Chennai, The <keyword id="11951117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vellore" source="Orion">Vellore</keyword> district administration in Tamil Nadu has suspended classes 1-5 in all schools of the district owing to heavy rains. <keyword id="185678" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="water-logging" source="Orion">Water logging</keyword> is witnessed at Konavattam in Chennai- Bengaluru highway. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has announced heavy <keyword id="13195" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rain" source="Orion">rain</keyword>s in six districts of Tamil Nadu. The sudden rain is due to the change in westerly winds, as per the weather department . Rains are likely to lash Vellore, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Ranipet for a short duration. The RMC, in its statement, also said that there will be heavy rains in nine districts of the state on Thursday. Puducherry and Karaikkal will also receive heavy rains. Chennai city is receiving heavy rains as of now. Kumarasamy, a vegetable vendor in Porur market while speaking to IANS said, "Heavy rains have been lashing these areas since today morning and we expect the rains to continue for the whole day as the sky is cloudy and sun has not come out."

Vellore district declares holiday for students of Classes 1 to 5

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], December 5 (ANI): The Chennai Meteorological Centre forecast moderate rainfall, light thunderstorms and lightning in ten districts of Tamil Nadu for Tuesday morning. "Light thunderstorm and lightning with moderate rain are very likely over Chennai, Tiruvallur, <keyword id="747320" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chengalpattu" source="Orion">Chengalpattu</keyword>, <keyword id="6356822" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kancheepuram" source="Orion">Kancheepuram</keyword>, <keyword id="257016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ranipet" source="Orion">Ranipet</keyword> and <keyword id="19716594" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vellore-districts" source="Orion">Vellore districts</keyword> of Tamil Nadu. It is also very likely over isolated places in Tirupattur, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Kanyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu," the Regional Centre stated in a release. Cyclone Michaung, which lay centred over the west coast of the Bay of Bengal, off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts, is likely to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam on Tuesday morning in the form of a severe cyclonic storm, the weather department informed. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin made inquiries on Monday on the damage wrought by the heavy showers amid the approaching cyclone while also taking stock of the ongoing relief and rescue operations and the state's preparedness to deal with the immediate aftermath of the storm. The CM also inquired about the food and other facilities provided to civilians sheltered in relief camps during a phone call to state ministers Sekar Babu, KN Nehru, and EV Velu and DMK MLAs Dr Ezhilan, Karunanidhi, E Parandaman and S Arvind Ramesh. The progress of the cyclone is being tracked closely and its potential impact assessed, police said on Monday, adding that the approaching storm has already claimed five lives and injured one in separate incidents across Chennai. Several trees lay uprooted as strong winds swept the state and the daily lives of locals were impacted as they had to grapple with extensive waterlogging and allied woes in the southern state. The IMD earlier warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday in north-coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Light to moderate rainfall at most places and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, with extremely heavy falls at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, is expected on December 4 and 5, the agency informed earlier. Public life was severely affected in Chennai as heavy rains lashed several parts of the city. Several areas, including Wallajah Road, Mount Road, Anna Salai, Chepauk, outside Omandurar government multispecialty hospital and other low-lying areas, were inundated due to persistent heavy rainfall. Chennai's popular Marina Beach was flooded in the wake of the downpours, while roads linking Mount Road to Marina Beach were blocked due to severe waterlogging. The state government advised people to take precautionary measures as the IMD issued a red alert for the state, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai and neighbouring areas. Meanwhile, heavy rain is likely to lash <keyword id="243513" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kanniyakumari" source="Orion">Kanniyakumari</keyword>, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Theni, Erode, Nilgiris, Dharmapuri, and Salem districts. The IMD said that a cyclonic circulation over Tamil Nadu is the reason for the widespread rain in the state. Winds at a speed of 40-50 kph are likely to prevail over the Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar, South Tamil Nadu coast, and South West Bay of Bengal. On Tuesday, heavy to very heavy rains are likely to occur at isolated places over Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Nilgiris, Salem, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, <keyword id="166382" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tiruchirapalli" source="Orion">Tiruchirapalli</keyword> districts. Heavy rain is also likely in Virudhunagar, Theni, Dindigul, Namakkal, Vellore, Krishnagiri, and Ariyalur. The IMD has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea. Farmers are also worried as heavy rains would destroy the Kuruvai crops in the delta districts of <keyword id="259057" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tiruvarur" source="Orion">Tiruvarur</keyword> and Thanjavur. However moderate rains are good for Kuruvai crops. Heavy rain in the past two days have led to water logging in <keyword id="6361828" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="coimbatore" source="Orion">Coimbatore</keyword> and Madurai. Sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy in Chennai with temperatures ranging from 27 degrees to 35 degrees Celsius.

IMD predicts rain in Tamil Nadu from Monday till Thursday

<keyword id="12864" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chennai">Chennai</keyword>, Nov 25 Gusty winds and rains lashed parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday leaving several areas inundated and authorities have housed over one lakh people in shelters as severe cyclone '<keyword id="10317634" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="nivar">Nivar</keyword>' hurtled towards the coast. 'Nivar would intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm and it is likely to cross the coast between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry before dawn on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said. With rains drenching parts of the state, authorities have evacuated over one lakh people and housed them in shelters besides disconnecting power supply in vulnerable areas as a precautionary measure. While <keyword id="4430550" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chief-Minister-K-Palaniswami">Chief Minister K Palaniswami</keyword> declared Thursday a public holiday for 13 districts, a <keyword id="6473907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-order">government order</keyword> included three more districts considering the safety of people in view of the cyclone. Revenue Minister <keyword id="6435760" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="r-b-udhayakumar">R B Udhayakumar</keyword> said 1,03,291 people including children have been housed in 1,000 relief centres. Food, water and all other essentials including masks to help prevent coronavirus have been made available to them in the relief centres, he said. A senior official said subsequently, the number has increased to 1,21,152. According to the government, these people have been housed in shelters at Ariyalur, Chengelpet, Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Ranipet, Thanjavur, Tiruvannamalai, Tiruvarur, and Villupuram districts. As a precautionary measure, electricity distribution was stopped to consumers in several regions falling under such districts and especially areas that have overhead power transmission lines witnessed power cut since noon. Civic authorities meanwhile removed banners and hoardings in several districts including Chennai and Vellore expecting squally winds. Police personnel placed barricades in arterial roads and important intersections in coastal districts to bar movement of vehicles and the government appealed to the people to stay indoors. Chennai airport authorities said Aircraft operations at the airport will remain suspended from 7pm of November 25 till 7am of November 26. The decision was taken considering the safety aspect of passengers and the severity of the approaching cyclone, they said. Southern Railway said eight trains including the Danapur - KSR Bengaluru Special were diverted skipping Chennai and 10 trains including the Chennai Central-Coimbatore Special were cancelled. The Chennai Metro Rail, which operated minimum services, said operations would end by 8 pm and services would resume tomorrow depending on the weather. In its latest bulletin, the IMD said Nivar would cross over betwen Karaikal and Mamallapuram "during the midnight of November 25 and early hours of 26 November." The storm, 250 km off Chennai and 190 km and 180 km from Puducherry and Cuddalore respectively, is very likely to move northwestwards and cross coasts as a "very severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph." Under the influence of the cyclone, coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kariakal regions are likely to receive rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy showers at a few places and extremely heavy rains at isolated places. South coastal Andhra Pradesh is also likely to witness showers at most places today. Rainfall is expected to continue in many places in these regions on Thursday too with heavy rainfall at some places. Surplus water was released from Chembarambakkam lake, one of the key drinking water sources to the city, since it almost neared its full level, the government said. PWD officials said 1000 cusecs was released from the lake as the level stood at 22 feet of the total 24 feet. Chennai and its suburbs, which received heavy overnight rains, continued to witness intermittent showers coupled with strong winds with low-lying areas getting inundated and water entering houses in such localities. The government said it has nominated IAS official V Arun Roy to oversee relief activities in Chengelpet district. Civic body officials said stagnant water was pumped out by deploying heavy duty motors and fallen trees were being removed immediately. Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Chengelpet, Tiruvallur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Nagapattinam are the districts where the holiday is applicable tomorrow and Wednesday has already been declared a holiday.

Cyclone Nivar likely to cross coast tonight, TN CM declares one more day holiday

<keyword id="10334003" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="chennai/puducherry">Chennai/Puducherry</keyword>, The very severe cyclonic storm Nivar, crossed <keyword id="4649351" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-tamil-nadu">the Tamil Nadu</keyword> and Puducherry coast late night and early Thursday morning with an estimated wind speed of 120-130 kmph, said <keyword id="3573341" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-India-Meteorological-Department">the India Meteorological Department</keyword> (IMD). On its way the cyclone uprooted several trees and power lines in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore, Marakkanam and in Puducherry. Power supply in several areas was disrupted. The concerned administration was removing the fallen trees. In Puducherry also the power supply was disrupted. Puducherry Chief Minister V.Narayanasamy told a news channel that power supply will be restored in a phased manner on Thursday itself. He said, a lot of trees have fallen due to the cyclone and rain in continuing. Narayanasamy said low lying areas were inundated and work was on to drain the water. Fallen trees were being removed. "Power supply was disrupted and it will be soon restored in a phased manner in 12 hours", he said. As regards the cyclone damage to lives and property, Narayanasamy said the assessment will be made and by this afternoon, an estimate of damage will be known. He said 80 relief camps have been set up in Puducherry. Camps have also been set up in Karaikal. Narayanasamy said, "By Gods grace people of Puducherry escaped the fury of Nivar." He also inspected the cyclone damaged areas and urged the people to stay indoors and fishermen not to venture into the seas. In Tamil Nadu's Villupuram district, police said the fallen trees have been removed to ease the flow of traffic. Similarly, the officials of power utility were also on the job to restore power supply wherever it got disrupted due to the cyclone. At Marakkanam near Puducherry, several power poles fell down and the fishermen community requested the Tamil Nadu government to restore the power lines at the earliest. According to the weather department the cyclone lays centered over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry about 25km north of Puducherry with wind blowing at a speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph. In the suburbs of Tamil Nadu capital Chennai, water got logged due to rains affecting the residents as well as traffic flow. Nivar will move northwest wards and weaken further into a cyclonic storm during the next three hours, the IMD said. The cyclone began its landfall on Wednesday night about 10.30 p.m. after moving at a speed of 16 kmph for six hours. In an early morning tweet, Puducherry's Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi said: "Good #MorningNutrition. Puducherry has faced the Cyclone, collectively and resolutely. Making us a stronger and a more experienced team." Even after landfall, the cyclone was likely to maintain its intensity for about six hours and weaken gradually. The sea along the coast was very rough with huge waves were hitting the shores. IMD said, "Under its influence rainfall at most/many places with heavy to very heavy fall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls are likely to occur over Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupattur, Vellore districts of Tamil Nadu and Chittoor, Kurnool, Prakasam and Cuddappa districts of Andhra Pradesh. Gale wind speed reaching 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph very likely to prevail over interior districts (Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupattur, Vellore) of Tamil Nadu and Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh in the early morning to forenoon, the weather department said. The Puducherry government too has announced Thursday as a public holiday. Twenty five teams from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed on the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh.
