Ravi Kishan, the Bhojpuri actor and the BJP candidate All eyes are set on the Gorakhpur constituency as the BJP is fielding Ravi Kishan, a Bollywood celebrity against the sitting MP of the SP who won during the bye elections. The key contest in Gorakhpur Lok Sabha constituency in 2019 Lok Sabha elections is among Ravi Kishan of the BJP (also called as Ravindra Shyamnarayan Shukla), Madhusudan Tripathi of the Congress, and Rambhual Nishad of the Samajwadi Party (SP). In 2009, BJP’s Adityanath won from this constituency having defeated the BSP candidate Rajmati Nishad. Ravi Kishan is a popular Bhojpuri actor and a well-known Bollywood celebrity. He contested in 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Jaunpur on a Congress ticket. He joined the BJP in 2017. Gorakhpur is one of the key constituencies for the BJP and Adityanath was elected for five times from here since 1999. He resigned his MP position in order to take charge as the Chief Minister of the state. During the bye elections, SP’s Praveen Kumar Nishad won this seat and became the MP. Due to this shocking defeat, the BJP was cautious of choosing the best candidate to contest from the seat. As per the observers, Ravi Kishan might prove to be the best choice for the party.

The <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> candidate Ravi Kishan easily wins the constituency, securing more than 60% of the votes. His closest rival, Rambual Nishad from the SP, won 35% of the votes. Fielding a Bhojpuri actor, Ravi Kishan who is largely an outsider, was in line with the BJP’s strategy of fielding celebrities and big name candidates in crucial constituencies, like Gautam Gambhir in East Delhi for example. Kishan, who is often referred to as the “‘Amitabh Bachchan of the East” had rebuked the outsider tag, claiming that he would live in <keyword id="43253" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gorakhpur">Gorakhpur</keyword> after elections. Interestingly, Kishan stood for elections in 2014 from the Jaunpur constituency in UP - for the <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> - and lost. He formally <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/bhojpuri-actor-ravi-kishan-congress-candidate-in-2014-formally-joins-bjp-1661069">joined the BJP i</a>n February 2017. This time around, with the electoral favourite on his side, Kishan seemed the man to beat. Ravi Kishan’s main job, on paper, was to redeem the BJP for its shock loss in last year’s bypolls in Gorakhpur. The seat has, incidentally, been held by the UP Chief Minister <keyword id="43254" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yogi-Adityanath">Yogi Adityanath</keyword> from 1998 to 2017, having won it five times in a row. The loss represented the BJP’s first loss of the seat in 27 years. In fact, Kishan was largely subsumed by Adityanath when it came to campaigning in the constituency. This was more a referendum on the rule of Adityanath, who reportedly handled the main address in several rallies while Kishan looked on. By Justin Rao Mumbai, Apr 16 () Actor-comic Vir Das says people will need to smile a lot more amid the coronavirus pandemic and comedians should step up to do the best job they've ever done. From his end, the comic is raising funds through 'Vir Das At Home' where he performs for an audience online."We are going to need to smile now more than ever and for a while. If you're a funny person, this is the time to do your job. The best you've ever done it... I'm trying to focus on fundraising. I'm doing a show every night on Zoom call where the proceeds are going to different charities. "This lockdown won't affect the privileged as much. We have got to do our part. So my main focus during the lockdown is to try and raise money," Das told .Before the pandemic brought everything to a standstill, Das had planned a world tour of 29 countries, which naturally got pushed.There has been a lot of conversation about how the way people consume entertainment stands to change post coronavirus. As a comic, who is used to performing in front of a large gathering, Das feels the impact will be there for sometime, but eventually, the urge to laugh will gather people together."Those are the things that come and go. From court jesters, impressionists, Jaspal Bhatti, Johnny Lever to us and the people who come after us, the urge to sit in a room and laugh with each other together, will always find a way back. That I'm not so worried about."The actor is currently gearing up for the release of the Netflix series, "Hasmukh", co-created by Das and filmmaker Nikkhil Advani.The series features Das in the titular role of a young man from Saharanpur, who has to kill people off stage to perform better on stage. The actor had written a pilot, nearly three years ago, and taken it to the "Kal Ho Naa Ho" director who felt it was funny but needed "more darkness and gravity."Together, they worked on it for six-seven months, got it green-lit and then ran a writers room. "Comedy isn't so much about telling jokes, it's about being yourself and telling jokes. 'Hasmukh' is this awkward, shy, man who has a lot of anger inside him. Which is who I was when I got into comedy, except I don't murder people. "But the first time I got a laugh was when I went on stage and yelled at a bunch of people. I was 22, life wasn't going well, I couldn't make rent, girls weren't talking to me and I yelled out all of that stuff."The series, directed by Nikhil Gonsalves, also features Ranvir Shorey, Manoj Pahwa, Ravi Kishan, Amrita Bagchi, Suhail Nayyar, Inaamulhaq and Raza Murad.With "Hasmukh", the 40-year-old "Go Goa Gone" actor got a chance to create a lot of the characters and deep dive in the "outrageous" universe of the show."I got to write them as really loud characters. Nikkhil really led me on 'Hasmukh.' We decided that I would be the in-charge of who Hasmukh is on stage and Nikkhil gets to shape who he is off stage. "He's a passive, underconfident character surrounded by these loud maniacs. That's what makes him frustrated and pop when he murders. He's only ever free when he murders or is on stage." Writing the show was a challenge on multiple levels for Das as Hasmukh is "diametrically opposite" to the comic. "He's a small town boy, a Hindi comedian. Also, to write for an artiste who doesn't know his voice yet. He's a terrible comedian, he's clueless. It's a very outrageous universe for a show."When I first came to Mumbai, I was a writer on various GEC (General Entertainment Channels) comedy and award shows. So a lot of it is also based on what I saw- the big, glamorous GEC world of those. Mindshare recently rolled out a high-scaled engagement program for Horlicks using mSamvaad, to reach out to mothers in the media dark areas of Bihar for its new variant that improves nutrient absorption among children. The aim of the program was to generate awareness on the brand's scientific credentials through an audio message recorded in the voice of legendary Bhojpuri star, Ravi Kishan. Mindshare says that the initiative saw a great response from the consumers. The Horlicks nutrient absorption communication reached 4 million unique users. The 10-minutes conference bridge saw a breakthrough of 29% completed listenership. Close to 81% recalled the new variant for its emphasis on nutrient absorption in children. Horlicks observed an increase of 33% TOM and 12% of L3M usage. We recently caught up with Niraj Ruparel, National Head – Mobile, Mindshare India, who spoke to us about the scope of this innovation and how brands can effectively use mSamvaad to reach out to media dark regions. Edited excerpts: Q) What is the primary idea behind mSamvaad? Every one of us prefers verbal communication over any other medium as it provides flexibility to express views very easily. Till now, there was no such platform available which could connect masses through this most preferred medium - voice. Most of the other platforms require stable internet connectivity which is another challenge in addition to the restriction on the number of participants on a live call. To address all these challenges, we decided to develop a platform through which large number of people can be connected and addressed live, even on a feature phone having no internet or smart features. That’s how the mSamvaad platform evolved over a period of time. Q) Are brands realizing the power of voice? Do you see more brands open to experimenting with voice? As I mentioned, voice is the most preferred medium of communication; especially in media dark areas. We have been working with top brands and advertisers in India and all of them use voice in some or the other form of communication with their TG. Brands are always looking for innovative ways to engage with the audiences and whenever we are able to create novelty in the voice space, they are always open to adopting it. In the past we have created tons of device-agnostic platforms on IVRS ranging from voice based prank call/tambola/gaming/riddle/humor station/music station, to name a few. In 2019, we have created a lot of engagement using voice skills on Google Assistant/Amazon Alexa for smart internet enabled devices. Q) Can you explain how the technology of mSamvaad works? The most important element of mSamvaad is the telecom infrastructure, that is, the calling lines and high-end data and application servers. mSamvaad has the capacity to connect 25,000 concurrent users on a live call and hence the infra plays a significant role. As a process, the conference moderator uploads the mobile database of these participants in the system to dial-out calls to all of them in parallel. Within seconds, maximum audience is connected on the platform along with the speaker who can be a celebrity, brand ambassador, or a leader. Now the speaker can interact with all of them. To have a controlled environment, by-default, all the participants except the keynote speaker are in mute stage so there is no noise. There is a live MIS Panel which keeps showing the attendees count along with their name and numbers, so the speaker and the conference moderator can view who all are connected on the call. Once the speaker’s address is over, the moderator invites questions; anyone can press any key on the mobile keypad to show the interest in asking question. Randomly, moderator unmutes a few participants, one by one, so that they can ask the question which everyone can hear. The speaker answers the question and takes the next question; likewise, few questions are taken. And in this entire process, internet or any other special app/feature is not required. Q) What are the benefits brands can derive from using mSamvaad? Personalization is the most important benefit of mSamvaad. Through mSamvaad, brands can connect with their consumers directly, one-on-one to address their queries and provide important information. Also, this is done at a large scale, so time and cost of this personalized communication is significantly less.
