From the coming new academic session, more than 300 universities across the country can implement the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (<keyword id="1650316" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fyup" source="Orion">FYUP</keyword>). However, this will not be mandatory as students will have the option to pursue FYUP or three-year undergraduate programme. According to <keyword id="44171" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ugc" source="Orion">UGC</keyword>, students will get a four-year undergraduate 'UG Honours' degree with research specialisation. At present, FYUP has been implemented in about 150 universities across the country from the current session 2023-24. According to UGC Chairman Professor M. Jagadish Kumar, this number will double in the next session. FYUP was implemented by 105 universities across the country at the beginning of the academic session 2023-24. The universities implementing four-year undergraduate courses included 19 central universities, 24 state level universities, 44 deemed universities and 18 private universities. These include Delhi University, Aligarh Muslim University, Jammu Central University, <keyword id="64114" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="visva-bharati-university" source="Orion">Visva Bharati University</keyword>, <keyword id="19309330" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rashtriya-sanskrit-university" source="Orion">Rashtriya Sanskrit University</keyword> and Maulana Azad National Urdu University. Now the number of these universities has increased to 150. Under the framework of FYUP, UGC has provided students the option to pursue a three-year undergraduate degree as well as a four-year Honours degree, following the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP). According to the UGC Chairman, students will be provided with a three-year UG degree on completion of 120 credits and FYUP Honours degree on completion of 160 credits in 4 years. Students wishing to pursue research specialisation will have to undertake a research project in the four-year undergraduate course. With this, they will get an Honours degree along with research specialisation. Experts believe that the new draft of the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) will help students wishing to pursue higher education abroad. The craze among Indian students for studying abroad is increasing year by year. Till November last year, more than 6 lakh Indian students went abroad for higher education, whereas in 2021 this number was 4.44 lakh. As per these figures, Canada, Germany, Australia, United States and Italy are the top 5 countries where more Indian students prefer to study. According to the new draft of UGC, now students will be able to get undergraduate 'Honours' degree only after completing four years instead of three years. UGC says that the draft curriculum and credit framework of FYUP is as per international standards. One advantage of international equality in the level of education is that Indian students will get more opportunities than before for higher education in universities of America and Western countries. However, some academics do not agree with this. Renowned educationist <keyword id="19309331" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cs-kandpal" source="Orion">CS Kandpal</keyword> said, "FYUP will help those students who are interested in getting admission in many famous universities of America. But there is a need to teach such skills in the programme so that employment can be increased. Such skills will also be very helpful for students studying abroad. These skills may include communication, adaptability, foreign language, and self-awareness." "The basic objective was to include more number of students in the three-year programme in the country. FYUP is an extension of the three-year degree programme. Like in schools you go to class, prepare notes and give exams. You get a grade according to your performance in the exam. With this type of education, students are not prepared to pursue graduation as well as career in good universities abroad, because their aim is only to get admission in a foreign university. Institutions which are planning to start FYUP need to think about this," he added.

<ul><li>India will now have three <keyword id="8411238" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="central-sanskrit-universities">central Sanskrit universities</keyword> — <keyword id="2802845" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rashtriya-Sanskrit-Sansthan">Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan</keyword>, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya <keyword id="6390141" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanskrit">Sanskrit</keyword> Vidyapeeth, Delhi, and Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth in Tirupati. </li><li>This is after the Parliament gave a nod to the Central <keyword id="7792758" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanskrit-universities">Sanskrit Universities</keyword> Bill, 2020, which sought to convert the three deemed-to-be universities into central universities. </li><li>The move will promote Sanskrit at a global level and offer integrated courses in humanities, social sciences, and science, thereby preserving Sanskrit and other allied subjects. </li></ul>The Indian government has given central university status to three Sanskrit universities, allowing them to gain international recognition.. Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, Delhi, and Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth in Tirupati received recognition from the government. “Sanskrit language is not only a language but an identity of the great cultural diversity of this country and hence it is known as an unique language. Due to these factors, it has become imperative to promote the study and research in Sanskrit language. Hence, the government proposed to convert these three deemed-to-be universities into Central Sanskrit Universities,” <a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleseDetailm.aspx?PRID=1606638">said</a> the Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank.’ Nishank elaborated that Sanskrit is a unique language in terms of grammar, meaning, pronunciation and accuracy, adding that Devanagari script is also derived from Sanskrit. The Parliament gave a nod to the Central Sanskrit Universities Bill, 2020. The bill had sought the conversion of the three deemed-to-be universities into central universities. The aim is to promote Sanskrit at a global level and offer integrated courses in humanities, social sciences, and science along with it. “These three universities will have more opportunities to spread the knowledge of Sanskrit language not only in India but also across the world in a better way. The world is looking towards Sanskrit language therefore it is being taught not only in Indian colleges and universities but also in top universities across the globe,” he added. As of now, India nearly has <a href="https://theprint.in/india/education/how-modi-govt-plans-to-get-international-recognition-for-indias-sanskrit-universities/379101/">18 Sanskrit universities</a> with over 100 colleges teaching the language. However, none of them had National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditation.  After becoming central universities, they will be able to participate in university rankings — both national and international — such as the <keyword id="3171143" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Institutional-Ranking-Framework">National Institutional Ranking Framework</keyword> (NIRF) and the QS Rankings. The development will<a href="https://prsindia.org/billtrack/central-sanskrit-universities-bill-2019"> allow the universities to create their own courses of study</a> and training programmes, grant degree certificates, distance education and an autonomous status. “The Central University status awarded to these three universities will enhance the status of these universities and will give a boost to postgraduate, doctoral, post-doctoral education and research practices in the field of Sanskrit and Shastraic education. This will pave the way for many people from abroad to learn Sanskrit and Shastraic lore from these prestigious central Sanskrit universities in our country,” the ministry said. India’s 3 central Sanskrit universities hope to spread Shastraic education globally

The Tamil Nadu government will respond to <keyword id="2959488" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-new-national-education-policy">the New National Education Policy</keyword> (NEP) after a <keyword id="3880652" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="detailed-discussion">detailed discussion</keyword> with Chief Minister K Palaniswami on August 3, state school education minister K A Sengottaiyan said on Thursday. However, the ruling AIADMK's ally, the PMK, sought revision of the policy, by removing the "dangerous" aspects in the NEP and incorporating the proactive measures suggested by the 1964 Kothari Commission. Sengottaiyan told reporters in Erode that he would discuss the NEP with the chief minister. "We are awaiting the details... will discuss (the matter) with the chief minister," he said. NDA constituent PMK contended there were many positive aspects in the NEP, and numerous negative aspects as well. PMK youth wing leader <keyword id="6372434" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="anbumani-ramadoss">Anbumani Ramadoss</keyword> said the proposal of students in classes 3, 5 and 8 taking school examinations to be conducted by the appropriate authority was unwarranted. "Conducting exams for students in Class 3, will cause mental stress and specifically affect students coming from rural areas and lead to drop-outs. There should not be any board exams till class 8," the Rajya Sabha member said. As per the NEP, instead of exams being held every year, school students will sit only for three - at Classes 3, 5 and 8. Assessment in other years will shift to a "regular and formative" style that is more "competency-based, promotes learning and development and tests higher-order skills, such as analysis, critical thinking and conceptual clarity". Anbumani Ramadoss pointed out that the proposal on adopting a three-language policy was unacceptable and said though it was stated that the third language would be based on the student's choice, it appeared that only Sanskrit was given priority and it would lead to imposition of the language. The mandatory entrance exams for college and university admissions would affect students from the villages, he said and called for dropping the proposal. The suggestions of the public and his party had not been taken into account, he said but however welcomed the proposal on the medium of instruction. He also welcomed the announcement that 6 per cent of GDP would be spent on education and the proposal to introduce four-year undergraduate degrees with multiple entry and exit options and abolishment of M. Phil programme. Meanwhile, actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam founder <keyword id="6354603" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kamal-haasan">Kamal Haasan</keyword> tweeted, "Glad that Education is getting 6 per cent share of GDP in the new education policy." "The immediate focus and reforms needed are in the Healthcare sector now, which gets only 1 per cent of GDP on an average. This share has to be increased to 7-8 per cent if we want to grow as a healthy nation too," he said. MDMK founder and Rajya Sabha member Vaiko said that the NEP was "against pluralism and federal principles" and called for its review. It tried to give shape to "RSS' long term vision," he alleged. <ul><li>Senior BJP leader and former Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj, passed away on Tuesday (August 6) after a fatal heart attack at the age of 67.</li><li>Swaraj, a firebrand Hindu nationalist in her younger years, changed the face of foreign ministry and was dubbed India's 'supermom' by the Washington Post.</li><li>She will be remembered for breaking the gender-based glass ceiling more than once long before women empowerment became a buzzword in Indian politics.</li></ul>Senior BJP leader and former foreign minister Sushma Swaraj passed away on Tuesday (August 6) at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS). The BJP veteran reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 67. Born on Valentine's Day in 1953, she earned bachelor's degree with majors in Political Science and Sanskrit from the Punjab University. Her father Hardev Sharma was a long-time member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the Hindu nationalist organisation and the ideological parent of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Advocate by profession, Swaraj remained in the saffron fold all her life. She had the trust of former Prime Minister, the late Atal Behari Vajpayee, and held key portfolios including information and broadcasting, telecommunications as well as health and family welfare.
