US-based banking platform Novo on Friday announced plans to go on a hiring spree to strengthen its existing operations in India. The company will be recruiting 100 engineers by FY 2022 for senior key and support roles including <keyword id="11602752" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="software-backend-frontend">Software, Backend, Frontend</keyword>, Android and DevOps. The hirings would be primarily for the offices in Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad and Bengaluru, besides remote working roles, pan India. Novo had recently secured $40.7 million in a Series A round led by <keyword id="1673278" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Valar-Ventures">Valar Ventures</keyword> and other investors like Crosslink Capital, <keyword id="11602758" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rainfall-ventures">Rainfall Ventures</keyword>, <keyword id="11602753" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="red-sea-ventures">Red Sea Ventures</keyword> and BoxGroup. It will be using these funds to ensure the successful execution and completion of its current hiring objective, and thereby expand its operations footprint in India, the company said. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather, a private forecasting agency, said the monsoon made a "weak onset" over Delhi and only patchy rainfall is predicted in the city over the next three days. He said the monsoon trough, which ran along the foothills of the Himalayas, has now shifted over the central parts of India due to low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal and Gujarat. "After the low-pressure systems dissipate in two to three days, the monsoon trough will again shift towards north, increasing rainfall in the region," he said. The weather department has had a tough time forecasting the advance of monsoon over Delhi this year. After several wayward forecasts, the IMD Monday acknowledged that "such type of failure by numerical models in the prediction of monsoon over the capital is rare and uncommon". The IMD had earlier said monsoon would hit Delhi on June 15, which would have been 12 days early, but the wind system entered a "break" phase. In early June, the <keyword id="6410326" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="met">Met</keyword> office said the conditions will become favourable for the monsoon to advance to Delhi and other parts of northwest India by July 7. Later, it said Delhi will get its first monsoon rains around July 10. The weather department revised the forecast yet again on Saturday, saying the monsoon may reach the capital in the next 24 hours. But it kept the city waiting on Sunday and there was hardly any rainfall on Monday too. According to Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the IMD's regional forecasting centre, the monsoon had reached the capital on July 7 in 2012 and on July 9 in 2006. "In 2002, Delhi received its first monsoon showers on July 19. The city had recorded the most-delayed monsoon arrival on July 26 in 1987," he said. Central Delhi is the most rain-deficient district in the country this monsoon, receiving only 8.5 mm rainfall against the normal of 132 mm since June 1, when the season starts. It has recorded a shortfall of 94 per cent. Overall, Delhi has so far received 67 per cent less rainfall than normal, putting it in the category of "large deficient" states. The Delhi administration on Friday sounded an "alert" as the water level of the Yamuna in the capital rose to 205.22 metres, precariously close to the 'danger mark' of 205.33 metres, as rains continued to pound northwest India, officials said. The irrigation and flood control department has deployed 13 boats in different areas and put 21 others on standby. With Haryana discharging more water into the river from the <keyword id="404626" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hathnikund-Barrage">Hathnikund Barrage</keyword>, the <keyword id="6358992" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Police">Delhi Police</keyword> and the East Delhi district administration have started evacuating people living on the floodplains of the Yamuna in the capital. "These people are being shifted to shelter homes of the city government in the Yamuna Pushta area," an official said. The water level was recorded at 205.22 at the Old Railway Bridge at 8:30 am. It was 203.74 metres at 8:30 pm on Thursday. "The water level was 205.10 metres at 6 am and 205.17 at 7 am," the official said, adding it is likely to rise further. A flood alert is declared when the Yamuna crosses the "warning mark" of 204.50 metres. The situation is being monitored round-the-clock, a district administration official said. The river is in spate because of rains in Delhi and the upper catchment areas, a MeT department official said, adding it may swell further as more rains are predicted in northwest India. The weather department has also issued an "orange alert" for moderate rains in Delhi-NCR for the third day on the trot on Friday. According to the Delhi flood control room, the discharge rate at the Hathnikund Barrage peaked to 1.60 lakh cusecs on Tuesday afternoon, the highest this year so far. The water discharged from the barrage normally takes two-three days to reach the capital. Haryana had been releasing water from the Yumananagr-located barrage at the rate of 19,056 cusecs at 8 am. The flow rate was 25,839 cusecs at 8 pm on Thursday. Normally, the flow rate at the Hathnikund barrage is 352 <keyword id="6659875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cusec">cusec</keyword>, but the discharge is increased after heavy rainfall in catchment areas. One cusec is equivalent to 28.32 litres per second. In 2019, the flow rate had peaked to 8.28 <keyword id="11720268" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="lakh-cusec">lakh cusec</keyword> on August 18-19, and the water level of the Yamuna had hit the 206.60 metre-mark, breaching the danger mark of 205.33 metres. The Delhi government had to launch evacuation and relief operations after the overflowing river submerged many low-lying areas. In 1978, the river had swelled to the all-time record water level of 207.49 metres. In 2013, it had risen to 207.32 metres. District administration begins evacuating people living near Yamuna as water level reaches 'danger mark'

New Delhi, Nov 12 (IANS) The Ministry of Earth Sciences on Thursday claimed that the level of PM2.5, a deadly pollutant, is likely to be lowest in the past four years under zero-firecracker scenarios during Diwali. On November 9, the National Green Tribunal had imposed a blanket ban on sale or use of all kinds of firecrackers in the National Capital Region till November 30. The direction also applies to cities and towns where air quality during November fell to 'poor' and above categories. In 2019, however, even though the Delhi Government had organized four days of laser shows to convince the residents to choose life over firecrackers, the morning after Diwali, the city's air quality had turned worse than 2018. With the spike in air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has ordered closing of hot mix plants and stone crushers till November 17 and also asked Punjab and Haryana to take stringent actions to curb stubble burning. Meanwhile, Delhi's air quality index stood at 318 micrograms per cubic meter at noon, as against 476 on Tuesday. "Thanks to the winds from East, Delhi pollution has reduced. The AQI of most places is now less than 400. Many areas are less than 300," said Mahesh Palawat, from private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather. He added, "Easterly winds are blocking the smoke from stubble burning. Waiting for rain on November 15," said Palawat. The improvement of air quality will be short lived. According to the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, under the aegis of the ministry, the air quality is likely to deteriorate marginally at night. It may deteriorate further but remain in a very poor category on November 13 and 14, the day Diwali will be celebrated. "Under zero firecracker scenarios, the level of PM2.5 is likely to be the lowest in the past four years as not so calm surface winds in Delhi will help in dispersion," the ministry said. However, stubble burning-induced impact on AQI is expected to increase from negligible to moderate for the next two days. There will be a spike in PM2.5 in the wee hours of November 15 due to fire-related emissions, it added. "The biomass plume transport-level winds are now north-westerly and will have high potential to transport biomass plume in the next three days but the expected moderate surface winds in Delhi will not allow rapid accumulation of pollutants for a longer period." The ministry further stated, "The moderate easterly boundary layer winds are likely on 15th and 16th November. Isolated rainfall under the influence of fresh western disturbance by 16th November is also expected." These two factors will help in flushing out the impact of any additional emissions and biomass related impact to make AQI in the lower end of very poor by late November 16. --IANS aka/dpb

Ridge and Lodhi Road weather stations had recorded 86 mm and 81.2 mm rainfall, respectively.Rainfall below 15 mm is considered light, between 15 mm and 64.5 mm is moderate, and above 64.5 mm is heavy, according to the IMD. Palam and Lodhi Road weather stations have recorded 38 and 49 per cent less rains in July. Srivastava said the fresh spell of rains will reduce the deficit to some extent. The weather office further added that a light to moderate hailstorm is likely at isolated places over Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh and north Rajasthan on January 23 and 24.
