Although it's a mundane task, the sense of responsibility boosts her self-esteem and independence.It's amazing to see as a parent because those are the characteristics you want instilled in your children.Some friends are shocked when I tell them about it. One said he never lets his kids out of his sight. "Aren't you afraid she'll get kidnapped?" he asked.<h2 id="c1671856-2632-4bc6-bd01-ec3f5ae273bb">My first reaction was to say 'no' when Paige asked to do the shopping</h2>I'm not living my life day-to-day <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elizabeth-smart-kidnapped-14-now-very-protective-of-her-kids-2022-11">worried about kidnappings</a>. I've researched and figured out how misinformed we are regarding the risk.Social media has amplified the danger, making it sound big and scary. But statistically speaking, we exist in a safer, more supportive environment than ever.Paige's shopping expeditions were triggered by the little kids' carts in the front of the store. She enjoyed wheeling them around the place.Then, at the beginning of 2023, when she was 7, she said, "Hey, can I do it myself now?" My first reaction was to say "no." But I rapidly questioned my thinking.A couple of years ago, I read "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.thecoddling.com/">The Coddling of the American Mind</a>." The authors discuss the need to give kids more freedom and independence. They advise parents to unwire their brains to think the world is dangerous.<h2 id="7f9f49db-222d-4b61-8590-92b718cc27e0">I accompanied my kids to the park out of habit</h2>The book was an eye-opener — research-based, factual, and data-driven. It showed how people's fear is overblown about stranger danger and child abduction.I recognized that the everyday parenting habits had crept up on me in escorting my kids to parks and playgrounds. We live in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-spark-delivery-driver-gated-communities-smaller-tips-than-apartments-2024-1">family-friendly, gated community</a> in Arizona, but I still watched Paige and her sister, Rees, now 12, when they went outside.The park was minutes from the house, and I accompanied them whenever they wanted to go. I wasn't really harboring these fears that I needed to protect them. If you go to the park, be at the park. Use other people's phones if you need us. Or we'll find you if we need you.After Paige said she wanted to do the grocery shopping, I thought, "I just need to think about the steps here." I looked at it as something for her to learn. We do the shopping almost mindlessly as adults, but for a child, it's new territory.Grocery shopping has three parts: what you need, where it is, and checking out. We broke it down. For several weeks on consecutive Fridays, I gave her the list and shadowed her to say, "OK, here's what we need." It was adorable.Soon, I began hanging out outside the store. Now, I'll catch up on my email, or when she's been with Rees, I'll run off to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-walmart-and-target-let-customers-keep-some-returns-2021-1">do a return at the store </a>next door. It's created a bit of efficiency.Meanwhile, I've prepared Paige for if or when she gets questioned by staff or other shoppers. She knows to say, "No, my dad's here. I'm practicing grocery shopping by myself." So far, nobody has bothered her. She projects a high level of certainty.<h2 id="1d25c3c2-6a25-48fc-9b7a-2ba87c6a6b01">Paige embraces responsibility and independence</h2>I admire her problem-solving skills and willingness to assert herself if she needs help. Grocery shopping is super fun for her. She wants to do it because it makes her feel responsible.As parents, we can learn to use seemingly mundane tasks in creative ways to teach our kids life and social skills and confidence. It doesn't have to be some huge, complicated project. New Delhi, Mar 25 () To ensure sufficient supply during the lockdown, the government on Thursday decided to increase monthly quota of subsidized foodgrains by 2 kg to 7kg per person through ration shops for 80 crore beneficiaries.A decision in this regard was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi."The government has decided to provide 7 kg per person of foodgrains to 80 crore people under the Public Distribution System (PDS), which the world's largest food security system," Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar told media after the meeting.The cost of wheat is Rs 27/kg, which will be provided at a subsidised rate of Rs 2 kg, while the cost of rice is about Rs 32/kg but will be supplied at Rs 3/kg through ration shops, he said.All states have been asked to take foodgrains from the Centre in advance for distribution through the PDS, he added.Under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), the government is supplying 5 kg of foodgrains per month to over 80 crore people at a highly subsidised price.The decision to allocate additional foodgrains through the PDS has been taken as state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) is saddled with wheat and rice stock. Companies are relying more on first-party data to build personal relationships with customers and convince them to make purchases. This data will only grow in importance as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/digital-ad-prices-are-skyrocketing-in-2022-2">social media ads</a> become more costly, and <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-27/google-delays-phasing-out-ad-cookies-on-chrome-until-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Internet cookies</a>, which help track users on different sites, are phased out. Experts that spoke to Insider said many of the business strategies deployed by retailers tap into shoppers' fear of missing out, or FOMO, on the latest and most popular products. Offering incentives for adding more items to online carts like free shipping is another example of the psychological tricks a retailer can play. Nike and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lululemon-analysts-warn-about-companys-over-saturation-2023-1">Lululemon</a> are two companies leading the pack on using FOMO to sell products, according to Manini Madia, adjunct professor at <a href="https://www8.gsb.columbia.edu/cbs-directory/detail/mm5834" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Columbia Business School</a> and expert in consumer shopper behavior. Lululemon's app will explicitly let customers know how many items are left in their size. Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-making-snkrs-app-fairer-fighting-bots-2021-12">Nike uses its SNKRs app</a> to gather information about customers and keeps them checking the app frequently through notifications."Nike does product drops on their SNKRS app. So you have to download the app, which means you give them your information. You have to enable their notifications to show you when certain sneakers are going to drop, and they give you a window of 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning," Madia said. "People who are sneakerheads know that that inventory is going to be super limited and it's probably going to sell out in the first couple of minutes."Retailers have been deploying tactics that close more sales and increase the order basket for well over a decade. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/covid-19-e-commerce-spending-increased-183-billion-2021-3">we're shopping online now more than ever before</a>, and these subtle nudges are starting to feel more widespread."There are a ton of cognitive biases that retailers know about and use in shopping experiences. Most of them started in-store and have moved online," said Jason Goldberg, chief commerce strategy officer at marketing firm Publicis Groupe and an e-commerce expert who goes by the nickname @Retailgeek. By opting into emails and text messages, customers open the door to be contacted about everything from seasonal sales a company is offering to a reminder about items left in their carts."Having a cell phone number is probably the single most valuable source of communication with a customer right now," Madia said. Emails can be filtered or avoided altogether, but a consumer is much more likely to click on a text. Some companies use this tactic better than others. The key is not to bombard shoppers with communication. Startups like Klaviyo and Twilio, which offer technology for brands to create personalized customer engagement platforms, are used by DTC companies like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toilet-paper-startup-who-gives-a-crap-raises-30-million-2021-9">Who Gives A Crap</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/portable-campfire-and-fire-pit-brands-are-thriving-amid-pandemic-2020-10">Solo Stove</a> to create deeper relationships with customers."The communication needs to be tailored for how that customer interacts with your brand," Madia said. "If they bought a down coat and they live in a zip code that has a four-season climate, in the spring, you may want to show them some rain coats, and then you have a better shot of getting them to complete a transaction."<div type="image" title="Apple Pay option on iPhone" height="3333" width="4444" msid="97489818" hostid="261"></div><h2>Apple Pay and buy now, pay later</h2>Who hasn't abandoned their online cart because they were too lazy to grab a credit card out of their wallet? Multiple payment options have now been introduced to consumers to make the online checkout process easier. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazons-1-click-patent-competition-shopify-bolt-fast-2022-4">One-click checkout on Amazon</a>, Apple Pay, and Google Pay are able to save customers' credit card information online. Buy Now, Pay Later options Klarna and Afterpay allow shoppers to purchase items now and set up monthly payment plans.In making the checkout process easier, these payment forms improve conversion rates for retailers that adopt them.According to a <a href="https://www.insiderintelligence.com/topics/category/afterpay" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Insider Intelligence and eMarketer study</a>, more than half of Gen Z digital shoppers used a BNPL service in 2022. And the list of retailers across the industry adding Google Pay, Apple Pay, and PayPal as checkout options continues to grow. These services "take the friction out of the final step," Madia said. <h2>Buy online, pick up in store</h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bopis-helps-retailers-win-pandemic-but-can-be-difficult-2020-12">Buy online, pick up instore</a> was all the rage during the pandemic. Retailers still love it as it saves on shipping.But there is another benefit, Madia says. It's a great way for retailers to increase a customers' basket size by bringing them into the store. "You may want to pick up in store because you want the item faster than it can be delivered," Madia said. "But there's a good chance that you will buy something else while you're in there."<h2><div type="image" title="J. Crew shopping site" height="806" width="1252" msid="97489820" hostid="261"></div>Scarcity </h2>Implying that an item is scarce taps into what Goldberg from Publicis Groupe called our "lizard brain." So much of how we shop and make purchase decisions is subconscious, he said, and while you may rationally know that scarcity is a marketing tactic, your subconscious doesn't. "That was a survival strength that served our ancestors really well," he said. "We've probably in many ways outgrown the necessity part in the modern era, but it's still hardwired into the neuropathways of our brains."Examples of this tactic include when a retailer says there's limited inventory of a product and it's not coming back in stock, when their website shows an item is selling fast, or when items can only be held in your cart for a limited window. While it may or may not be what Goldberg called "false scarcity" — meaning, retailers actually have plenty of the product in stock — there's no doubt it's effective. <div type="image" title="Gracey Ryback, an Amazon influencer, holds several livestreams a week marketing Amazon products." height="1305" width="1741" msid="97489822" hostid="261"></div><h2>Social proof</h2>Positive ratings and reviews are the most common form of social proof. These supply 'evidence' that people bought a product before you did and had a good outcome. But we're increasingly seeing more sophisticated versions of the social proof tactic. Depending on how much data retailers have about you, they're able to show you when people in your area, or even people you follow on social media, bought a product and liked it. Then, of course, there's influencer marketing, where celebrities and social media stars are paid to promote products tailored to what their audiences and followers might be tempted to purchase. "Sometimes the tactic is used to make you confident to buy the product, or sometimes it's used to make you confident to pay this price for the product, or sometimes it's to pick this size for the product," Goldberg said. "It's telling you this is super popular and that you should for sure buy it." <h2>Was/Is pricing</h2>We've all seen it while online and in-store shopping: a product has two prices listed, a higher one that's crossed out and a new, lower price. Called was/is pricing, this tactic is designed to let shoppers know they're getting a good deal — or in some cases, trick them into it."There's an ethical version of that that really happens, and then there's an unethical version," Goldberg said. This type of pricing is common at outlets, he said. In an ethical example, a product that originally cost $100 ends up at an outlet store and is discounted to $30 — it is, in fact, a good deal. But an unethical example would be if a product that was only ever made for an outlet and priced at $30 gets the was/is treatment, tricking you into thinking you've found a bargain. <h2>Tips for avoiding retailers' marketing tricks</h2>Just being aware of these marketing tactics isn't enough to protect you from them, Goldberg said. "What you can't do is just say, 'oh, I'm smarter than the marketing, and I'm going to know about it and therefore avoid it,'" he said. "What you can do is build new habits that make those tactics less effective on you." Goldberg recommended giving yourself a "cool-down period" after you add items to your cart, even if it's just for a few hours. Separating the add-to-cart process from the check-out process should help you make a more rational decision, he said. Another tip: don't fall for the discounts and give your contact information to companies. That invites more targeted marketing that may get you to spend more. Madia also suggested signing up for subscribe-and-save options on websites like Amazon on products that you buy frequently. "That way, you're not constantly going on Amazon, Target, or whatever websites can be triggering for you to make an impulse purchase," Madia said. "If you sign up for the paper towels, you don't have to go in and complete a transaction where you might add on some other items in your cart that you maybe would regret later."

These included pasta, soup, hand wash, and hand sanitizer, as well as multipacks of toilet paper and kitchen roll.One checkout worker at Morrisons who wished to remain anonymous said customers had been stocking up on canned food and toilet roll. They described their store was "worse than a bad Christmas, it was horrible."Tesco imposed its own three-item limits on Friday morning for flour, dried pasta, toilet rolls, baby wipes, and anti-bacterial wipes, the grocer confirmed to Business Insider. The limit extends to a small number of products online, such as rice and canned vegetables, it added.Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced stricter lockdown measures on Tuesday, including a 10 p.m. curfew for pubs and restaurants, and extending the use of face masks. Officer workers were also told to work from home wherever possible.Social media users began posting images of empty shelves on Monday, when rumors of the stricter measures began to emerge, and toilet paper sales rose 23% in the week to Tuesday, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/22/toilet-roll-sales-rise-by-more-than-a-fifth-amid-new-uk-covid-19-restrictions">The Guardian reported</a>. Owning to their strategic location and high footfall, we are hopeful that they can emerge as focal points for all banking transactions, including remittances,” a government official, requesting anonymity, told The Economic Times. 
 
 
"Unless interbank transactions increase, these fair price shops will not be able to serve their purpose. The idea is that the cardholder of any bank can walk into a ration shop and deposit or withdraw money”, another official, aware of the deliberations, told the ET. 
 
A task force on the promotion of payments through cards and digital, set up under Department of Investment &amp; Public Asset Management (DIPAM) secretary Neeraj Gupta, is also looking into the issue, the official quoted above added. 
 
Aadhaar-Enabled Payment System (AEPS) will allow online financial transactions using Aadhar credentials. The government has already announced its plans to install electronic Point of Sale (ePoS) devices at all fair price shops across the country by March 2017 to plug leakages.

According to latest government data, around 25 crore accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) with balance of around Rs 44,480 crore. Of this, around 13 crore accounts have been seeded with Aadhaar and only 23% accounts have zero balance.

In what vented out in to anger, the villagers in Bardua lost their temper after owner refused them to accept the now-defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currencies for groceries. 
 It all happened when those villagers went to buy food grains to the PDS and shop owner <keyword id="3839202" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="munnilal-ahirwar">Munnilal Ahirwar</keyword> refused to accept the old notes. The enraged people forces entered the shop and looted sacks of wheat, sugar and rice. <keyword id="963123" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ahirwar">Ahirwar</keyword> , in a police complaint has blamed village sarchpanch <keyword id="3839200" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="nonhelal-patel">Nonhelal Patel</keyword> for the incident. On the defence, <keyword id="6362344" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patel">Patel</keyword> alleged that Ahirwar had been misappropriating rations for long time.

<ul><li>Due to the rising retail inflation, <keyword id="471072" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-consumers" source="Orion">Indian consumers</keyword> are struggling to meet their living expenses.</li><li>Not only have they put their big life plans on hold, but <keyword id="60468" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumers" source="Orion">consumers</keyword> are also switching to <keyword id="14587384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smaller-products" source="Orion">smaller products</keyword> and <keyword id="14587385" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="less-popular-brands" source="Orion">less popular brands</keyword> to deal with high <keyword id="118688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflationary-pressures" source="Orion">inflationary pressures</keyword>.</li><li>They are leaving behind their old habits of bulk buying their ration.</li><li>As per Kantar’s recent report, consumers are buying smaller packs, which run out quickly and lead to high purchase frequency for FMCG brands.</li></ul>Inflationary pressures have pushed Indian consumers to switch to smaller packs. However, soon enough, the pack runs out, and consumers need to revisit supermarkets to refill ration. This has increased the purchase frequency of Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) products. As per data analytics firm Kantar, with lockdown being lifted, India’s FMCG brands witnessed a huge jump in their Consumer Reach Points (CRPs), which takes into account a brand’s reach in the country, overall penetration, and purchase frequency. The report predicts that with high inflation this year, purchase frequency and brand penetration are expected to grow even further. “When consumers are faced with inflationary trends, they tend to shift to smaller packs but buy them more often to meet their overall requirements. This results in improved frequency,” explained K. Ramakrishnan, Managing Director- South Asia, Worldpanel Division at Kantar. Established brands who were quick to read the market and launch smaller packs were able to leapfrog. As per Kantar, the bigger the brand, the faster the growth they witness. As a result, FMCG giants with over 61% penetration levels grew the fastest, with over 8% growth in 2021 over 2020. “This year as consumers returned to the marketplace in droves after tightening conditions in the by-gone year, frequency jumped significantly, which is reflected in the big jumps most brands took in their CRPs. This is why bigger brands always have an advantage,” said Ramakrishnan. For the last ten years, Parle Products has been indomitable in terms of reach, penetration, and purchase frequency. This year, too, Parle held the first spot with CRPs of 6,531 million and witnessed a growth of 14%. Sharing why Parle continues to hold the first position despite high inflation, Ramakrishnan said, “One of the things that are working for them [winner brands such as Parle] is that they are reaching a large number of people, therefore, their distribution is working for them as they are building their penetration. Second is pack play -- they continue to hold on to Rs 2 pack and Rs 5 pack, which helps with growth significantly. So lower the pack size, the more the frequency, therefore growth in CRPs.” After Parle, Amul, Britannia, Clinic Plus and Tata Consumer Products have scored high on CRPs. Newer FMCG brands get more popularity in India New entrants such as sweet and snack manufacturer Haldiram and biscuit and confectionary maker Anmol joined the billion CRP club, improving their reach and penetration in the country by leaps and bounds. Many regional brands also witnessed an uptick in CRPs, such as spice brands like Rajesh and Rakesh. In the dairy industry, Kerala’s Milma, Karnataka’s Nandini milk, and Telangana’s Vijaya also entered the list. Growth is driven by food, beverages and haircare In 2021, 70% of FMCG brands saw an improvement in their CRPs over 2020 -- jumping from 56%. This growth was driven by food, health and beauty, and beverage brands. Beverage brands witnessed an 18% growth in 2021, followed by food at 15% and health and beauty at 7%. Nescafe registered a 19% CRP growth within beverage brands, followed by Boost at 15%. Some snacking brands grew over 30%, with Balaji growing by 49%, followed by Kurkure at 45% and Bingo at 37%. Small packs are pushing consumers to shop more often, leading to an increase in purchase frequency of FMCG brands: Kantar report

New Delhi, Dec 20 () No new ration card will be required for availing the portability benefit under the government's ambitious 'one nation, one ration card' initiative to be rolled out across the country from June 2020, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said on Friday.
Currently, the initiative is being implemented on a pilot basis. Inter-state as well as state level portability is being tried in a cluster approach. The government's aim is to implement the initiative across India from June 1, next year.
Under the initiative, eligible beneficiaries would be able to avail their entitled foodgrain under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) from any Fair Price Shop in the country using the same ration card.
Paswan, who reviewed the implementation of the initiative, said, "There were reports in some newspapers that new ration cards will be needed for this scheme. It is baseless. No new ration card (is) required. Existing card will be valid pan India".
Beneficiaries will avail subsidised foodgrain using their existing ration card by biometric authentication on electronic point of sale (ePoS) machines, he said in a series of tweets.
The minister said the state level portability of ration card is fully operational in 12 States and partially in four states.
The 'state-level portability' allows the ration card holders to lift their foodgrain from any ePoS enabled fair price shops (FPS) within their district or state.
Whereas 'inter-state portability' is operational in eight states in clusters of two-adjoining states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana; Gujarat and Maharashtra; Haryana and Rajasthan and Karnataka and Kerala, the minister added.
"Four more states Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Jharkhand and Tripura will be clubbed with these 8 states from January 1, 2020 to make one cluster," Paswan said.
He said the beneficiaries from all these 12 states will be able to lift their entitled foodgrain from any FPS of these 12 states.
Paswan said the e-biometric authentication of beneficiaries and state-level portability is essential for distribution of foodgrain under the 'One Nation One Ration Card' scheme.
However, Tamil Nadu and Delhi governments are not using ePoS devices in ration shops. Assam government has not taken any initiative so far to install ePoS devices, he said.
In Tamil Nadu, the use of ePoS devices in 34,700 FPSs has not started despite achieving 100 per cent Aadhaar seeding in ration cards.
In Delhi, the use of ePoS devices remain suspended since April 2018 despite implementation of 100 per cent bio-metric based distribution through ePoS in all its FPSs.
Whereas the Assam government has not yet taken any initiation so far towards the installation of ePoS devices in 38,300 FPSs even after continuous persuasion by the department, he added.
Under the NFSA, about 75 crore beneficiaries have been covered so far against the target of 81.35 crore, as per official data. LUX BAL

New Delhi, Feb 28 () Four more states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, will roll out the ration card portability by next month, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said on Friday. The government aims to implement ration card portability in the entire country from June 1 under the initiative called 'One Nation, One Ration Card'. Under the initiative, eligible beneficiaries would be able to avail their entitled foodgrains under the National Food Security Act (NFSA from any Fair Price Shop in the country using the same ration card. "Already, 12 states have implemented the ration card portability. Four more states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar will do by March and the rest other states by June 1," Paswan said at an agri-summit organised by BusinessLine newspaper here. The portability of ration card will end corruption in the Public Distribution System (PDS) and help beneficiaries avail their entitlement anywhere in the country, he said. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Maharasthra, Haryana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Jharkhand and Tripura are 12 states where ration card portability has been implemented, he added. The minister also said that no new ration card will be required under the 'One Nation, One Ration Card' initiative. The minister said that direct benefit transfer of PDS foodgrains being implemented in Chandigarh, Puducherry and Dadra and Nagar Haveli on a pilot basis has not been successful because of lack of bank facilities and power shortage. In many states, door-step delivery of foodgrains has been initiated. The PDS has been streamlined as Aadhar details have been seeded with 90 per cent of ration cards in the country and point of sale machines have been installed in 96 per cent of the fair price shops, he added. Under the NFSA, about 75 crore beneficiaries have been covered so far against the target of 81.35 crore, as per official data. On price rise in essential items like onion, the minister said unfortunately consumers in the country cry when prices of commodities produced by farmers go up and don't bother when prices of products like shoe or watch rises.
