Night curfew is already in place in four major cities of Gujarat. There has been a significant rise in the number of coronavirus cases, especially in financial capital of the state, Ahmedabad and the Diamond City Surat. Even as the Gujarat High Court made an observation and advised the government to impose a 3-4 day lockdown or curfew on weekends, Tuesday saw the highest spike of positive cases of 3,280, following which the government decided to impose a night time curfew in twenty major cities of Gujarat, apart from the four major cities Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot where night curfew is already effective from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. The government has also banned political or social gatherings till April 30 and reduced the number of guests who can attend a marriage ceremony to hundred from two hundred. Other gatherings have also been limited to a maximum of fifty. Gujarat Chief Minister <keyword id="193875" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Rupani">Vijay Rupani</keyword> chaired a high powered core committee meeting late on Tuesday evening where the decision to impose night curfew was taken. "The High Court gave some suggestions and we have decided on it. Earlier we had imposed a curfew in four major cities of the state. Now we have decided to clamp night curfew in 20 other cities," <keyword id="3447820" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupani">Rupani</keyword> said. In view of the recent spike in <keyword id="8644408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coronavirus-cases">coronavirus cases</keyword>, the <keyword id="6370685" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat-government">Gujarat government</keyword> has decided to extend the night curfew in four major cities of the state, including <keyword id="5065" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ahmedabad">Ahmedabad</keyword>, by another 15 days. The ongoing night curfew in Ahmedabad, <keyword id="6359081" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Surat">Surat</keyword>, <keyword id="6356811" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vadodara">Vadodara</keyword> and <keyword id="6361800" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajkot">Rajkot</keyword>, was to end on February 28. An <keyword id="296448" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="official-statement">official statement</keyword> issued on Friday night said, the government decided to extend the night curfew by another 15 days in view of the recent rise in coronavirus cases in four municipal corporations. This is the fifth extension of the night curfew, which first came into force in November last year after a spurt in COVID-19 cases in these cities post-Diwali. The ongoing night curfew starts at midnight and ends at 6 am. Although the statement about the extended night curfew does not mention the time, the existing schedule is likely to continue. In view of increasing COVID-19 cases, the government has decided to expedite the <keyword id="1002532" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccination-drive">vaccination drive</keyword>, the statement said. The statement was issued followinga meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Friday evening to review the coronavirus situation in <keyword id="6354766" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>. In the first phase of COVID-19 vaccination, out of the total 4.82 lakh health care workers, more than 4.07 lakh (or 84 percent) have been administered the first dose of the vaccine, the statement said. Also, out of the total 5.41 lakh frontline workers, 4. 14 lakh (or 77 percent) have been covered in the drive so far. The second dose of COVID-19 vaccine has been given to 1.23 lakh healthcare workers till now, it said. The health department claimed that Gujarat ranks first in the country in terms of vaccination per million population. The state has so far received 15.70 lakh doses of Covishield, and 4.83 lakh Covaxin. The vaccination drive for senior citizens and those with co-morbidities will begin from March 1 as per the Centre's instructions, it said. Gujarat has so far reported 2,69,031 COVID-19 cases, out of which 2,62,487 patients have recovered. On Friday, it reported 460 new cases. Ahmedabad, Mar 16 () To contain the surge in COVID-19 cases, the Gujarat government on Tuesday decided to increase the night curfew timings in four major cities of the state by two hours. The curfew will now remain in force in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot from 10 pm to 6 am, an official statement said. The curfew timings earlier were from 12 am to 6 am. The decision was taken on Tuesday in the core committee meeting of the coronavirus task-force headed by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. "The state government has decided to impose curfew from 10 pm to 6 am in view of the increasing cases of coronavirus," the government said in the statement. The restrictions will be in place till March 31, it added. The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) on Monday said the next three T20 matches between India and England will be played without any spectators at the Narendra Modi Stadium here in view of rising cases of coronavirus. On Monday, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation also asked eateries, restaurants and malls in eight wards of the city to close down at 10 pm. Gujarat on Monday reported 890 new cases of COVID-19, taking its tally to 2,79,097. Last month, the state was reporting around 200 new cases every day. Gandhinagar, At least five patients died after a <keyword id="28762" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="fire">fire</keyword> broke out in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a Covid designated hospital in <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>'s <keyword id="6361800" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajkot">Rajkot</keyword> on Friday. Twenty seven other coronavirus patients being treated at the hospital were rescued. The cause of the fire is not known yet, but reports say that a short circuit may have led to the fire. The fire broke out in the ICU of the Uday Shivanand Multi speciality hospital around 3 a.m. The Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani ordered a probe into the incident, which has been entrusted to Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Panchayat and Rural Development Department, A.K. Rakesh. Expressing grief over the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to a hospital fire in Rajkot. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate tragedy. Praying for a quick recovery of the injured. The administration is ensuring all possible assistance to the affected." The Chief Minister announced a compensation of 4 lakh each to the kin of the victims.
