In a twist that sounds straight out of a sci-fi thriller, some of the UK's most beloved TV <keyword id="20000183" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="doctors" source="keywords">doctors</keyword> are now finding their faces hijacked by <keyword id="19899640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI" source="keywords">AI</keyword> to hawk dubious products online. According to a startling report by <em>The BMJ</em>, these digital doppelgangers are being used to peddle everything from miracle cures for high blood pressure and diabetes to hemp gummies.<br /><br />The phenomenon, known as deepfaking, uses artificial intelligence to map a real person’s likeness onto another video. The results can be uncannily realistic — so much so that a <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.chb.2023.107917">recent study</a> found up to half of viewers couldn't distinguish <keyword id="19896285" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="deepfakes" source="keywords">deepfakes</keyword> from authentic videos.<br /><br />Some of the <keyword id="22457749" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medical-influencers" source="keywords">medical influencers</keyword> targeted have amassed millions of followers with large spheres of influence, such as Hilary Jones, <keyword id="20264833" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="michael-mosley" source="keywords">Michael Mosley</keyword> and <keyword id="22457750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rangan-chatterjee" source="keywords">Rangan Chatterjee</keyword>. While the study does not mention the following names, another podiatrist and influencer Dana Brems, aka <keyword id="22457751" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="footdocdana" source="Orion">FootDocDana</keyword> on Instagram, had recently expressed concern after deepfakes surfaced of the personality recommending a “ear-cleaning” product.<br />      <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="110567448" title="Fake AI images now contributing to misinformation spread nearly as much as traditionally altered media: Research" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>John Cormack, a retired doctor from Essex, partnered with<em> The BMJ</em> to uncover the extent of this digital deception. “The bottom line is, it's much cheaper to spend your cash on making videos than it is on doing research and coming up with new products and getting them to market in the conventional way,” Cormack explains.<br /><br />The proliferation of fake content featuring familiar faces is an inevitable side effect of our current AI revolution, says Henry Ajder, a deepfake technology expert. “The rapid democratisation of accessible AI tools for voice cloning and avatar generation has transformed the <keyword id="19898489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fraud" source="keywords">fraud</keyword> and impersonation landscape.”<br /><br />The issue has reached such proportions that even the targeted doctors are fighting back. Hilary Jones, for instance, employs a social media specialist to search for and take down <keyword id="20197919" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deepfake-videos" source="keywords">deepfake videos</keyword> misrepresenting his views. “Even if you do, they just pop up the next day under a different name,” Jones laments.<br /><br />Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram where many of these videos have been found, has promised to investigate. "We don't permit content that intentionally deceives or seeks to defraud others, and we're constantly working to improve detection and enforcement," a Meta spokesperson told <em>The BMJ</em>.<br />      <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="110627770" title="How scammers use deepfakes of celebs to steal millions from fans" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Deepfakes prey on people's emotions, notes journalist Chris Stokel-Walker. When a trusted figure endorses a product, viewers are more likely to believe in its efficacy. This emotional manipulation is precisely what makes deepfakes so insidious.<br /><br />Spotting deepfakes has become increasingly challenging as the technology improves. Additionally, the recent tsunami of non-consensual deepfake videos would suggest that they might be having some commercial success, despite being illegal.<br /><br />For those who find their likenesses being used without consent, there seems to be little recourse. However, Stokel-Walker offers some advice: scrutinise the content for telltale signs of fakery, leave a comment questioning its authenticity, use the platform's reporting tools, and report the account responsible for sharing the post.<br /><br />As AI continues to blur the lines between reality and digital deception, it's crucial for users to remain vigilant. Gates has just become a major backer of venture capital firm Aspect Venture's second fund.</p><p>Aspect is an early-stage investor founded in 2014 by two experienced VCs: Jennifer Fonstad (formerly of Draper Fisher Jurvetson) and Theresia Gouw (formerly at <span>Accel). This is their company's second fund and it raised an oversubscribed $181 million.</span></p><p><span>Aspect's first fund raised $150 million and the firm has backed over two dozen startups in a wide-variety of backgrounds, from the consumer world (Birchbox, Grokker, Urbansitter) to enterprise tech (Gusto, Cato Networks, Exabeam). </span><span>One of its companies has also already gone public. Security company ForeScout Technologies <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/27/forescout-technologies-pops-16-in-first-day-of-trading/">had a successful IPO last fall</a>.</span></p><p>Aspect doesn't focus on women-led startups but it definitely says yes to a high percentage of them. About 40% of its portfolio companies have a woman founder, it says, compared to roughly 16% of seed money <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/04/announcing-the-2017-update-to-the-crunchbase-women-in-venture-report/">in the tech industry going to women-led startups.</a></p><p>Fonstad is also a co-founder of <a href="http://www.broadway-angels.com/about/">Broadway Angels</a>, a San Francisco-based network of female angel investors. Aspect and Broadway are examples of how female financiers are working together to get themselves into more deals. The rise of more successful female VCs is sorely needed in Silicon Valley, a counter balance to the decades where the Valley glorified a frat-boy mentality, rife with sexism and sexual harassment. The Valley's mentality has taken its toll. Not only have fewer women entered tech fields, but when they do, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2017/02/28/why-women-leave-the-tech-industry-at-a-45-higher-rate-than-men/#4f6d31e04216">some studies say</a> they leave the industry at a 45% faster rate then men. Gates is also researching the circumstances that have caused women to leave and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/melinda-gates-how-corporate-america-drives-away-women-2017-9">working on a fix.</a></p><p>Gates says she invested in Aspect's fund because of the company's track record in picking winners, as well as its willingness in "backing diverse entrepreneurs whose potential the venture capital industry has long been blind to."</p><p>And she's not alone. Now, the song recognition is done through an app.</p><p>"The way Shazam started off its business model was that after five [SMS] 'tags' you had to pay for it," said Marovac. "Then it moved into lead-generation for MP3s, then it became an affiliate for streaming companies."</p><p>In other words, if you identified a song, then clicked a link inside Shazam to buy the song through iTunes, a cut of your payment would go to Shazam. But that became less profitable when streaming took off.</p><p>Apple once dominated music consumption, when people bought individual MP3 tracks through iTunes. Since the advent of Spotify, it hasn't kept up. Shazam might be a way to drive growth once again.</p><p>"Since Apple has launched Apple Music, it's still a way behind the curve, behind Spotify," said Marovac. "Shazam has 150 million active users a month, and about 300 million to 400 million uniques per year. Adding 5% of Shazam's base would add a maximum of 7.5 million paying users - a nice bump, but also best case scenario.</p><p>For long-time music industry watcher and Midia analyst Mark Mulligan, the deal is more than just generating paying users for Apple Music.</p><h2>Apple really needs data to persuade people to use Apple Music more</h2><p>Customer acquisition is one reason why Apple might have acquired Shazam, Mulligan told Business Insider. It's also likely Shazam will give Apple Music much needed new features that will keep users sticking around for longer, like Spotify's massively successful playlists.</p><p>"Ultimately Apple will have relatively small concerns about how it will be able to acquire customers for Apple Music in the longer term," Mulligan said.</p><p>"In relative terms, it's behind Spotify in terms of playlists and weekly active use," he added. "Those are the metrics it needs to do more to drive. The Shazam dataset will be an important asset."</p><p>When you open the Shazam app and identify a song, you can then stream that song via Apple Music or rivals like Amazon Music and Spotify. That's valuable insight into how people are using other services.</p><p>"It's a window into billions of data points about Shazam's Spotify, Amazon, and Deezer users, there's some value in that," said Mulligan. "It really comes down - how short was the iTunes dataset coming up? If iTunes' data on a decade of user preferences wasn't good enough, then maybe Shazam was necessary."</p><p>Mulligan likened the Shazam acquisition to Spotify's purchase of Echo Nest, which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inside-spotify-and-the-future-of-music-streaming">now informs its massively successful playlists</a>. It's the poor man's version though. "To be frank, if I could choose between Shazam and Echo Nest, I'd pick Echo Nest any day," he said.</p><p>With so competition in music streaming, Shazam is also a signal that Apple is "serious" about music. "Look at Yahoo," said Mulligan. "That should have died off a decade ago, but they kept going by making big acquisitions that made people think Yahoo was serious. It used its increased market cap to then make another overpriced acquisition.
