Raipur, Jun 7 () A 20-year-old migrant worker allegedly committed suicide on Sunday at a quarantine centre in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district where he was kept after he returned from Telangana, police said. Lobo Ram Sari was found hanging in a room at the quarantine centre in his native Ghorapadar village under Deobhog police station limits, some 200 kilometres from Raipur, Gariaband Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sukhnandan Rathore told . "He had returned from Hyderabad last week and was kept at the quarantine facility for 14 days as a precautionary measure. He did not have any coronavirus symptoms. However, his sample has been sent for COVID-19 test as per protocol," he added. A case has been registered and probe is on to find out why he took this step, the official said. Earlier, on May 13, a migrant worker had hanged himself at a quarantine centre in Raigarh, while on May 18, a migrant ended his life similarly at a quarantine facility in Balod. TKP BNM BNM

T20 Cricket: Clinical Northern Knights Send Mumbai Indians Crashing Out

Why is the tournament that will start in earnest in Hyderabad on Wednesday called the Champions League T20 (CLT20) when more than half the competing teams are not the winners of the events that put them there? 
 
Yes, football also propagates this marketing myth. But since when does cricket, which likes to think of itself as the cerebral sport fan's game of choice, take its cues from something designed to deliver 90 minutes of nothing to mobs of yobs? 
 
And who can look past the farce of at least three and perhaps as many as four of the field of 10 sides who play in the CLT20 proper all hailing from the Indian Premier League (IPL)? 
 
The closest we can get to a truthful answer to these questions is to supply it ourselves - the CLT20 would be more honestly named Another Opportunity for IPL Franchises and Selected Others to Make Even More Money (AOIFSOMEMM). 
 
So, stand by for the 2014 edition of the AOIFSOMEMM, the tournament that commonsense forgot. If you live in Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Raipur or Bangalore, it is coming soon to a stadium near you. 
 If you live elsewhere, do not fear - it will be on a television not far away from you as surely as <keyword id="3257" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lalit-Modi">Lalit Modi</keyword>, who styles himself as the "founder and architect of the IPL and CLT20" on his Twitter page, will in the next 10 minutes say something that confirms his arrogance. 
 
At least he will make us laugh when he does so, albeit unintentionally. But which is worse: the fact that some undeserving IPL lot will enjoy his services rather than the team that have nurtured him and his talent to fruition, or the awkward truth that his rightful team are happy to accept the ransom that the IPL side are only too willing to pay to hang onto him? Off with both of their heads. 
 The Cobras are no strangers to success in South <keyword id="12925" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Africa">Africa</keyword> having won or shared 10 trophies in the past 10 seasons. In the inaugural AOIFSOMEMM in 2009, they reached the semi-finals. But to get that far this year they will need all the world class players they can put into a team shirt. 
 
So, good thing they have <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/hashim-amla/8001/8034">Hashim Amla</a>, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/vernon-philander/8001/53012">Vernon Philander</a> and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/dale-steyn/8001/8051">Dale Steyn</a> to call on. Except that they do not have Steyn. 
 
Despite the unfair advantage given to IPL sides, Steyn's team in that tournament, Sunrisers Hyderabad, were not good enough make the AOIFSOMEMM grade. Steyn is not playing because Cricket South Africa (CSA) have told the Cobras to rest him. As his salary is paid by CSA and not the Cobras, the latter have no choice but to comply. 
 Whether CSA would have been quite as keen to tell the <keyword id="6354467" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kolkata-Knight-Riders">Kolkata Knight Riders</keyword> to give <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/morne-morkel/8001/8057">Morne Morkel</a> a break is an interesting question that was made moot when Morkel was ruled out of the AOIFSOMEMM with a shoulder injury.

CLT20 Is The Tournament That Commonsense Forgot

In terms of ambition, the Champions League T20 was to be the perfect tool to showcase, and popularise, franchise cricket. It was modelled on the UEFA Champions League, with clubs from cricketing nations teaming up for a short T20 event. But into its sixth edition, it hasn't delivered on the promise front. The <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> in India is still the benchmark, and the involvement of international teams somehow fails to pique interest among fans who get behind their local franchises (a reason to include a fourth Indian team). From September 13, however, up until October 4, the disappointments of the England tour will be forgotten, and cricket's shortest format will once again drum up the entertainment before the home season in India gets under way. 
 
In many ways, the timeframe set apart for the Champions League is about perfect for a T20 competition. The IPL lasts two months; back-to-back games in the middle of the Indian summer making it an annual TV soap opera. The expectancy of home advantage is less; teams from South Africa, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand make it a more global event, and the chance to see several international players, who could soon be seen being snapped up by several franchises in next year's IPL. The Champions League then is the IPL's poorer cousin, but the unpredictable nature of the competition could make it for interesting viewing. 
 
Chhattisgarh's Raipur International Cricket Stadium will host the six qualifiers featuring Lahore Lions (Pakistan), Mumbai Indians (India), Northern Knights (New Zealand) and Southern Express (Sri Lanka), before the main league kicks off with games scheduled in Hyderabad, Mohali and Bangalore. Perth Scorchers: Like KKR, Perth Scorchers triumphed at the Big Bash League, but like the Indian franchise, they too come into the tournament with a depleted squad. Simon Katich was their leading run-getter but is not available, nor is Shaun Marsh, who was injured. The franchise will rely heavily on <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/mitchell-marsh/1001/27022">Mitchell Marsh</a>, who is coming off a successful trip with the Australian team in Zimbabwe. 
 
Dolphins: Winners of South Africa's domestic T20 competition, Dolphins make their Champions League bow under former South Africa wicketkeeper-batsman Morne van Wyk, who has previously turned out for KKR. With <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/david-miller/8001/8076">David Miller</a> opting to play for Kings XI Punjab, the Dolphins squad will miss the services of their explosive batsman, but <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/kyle-abbott/8001/29036">Kyle Abbott</a>'s presence in the bowling line-up gives them some international quality. 
 
Barbados Tridents: The 2014 Caribbean Premier League champions will be without <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/dwayne-smith/26001/10043">Dwayne Smith</a>, Shoaib Malik and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/kieron-pollard/31001/10060">Kieron Pollard</a> but still have enough quality to surprise bigger teams. Kings XI Punjab: KXIP turned out to be the surprise package of the IPL and despite falling short of a maiden title, turned heads with their all-round performances. Despite an injury to Sandeep Sharma, who was a revelation with the new ball, the KXIP line-up screams quality under the astute leadership of <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/george-bailey/29001/26015">George Bailey</a>. Add to that the explosive batting order comprising <keyword id="7567" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Virender-Sehwag">Virender Sehwag</keyword>, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/glenn-maxwell/29001/36006">Glenn Maxwell</a>, David Miller and Thisara Perera. 
 
Hobart Hurricanes: Bailey's absence from the Hurricanes has given discarded Australian wicketkeeper-batsman <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/tim-paine/1001/1088">Tim Paine</a> a chance to step up. Chennai Super Kings: CSK are out to emulate Mumbai Indians by attempting a second title. Their all-round T20 skill under the Indian captain makes them one of the most feared sides in the competition.

Mumbai Indians: The defending CLT20 champions had to endure a difficult IPL but emerged late to snatch fourth place to earn a shot at a title defence. For majority of the competition, MI suffered by failing to field the right combinations and captain Rohit Sharma's absence means fellow seniors like Kieron Pollard, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/harbhajan-singh/31001/4008">Harbhajan Singh</a> and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/lasith-malinga/31001/9036">Lasith Malinga</a> will have to step up. Star signing Corey Anderson's lack of form was a subject of great debate during the competition, but his game-changing 94 against Rajasthan Royals proved how dangerous the side could be with the big players firing. 
 
Lahore Lions: Pakistan's T20 champions had to endure a difficult passage into India with a visa delay, but on match day, their quality is set to leave an impact on the competition. The absence of Pakistani players from the IPL means the Lions will lend additional charm to the event, and the team is full of quality with six Pakistan internationals – <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ahmed-shehzad/7001/7070">Ahmed Shehzad</a>, Umar Akmal, Nasir Jamshed, Aizaz Cheema, Wahab Riaz and captain Mohammad Hafeez.

Finally the Supreme Court of India stands by the commuters who have to encounter highways dotted with potholes in many parts of India. The experience of travelling on a bad highway is gravely painful. The bench of Justices T S Thakur and Kurian Joseph, while hearing a case of a poorly maintained 26-km Raipur-Durg stretch on NH-53 said, "no toll for bad roads". The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nhai">National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)</a> and concessionaires cannot collect toll from commuters if the road is in bad shape. 
 
Road users have had a long-standing grouse that they were fleeced by concessionaires who charged hefty toll on stretches of dilapidated national highways. They also believed that private contractors were enriching themselves while the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nhai">NHAI looked the other way</a>. 
"General public should not be made to suffer on both counts - bad roads and hefty toll," the bench said while ordering the concessionaire to refund Rs 11 crore it had collected as toll to the central government, which had taken over the road from the private party in March. 
 
The central government wanted defended saying, it had acted reasonably by reducing the toll by 60% since taking over the highway for repair work. But the court refused to allow commuters to pay any charges when the condition of the 26-km stretch was poor. 
 
However, the Centre pleaded that the road is motorable in quite some parts. The bench then approved the collection of toll at 40% of the earlier rate and directed that the new toll would be 20% of the earlier fee. 
Lal Manohar Pandey had filed a petition in Chhattisgarh High Court complaining against the pot-holed 26-km Raipur-Durg stretch, on which the concessionaire extracted hefty toll. The HC order was challenged in the SC by the private contractor.

Three persons have been arrested in this connection - two from Chhattisgarh and one from Delhi - and 779 pre-activated SIM cards were seized from them, Thane Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cybercrime and EOW, Parag Manere told reporters here on Wednesday. The police suspect that around 3,000 SIM cards have been put to use in a similar manner, he said. During a probe into 16 such cases registered in Maharashtra's Thane, the police also got a lead that these crimes were being committed through WhatsApp with the use of 30 mobile phones and nearly 2,600 SIM cards activated from Chhattisgarh, Tripura and other places. Upon verification, it was found that these numbers were activated through a WhatsApp IP in Hong Kong, the official said. While probing a specific case of cheating of Rs 29.3 lakh, the police found some SIM cards and the mobile handsets were being used from Chhattisgarh. On July 5, the police arrested Aftab Irshad Debar (22) and Manishkumar Mohit Deshmukh (27), both from Chhattisgarh, and seized 779 pre-activated SIM cards, a laptop, two Wi-Fi routers, 23 mobile handsets, 50 debit/credit cards and 20 cheque books/passbooks from their possession, the official said. During their interrogation, it came to light that one Bhaijan @ Hafiz Like Ahmed (48), from south Delhi, purchased the SIM cards and sold them to a gang based in Dubai, and cheated people in various cyber crimes. The police subsequently arrested him, he said. The gang members procured the SIM cards from street vendors by fraudulently capturing the biometric fingerprints of customers who came to those shops. The SIM cards were then activated and linked to the bank accounts where the ill-gotten money was transferred, the police said. The associates of the arrested accused operating from Raipur, Bilaspur (in Chhattisgarh) and Delhi supplied the SIM cards to criminals in Cambodia, Dubai China and other countries who used them in cybercrimes there, they said. The arrested persons also informed the police that around 3,000 SIM cards had already been supplied in foreign countries in a similar manner. Further probe indicated that around six bank accounts were linked to these SIM cards, and a mega financial cheating racket was operating, the police said. The police also came across 14 similar cases registered in Rajasthan, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat and Kerala. This information was obtained through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the official said. Search was on for the associates of the arrested accused, the police said. While companies in India and around the world are increasingly demanding their employees to return to offices, it looks like at least some of them have decided to set up offices in their homes. “Working from Home is redefining the priorities as households are shifting into digital offices within their own homes in Tier 3 and Tier 4 districts,” the report by SBI said. The report further adds that this has not only led to the growth in loans being faster in T3 and T4 districts, even the average loan sizes have increased much more when compared to Tier 1 and 2 districts between FY19 and FY22. One of the reasons for the growth in UP, specifically, is the launch of the SVAMITVA scheme by the Indian government wherein rural people are given the right to document their residential properties so that they can use their property for economic purposes. Essentially, this scheme enables rural people to document their properties and then use them for obtaining loans and other financial benefits. The Sachin Tendulkar-backed company — which now refers to its business model as Smaaash 2.0 — has stepped away from its traditional ‘for kids’ offering to reimagine itself as a business that caters to the needs of young adults and working professionals. The aim of the space is to give an entertainment center for adults, but with the same vibe as the local club. Smaaash — which has raised close to ₹700 crore from <keyword id="6354267" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sachin-tendulkar" source="Orion">Sachin Tendulkar</keyword> and Sixth Sense Ventures — announced its closure in September 2020 as the country was facing the worst of COVID-19 throughout the year. The company did not have the runway to continue and there wasn’t enough footfall in the physical store. The company’s founder Shripal Morakhia, in an email to its employees, said he was sorry that despite his best efforts he has failed in his efforts to save the company from its “premature death”. However, Smaaash restarted its operations once again in Raipur and Vijayawada and built on top of that. The company had lost several prime locations it was previously operating in, so it decided to build on its latest network in alternative locations with larger and more open spaces. Shirish Kotmire, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Smaaash, believes that this offers them the opportunity to work in bigger and more open locations, at less the cost. Secondly, the company has also spent the last one year in reading customer behaviour and effectively enhancing the value per customer. The company has expanded virtual reality (VR) offerings by introducing new games and upgrading traditional games to VR as well. Besides, it has also introduced physical games like shooting. This, coupled with dining and beverages options, increases the time spent by the customers in Smaaash stores and the average cost per customer goes up too. The company had dine-in option earlier as well, but it now emphasises reading into customer behaviour and needs. “We are ensuring that we give an entire experience, where they [customers] graduate from playing just games to consuming food and liquor, to consuming time there. When you give them a gaming environment, combined with a food and gaming experience, and the pocket friendly nature, the time of the entire experience increases … We are really good at upselling now. Because it’s a gaming concept no one comes to have food-food,” Kotmire noted. How has Smaaash been strengthening itself? Smaaash started its rebuilding efforts in metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Delhi, and then the letter grew in a conservative manner by focusing on cities that were less likely to face stricter COVID-19 norms. In the second phase it expanded to Raipur, Gwalior, Vijayawada, and Bhubaneswar. The company is now looking to expand with 23 more stores by mid-2022, where the deals are already signed and project-related work has begun. In a must-win match for the defending champions, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/lendl-simmons/31001/10059">Lendl Simmons</a> and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/michael-hussey/31001/1033">Michael Hussey</a> rose to the occasion and after early nerves showed such dominance that the Sri Lankan team had no chance and bowed out with two defeats in as many matches. Simmons and Hussey added 139 for the opening stand to help their team reach the target in 16.2 overs with nine wickets in hand.

Angelo and Maharoof's stand brought the Lankans back into the match before Lasith Malinga, who captained SE to the domestic title in Sri Lanka, cleaned up Angelo for 28 in the last over. Maharoof (41* off 22 balls) got a six and four off the last two balls to finish the innings on a high. 
 
MI made one change to their team that lost to the Lions, bringing in legspinner Shreyas Gopal in place of the injured Praveen Kumar. In the first game of the day at Raipur, New Zealand's Knights secured a thumping 72-run against the Lions to put one foot in the tournament proper.
