<ul class="summary-list"><li>Emma Tucker became The Wall Street Journal's first-ever female editor-in-chief in 2023.</li><li>Her goal is to diversify and grow the paper's subscriber base, and it seems to be working.</li></ul>In a grim news industry, The Wall Street Journal is a rare, consistent bright spot: A big, successful, old-school publication that never needed to figure out a subscription strategy because it was always in the business of selling subscriptions.But the Murdoch family, which owns the Journal, still wanted to shake things up at the paper. So in February 2023 it installed Emma Tucker, who previously ran the UK's Sunday Times for the Murdochs, as the Journal's editor-in-chief. Her mandate: Broaden the paper's appeal and subscriber base.For folks who pay attention to this kind of thing, the results are pretty evident. Headlines are punchier and more clickable, and the paper has made a point of writing stories that break through the noise — like a June 4 story quoting Washington insiders who said <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/joe-biden-age-election-2024-8ee15246">President Joe Biden was "showing signs of slipping.</a>" Weeks later, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-biden-trump-debate-takeaways-2024-6">Biden turned in a disastrous debate performance</a>.Tucker has also restaffed the paper and laid off some staff, which has led to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.npr.org/2024/05/30/nx-s1-4986419/wall-street-journal-layoffs">complaints from some corners of the workforce</a>. Readers seem to like the changes, though: In the last year <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://investors.newscorp.com/static-files/21b859e7-344b-489a-a7c7-c46435e9977a">subscriptions increased by 11%</a>.I talked to Tucker about all of that, along with an update on Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was freed from a Russian jail this summer, in the most recent episode of my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://link.chtbl.com/kafka">Channels</a> podcast. You can read edited excerpts of our conversation below:You were brought in to update the Journal and expand its audience. How do you do that?It starts with thinking really hard every morning, every day, about our audiences and asking ourselves "What does the audience want from us? What can we give them that is useful that adds value to their lives?"Everything flows from that. So we're doing things to make our audiences engaged, rather than thinking about "this is how we do things."I think there has been a tendency in established news brands — who for a long time had it all their own way in terms of owning the news — to do things the way they think they should be done. Rather than truly putting themselves in the shoes of the audience.I assume your predecessors were also thinking about their audience, too. Can you get a little more granular about how your approach is different?There's a tendency for established news organizations to think they have to cover everything. And I think as the news landscape evolves, we're understanding that that's not necessarily the case.So some of what we're thinking about is what do we not do anymore? What's not useful to Wall Street Journal readers?I want to read you an email I got from a Journal subscriber. The subject line is "New style for WSJ???" The email links to a story you ran in June: "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/us-news/law/luxury-real-estate-world-rocked-by-rape-allegations-against-star-broker-db3feb17?st=21bdi1t4c1l0adf&amp;reflink=share_mobilewebshare">Luxury Real Estate World Rocked by Rape Allegations Against Star Brokers</a>".The person who wrote that to me is my father, who is a longtime Journal subscriber. He's around Joe Biden's age. I don't think he's going to leave the Journal. But it seems to me that he represents a class of readers who you want to keep — but at the same time, there's a new audience you're trying to reach. How do you balance those two constituencies?Well, your dad picked a very specific example there. But I have to say that that was fundamentally a real estate story. And we know our subscribers, our readers, they absolutely love stories about real estate.So this was a good example of [telling a story] in a more creative way. One of the interesting things is that — I mean, your dad aside; I hope he doesn't unsubscribe — we find that when we are creative about how we tell stories with new audiences in mind, the existing audiences tend to love it. At the end of the day, it's better storytelling.Are you saying that most readers are not like my dad and that they welcome the new, punchier, headlines and sometimes more salacious story selection?Absolutely. And it's borne out by the numbers. I mean, the amount of time that people spend reading The Wall Street Journal has gone up.I know <a target="_blank" href="https://investors.newscorp.com/static-files/21b859e7-344b-489a-a7c7-c46435e9977a">your subscription numbers are up</a> over the last year: 11% digital, 7% general..Subscription numbers are up. But what I'm interested in is the amount of time that people spend reading us, the number of visits they pay — and crucially, that the churn rate is down. That's a sign that people are less likely to unsubscribe because they're clearly feeling like they're getting what they need from us.I want to ask about another story you ran also in June. This headline was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/joe-biden-age-election-2024-8ee15246">Behind Closed Doors. Biden Shows Signs of Slipping</a>. Obviously, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-biden-trump-debate-takeaways-2024-6">that story was borne out less than a month later, at the debate</a>. At the time, there was a lot of criticism from folks who said, "I don't know about the veracity of this. It's really telling that the only on-the-record quotes you have saying that Biden is slipping are coming from Republicans like Mike Johnson and Kevin McCarthy."I've subsequently seen you say you were vindicated in that story. Have you ever gone back and said, "We were right in aggregate, but maybe we could have presented it a different way? Maybe we could have had more skepticism about who was on the record saying that Joe Biden is slipping."No, not really. I thought the piece was very, very carefully reported. It's always going to be tricky to get people to go on the record for a story like that. The reporters involved were on that story for such a long time. They were extremely rigorous. Our standards editor was all over that story. I felt like we had done the work required to break a story of that nature. And I was satisfied with what we did.Can you describe the pushback you got from the White House as you were reporting that story, and after you published it?Predictably, they weren't happy. I mean, we were inundated.But I felt very confident in the story. I was confident in the reporting. I was confident about the processes we followed. And the fact is it was an important piece of reporting, it was an important piece of journalism, and we were vindicated by it.We weren't the only people saying this. But it was very hard to get that story over the line.Is there an advantage to you being relatively new to the Journal, and being from England, that gives you the freedom to look at something in a different light, or say, "This thing is obvious. How come no one's saying it out loud?"Or would any editor have done the same thing?I think any editor would have done the same thing.But there's always an advantage in fresh eyes. So we have brought new people into the newsroom who've got fresh eyes. And the combination of their fresh eyes with the talent and expertise that we've already got — it's great. It raises the metabolism in the newsroom, and it's exciting.And yeah, I did have totally fresh eyes. So I probably did ask some pretty obvious questions when I got here that probably had people laughing. You have to not be afraid to ask the obvious questions.You mentioned bringing in new people. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2024/05/30/nx-s1-4986419/wall-street-journal-layoffs">You've also let a lot of folks go</a>. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vanityfair.com/news/story/wall-street-journal-emma-tucker">Those firings get covered a lot in mediaworld</a>. One of the complaints is not just that there's cuts — it's that these have been rolling cuts. Are the cuts over now? Are you done restructuring the paper?As I said right at the start, the news industry is in flux. There's no doubt about it. We've got new challenges. We're still dealing with all the challenges of the last 10, 20 years. Now we've got new challenges coming our way in the shape of generative AI.But there are other challenges out there. People are switching off from the news. So newsrooms have to be dynamic, just like their audiences are. What I'm doing is continuing to invest in the newsroom. We've hired a lot of people. We've brought new skills into the newsroom so that we can truly meet the needs of The Wall Street Journal subscribers and future subscribers. We are a dynamic newsroom, just like the landscape we're seeking to navigate.Are you done with that restructuring? Do you think you've moved all the bodies around that you need?I don't think it would be responsible of me to say we're done. I don't know what's coming around the corner, and we have to be nimble. We've done a lot of things already. We're in a good place.I am mindful, though, that needs change and the economy changes. All sorts of things do. So honestly, "I don't know" is the answer.That's a fair answer. How do you keep morale up? How do you keep everyone rowing in the same direction when they have these pretty legitimate concerns?Listen, the people who are on board are so on board. And we've got some incredible, exciting talent in the newsroom, and they really understand what it is we're doing. We are a high-performing newsroom. We want the best journalists working for us. And the people here who are doing great work are loving it.Can you give us an update on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/russia/evan-gershkovich-free-cde745b3">Evan Gershkovich, your reporter who was freed this summer after being unjustly jailed in Russia?</a>He's back. But he's keeping a low profile. He's very much still part of the Journal. He's doing really well. He's taking time now to gather his thoughts, get himself sort of fully back into the world. And he's taking time to write a book as well.When he is writing again for you on a consistent basis, will he be overseas again?We're talking to him about what he does next. It's going to be up to him. He gets to decide. And the one thing I can say with absolute certainty is there is a place for Evan at The Wall Street Journal. He's still a very valued member of our newsroom. He needs time now to sort of rehabilitate, write his book. You may or may not see a byline between now and Christmas. He's doing really well.

'You have to not be afraid to ask the obvious questions': How The Wall Street Journal's editor is remaking the paper

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Five new civil lawsuits alleging sexual assault were filed against Sean "Diddy" Combs on Sunday.</li><li>One accuses Combs of raping a 13-year-old girl at an after-party following the 2000 VMAs.</li></ul>A Texas-based attorney filed five new lawsuits against <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/diddy-case-sean-combs-next-court-date-2024-10">Sean "Diddy" Combs</a> on Sunday.In one of the lawsuits, filed in the Southern District of New York, a woman is accusing the hip-hop mogul of drugging and raping her when she was 13 while at an after-party following the 2000 <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mtv-vma-best-performances-2017-8">MTV Video Music Awards</a>.The anonymous Jane Doe plaintiff from Alabama accuses Combs of raping her at a New York City house party, as two other unnamed celebrities watched. The party took place after the awards show at Radio City Music Hall, the lawsuit says.Those celebrities are only identified in the lawsuit as "Celebrity A" and "Celebrity B."It is unclear why they are not identified in the court papers, and attorneys for the plaintiff did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Business Insider on Monday.Tony Buzbee, the Texas attorney who filed the lawsuits along with co-counsel AVA Law Group and New York local counsel Curis Law, noted in a statement Monday that several other individuals are referenced in the case filings, but are not at this time formally named as defendants.Combs' attorneys have consistently denied any accusations of sexual assault.Combs rose to fame as a rapper and producer in the late 1990s before going on to build a business empire. He went on to become one of the first — and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sean-combs-diddy-business-income-dried-up-ciroc-music-deleon-2024-10">richest — hip-hop moguls of all </a><a target="_blank" href="http://time.In">time.</a>In 1998, he founded <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/macys-covered-up-2008-flagship-store-sex-attack-diddy-lawsuit-2024-10">fashion label Sean Jean</a>, which was bringing in more than $525 million in retail sales by 2010. By 2017, he had reported pretax earnings of $130 million, allowing him to notch the top spot on <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/zackomalleygreenburg/2017/06/12/why-diddy-is-no-1-on-the-2017-celebrity-100-list/">Forbes'</a> list of highest-paid celebrities for the year. At the time, his sprawling business organization — which has since dwindled — was worth as much as $820 million.The lawsuit from Sunday is among many that attorney <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/diddy-lawsuits-celebrities-list">Buzbee recently promised to file against Combs</a> on behalf of 120 accusers.Buzbee's firm has so far filed at least 11 <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/macys-covered-up-2008-flagship-store-sex-attack-diddy-lawsuit-2024-10">civil lawsuits against Combs</a>.Those complaints, all filed on behalf of Jane or John Does, include many identical pages of abuse allegations against Combs, aside from the new paragraphs of the incident-based allegations for each victim.Buzbee said in his statement that he and his team "expect to be filing cases weekly naming Mr. Combs and others as defendants as we continue to gather evidence and prepare the filings."In the complaint filed Sunday stemming from the 2000 VMAs after-party, Jane Doe alleges she was initially held down and raped by "Celebrity A" while Combs and "Celebrity B" — a woman — looked on."After the male celebrity finished, Combs then vaginally raped Plaintiff while the Celebrity A and Celebrity B watched," the lawsuit alleges.The lawsuit alleges Combs then attempted to force the plaintiff to perform oral sex on him, but she instead hit him in the neck, and he stopped.The lawsuit says the plaintiff grabbed her clothes and left the bedroom, "roaming naked through the house looking for the exit as the party continued."Once outside, the lawsuit says Jane Doe put her clothes back on and made her way to a gas station where she called her father and "admitted that she had lied about her whereabouts, and asked him to pick her up."<h2 id="97e7b5b6-aaa0-4f60-ab36-e44c10b28762">A star-studded event</h2>The 2000 VMAs were hosted that year by brothers Marlon and Shawn Wayans. The star-studded event would be most remembered for Tim Commerford, of Rage Against the Machine, climbing scaffolding and refusing to come down after losing an award to Limp Bizkit. Combs attended the awards show that year with Jennifer Lopez, whom he was dating at the time.The lawyers for the Jane Doe plaintiff said in the complaint that the young teen ended up at the party after having a friend drop her off at Radio City Music Hall in the hopes that she could attend."Determined to get into an afterparty, she approached several limousine drivers, attempting to talk her way into the VMAs," the lawsuit says.The lawsuit alleges that she spoke to a limo driver who said he worked for Combs.The lawsuit says the plaintiff was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement before she entered the house party, where she "recognized many celebrities."The plaintiff says her drink was drugged, and when she began feeling "woozy and lightheaded," she went into an empty bedroom to lie down.<h2 id="51653b7e-19e4-47e4-b175-36a28c22982c">Diddy is seeking a gag order</h2>Attorneys for Combs on Monday reused the same statement they gave last week in response to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sean-combs-diddy-new-allegations-lawsuits-2024-10">initial wave of lawsuits</a> filed by Buzbee's firm, saying the complaints were an attempt to "garner publicity.""Mr. Combs and his legal team have full confidence in the facts, their legal defenses, and the integrity of the judicial process," Combs' attorneys said in the statement to BI. "In court, the truth will prevail: that Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted anyone — adult or minor, man or woman."Combs <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sean-diddy-combs-arrested-grand-jury-indictment-2024-9">was indicted last month by a Manhattan grand jury</a> on federal charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation for the purposes of prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty.Since then, the rapper and entrepreneur has been held without bail in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sean-diddy-combs-metropolitan-detention-center-brooklyn-jail-indictment-2024-9">notorious Brooklyn jail</a> pending his scheduled <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sean-diddy-combs-judge-gag-order-trial-date-2024-10">May 5 sex-trafficking trial</a> in Manhattan federal court.The recent onslaught of lawsuits and negative press has not been lost on Combs' defense attorneys in that criminal case.On Sunday, they filed a motion asking the judge overseeing Combs' case for a limited gag order barring all prospective witnesses and their attorneys from talking about their allegations outside the context of a court proceeding.The Combs accusers now coming forward with civil lawsuits are also potential witnesses in his criminal trial, his lawyers said.Federal rules specifically bar such witnesses and their attorneys from making statements outside of court that could taint a jury."As the Court is aware, Mr. Combs has been the target of an unending stream of allegations by prospective witnesses and their counsel in the press," Combs' attorneys wrote to the judge. "These prospective witnesses and their lawyers have made numerous inflammatory extrajudicial statements aimed at assassinating Mr. Combs's character in the press."

His son was Princess Diana's partner, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/princess-diana-and-dodi-fayed-relationship-timeline-2023-11">Dodi Fayed</a>, who died alongside her in a Paris car crash in 1997.After decades of fame and controversy, Al-Fayed died last August aged 94.Now, after years of mounting evidence and speculation, multiple women have come forward to say Al-Fayed sexually assaulted them.Lawyers representing 37 people who said they were sexually abused by Al-Fayed — including former Harrods employees — spoke at a news conference reported by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://news.sky.com/story/mohamed-al-fayed-was-a-monster-enabled-by-harrods-according-to-lawyers-representing-his-alleged-victims-13218203">Sky News</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c1m9r3pl31yt">BBC News.</a>The lawyers said Al-Fayed used "his wealth and power to manipulate and control victims," many of whom were aged between 19 and 24 when they started working for Al-Fayed.Some were as young as 15 and 16, they added.Lawyer Gloria Allred said the allegations against Al-Fayed included serial rape, attempted rape, sexual battery, and sexual abuse of minors.She said there was "something rotten at the core of Harrods," adding that there was an abusive environment "underneath the glitz and glamour."Friday's news conference followed an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cz6x635wpjxo">investigation by the BBC</a> in which 20 former employees of Al-Fayed said he sexually assaulted or raped them."I made it obvious that I didn't want that to happen. I did not give consent. I just wanted it to be over," one unnamed woman, who said Al-Fayed raped her at his apartment in London's upmarket Park Lane, told the broadcaster.Another unnamed woman, who said she was a teenager when the billionaire raped her, told the BBC he was "a monster, a sexual predator with no moral compass whatsoever."She added that employees were viewed as his "playthings" and that he "actively cultivated fear."The BBC's reporting uncovered how Harrods failed to intervene and protect the women who said they had been abused.In an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://response.harrods.com/">online statement,</a> the store, which Al-Fayed sold in 2010, said, "We are utterly appalled by the allegations of abuse perpetrated by Mohamed Al Fayed. We are doing everything we can to fix this," the statement added.The online statement also included a form where current or former employees who had been abused by Al-Fayed could get in touch.Al-Fayed faced some accusations of sexual misconduct while he was still alive.In 2008, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/10/22/alfayed.allegations/index.html?iref=nextin">CNN</a> reported that he denied sexually assaulting a minor when questioned by police.In a 2018 <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.channel4.com/news/new-allegations-of-sexual-assault-against-mohamed-al-fayed-by-three-women-including-15-year-old-employee">Channel 4 News investigation</a>, multiple women said they were sexually harassed and assaulted by Al-Fayed.Al-Fayed owned Harrods for 26 years and later owned Fulham Football Club and the Paris Ritz. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/tylerroush/2024/09/19/harrods-utterly-appalled-by-rape-allegations-against-late-billionaire-mohamed-al-fayed/">According to Forbes</a>, his net worth was around $2 billion when <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mohamed-al-fayed-buried-26-years-after-princess-diana-death-2023-9">he died</a>. He was reportedly buried alongside his son. Princess Diana and her sons Prince William and Prince Harry, famously vacationed on Fayed's yacht in St. Tropez in 1997 — events that were dramatized in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-are-al-fayed-family-the-crown-mohamed-dodi-princess-diana-2022-11">Netflix's "The Crown."</a>

Mohamed Al-Fayed, the late billionaire with links to the royal family, has been accused of sexually abusing multiple women

The <keyword id="19895346" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Calcutta-High-Court" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Calcutta High Court" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Calcutta High Court">Calcutta High Court</keyword> on Thursday directed the <keyword id="19896633" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CBI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="CBI" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="CBI">CBI</keyword> to file a report by September 18 on detestable posts being made on social media regarding the <keyword id="22813393" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rape-murder-victim" source="keywords">rape-murder victim</keyword> of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The body of the on-duty trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the state-run hospital on August 9, triggering nationwide outrage. The CBI is investigating the case from the second week of August on an order of the high court. The petitioner prayed in the PIL that the CBI be directed to investigate the <keyword id="22008077" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyber-offences" source="keywords">cyber offences</keyword> in connection with the "unfortunate and brutal incident." The court asked the Additional Solicitor General Asok Kumar Chakrabarti, representing the central agency, whether it could find a way to block these types of posts. The division bench, presided by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, directed the joint director, CBI, Kolkata, to look into the grievance expressed by the petitioner with regard to the issue of such abominable <keyword id="20074678" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="social-media-posts" source="keywords">social media posts</keyword>. The bench, also comprising Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, directed the CBI joint director or any other competent officer to file a report in this regard by September 18, when the PIL will come up for hearing again along with other petitions relating to the August 9 rape-murder of the doctor. After the order was dictated, Chakrabarti submitted before the court that the CBI does not have any separate wing to investigate such cyber crimes. Maintaining that the state police has a special unit to monitor such matters, he prayed that the <keyword id="20054502" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="West-Bengal-government" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="West Bengal government" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="West Bengal government">West Bengal government</keyword>'s cyber crime branch be also directed to file a separate report. The court said that it would consider the prayer on the next date of hearing.

Calcutta High Court seeks CBI report on nasty social media posts on RG Kar hospital rape-murder victim

<keyword id="20114810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="West-Bengal-chief-minister" source="keywords">West Bengal Chief Minister</keyword> <keyword id="19909056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mamata-Banerjee" source="keywords">Mamata Banerjee</keyword> has written another letter to <keyword id="19898052" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister-Narendra-Modi" source="keywords">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword>, expressing concern over the lack of response to her previous communication regarding the rape and murder of a PG <keyword id="22760814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trainee-doctor" source="keywords">trainee doctor</keyword>. In her letter, dated August 30, Banerjee emphasised the gravity of the situation and urged for prompt central intervention, highlighting the inadequacy of the reply received from the Union Minister of <keyword id="20086338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women-and-Child-Development" source="keywords">Women and Child Development</keyword>. The letter reads, "No reply was received from your end on such a sensitive issue. However, a reply has been received from the Minister of Women and Child Development, Government of India (vide their No. 1/RESC/HMWCD/2024 dated 25th August 2024), which barely addresses the gravity of the issue raised in my letter. I am of the view that the seriousness of the subject and its relevance to society have not been adequately appreciated in this generic reply." The letter was posted on her social media handle, X. In response to Union Minister Annapurna Devi's allegations regarding the state government's failure to implement essential safety measures for women and children, including Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), CM Mamata stated that the state government has approved 10 exclusive POCSO FTSCs, while 88 FTSCs and 62 POCSO-designated Courts are functioning with complete state funding. The letter mentioned, "Moreover, I would also refer to some of the initiatives in this area that our State has already undertaken, which appear to have been overlooked in the reply. Regarding Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), 10 exclusive POCSO Courts have been approved by the State Government. In addition to this, 88 FTSCs and 62 POCSO-designated Courts are functioning throughout the State with complete State funding. Monitoring and disposal of cases are entirely in the hands of the Courts." Highlighting the issue of appointing Presiding Officers in FTSCs, she further stated that this process requires examination and action from the Government of India, which, according to her, needs PM Modi's intervention. "As per Central Government guidelines, only retired Judicial Officers can be posted as Presiding Officers in FTSCs, but the Hon'ble High Court has observed that, in view of the severity of the cases, permanent Judicial Officers need to be appointed. This requires examination at the level of the Government of India and appropriate action thereafter, for which your intervention would be necessary. Moreover, Helpline Nos. 112 and 1098 are functioning satisfactorily in the State. Additionally, Dial 100 is also extensively used in emergency situations," the letter added. Urging for central <keyword id="20082569" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="legislation" source="keywords">legislation</keyword> and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes, the West Bengal CM expressed hope for very considered attention from PM Modi. Mamata Banerjee mentioned in her letter, "I would reiterate and earnestly request that a stringent Central legislation and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes of rape/rape and murder be considered, with a mandatory provision for the disposal of cases within a specific timeframe by the trial authorities. Mamata, in the letter, mentioned that such "sensitive" issues need to be addressed comprehensively through stringent central legislation prescribing exemplary punishment against the perpetrators of such heinous crimes. The Bengal Chief Minister suggested the setting up of "fast-track special courts" to deal with such cases, which require a speedy trial. This development comes after the trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
