<ul><li>The railways have installed Artificial Intelligence-enabled high definition CCTV cameras in 16 base kitchens that will monitor proceedings in real-time.</li><li>Eight high definition cameras have been installed in each of these kitchens. </li><li>The AI-enabled cameras will be able to detect anomalies like the presence of rodents and roaches or even whether the staff are wearing the required uniform. </li></ul> In July last year, a Comptroller and Auditor General audit report stated that the food served by the Indian railways was “unsuitable” for human consumption. This led the railways to co-develop a hi-tech system that will help in ensuring that food is cooked hygienically. While the Indian railways is no stranger to criticism, it does get an ‘E’ for effort, especially for at least attempting to save face by installing Artificial Intelligence-enabled high definition CCTV cameras in 16 base kitchens that will monitor proceedings in real-time. The system is configured to detect any action that breaks basic hygiene requirements and if it does detect anything out of the ordinary, it will immediately raise a ‘red flag’. The technology has been developed in association with a New Delhi-based firm called <keyword id="6508706" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="WOBOT">WOBOT</keyword>. Eight high definition cameras have been installed in each of these kitchens and the feed will be sent directly to the to a kitchen surveillance control room set up at the <keyword id="65866" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IRCTC">IRCTC</keyword>’s (Indian Railway Catering &amp; Tourism Corporation) headquarters in Delhi. The AI-enabled cameras will be able to detect anomalies like the presence of rodents and roaches or even whether the staff are wearing the required uniform. All this information will be relayed to the central control room. Apart from that, the system will also allow the central control room to make announcements to the base kitchens. An IRCTC official told <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/india/now-ai-technology-to-ensure-hygenic-food-on-trains-heres-how-it-works-5167629/" data-type="tilCustomLink">The Indian Express</a>, “To begin with, 16 base kitchens of IRCTC have been installed with high definition cameras connected to huge monitors for AI vision detection. Live streaming of 16 base kitchens will be done. Suppose a chef or any kitchen supervisor is not wearing the uniform, including the mandatory cap, the AI system will track that and automatically raise a report to the concerned contractor immediately. If the matter is not addressed within a certain time, it will further be reported to IRCTC authorities in charge.” In future, the railways intend to expand the number of kitchens it monitors.

Goyal in Rajya Sabha(Eds: Updating with minister's response) New Delhi, Mar 17 () There is no plan to privatiseIndian Railways as it belongs to the people of the country,Railways Minister Piyush Goyal asserted in Rajya Sabha onTuesday after some members raised concerns over it.Replying to a discussion on the working of the Ministryof Railways, Goyal announced an investment of Rs 50 lakh crorein the national transporter over the next 12 years."I want to make it crystal clear that there is no planor proposal to privatise Indian Railways, it will not happen.Indian Railways belongs to the people of this country, it willremain so," Goyal said.Keeping in mind development of the railways, thegovernment may, however, bring in a few services under privatesector in order to provide better services to the passengers,he added.Participating in the discussion, several Rajya Sabhamembers raised concerns over the poor financial health of therailways, decline in job opportunities and delay in executionof major projects, besides privatisation of the nationaltransporter.Goyal said the government was committed to making IndianRailways world class in every aspect."In the next 12 years we are going to invest Rs 50 lakhcrore in the Indian Railways. We will do it in publicprivate partnership. We will also give the chance to thepeople of this country to be part of this process," he added.Goyal, in reply to allegations by Trinamool Congressmember Derek O'Brien, said that sharing of funds between theCentre and state governments for new railway projects wasstarted during the UPA regime of which the Trinamool Congresswas a part, and it was inherited by the BJP as a legacy.The minister, however, added it was "not a bad practice".Goyal cited various news reports on the performance ofthe railways under former Railway Minister and TrinamoolCongress chief Mamata Bannerjee. "I don't want to politicisethe issue of losses," he added. O'Brien had alleged step-motherly treatment to statesgoverned by parties other than the BJP, particularly WestBengal.Responding to complaints of delay in work, Goyal saidthat over the last five years the government has taken stepsto speed up various projects."In 2014-15 the capex (capital expenditure) for theIndian Railways stood at Rs 58,000 crore. This year Rs 1.61lakh crore capex is going to happen. This investment has ledto unprecedented work," the minister noted.Elaborating on the achievements of the government, hesaid that barring a few in Rajasthan, unmanned level crossingshave ceased to exist on the board gauge network across thecountry.On electrification of tracks, he said that out ofstated target to convert 6,000 kms last year, the governmenthas been able to complete 5,276 kms.In 2013-14, the length of electrified tracks in thecountry stood at of just 610 kms, he noted."Looking at the dedication of the railways employees, Ihave confidence that we will be able to achieve the target offull electrification by 2023-24," Goyal said.He said that the government has identified 58 projectsas "super critical" and 68 projects as "critical" and therailways is working to complete them on priority.He said that if the government gets support from thestate governments in terms of land acquisition, investment,the projects could be implemented with greater speed.Commenting specifically on West Bengal, he said therewere issues of land encroachment in the state which have hadimpact on various projects.Earlier participating in the debate, Minister of Stateof Railways Suresh Angadi said there were encroachments onboth sides of tracks in West Bengal.He said that during the protests against the amendedcitizenship law, maximum damage to railways property tookplace in the state.Citing the example of Kerala, Goyal sought help fromthe members to speed up projects across the country."Help us get land, if we get land and the stategovernment's share of investment, we will be able to fast-track the projects," he said.He said the Katra-Banihal rail line in Jammu andKashmir would be completed by August 2022.Citing other achievements, Goyal said the Rai Barelirail coach factory would roll out a record 2,000 coaches thisyear.He added that the Indian Railways has traced problem ofwater-logging in 2,044 underpasses, out of the total 8,519 inthe country."We have solved the issue in 715 of the underpasses sofar and the rest would be rectified in the next few months,"Goyal said.He said that about 99.5 per cent work on bio-toilets wascomplete and the rest would be completed soon.Goyal said that in order to achieve zero carbonemissions, the Indian Railways plans to generate 20,000 megawatt of electricity through solar infrastructure, helping itmeet its entire supply requirement.Earlier, leader of opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad soughtqueries regarding the work on various railways projects inJammu and Kashmir.Participating in a discussion on the working of theMinistry of Railways, several members referred to the largenumber of vacancies in the railways and said these should befilled up, thereby providing job opportunities to the younggeneration.Binoy Viswam of the CPI said the railways has aroundthree lakh vacancies and these should be filled up.Opposing privatisation of trains and stations, he saidthe national transporter has "forgotten its social aspect andsocial commitment".V Vijayasai Reddy of the YSRCP said the railways now hasan operating ratio of 98.4 per cent, which is the worst inlast 10 years.Moreover, the railways' revenue surplus is also fallingand suggested that "priority should be given to augmentationof its internal resources."He also said that fatality due to accidents has declinedthis year and hygiene at railway station has improved.Sanjay Singh of the AAP said that employmentopportunities are being ignored by the railways. The <keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword> has received a lot of flak not only from passengers but also from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) that lashed out at it for failing to meet the <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/now-cag-criticises-indian-railways-over-dirty-linen-blankets-and-pillows/story-g9UMcL4c4qll5PwYrpbwbJ.html">basic hygiene standards</a> and highlighted critical safety <a href="http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/report-after-andheri-rob-collapse-audit-reports-of-overbridges-come-into-limelight-2633028">flaws</a> in the <keyword id="17408" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="infrastructure">infrastructure</keyword>. To achieve this it has given itself a deadline of 31 March 2020. In fact, the railways has already <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/railways-eliminates-all-unmanned-level-crossings-from-4-zones-5239251/">eliminated</a> all UMLCs in four zones on <keyword id="409555" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="broad-gauge">broad gauge</keyword> routes in July — West Central Railway, Central Railway, Eastern Railway and South East Central Railway — and is well on its way to eliminating unmanned level crossings in 11 zones by September 2018. <div type="image" title="pexels-photo-892541." tempid="406286" msid="64859688" hostid="261"></div>

 </li><li>Giving old, worn-out tracks an upgrade: A <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/586-train-accidents-in-last-5-years-53-due-to-derailments/articleshow/60141578.cms">Times of India</a> report in October 2017 claimed that almost 53% of the 586 train accidents in the last five years were due to derailments. And ageing and/or defective railways tracks is one of the primary causes of derailments. Therefore, the railways has boosted its efforts to replace its ageing tracks and repair defective ones. In fact, the railways claim that there is a 50% increase in rail track renewal from 2,926 kilometres in 2013-14 to 4,405 kilometres in 2017-18. </li><li>Construction of foot-over-bridges: In September 2017, a stampede at <keyword id="6358070" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword>’s Elphinstone Railway Station foot-over-bridge claimed 22 lives. The cause of the stampede is not clear but it is quite apparent that the bridge was too narrow and clearly not sufficient to handle the daily footfall of the station. In fact, a <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2017/sep/29/mumbai-elphinstone-station-stampede-railways-ignored-warning-that-its-foot-over-bridges-are-narrow-1664659.html">CAG report in 2006</a> had flagged that the railways had reduced the width of the bridges and stated that foot-over-bridges should be at least 6 m width at all suburban railway platforms. However, now the railways claims that they have managed to up its game and has constructed 74 bridges per year between 2014-18 which is a 221% jump from 23 per year during 2009-14. </li><li>Device to guide train drivers through fog: Come winters, rail travel becomes a massive nightmare. Lack of visibility thanks to extreme fog inevitably leads to delays and accidents. But in December 2017, the national transporter installed <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2017/dec/12/indian-railways-to-use-gps-enabled-devices-to-fight-fog-this-season-1725490.html">4,920 GPS-enabled FOG PASS devices</a> to help loco pilots navigate through the fog. The gadget displays a map of tracks, signals, stations and level crossings and alerts drivers of approaching signals 500 meters ahead, which in turn helps the driver increase or decrease the speed of the train. Believe it or not, before these devices, the common practice to alert drivers was to tie <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Railways-tie-crackers-to-beat-fog/articleshow/45526196.cms">crackers</a> to the tracks.

However, the Indian Railways plans to remedy the issue by introducing waterproof locomotive engines to basically tow stranded trains that. The revamped stations will ape modern airports and will therefore include modern facilities like escalators, lifts, subways, ramps, AC VIP lounge, AC waiting room and rest rooms and shopping malls. Apart from this, the stations will will be beautified with local artworks.</li><li>Cleanliness: In order to implement the Swachh Railways mission, the railways has introduced mechanised cleaning system at 488 stations and has started using an automatic rail-mounted machine to keep its tracks at platforms clean. And to keep a check on freelance housekeeping contractors, passengers will be asked to rate the cleanliness based on which the contractor will be paid.</li><li>Increasing rail connectivity: The Prime Minister’s ‘Act East Policy’ has given a much-required boost to the infrastructural development in northeast India. The first priority was to convert the entire North East rail network to a broad gauge system which it aims to do by 2020.</li></ol>

Indian Railways is planning a major overhaul: Here's what's in store

India is the fastest growing economy in the world. While the GDP of the country is skyrocketing, lack of proper sanitation at rural parts of the country or even the hygiene quotient of many urban toilets is a major factor that is hurting the happiness index. In India, many men take recourse in the ancient and raw form of civilization by relieving themselves in the open. However women, due their biological hurdle don’t leverage such opportunity. 
 
The result? 
 
Women are often subjected to harsh realities by being forced to use unhygienic and filthy toilets that often result in Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) and other fungal diseases. The government did take a lot of measures to restructure hygienic and clean toilets for people, the results aren’t much encouraging. 
 
The 20 lakh Mumbai local women commuters, five lakh daily Delhi metro women travellers, 11 million annual women passengers at Delhi airport, the four in 10 pregnant women who undergo caesarean surgeries in urban areas, the 90 million women in India suffering from arthritis, and the more than 50 percent women who have at least one UTI during their lifetime. 
 
Even in railway stations and marketplaces, where there are toilets, most of them aren’t hygienic enough as those should be. 
 
Aiming to bridge the gap and find a solution, Deep Bajaj along with his co-founders Mohit Bajaj and Deepak Thareja came up with an ingenious product called PeeBuddy - the country’s first female urination device which allows women to stand and urinate even in dirty public toilets, so no more wiping of seats/making chairs and also lessening the risk of contracting infections. The product is also helpful for usage during Arthritis &amp; Pregnancy. The three formed the parent company First Step Digital Pvt Ltd in 2015 to take on other challenges. 
With women intimate hygiene and wellness as core focus, this Delhi based start-up with PeeBuddy has secured Rs. 2.96cr Pre-Series A Funding from Indian Angel Network last month. 
 
So how did they get the idea from? 
 
 
 
“The idea was born on a road trip from Delhi to Jaipur in 2014. We were four couples on a road trip. The women were really troubled, they were not drinking water/beverages from the fear of using a dirty toilet, two of them almost cried and we stopped at every fuel station on the way. All they wanted was clean toilets where seat didn’t have to be wiped (or where they could do without squat/making chairs), we were utterly unsatisfied by hygiene levels at most eateries and fuel stations.” 
 
“The Eureka moment happened when one of the wives said that she wished she was in Europe because there she could have access to a reusable, plastic device to urinate in any dirty toilet. This is when it struck me that women in India don’t have access to clean public loos when they’re on the go and there was a need for a device to address this issue and PeeBuddy was born. We finalized the shape, applied for a design patent, got it in 2015 and started selling. Our Products Empower them to live, travel and operate better. The business model revolves around identifying such issues and solving those using our unique solutions," Deep told Business Insider. 
 
At a time, when women are going a lot of distress in the world, at least they can take a respite while peeing.

Here's how a road trip made three men invent a product for women's hygiene

The <keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Railways">Indian Railways</keyword> is planning to discontinue giving blankets in some AC trains, following criticism that it gives dirty blankets to passengers. Recently, a CAG report criticised the railways on cleanliness and hygiene in trains and stations. Instead, railways is working on a pilot project to maintain the temperature of the <keyword id="6369612" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="AC-coaches">AC coaches</keyword>. The railways will work on a pilot project and maintain the temperature at 24°C in these AC coaches, up from the current 19°C. According to initial estimates, the move to do away with blankets is an economical option, considering that it takes Rs 55 to clean the bedroll while passengers are charged just Rs 22 for it. Railways guidelines stipulate that the blankets are to be washed every one to two months, which was not being followed, resulting in the transporter being flooded with complaints.

New Delhi, Feb 26 () The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the National Technical Textiles Mission with an outlay of Rs 1,480 crore to position India as a leading manufacturer of technical fabrics that are mostly used in industrial applications. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had in the budget on February 1 announced a proposal to set up a National Technical Textiles Mission with a four-year implementation period from 2020-21 to 2023-24. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Textiles Minister Smriti Irani told reporters here. Technical textiles are material and products made primarily for their technical properties and functional requirements. They have wide usage such as agro-textiles, medical textiles, geo-textiles, protection-textiles, industrial-textiles, sports-textiles and many other usages. Use of technical textiles have benefits of increased productivity in agriculture, horticulture and aquaculture fields, better protection of military, para-military, police and security forces, stronger and sturdier transportation infrastructure for highways, railways, ports and airports and in improving hygiene and health-care of general public. In terms of the projections of the last baseline survey on technical textiles submitted in 2015, the market size in India for the year 2017-18 is projected as Rs 1,16,217 crore. Although there is no projection in the last baseline study with regard to the projections for the 2020-21, taking into account the current trend of growth and various initiatives of the Government, domestic market size of the technical textiles is expected to cross Rs 2 lakh crore by the year 2020-21.
