The mindset isn’t unlike what the world had to experience during the second world war, according to billionaire Ratan Tata. Just as the effects of the war weren’t limited to the western hemisphere, the effects of the lockdown won’t be limited to India. “I think it's not limited to India, what I'm about to say, I'd say with some degree of concern. You compare our situation to a World War, which was destructive, cities got bombed, manufacturing industries were disabled and yet it was in those times that many new technologies were developed. But the entrepreneurs who were supported by their governments to open new doors if you might. That could be the case again,” explained Tata. “It's not a world war but it's like a world war,” he said not unlike UN Secretary Antonio Guterres in April, who also pointed out that the current pandemic is the biggest challenge that the world has had to deal with since World War Two. The only difference is that, at the time, efforts were directed to a wartime effort and, this time, they’ve been redirected to ensuring people can stay at home. In a way, that’s actually better but the economic pressures on the economy are along the same lines. “There's a dramatic need for vaccines, there's a dramatic need for solutions. And strange things happen and I think we really have to look back and say with so and so innovativeness really has its roots quite often at a time of crisis like the crisis we have on our hands today,” explained Tata. Nothing is ‘too far out’ “And so there's an initial ‘throw your hands up’ you have this crisis and then there is our own innovativeness that comes to play. That's a time we need to support to invest. To not dismiss something as being too far out, but being something we should look at,” Tata said explaining how a crisis can give birth to innovation. “Well, I think investors should be keeping their powder dry and that might seem to be very prudent. It may also be very self-defeating. That now might be the time when investors should be looking at opportunities like they did in the 70s and 80s. Where it was driven by the creation of the integrated circuit or it was created by moving to a digital world or looking at nanotechnology as the means or looking at biology or sub nano driven projects, whatever it was the 70s and 80s were those kinds of heavy times when those things happen,” he explained. In today’s day and age, it’s already pushing AI-enabled drones and robotics to the forefront as a way of enforcing social distancing more effectively. “So today one could have a bunch of investors who would say I'll back this company because it's being driven to do something differently rather than say the right now is not the time to look at something new,” said Tata. “And I would like to say that to me the virus will disappear and in a period of time but the innovativeness that we bring during these difficult times would be something we could look back on and say there was a good part of what we faced the hardship that we went through, had its up moments which we availed of,” he explained. Governments have a major role to play in Journalists, politics, and economists have all made comparisons that compare the current crisis to the second World War, regardless of whether it’s with respect to the scope of challenges that are presented or the scale of economic dislocation. In addition to taking advantage of existing expertise that entrepreneurs can offer, one lesson to take away from the time is that there needs to be a centralised and coordinated government response. “Yes, to take an example, if you look at the US. Then you look at what organizations like DARPA have done as the government supporting new technologies in biotechnology or integrated circuits or in the total variety of things the government has supported - three, four, five billion dollars which the private sector would not have been able to do. They have ushered in new industries because of their ability to come up with the funds earmarked for a particular development,” Tata said. “And if we had at a time like this had a way of marshalling some funds. In certain areas, we could have another wave of innovativeness arising out of a problem just like we've had in World War 2 or the Cold War. We could look at the plus side of that which caused innovation to take place with or perhaps not have happened or taken much longer to do than they have done,” Tata concluded. So it would be fair to say that we are going to see the same kind of innovativeness created in the same kind of situation like you have heard many times over. How you look at opportunities and that how you package them are different and this situation does give us an opportunity to innovate,” he explained. Technology is going to have a major part to play in the post COVID world When asked if technology will have a major part to play in availing the opportunities but also solving the challenges which India’s entrepreneurs are now facing, Tata said, “I think the quick answer that I find is yes. We can find answers in how to operate in a new scenario. Our willingness to do that or our interest in finding those new solutions, that are the key.” “So, I guess one way to look at this is not to look at the changes that we are faced with but to look at this as the new landscape or a new playing field. And applying our adaptive nature and innovativeness to finding solutions and hopefully looking back and saying this problem and this challenge gave us a new way to do things. As you mentioned digitizing at home is the new way to bring your customer into your phone. To deal with things as they would be in normal circumstances, but the circumstances are new. And I can say that looking at the situation as it stands. I'm sure there are going to be situations where we're going to say, why did we not do this earlier?” he added. According to Sethi, entrepreneurs are going to be looking at new business models, new products, new services, new revenue models, which perhaps were not being looked at earlier. Interpreting the mindset of an entrepreneur during the coronavirus crisis On the one hand, there’s opportunity but on the other there are hardships. The dichotomy between the two presents a challenge for entrepreneurs in India. For someone looking to enter the market right now, the motivation could vary from person to person. “I think there could be multiple views on this. One could do it because the entrepreneur is enterprising, unwilling to sit and moan about the changing situation and the need to undo what he has done.That's one type,” said Tata. “The other type is when it's not looked at as a problem, it's looked at as you said as an opportunity. And the excitement of finding a new way to do things. I know when I was a younger person in the organization, one of the most exciting times that I have had is where you can sit down with a bunch of your colleagues and brainstorm. And when you brainstormed, it enabled you to look for different ways to do things to beat your competition, or to reduce your costs or to change the way in which you operate. And if we are seeing that happen it could bring about a new way, it stops us from being traditional. It forces us to be innovative. And that would be the biggest opportunity we have. The next is can we be innovative first? Can we do it better than our peers in other parts of the world? But that would come later,” he added. But, in order to find success, you need to understand the customer A business won’t have a lot of success if it doesn’t understand the needs of its customers. Sometimes even customers don’t know what they want, but provided they’re excited by the product — they will welcome it. “I think consumer behavior is a little based on many different metrics. It's a willingness to be exposed to the excitement of doing things a different way. It deals exactly with the innovativeness of the entrepreneur in making this the packaging that he is offering to the customer,” said Tata. “If it excites the customer, if it is packaged nicely and well thought through, I think the consumer will welcome it. He will not resist it. And I think the transformation we sold from the offline to the online, has been an indication of a large consumer base willing to look at a new way to buy, a new way to sell and a new way to experience in terms of dealing with mercantile issues. And I think we're looking at that likely to happen or continue to happen in the future,” he explained. When it comes to the digital element of payments, “I think there's an element of the marketplace that would be willing to pay more because more is being done to the product and to the customer. And he looks at that as a convenience to be willing to pay more for that. And there's another segment of the customer who is doing this because he expects to see it being more economic for him. When you put those two things together. And the consumer has defined what in his mind is an acceptable cost. The entrepreneur has put more into that package than the customer had earlier been able to access,” he remarked. Maintaining the balance with the human side of business The human side of business is important, but it’s not individuals but the relationships they’re harnessing that play an important role. “I'd like to say that that's something I can't answer generally because I think you have to be looking at individual businesses and the leading entrepreneurs that are driving those businesses. In many cases the innovation of the change is driven by the innovativeness of the entrepreneur rather than the changes sitting to be undertaken. The opportunity is there, somebody has to see the opportunity and package it in a manner that makes sense. Debug it and push it forward,” said Tata. “So when you look at music then done by Apple or whether you look at an electric car from a non-car manufacturer, you look at the power grid distribution. Decentralized power is what Tesla is doing to the home. And when you look at the delivery of medicines and doctor examinations that sync with a general practitioner if you might. You look at the input of data from the patient to the doctor, on your wrist or or on some decoder somewhere on your body. You look at remote medic medicine and surgery. It's there. Today it's surgery through manipulators but tomorrow it could be done sitting in San Francisco with a surgery being done in Bombay,” he said citing some examples. “It's how far can you stretch the envelope? And I think what you're looking at and what you're experiencing is that there's no limit to that envelope which a few years ago, we had kept saying we have stretched it to its limits. That doesn't hold true today and that's the opportunity,” Tata explained. Do, or do not — There is no try “I don't think there's advice that can be during [the coronavirus pandemic]. I think the motivator is within the entrepreneur. Just in the few minutes we've been talking to each other. We are drivers probably looking at the collapse of the world around us. And in a few minutes we've been talking about the future that it may force on us. Not as a disaster, not as a destruction, but as an opportunity. And it's not you or I that makes that happen,” Tata told Sethi. “It's the drive in the entrepreneurs’ spirit that enables that to take place. And so I would say that the message that one would give, would really be to look at this as a moment of opportunity and use that as in the means of seeing whether we can look at new areas in a new way. Time frames that were never before considered possible and can just have new ways to look at things that become the way of life. What would we be today if we didn't have the web?” he said. “If we look back and say how did we manage with that or would without it? It would be a good soul searching question to us. So I think my message to an entrepreneur would be to use this time as an opportunity to innovate more. Not to make it discourage you, but look at this as a real opportunity to look at having a long-term vision, blue sky and daydream through the whole technology routine. There are going to be areas that you can initiate not the same idea that you have in the past but fresh ideas that will sail you through this period,” Tata concluded. Billionaire Ratan Tata's advice to entrepreneurs — how to set up 'disaster proof' business in the post-COVID world

This was said to be one of the suggestions among many which were ignored by Mistry. 
 Such incidents led to trust deficit amongst the two and finally led to his sacking, two people from <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata Group</keyword> told ET. Trustees felt the time for reaping the cash was right as TCS would find it tough to sustain the hefty dividend payouts going forward. TCS shares hit an all-time high in October 2014, but like other sectoral rivals of late, faced pressures on the back of growth worries. 
 <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword>, at present holds about 74% shares in TCS. At the peak time, five percent stake would have gotten them around $3 billion. 
 
The Tata Group's $25-billion debt has squeezed the liquidity needed to rejig growth for some of the major operating companies. ET reported Mistry’s supporters, however, feel that Tata Sons under <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword> as a chairman didn’t dilute the TCS stake even as the group struck big leveraged buyouts, which otherwise could have been done with the capital coming from monetising the shares of the country's biggest tech services company . 
 
The holding in TCS, worth about $32 billion, was always considered a lifeline for Tata Sons, but has rarely been used. 
 
Another thing that the Trusts were concerned about was the roadmap Mistry had for the conglomerate heavily relied on TCS growing at 10% annually, which now seems to be impossible as there is too much turbulence in the IT sector. 
 
The group had an idea about it taking potential blows for firing Mistry, byt Ratan Tata said he was ready to take it on his image in the interests of corrective action, according to Bombay House insiders loyal to him. They also told ET, that Mistry along with his team was unfairly targeting a man who had quietly retired and never attended a single Tata Sons board meeting as chairman emeritus. 
 
“The Tata Sons chairmen in the past, despite controlling the Trusts, saw their roles as a job holder , unlike Mistry who behaved like an owner . I think that explains why Mistry has not reconciled to the recent developments. When 70% of the shareholders (66% of Trusts plus certain Tata family holdings) said they have lost trust in the chairman, nothing else matters," one of the senior Tata officials, told ET. 
 The group executives said the Mistry family had gained ground and their ties with India's largest conglomerate vastly improved under Ratan Tata, which was acknowledged by the patriarch, <keyword id="6689214" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pallonji-Mistry">Pallonji Mistry</keyword> , who was effusive in his praise of Tata's contribution when he gave up executive functions. " After the latest developments, there's a conscious effort to spin stories that Ratan Tata was against the Mistrys," these executives said.

Former Chairman of Tata Group, Ratan Tata, who received Sayaji Ratna Award instituted by an NGO, said India needs to transform a place that supports entrepreneurship and should cultivate an environment that enables setting up of new businesses. 
 
He also advised budding entrepreneurs to think about what they can do for the country, rather than what the country can do for them. 
 
“Entrepreneurs should do what they can for the country, instead of thinking what the country can do for you,” said Tata. 
 
Tata said that there was great potential in the country where everyone has equal opportunity. 
 
"Late Sayajirao Gaekwad, late JRD Tata and freedom fighters had contributed in development of the country," Tata said.

Mumbai, Jan 28 () Industrialist Ratan Tata on Tuesday warned that start-ups which burn investors' money and disappear will not get a second or a third chance.
 Tata, who also invests in start-ups, also said old-age businesses will recede and the young founders of innovative companies are the future leaders of the Indian industry.
 The comments from Tata come at a time when many start-ups have been blamed for what is termed as "cash burn", wherein the optimism of making money in the future makes venture funds to invest in such companies, and the companies keep incurring losses. At its peak, e-commerce major Flipkart was reportedly burning USD 150 million a month.
 "We will have start-ups which will attract attention, collect money and disappear. Such start-ups will not get a second or a third chance," Tata, who was feted with the lifetime achievement award at the TiECON awards here, said.
 Tata, whose portfolio also consists of e-commerce company Snapdeal, exhorted businesses to conduct themselves ethically and not to be "fly-by-night" operators.
 He said the start-ups require mentoring, advice, networking and also recognition, and welcomed the role played by TiE, an organisation that seeks to promote the start-up ecosystem in India.
 Tata also urged TiE to work as a shadow regulator for ethics and good practices, and ensure that the start-up sector grows in a manner that it should.

In a para¬by ¬para response to the petition filed by investment firms associated with Mistry's family against his removal, Tata Sons — the holding company of the $103 billion salt-¬to-¬steel conglomerate — told the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) that Mistry was removed as Chairman on October 24 last year after "little or no signs of improvement" in his leadership. Seven out of the nine directors of Tata Sons voted for his replacement after <keyword id="2789990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Farida-Khambata">Farida Khambata</keyword> abstained and Mistry was declared ineligible to vote as he was an interest director. "Before the commencement of the board meeting of Tata Sons on October 24, 2016, Ratan N Tata and (director) Nitin Nohria personally spoke to <keyword id="6356895" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cyrus-Mistry">Cyrus Mistry</keyword> and offered Cyrus Mistry an opportunity to resign voluntarily as Executive Chairman. However, Cyrus Mistry refused to do so," Tata Sons said in 204¬page affidavit. Stating that the decision was not taken suddenly or in haste, it said the removal "was the result of a chain of events that led to a growing trust and confidence deficit that had to be addressed without delay". During his four years at the helm, "several disturbing facts" emerged about his leadership including insufficient details and discipline on capital allocation decisions, slow execution on problems, strategic Plan and Business Plan lacking specificity and follow ¬through, no meaningful steps to enter new growth businesses and weak top management team. 
 
For 4 years, the directors of Tata Sons supported Mistry and exercised caution, restraint and patience, according to the affidavit. "It was Mistry himself who invited Ratan Tata to be the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons and in that capacity, Ratan Tata had the right to participate in the meetings of the Board of Directors of Tata Sons," it said. Prior to October 24, 2016, in his capacity as Chairman Emeritus, Tata never attended any board meeting of Tata Sons and used to render advice only if warranted, as a person interested in the welfare of the Tata Group and in most cases, if not all, only when Mistry reached out to him. "Ratan Tata personally advised and counselled Mistry on several matters, when time and again Mistry reached out to Ratan Tata for guidance on business related matters," it said. It said although the Nominations and Remunerations Committee of Tata Sons, in its meeting held on June 28, 2016, made positive comments on Mistry's performance, it also stressed upon "the need for greater clarity on the functioning of the Board of Tata Sons Ltd in relation to the Tata Trusts, as well as its role vis¬a¬vis Group Companies". Further, the Committee "did not sufficiently factor his ability to lead the Tata Group in the future". "It was felt that Mistry's leadership was lacking on numerous fronts and did not match up to his promises made at the time of his selection. The move comes after tipplers gathered in large numbers outside liquor shops at several places in the state last week, defying the physical distancing norms to contain the spread of coronavirus. Under the new system, a person can get a token by registering on the state excise departments portal and then go to the shop to buy liquor, a senior department official said on Monday. Only those who get the token can go to the shop and buy liquor. It will help in preventing long queues of people outside liquor shops. Huge crowds outside shops put a lot of pressure on the state administration to enforce physical distancing, he said. Oxygen concentrators work the same way as oxygen cylinders. It is also a medical device to pump up the oxygen from ambient air. Oxygen concentrators suck air from the environment and remove the unwanted gases like nitrogen, concentrate oxygen and pump it through the pipe of patients, so that they can breathe pure oxygen. Concentrators can supply at least 5-10 litres of oxygen per day. Using oxygen concentrators has some advantages -- they are portable and have a continuous power source; they can work 24x7 and don't need to be replaced or refilled. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to setup an oxygen concentrator at home -- <ol><li>Oxygen concentrators should be placed at least 1-2 feet away from a wall because it needs enough space to circulate the air and tends to get hot upon continuous use.</li><li>Join the humidification bottle if your doctor has prescribed it to you. A humidification bottle is prescribed if the oxygen flow rate is greater than 2-3 litres per minute.</li><li>Connect the oxygen tubing to the humidification bottle or an adaptor. If you’re using a humidification bottle, insert your oxygen tubing into the port on the bottle or if you’re using an oxygen adaptor, attach the tubing to it in the same way. Use distilled water or filtered water only in the humidification bottle. Distilled water is the water which has been through the process of distillation i.e boiling the water and capturing the steam which rises from the water and allows the steam to condense. Whereas in reverse osmosis (RO), the water molecules are allowed to pass through but not the contaminants. </li><li>The concentrator will have an air filter that concentrates clean air, make sure you place that filter before using the machine. It should be washed at least once a week with warm water only and use it after it gets dried.</li><li>Start your oxygen concentrator at least 10-15 minutes prior using it as it takes a little while for the device to concentrate pure oxygen.</li><li>Don’t use extension cord to plug in the concentrator as it requires a lot of power to function and might risk fire as well.</li><li>You will hear the sound of processing once you switch it on. Always make sure to check the light which indicates that the device is working properly.</li><li>Before using it, locate the litre control knob which may be marked with litres per minute (LPM) such as 1, 2, 3. Set the knob to prescribed LPM. However, Bajaj said that the startup is hiring across spectrum — team leaders, directors and other middle management roles. So, the experience may vary for them, according to the seniority level. “The minimum compensation we are considering for entry-level employees is ₹500,000 per annum,” he added. Backed by Nexus Venture Partners and Omidyar Network India, the startup is now eyeing global expansion as the enrollments increase exponentially. The company claims that its US business is growing more than 200% every month. “We have a strong 25-member internal recruitment team, and consultants who are giving us hundreds of profiles.
