Referring to the recent general elections, he said it has "once again shown that hundreds of millions of people can vote in a peaceful manner and accept the results of that process." Rosenbaum, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.caltech.edu/about/news/space-solar-power-project-ends-first-in-space-mission-with-successes-and-lessons">said the project</a> had shown them that solar power beamed from space "is still a future prospect" but that it "should be an achievable future."Aetherflux wants to do things differently by using infrared lasers and a modular approach.The science has already been demonstrated; it's just going to be an engineering and economic feat to prove it can be done from space, Bhatt said.To begin with, Aetherflux plans to send a single satellite into orbit by the first quarter of 2026 to demonstrate that solar energy transmission is possible.<h2 id="f76e6857-d783-49d8-94bf-ab950b9759df">The right time to be in space</h2>Though the career jump from finance to the space industry may seem unusual, Bhatt said space has been his "lifelong calling."NASA was a part of Bhatt's childhood. His father moved to the US from India to pursue physics and got a job at NASA's Langley Research Center in the 1990s studying atmospheric sciences.With a bachelor's in physics and a master's in mathematics, both from Stanford, Bhatt thought he'd be a physicist too. Its satellites are purchased readymade from satellite bus provider <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/palmer-luckey-anduril-apex-defense-tech-space-satellite-surveillance-2024-10">Apex</a>, the high-powered lasers it plans to use are commercially available, and it'll be using <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-launch">SpaceX</a> as a launch partner for its 2026 mission."The part that we're building is the actual optical design, the control systems, and the power transmission link, as well as the ground station," said Bhatt.<h2 id="5dda5318-030a-431a-91ff-f205b537a068">The future of Aetherflux</h2>When he spoke with BI, Bhatt had just moved into a lab facility in the Bay Area. With a team of 10 employees, he will begin iterating ground tests, developing the system design, and working with regulators.He's self-funding the project "completely," he told BI. It's the world's largest "retrogressive thaw slump," which is a pit that forms when <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/forty-six-thousand-year-old-worm-found-siberian-permafrost-brought-back-to-life-2023-7">permafrost thaw</a> causes the ground to cave in, creating a landslide as the earth at its edges slumps into the pit.There are thousands of thaw slumps across the Arctic. But the size of the Batagay "crater" has earned it the title of megaslump. "You're talking mostly about frozen dirt underground, which by definition you often can't see unless it's been exposed somehow, like in this megaslump."That makes the Batagay pit a bit of a permafrost celebrity and an omen of what lies ahead.<h2 id="44febbd2-3684-4499-964a-697072151e54">The Batagay megaslump could help decode our planet's future</h2><div type="image" title="red satellite image of a landscape with a mountain next to a giant stingray-shaped pit" height="1081" width="1219" msid="112931992" hostid="261" sizebytes="147342"></div>As permafrost thaws, all the dead plants and animals that have been frozen inside it for centuries start to decompose, belching carbon dioxide and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-map-methane-leaks-world-can-see-2024-2">methane into the atmosphere</a>.Those are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-spacex-carbon-tax-methane-rocket-fuel-2021-10">powerful heat-trapping gases</a>, which cause global temperatures to rise even more, triggering even faster permafrost thaw.This vicious cycle could have dire effects. Permafrost covers 15% of the land in the Northern Hemisphere. In total, it contains twice as much carbon as the atmosphere.One <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ualberta.ca/en/folio/2022/10/thawing-country-of-permafrost-likely-to-emit-as-much-greenhouse-gas-as-a-large-industrial-nation.html">study</a> estimated that permafrost thaw could emit as much planet-warming gases as a large industrial nation by 2100, if industries and countries don't aggressively reign in their own emissions today."There's a lot we don't know about this feedback loop and how it will play out necessarily, but the potential is there for very large changes to the climate system occurring over very, very fast geologic timescales," Michaelides said.In short, permafrost thaw could quickly make <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-residents-moving-leaving-climate-change-refugees-hurricanes-flood-2023-2">the climate crisis</a> much worse. But it's still a mysterious process. Studying extreme sites like the Batagay megaslump can help scientists understand permafrost thaw and peer into the future.In a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0169555X24001338?via%3Dihub">study</a> published in the journal Geomorphology in June, researchers used satellite and drone data to construct 3D models of the megaslump and calculate its expansion over time.They found that about 14 Pyramids of Giza's worth of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.livescience.com/planet-earth/arctic/siberias-gateway-to-the-underworld-is-growing-a-staggering-amount-each-year">ice and permafrost</a> had thawed at Batagay. The crater's volume increases by about one million cubic meters every year."These values are truly impressive," Alexander Kizyakov, the study's lead author and a scientist at Lomonosov Moscow State University, told BI in an email."Our results demonstrate how quickly permafrost degradation occurs," he added.The researchers also calculated that the megaslump releases about 4,000 to 5,000 tons of carbon each year. That's about as much as the annual emissions from 1,700 to 2,100 US homes' energy use.Michaelides said those numbers didn't surprise him, but they can help inform models of future permafrost thaw and emissions."I think there is a lot we can learn from Batagaika, not only in terms of understanding how Batagaika will evolve with time, but also how similar features might develop and evolve over the Arctic," Michaelides said. "Even if they're a tenth or a hundredth the size of Batagaika, the physics is fundamentally the same."

So using ChatGPT to say, "Can you give me some creative prompts to start the meeting?" has been a super fun way to bring energy into these conversations.John Roese: I renovated a 1780 house a couple of years ago, and I embedded a home AI system called <a target="_blank" href="https://www.josh.ai/">Josh</a>, which runs on a server in my basement.It's very privacy-oriented. I have a house that I just talk to or ask a question. I could ask it to close the shades, turn up the air conditioning, or tell me what the weather is. Or, I can say, "Could you explain something about the historical house down the street?"We all know that intrusive and difficult technology is never successful until it becomes invisible. That's what's happening in my world, where I forgot that I have an LLM in my house.Faisal Masud: For me on the personal front, it's been medical issues. A friend of our son recently had an issue. We just took a picture of it, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anthropic-claude-chatbot-google-chatgpt-2023-3">Claude</a> gave an unbelievable diagnosis. Turns out the doctor's review was 100% identical to that diagnosis as well.I was at an outdoor event, got a rash, and did the same thing, just took a picture of it. It's literally having access to the world's encyclopedia at your fingertips.La'Naia Jones: I typically ask general questions and summarizations. I also look at how the LLMs are formulated to include topics such as bias, and how the underlying technology is used, which largely consists of data from the internet.Elaine Zhou: The thing I find most exciting about AI usage is my mom. She's turning 80. She's using it to plan for her Spain trip in November. She asked ChatGPT in Chinese, "How do you spend your time in Spain?" and it spit out all the recommendations for what you should do in Madrid.Cosgrove: How has the role of the CTO and CIO changed in the past 18 months?DeCesare: Historically, we thought of the CTO as leading engineering and the CIO as leading all the technology, the business uses. But we've had all these dynamics coming together, like cloud-based AI, where that line is completely blurred.My team realized this past year how things operate very differently. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-strategy-low-code-development-market-cloud-wars-2021-6">Low code</a> was a promise a few years back, but now it's a necessity. And we are in the phase where we want to move away from costly engineering and toward more automated practices.Things like Retool or Nintex are platforms that allow us to move what would be a software-engineering concern over to an IT-like business-operated capability.These distinctions are going away, and having the whole organization partner and cocreate is really testing people's identities. It's a creative, fun way to challenge people to think differently and out of their comfort zones.Roese: Every industry has technology disruptions that show up every few years. When you think about the speed at which we have to take advantage of these, that's not a typical IT cycle; that is a research and development cycle. So, obviously, we're blurring the lines, not just in terms of who does what work but how that work is done.We have to be able to interface in ways that we didn't before. The question is, how do you get the internal part of a giant company to move faster and behave more like an R&amp;D organization?We've been focused on understanding how our processes are evolving before we AI them. We don't waste a lot of time AI-ing bad processes, which was our biggest strategic risk at our scale. So there's lots of discipline and prioritization, but most importantly, a dramatic blurring of advanced software-development culture and the rest of the company. In the long term, those two have to come closer together to achieve the speed necessary for an AI cycle.Masud: To me, a lot of CIOs, specifically, as the lines blur, are looking at AI for all the purposes that we mentioned earlier but also to have fewer people because AI will solve XYZ problems.I feel like it's the opposite. It's about doing more with what you have versus what you potentially can get rid of. There has been a massive shift in consumer expectations and end-user expectations. If you look at Gen Z, they don't expect to wait five minutes for the computer to boot up. That's just not acceptable. They were born and raised in this generation, they use all the LLMs, and they're expecting a seamless experience.The challenge is going to come in where a lot of orgs are not going to allow you to use publicly available, cloud-sourced LLMs on corporate devices because they want to protect their data. Of course, they need to, but policing that is not going to be anywhere near easy. It's probably never going to happen because people have their own devices. So the quality of what you produce in your organization as a CTO — if you're going to provide models built in-house — better be superstar quality, or no one's using it.Another challenge is that the adoption of things like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-copilot-everyday-ai-companion-paid-subscription-2024-1">Copilot</a> is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pharma-cio-cancelled-microsoft-copilot-ai-tool-2024-7">not as rapid</a> as one would have expected because the end users are used to a lot more, so the corporate user is still behind.Jones: Many of our colleagues have backgrounds in the IT or the defense community. There is nothing that we do singularly within the intelligence community because it's a team effort and a team sport.When talking about the question of the CTO and the CIO and about how it's changed in the last 18 months, I do think that government and public sector have a little bit of a different perspective versus the private sector, partially because within the public sector and more directly within government, the role of the chief information officers is actually listed or written in policy and statute.I think the role of the CIO has become, at least in government, a little more ingrained. We meet with lawyers, civil liberty and privacy experts, policy SMEs, and many others since data is foundational to the intelligence mission.We also do a lot of large-scale procurements and acquisitions with technology companies. We want to ensure that the contracts and the business relationships are fair and equitable as they may serve a government organization or even the nation from a broader national security perspective.Cosgrove: What's the most important North Star priority that you're looking at?DeCesare: It is trying to make something that's either benefiting the customer or driving productivity internally. You've got to have every function thinking of themselves as customers and seeking the solution because it's changing by the month — and unless you're having them actively test and try out new AI products, you're unlikely to find that value.I'll give a recent example: Our whole product team, we've been trying to encourage them to leverage AI to move faster on getting ideas to market and to test in our software product and having them pay attention to the GPT store. The recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.chatprd.ai/">ChatPRD</a> is a way to automate creating the product-requirements documents. It's sort of fascinating how great it can actually get an initial baseline and just having the product manager create some edits, and that is enabling our speed to market for our own features out into the product. Everyone's got to be looking for the solutions and then understanding if it is actually helping them do their job better.Roese: The first and most important questions you have to answer as a company to figure out where to apply this technology are pretty simple: What makes you special? What is the core of your company?At Dell, it's four things: We have a giant at-scale engineering capability, the largest secure supply chain in the world, a global services capability, and the largest enterprise sales force in the world. You take those four things, and anything I do to them that makes them more competitive materially impacts my business. What you'll notice isn't on that list: HR and finance facilities. I could do lots of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dell-workers-layoffs-reaction-ai-restructuring-jobs-tech-2024-8">AI projects</a> there.We are interested in other areas, but in terms of prioritization, where do we land on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-openai-ai-dictionary-help-understand-nvidia-2023-12">our GPUs</a>? What do we run in our data center? Where do we put the resources today? They are in those four areas as a priority. Once you understand that those are high level, then you have to ask if you are actually on a path where if you apply AI, you're going to get to an outcome.Are your processes and people even oriented to be successful when you bring AI into the equation? Each of those needed to go through a level of process re-engineering consideration. If you can't get to a point where your vision of a process re-engineered to solve a strategic problem is executable, your path to production is questionable.Masud: I spent the early part of my career at Amazon, and we were always about the inputs and not the outputs. When you focus on the inputs, the single biggest import in your company is your customer. Everything else, honestly, has to take a back seat.The implementation of any gen-AI or AI capabilities is first a crawl. What are the thorniest issues that the company faces today? If you can't solve those in a rapid fashion with the most basic, easy use cases, then trying to go from crawling to walking is a bit of a mirage because you're assuming you'll have some capability when you haven't even solved the most basic issues.What we should be measuring is how to use AI to prevent those issues from happening. That's the focus area for us at HP, through all sorts of mechanisms that we deploy in anomaly detection and remediations that don't require humans to be out of the loop.Zhou: The hardest part is to determine what is the problem. The No. 1 thing for me is that once you determine that, then, based on the problem, you can have all kinds of metrics and figure out how to measure the successes. The bottom line is to actually solve the problem in a good way.Cosgrove: How do you keep up with the artificial-intelligence space?Jones: It's constant learning. I would say we all deal with that, but the beauty of technology is it's always changing and evolving, and so I think all of us should focus on continuously learning, evolving, and embracing new ideas and not getting stuck in the same way of dealing with the issues that we have.Masud: I have two older kids, 26 and 22. Both of them code, so they are immensely involved in everything from ChatPRD and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/15/arts/design/aaron-ai-whitney.html">Aaron</a>, and I get links every day from my son on what he is building next. I think this rapid transformation of what [<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-taiwan-tsmc-jensen-huang-china-disruption-2024-9">Nvidia CEO</a>] <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-details-ai-infrastructure-roi-goldman-sachs-2024-9">Jensen [Huang]</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/jensen-huang-advises-against-learning-to-code-leave-it-up-to-ai">said</a>: Not a single line of code is going to be written after next year by a developer. Well, let's see. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-swift-returns-on-ai-infrastructure-2024-8">Jensen</a> is somebody I follow. Jensen is somebody I have an unbelievable amount of respect for. This is the GOAT.Zhou: So I love the concept of mom tests. If I can explain to my mom or someone who has absolutely no background in tech and then, in the way that I can explain, she can understand, that means I truly get it. And second, I keep up with my developers and many youngsters and crazy ideas, and they help me keep up and then use AI to help me keep up to date for AI development.DeCesare: I've been most inspired to drive the leverage of AI through the company by finding out how people have applied it. So honestly, with anyone that I'm meeting, whether it's on my team or my colleagues at other companies, I'm asking, "Where have you been applying?" and, "What are you learning?" Because it's the use cases that spark most of the creativity, leading me to a new idea of how we could use it in our company.Roese: Your customers will tell you what the problem is. They don't know what the solution is, but you have to listen to them about what the problem and the pain point is to figure out the solution. I spend a great deal of time out with startups and Silicon Valley companies and anybody in academics, anybody I can talk to, not because any of them have the answer but because they expose patterns. So it's very important to talk to the industry and the innovators to see what they're thinking about, even if they don't know what problem they're solving.

Leaders from the CIA, Dell Technologies, HP, SageCXO, and ezCater share how they keep up with AI development 

An affordable <keyword id="9107118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tuberculosis-testing" source="Orion">tuberculosis testing</keyword> technology that can detect the disease using a patient's sputum for just Rs 35 has been developed by apex medical research body <keyword id="19918794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICMR" source="keywords">ICMR</keyword>'s regional centre in Assam's Dibrugarh. The 'A <keyword id="19986036" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CRISPR" source="keywords">CRISPR</keyword> case-based TB detection system' is light, portable and involves three steps of testing. Over 1,500 samples can be tested in one single run in around two-and-half hours, ICMR sources said. Conventional diagnostic techniques for TB commonly rely on culture, which requires 42 days to confirm as TB negative, microscopy, and nucleic acid-based methods. These are also time-consuming and may require sophisticated equipment. An official said, "<keyword id="19992404" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tuberculosis" source="keywords">Tuberculosis</keyword> (TB) remains a global health challenge, necessitating the development of accurate and rapid diagnostic tools for effective disease management. Current <keyword id="22921102" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="diagnostic-methods" source="keywords">diagnostic methods</keyword> often exhibit limitations in terms of sensitivity, specificity, speed and cost, emphasising the need for innovative approaches". Additionally, some molecular diagnostic methods, while offering improved sensitivity, may lack the desired specificity or face challenges associated with cost and ease of handling. "Considering these problems, the CRISPR-Cas12a-based molecular diagnostic system 'GlowTBPCRKit' coupled with an amplification step (using thermal cycler) and the '<keyword id="22921103" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RapidGlow-device" source="keywords">RapidGlow device</keyword>' provides a promising solution," the official said. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has now invited Expression of Interest (EoI) from eligible organisations, companies, manufacturers for undertaking 'Transfer of Technology' for commercialisation of the 'A CRISPR case-based TB detection system' for the detection of <keyword id="20115212" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mycobacterium-tuberculosis" source="keywords">Mycobacterium tuberculosis</keyword>. The ICMR-RMRCNE institute will provide expert guidance and technical support for the production of 'A CRISPR Cas based TB detection system' in all phases. Such technical oversight by the institute would accelerate the development of the product and its commercialisation. The ICMR would also provide technical support through its team of experienced scientists in study, planning, product development, development of study protocol, results or data analysis, outcome assessment, safety and efficacy assessment, product improvement, etc., if deemed fit upon the mutual understanding between ICMR and collaborative company. The apex health research body through its institutes would provide support and facilitation to conduct the research and development or clinical study of new technology or product in India through its affiliates or institutes, in collaboration with the company and institutions in a professional and mutually agreed upon manner and timelines.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Meta's Reality Labs is exploring all kinds of wearable AI tech, CTO Andrew Bosworth says.</li><li>Its projects include camera earbuds and mixed-reality goggles.</li></ul>The rapid advancement of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/these-are-13-wearable-technology-and-remote-monitoring-startups-2022-9">wearable technology</a> is making it easier to accessorize with incorporate AI. At Meta, chief technology officer <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/startup-life-not-glamorous-like-movies-meta-cto-2024-3#:~:text=Meta's%20chief%20technology%20officer%2C%20Andrew,one%20of%20its%20first%20engineers.">Andrew Bosworth</a> says the company sees few limits on how the technology can be worn on the body."If there's a part of your body that could potentially host a wearable that could do AI, there's a good chance we've had a team run that down," he told Command Line, a tech newsletter.Bosworth oversees Reality Labs, the division of Meta that produces virtual reality and augmented reality hardware and software. Last month, it unveiled <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-orion-quest-vr-headset-wearable-mark-zuckerberg-analysts-explained-2024-9">Orion</a>, its newest pair of augmented reality glasses that let users experience augmented reality with the comfort of (almost) normal-size glasses. Bosworth <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-cto-andrew-bosworth-ar-glasses-2023-12">once described it</a> as "the most advanced piece of technology on the planet in its domain."The division, which has earned a reputation for hemorrhaging money, has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-cuts-spending-reality-labs-meta-report-2024-7">implemented cost-cutting measures</a> in the past year. Its hardware teams have been asked to cut spending by nearly 20% from 2024 into 2026. Over the past year, it's also conducted layoffs, largely targeting middle and senior managers.But the cuts haven't stopped Reality Labs from dabbling in new ideas. Behind the scenes, Reality Labs has many projects, from camera earbuds to mixed reality goggles. "If there's a concept that you could imagine, we either have had or do have somebody building a thing around it," Bosworth told Command Line.Reality Labs uses a step-by-step process to develop products from concept to release, Bosworth said. It begins with a pre-discovery team that prototypes new ideas, which are then reviewed to select a few for further exploration. After prototyping, successful concepts enter the company's product road map, and about half of those make it through final testing to be released to the public.The camera earbuds are in an early stage of development, while a pair of "steampunk" mixed reality goggles have advanced to the product release process, Command Line reported."We definitely don't want to be outflanked by someone who came up with some clever, integrated wearable that we hadn't thought about," Bosworth said.Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

If there's a body part that can wear AI, there's a 'good chance' Meta has tried to develop it, CTO says

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Employment for software developers has dipped from pre-pandemic levels.</li><li>Landing high-paying tech jobs could take longer.</li></ul>You're not going to be able to write a few lines of code to solve this problem.A new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.adpri.org/the-rise-and-fall-of-the-software-developer/">ADP Research Institute</a> report shows employment for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-i-landed-a-tech-job-earning-150000-without-a-degree-2022-3">software developers</a> has declined from January 2018. Data elsewhere show fewer opportunities for people to fill software development and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/landing-job-career-big-tech-interview-amazon-meta-google-apple-2024-5">tech roles</a> after the US labor market is no longer as hot as it was a few years ago."The tech job market has undeniably slowed since the end of 2022, cooling after a few years of rapid hiring during the pandemic recovery," Daniel Zhao, Glassdoor's lead economist, said in a written statement. "Rising <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interest-rate-hikes-cuts-fed-policy-outlook-kashkari-inflation-target-2024-5">interest rates</a>, the end of pandemic-era trends and a slowing economy overall has crimped demand for tech workers.""That being said, employment in the tech sector has fallen less than 2% since its peak in December 2022 and is still 21% higher than March 2020," Zhao said.Nela Richardson, ADP's chief economist, told Business Insider that the software developer isn't "an out-of-date occupation," but it could take longer to land work given it has "become a very efficient occupation" where fewer workers are likely needed."You may not, as a young tech worker in this industry, get recruited straight away out of university or learn straight away from your first job, or that there may have to be a little bit more grinding, a little bit more of a normal labor market in terms of new hires," she said.The change in software developer employment could partly be attributed to changes in consumer spending during the pandemic. "There was a slowdown in software developer hires in 2020, and then we had a couple bounce backs, and I think that's reflective of how the pandemic really spurred this increase into digital service offerings," Richardson said.Job-search platform Indeed has its own running index of job postings for the software development sector. Nick Bunker, economic research director for North America at the Indeed Hiring Lab, told BI, "it's unlikely we'll see levels of demand like we saw in '21, in '22 for software development anytime soon."Still, Bunker said demand for these jobs is healthy, and these are still well-paying gigs. According to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes151252.htm">Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>, the median annual wage for software developers was $132,270."The depressed state of postings for software development jobs could be a possibly cyclical story or short-term story," Bunker said. "Maybe this is just interest rates are still very high, and a lot of employers are looking to be very cautious when it comes to hiring because a lot of those firms overhired in '21, and maybe they're just being very patient now."<h2 id="077ceaa5-2089-4556-9f27-290c963e7db0">Challenges for experienced workers seeking a better-paying gig and for new graduates</h2>Zhao also noted "weak" sentiment in the tech sector and noted this could be because "waves of new graduates have been racing to enter the tech industry over the last decade as tech employers have offered high pay for newly minted software developers."Zhao said, "even for experienced software developers at the top of the market, the issue may not be difficulty finding a job at all, but rather difficulty finding a job that pays as well as their previous one. Swallowing a pay cut is a tough ask for software developers who were earning top dollar just a few years ago."Data from Handshake, a platform where students can look for work, suggests a cooler demand for software developers or engineers."There was a 29% decline in software developer/engineer jobs created" on the Handshake network when comparing the period between June 2023 and May 2024 to the year before, Randy Tarnowski, senior manager of research and education insights at Handshake, said in a statement.Tarnowski said that software engineering roles "received a large share of 2024 computer science graduates' applications," but the share of applications has fallen by a few percentage points from the class of 2023."Instead of software engineering roles, the class of 2024 computer science grads are submitting more of their applications to other roles, including data science and analysts, computer hardware, information security, computer systems engineering, and financial and investment analysts roles," Tarnowski said.For people making job decisions amid the strong but cooler job market, Bunker suggested thinking about long-term prospects instead of simply how demand is looking at the moment.That is, a sector might not be "as flashy" or offer as great of compensation as it had been. A senior executive at Chinese tech firm Tencent previously described the country's emerging AI gold rush <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/chinas-ai-war-hundred-models-heads-shakeout-2023-09-21/">as a "war of a hundred models"</a> in September.Leading the way in this "war" is Baidu, a search engine giant sometimes referred to as "China's Google."The company has released a ChatGPT-rival named "Ernie Bot" which, <a target="_blank" href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/03/chinese-search-giant-launches-ai-chatbot-with-prerecorded-demo/">after a rocky start</a>, it now says has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/12/29/baidu-says-its-chatgpt-rival-ernie-bot-has-more-than-100-million-users.html">over 100 million users</a> and can go <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baidu-chatgpt-rival-ernie-is-as-good-as-gpt-4-2023-10">head-to-head with OpenAI's GPT-4 model</a>.Baidu faces competition from Apple smartphone rivals <a target="_blank" href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/China-tech/Huawei-unveils-latest-AI-model-as-ChatGPT-boom-rolls-on">Huawei</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Caixin/Xiaomi-joins-AI-model-fray-with-upgrade-to-phone-voice-assistant">Xiaomi</a>, who have also invested in their own AI models, and from TikTok owner Bytedance.The latter's AI push has already proven highly controversial.
