, to apply for a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/explained-the-nue-licence-for-payments-that-tata-ambani-and-bezos-have-applied-for/articleshow/81268434.cms">new umbrella entity (NUE) licence</a>, which will have powers similar to the apex body National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). TERA Finlabs is an Indian subsidiary of GAIN Credit, a leading UK digital lender which was launched in 2018 to expand their global footprint in digital lending. This marks the company's third acquisition after foraying into the B2B SME lending space with the launch of Razorpay Capital in 2019, it said in a statement. "The team at TERA FinLabs comes with exceptional domain knowledge in credit underwriting &amp; risk management and we see immense value in TERA Finlabs core lending infrastructure capabilities," said Harshil Mathur, CEO and Co-Founder, Razorpay. Razorpay Capital, along with TERA Finlab's technology capabilities, will be able to service the credit needs of over 10,000 businesses in India by the next year, the company said. Fintech startup Razorpay buys SaaS firm TERA Finlabs

Bengaluru, <keyword id="2461546" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="FinTech">Fintech</keyword> unicorn <keyword id="2777173" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Razorpay">Razorpay</keyword> on Friday announced to hire 650 <keyword id="6357081" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="employees">employees</keyword> across technology, <keyword id="6356288" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="product">product</keyword> and business teams in the next 10 months, to meet the growing payment and banking needs of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and freelancers. Of the 650 new positions for both freshers and lateral hires, 350 will be towards expanding the engineering and product teams, and the rest will form the customer experience, sales and marketing forces, the company said in a statement. The company which currently has 1,300 employees hired over 550 <keyword id="10750931" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="people-last-year">people last year</keyword> and witnessed a three times business growth in the pandemic-hit year. "Our hiring plans are driven by more investment in product development, customer experience and new additions to the existing product suite so that we cater to the ever-evolving payment and banking needs of SMEs &amp; MSMEs," said Chitbhanu Nagri, Senior Vice President, People Operations, Razorpay. The full-stack financial solutions company raised $100 million in its Series D round of funding in October last year, making it another Indian unicorn with over $1 billion in valuation, joining the big startup-turned-unicorn league of BYJU's, Swiggy, Zomato, Paytm and more. Razorpay is hiring for 650 roles across its engineering, product, sales, marketing and customer experience teams

The company’s finances dipped slightly during lockdown as customers shifted some part of their transactions to digital payments. However, lockdowns are only one part of the risk. The other longer-term risk is the policy push from both the government and the Reserve Bank of India who want people to use less cash and more digital payments in the time to come. More than two⁠-thirds of CMS’ revenue comes from picking up cash from the banks and delivering it to the ATMs. So far, thankfully for CMS, these calls for a cashless India have not yielded much result. Its share price at 10:00 am, the time of listing, was ₹436 versus the subscription price of ₹486. Within the first 10 minutes, the price was able to reach a high of ₹472.95 before dipping back down to ₹458 at 10:10 am. So, if you have the shares and are concerned that there’s been a loss on premium, keep the stock if you have the patient. Why are investors wary of Macrotech Developers? One of the reasons for investors to be wary was the company’s high level of debt. Around ₹1,500 crore of funds from the IPO will go towards repaying lenders to ease its balance sheets. But that doesn’t mean that it won’t need more money, which brings us two the second reason investors were vary about putting their money into the offer. Marcotech Developers is operating in a capital intensive sector, the real estate industry, during a pandemic. Any delays due to a lockdown, curfew or the implementation of restrictions like Section 144, could add to its costs — especially since the majority of its projects are in India’s financial capital, Mumbai. The city has been one of the worst hit in all of India during the second wave of the pandemic. “If the company does not have access to funds required on favourable terms, it may be required to delay or abandon some or all planned projects or reduce the scale of operations,” noted Capital Markets in its preview. The brokerage pointed out that the company has earlier difficulties in serving its debt. It was among the companies that availed the moratorium offered by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for six months during the pandemic, from March to August 2020. The size of Macrotech Developers has its own loopholes The problem with Macrotech Developers possibly having to reduce its scale of operations due to the uncertainty propagated by the pandemic is that it’s one thing it has playing in its favour. Macrotech Developers is one of the largest players in the Indian real estate market going up against behemoths like Godrej Properties, Sunteck Realty, and Oberoi Realty. And so far, it has consistently outperformed all its peers when it comes to sales, as per Hem Securities. It has a strong distribution network, not just in India, but in foreign markets like the UK, the US, Singapore and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). But even that comes with its own loopholes. “Large construction projects in all parts of the world provide opportunities for corruption, fraud or improper conduct, including bribery, deliberate poor workmanship, theft or embezzlement by employees, contractors or customers or the deliberate supply of low-quality materials, which may delay development of projects,” said Capital Market’s report. Power, banking and IT stocks see sharp sell-off on FII pull out and as investors carve out money for LIC IPO

<ul><li><keyword id="143842" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mobikwik">Mobikwik</keyword>, a digital payments company, has said that its payment gateway business has turned profitable. </li><li>With an IPO in mind, the company is now aiming for a ₹1.4 lakh crore annual payment volume from the payment gateway business.</li><li>Earlier in July, Mobikwik had reported a funding of ₹8.67 crores. </li></ul>Mobikwik, one of India’s leading digital payments companies, has claimed that its payment gateways vertical had turned profitable since April 2019. “Our focus on building the best tech stack for our merchants is evident in the growth and success of our Payment Gateway business. Our product and user experience (UX) philosophy is to keep the user experience simple and ultra fast. Payment Gateway is one of our fastest growing verticals and will play an instrumental role in our path to profitability,” said Upasana Taku, Co-Founder, MobiKwik. With this, the payments company now aims to ₹1.4 lakh crore annual payment volume for its payment gateway business. As a payment gateway, Mobikwik finds clients in businesses like Uber, IRCTC, Dream11, Bajaj Finance, Zomato, Grofers, Blue Dart, Delhivery, Dominos, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, etc. “Over 94 million unique cards are saved on MobiKwik PG platform; this includes 20 million credit cards which is 50% of all credit cards issued in India,” said the company’s official statement. In July, the company had also announced a new round of funding of ₹8.67 crore from Trifecta Capital and NDTV. Its previous investors include Sequoia Capital and American Express among others. According to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/ipos/fpos/ahead-of-ipo-mobikwik-scouts-for-investor-eyes-profit-from-fy21/articleshow/69810493.cms?from=mdr">reports</a>, Mobikwik is also planning to head for an IPO in the next three years. Paytm claims to hold over 50% of the market share and has said that it does 400 million transactions per month; is five times more than its next competitor. A report by Credit Suisse Group AG says that the Indian digital payments market will increase five-fold from the current $200 billion to $1 trillion by the year 2023. This has also resulted in many international players eyeing the Indian market like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/google-wallet-creator-osama-bediers-startup-poynt-will-launch-in-india-in-2019/articleshow/68145220.cms">Osama Bedier's Poynt.</a> Bedier is also credited to be the creator of the Google Wallet. In June 2019, Mobikwik had also partnered with DT One, a global B2B network for mobile recharge, giving its users the opportunity to recharge their phones in 150 countries. MobiKwik’s competitor in India, Paytm had already entered two international markets – Canada and Japan.

Heading for an IPO, Mobikwik reports a profit in its payment gateway business

<ul><li>India’s cybersecurity <keyword id="53650" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="watchdog">watchdog</keyword>, <keyword id="448001" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CERT-In">CERT-In</keyword>, has warned users about the ‘high’ number of vulnerabilities to WhatsApp and <keyword id="4936066" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="whatsapp-business">WhatsApp Business</keyword>’ older versions.</li><li>Meanwhile, malware disguised as an offer to turn WhatsApp’s traditional green into pink or gold is also making the rounds in group chats. </li><li>Users are recommended to keep their WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business mobile apps up to date and report to the company if they come across any suspicious links.</li></ul>The Indian cybersecurity watchdog, Cert-In, has issued a ‘high’ severity rating against WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. According to the vulnerability note, the emergency response team has found ‘multiple’ vulnerabilities within the mobile apps. And these loopholes could allow hackers to gain access to sensitive information about you. “Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code or access sensitive information on a target system,” <a href="https://cert-in.org.in/">said the note</a>. However, this is only an issue for users still running an old version of WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business. If your app is up to date, then your information should be safe. But that’s not it. A new threat has been making the rounds over group chat. The link entices users by offering to turn the WhatsApp interface from its traditional green color to a shade of pink as well as new features.
