<keyword id="6355315" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="elon-musk" source="Orion">Elon Musk</keyword> is set to get fierce competition in the affordable satellite-based internet market as <keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword> on Tuesday announced the biggest rocket deal in the commercial space industry's history, signing a pact with three rocket companies for up to 83 launches under its <keyword id="7504920" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="project-kuiper" source="Orion">Project Kuiper</keyword> internet satellites.<br /><br />The tech giant signed contracts for launches with United Launch Alliance (ULA), Arianespace, and <keyword id="191583" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jeff-bezos" source="Orion">Jeff Bezos</keyword>' Blue Origin. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The first two satellites for Amazon's Project Kuiper internet service were launched on Friday.</li><li>They are the first of more than 3,200 planned satellites set to provide orbital broadband  services.</li></ul><p>Amazon launched its first two satellites into orbit on Friday in a challenge to Elon Musk's Starlink internet service.</p><p>The satellites were prototypes for Project Kuiper, Amazon's $10 billion plan to create a constellation of more than 3,200 satellites within the next six years to provide global broadband internet services.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/innovation-at-amazon/how-kuiper-extends-cell-and-internet-service#:~:text=Amazon%20created%20Project%20Kuiper%2C%20its,underserved%20communities%20around%20the%20world.">company</a> has previously said that the network will serve tens of millions of customers and aims "to help close that digital divide by delivering affordable, high-speed internet service to unserved and underserved communities around the world."</p><p>KuiperSat-1 and KuiperSat-2 were launched from the Atlas V rocket from United Launch Alliance (ULA), which released them into orbit at an altitude of 311 miles (500 km) above Earth, per a statement from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/innovation-at-amazon/amazon-project-kuiper-latest-updates">Amazon</a>.</p><p>The launch <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-delays-project-kuiper-satellite-launch-after-switching-rockets-2022-10">was delayed</a> from late 2022 after changes were made to the rocket-delivery system used to launch the satellites.</p><p>But after a successful launch, the prototype satellites will now be used to test all elements of the Kuiper System ahead of the roll out of the full network.</p><div type="image" title="United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket carrying the first two demonstration satellites for Amazon's Project Kuiper broadband internet constellation stands ready for launch on pad 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on October 5, 2023 in Cape Canaveral, Florida, United States" height="2803" width="4200" msid="104243308" hostid="261" sizebytes="449810"></div><p>"The launch today started a new phase of our Protoflight mission, and there's a long way to go, but it's an exciting milestone all the same," Rajeev Badyal, vice president of technology for Project Kuiper, said in the statement.</p><p>"I'm tremendously grateful to the Project Kuiper team for their dedication in getting us to this point, and to our partners at United Launch Alliance who helped us deploy our first spacecraft ever into orbit," he added.</p><p>Project Kuiper will be in direct competition with Elon Musk's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-starlink-satellites-internet">Starlink </a>broadband network, the most established low-orbit satellite-internet service available.</p><p>More than 4,000 Starlink satellites have been launched into orbit since May 2019, and last month SpaceX <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/Starlink/status/1705695980325323023">announced</a> that more than 2 million customers were using its internet services.</p><p>Satellite internet networks bring faster connectivity to rural communities, bridging the digital gap. </p><p>They have also proven to be highly effective as a fallback when natural or manmade disasters disrupt traditional communications networks.</p><p>Joining Amazon in the satellite internet race are the Canadian satellite operator Telesat and OneWeb, which is owned by the French satellite company Eutelsat and the British government.</p><p>Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider, which was made outside of normal working hours.</p>

ABL president, Dan Piemont, told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/10/12/amazon-changes-kuiper-prototype-satellites-launch-from-abl-to-ula.html">CNBC</a> on Wednesday, that the company finished work on a custom spacecraft for Project Kuiper earlier this year.</p><p>ABL and ULA didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for further comment, which was made outside of standard business hours. </p>

In response to Insider's question about the financial value of the deal, a spokesperson for Project Kuiper said: "Amazon is investing billions of dollars across the three agreements."</p><p>An Amazon executive told the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/86b6844c-c978-4d2b-aeb1-95616bbd0ed4">Financial Times</a> that the company would invest "no less than $10 billion" in the total constellation.</p><p>"This approach reduces risk associated with launch vehicle stand-downs and supports competitive long-term pricing for Amazon, producing cost savings that we can pass on to our customers," Rajeev Badyal, vice president of technology for Project Kuiper at Amazon, said in the statement.</p><p>Project Kuiper aims to provide fast internet from orbiting satellites to tens of millions of people in underserved areas across the world, Dave Limp, senior vice president for Amazon Devices &amp; Services, said in the statement.</p><p>The network plans to rival SpaceX's Starlink, which also aims to connect rural communities to broadband internet using a network of satellites.</p><p>Starlink has already launched <a href="https://planet4589.org/space/stats/star/starstats.html">more than 2,000 satellites</a> and plans to have a constellation of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-elon-musk-42000-starlink-satellites-earth-effects-stars-2020-10">42,000 satellites in total by mid-2027</a>. Amazon has said that the Project Kuiper constellation will eventually comprise 3,236 satellites. </p><p>Satellite internet providers like Project Kuiper, <keyword id="11897866" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="starlink" source="Orion">Starlink</keyword>, and OneWeb aim to provide high-speed internet to places poorly served by current infrastructure. Theoretically, customers can connect to satellite internet from anywhere in the world, making the services especially valuable for remote communities. </p><p>Elon Musk's <keyword id="11908743" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="spacex" source="Orion">SpaceX</keyword> is working on a similar product, Starlink, which is much further along in its development. Some 2,000 Starlink satellites already orbit the Earth and the service has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-beta-signup-satellite-internet-how-many-users-2021-8">thousands of beta testers</a>. SpaceX has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-satellite-internet-deposit-pre-orders-waitlist-customers-2021-5">said</a> that more than 500,000 people have either ordered or placed a deposit for Starlink. </p><p>Musk and Jeff Bezos' rivalry extends to other space ventures as well. The plan is codenamed "Project Kuiper."</p><p>Musk tweeted under MIT Tech Report's story about Project Kuiper, tagging Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and writing "copy" followed by the cat emoji.</p><p>Musk's privately owned space exploration company SpaceX has been working on a similar project. SpaceX's Starlink division got approval from the FCC in November to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spacex-funding-investments-500-million-2018-4?r=US&amp;IR=T">launch a planned 11,943 satellites</a>, with the same goal of providing global high-speed internet. It launched <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-spacecraft-pictures-elon-musk-2018-2?r=US&amp;IR=T">two experimental Starlink satellites in February</a>.</p><p>This week <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/07/amazon-hired-former-spacex-management-for-bezos-satellite-internet.html">CNBC reported</a> that Amazon had hired a former Starlink exec to head up Project Kuiper. In 2015, Bezos tweeted proudly about a rocket launch from his privately-owned space exploration company Blue Origin.</p><p>Specifically, he was pleased because the then-new New Shepard rocket successfully launched then landed again, tweeting: "The rarest of beasts - a used rocket."</p><p>Musk quickly chimed in. "Not quite 'rarest.' SpaceX Grasshopper rocket did 6 suborbital flights 3 years ago &amp; is still around," he said.</p><p>The pair have exchanged pleasantries before. Bezos wished SpaceX the "best of luck" with the Falcon Heavy launch in February last year. Elon Musk just trolled Jeff Bezos on Twitter and it could reignite a years old feud between the billionaires

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Bringing cheap, high-speed internet access to every inch of the Earth would change the world as we know it. And probably anger your internet company.</p><p>In January, entrepreneur <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-space-internet-2015-1">Elon Musk announced</a> that's exactly what he intends to do with his rocket company SpaceX. The idea is to launch 4,000 internet-providing satellites into orbit <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/space-x-is-trying-to-serve-up-internet-service-from-space-2015-6">by 2030</a>.</p><p>Writer Tim Urban sat down with a top SpaceX engineer to learn more about how this game-changing satellite network will work.</p><p>Right now, only the US, Europe, and a few parts of India and Asia have strong and reliable internet service. Most of the rest of the world has limited access or, in remote regions, none at all.</p><p>SpaceX's unnamed project could change everything, according to Rajeev Badyal, the company's vice president of avionics engineering, who spoke with Urban for his blog, <a href="http://waitbutwhy.com/">Wait But Why</a>.</p><p>Once the 4,000-satellite network is in place, Badyal said <strong>all you'd need "is a small, pizza-box shaped receiver, which could be put anywhere outside, and you could have fast internet on the North Pole, the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the top of Mount Everest-anywhere,"</strong> Urban wrote in a post titled "<a href="http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/08/how-and-why-spacex-will-colonize-mars.html/4">How (and Why) SpaceX Will Colonize Mars</a>."</p><p>Of course, building the world's first satellite global internet service won't be easy.</p><p>Right now there's about <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/animated-map-global-fiber-optic-internet-cables-2015-9">550,000 miles of fiber optic cables</a> under our oceans that help connect us to the web. They account for 99% of international communication (satellites only account for 1%). Even though laying one cable takes months and hundreds of millions of dollars, it's <a href="http://www.technologyreview.com/news/534361/why-the-time-seems-right-for-a-space-based-internet-service/">still cheaper than satellite internet</a>. But that could change if satellite technology gets a big push forward from SpaceX.</p><p>These days it costs roughly half a billion dollars to build and launch one satellite into space, according to Urban. Musk wants to launch<em> three times</em> the number of satellites in space right now - so cost has to come down to make the plan viable.</p><p>One big cost is the rocket, since they can only be used once. (After delivering a payload to orbit, rockets fall back to Earth and are destroyed.) Once that's figured out, Musk wants to lower the cost of satellites, presumably by making them smaller and using mass-manufacturing.</p><p>This isn't exactly welcome news to internet providers. A handful of companies have cornered the market because they can afford to lay miles of cables, or pay for expensive satellites and rocket launches, while newer and smaller companies can't. <strong>This high-stakes, low-competition setup is part of the reason we pay so much for internet access, Urban writes, and is also why we're still using the same clunky satellite technology from 25 years ago.</strong></p><p>Musk threatens to shake up the industry with his new plan, and he hasn't been shy about calling out future competitors:</p><p>"In cases where people are stuck with Time Warner or Comcast, this would provide an opportunity to leave," he said during a June announcement, to a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3qcDW3xkg4&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=5m3s">huge response from the crowd</a>.</p><p>A satellite program like the one Musk envisions could cost around $10 billion and take at least five years to set up, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-01-17/elon-musk-and-spacex-plan-a-space-internet#p1">according to reports from earlier this year</a>. Facebook and Virgin Galactic's Richard Branson have also made moves to get in on the satellite internet game, but both of those projects are stalled over concerns about cost.</p><p><strong>Whoever creates the first huge global network of internet satellites, cheap and fast web access would only be the start. </strong>Badyal told Urban you could trick out the satellites with cameras and scientific instruments, helping meteorologists create a live global weather map, for example, or law enforcement officials track down criminals. You could also build a similar satellite network around Mars to get the first Martian colonists online.</p><p>SpaceX still has a lot of work to do if it's going to succeed. For one, it <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/watch-spacex-launch-livestream-2015-4">has yet to figure out</a> the whole reusable rocket thing. It also needs to get the cost well below what it takes to lay fiber-optic cables. Rural areas that aren't connected yet may welcome a satellite internet network, but areas that are already well connected would need a big incentive (lower cost) to switch from fiber optics to satellite.</p><p>But Musk seems confident and committed.
