Dr Rai is also serving as a distinguished fellow, ORF. Dr Rai has over 30 years of experience in information technology, including e-governance, cybersecurity, and cyber laws. He played an instrumental role in drafting national policies on cyber laws and cyber security. He represented the country in various internet governance and cybersecurity discussions. He had held several key positions under the Government of India. Dr Rai had served as the Director-General, CERT-in (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Executive Director, ERNET India. He was also the group coordinator, e-security and cyber law division, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India. The Retailers Association of India (RAI) on Friday called for <keyword id="20141385" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lower-taxes" source="keywords">lower taxes</keyword> for individuals to generate demand and spur <keyword id="20018646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumption" source="keywords">consumption</keyword> besides seeking low-cost finance, subsidies and benefits on land rates and necessities such as <keyword id="20028294" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electricity" source="keywords">electricity</keyword> for retailers ahead of <keyword id="6360189" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Union-Budget" source="Orion">Union Budget</keyword> FY25. Retailing in India accounts for about 10% of the country's GDP and the sector is second only to agriculture in terms of the number of people directly employed, RAI said in its pre-Budget memorandum highlighting areas that need attention in order to make the industry stronger. "To ensure the growth of the sector, the Union Budget for FY25 should focus on generating demand and spurring consumption by offering benefits or concessions in the form of lower taxes. It will boost the overall consumer sentiment and benefit the retail sector, it said adding, consumption equals to development and the "tax benefits and relief to individual <keyword id="59866" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taxpayers" source="Orion">taxpayers</keyword> will increase the monthly disposable income and support consumption", the memorandum noted. Further, the budget should outline supportive policies, simplified regulations, skill development and simple goods and services tax (GST) norms to aid the development of the retail industry, RAI said. Asking for low-cost finance to retailers, the industry body said, "There is a need to provide lower interest rate to the retailers through the special announcement in the Budget to assure easier financing for the retail businesses." It also asked the government to consider the food and beverages retail sector as an essential service and said "subsidies and benefits should be given on land rates and other necessities such as electricity". RAI also said there is a need to expedite the formulation and implementation of '<keyword id="5649262" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Retail-Policy" source="Orion">National Retail Policy</keyword>' to enable ease of doing business and that "such a step would provide a substantial boost to the retail sector". Stating that benefits to retail and wholesale trade MSMEs are restricted to priority sector lending only, RAI also recommended that retail and wholesale traders should be eligible for all benefits available to other MSMEs. Further, the retailers' body asked the Centre to encourage and incentivise states to adopt 'The Model Shops and Establishment (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Services) Act 2016 that enables states to choose to keep shops and other such establishments open 24X7 all through the year.

RAI's Budget wishlist: Lower taxes for individuals, benefits on land rates, electricity

<ul><li>In our latest interview series, we speak to a few CMOs to understand how they are helping out their organisations find the right ways to connect with consumers.</li><li>S Prasanna Rai, Vice President, Marketing, <keyword id="167620" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro-Consumer-Care">Wipro Consumer Care</keyword> &amp; Lighting shares how the <keyword id="34523" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg">FMCG</keyword> giant is trying to keep empathy at the center of its communication during the second wave of COVID-19.</li></ul>2020 was an unprecedented experience for businesses of all kinds and sizes. When the entire country was asked to shut down in March 2020, consumer care company Wipro quickly shifted its focus to where consumers were: online. It was trying to take it one day at a time by understanding the ever-changing consumer demand and shift in the media landscape. Now that the second wave has hit the country in full force and people have been working from home for more than a year now, Wipro’s S Prasanna Rai, Vice President, Marketing, Wipro Consumer Care &amp; Lighting told us that this wave was relatively easier to handle for the organization. He said, “The first wave lockdown was a sudden unknown event with no precedent, which meant a war room kind of response with cross-functional meetings daily. This learning in the first lockdown has helped put together a set of working approaches in place, that were deployed during this second lockdown and relatively easier to handle. Product portfolio tweaking to adapt to facilitate manufacturing and supply chain, product development process continued with remote working. Consumer research was more qualitative, and with the brand teams being personally involved rather than on research team interpretation. So during the second wave, the work rhythm was more weekly than daily and also, the extent of communication and reviews required were of lesser frequency than during the first wave.” However, in this second wave, everyone is impacted directly or indirectly. As a company leader, Rai has also found his role changing lately. He has been focusing equally on the inside as much as the outside communication. Telling us how he has tried to be there for his employees, Rai said, “There is a need to lead with empathy and support. In the second wave, every individual has been impacted, either directly or indirectly. It is essential to listen to their concerns and address them empathically and be there for them in every way possible. Even a small act of help and kindness goes a long way in easing someone's woes. It is also essential to use the organisation and personal network in emergencies to put together and provide resources/medicines quickly wherever/whoever required.” Rai and his team have also changed the company’s on-ground selling process to help its sales team stay safe and secure. For example, for a <keyword id="2161100" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-product-launch">new product launch</keyword>, Wipro had the whole sales pitch in the form of a WhatsApp video. The fragrance of the product was provided in spray format to help demonstrate it. The idea was to prioritise employee’s safety and still give its consumers the touch and feel experience. “As marketers, we are custodians of our brands. We must observe, analyse and react in real-time and continue to evolve in line with the dynamic consumer behaviour. Keeping the customer at the heart of any strategy, we need to be more agile, thoughtful and resilient during these difficult times,” said Rai. Wipro's Santoor is its largest selling brand, which is also India's second largest soap brand and 35% of its business comes from the lighting segment. Even during a pandemic-hit year, Wipro saw about 14% growth in its India business in the first nine months of the fiscal ending March. As per company’s media statement, Wipro witnessed this strong performance on the back of operational efficiencies and new product launches. It had launched new products like surface sanitizers, expanded floor cleaners, anti-germ liquid detergent. Wipro is also considering launching a few products which will be exclusively available on e-commerce platforms as the company saw its e-commerce sale spike by 2X in FY21 than the previous fiscal. According to NielsenIQ’s Retail Intelligence, at the end of the December quarter, 2.8% FMCG sales in India came from e-commerce and in urban cities, it was higher at 7.5%. Apart from new launches and upping its digital game, Rai will continue to focus on communicating empathetically and connect with its customers on a personal level. Sharing his goals for this quarter, Rai said, “Every organisation and every role has now accepted that the pandemic will be around for some time and will not go away so quickly. So it is crucial to take it as part of the personal and professional life and learn to navigate this effectively. Both in personal life and on the work front, the goals continue to be the same – it is the approach to achieving these goals that are tweaked according to the current environment and having empathy, ensuring safety and allaying fears of colleagues and team members.” “Ensure every piece of communication on a brand is in the context or empathetic to the consumer's environment. In some cases, we had to change the tone and mood of the advertising to suit the circumstances without changing or altering the product/brand message much. It is also essential that the product promise we make is credible and enhances its trust,” added Rai. Wipro’s 2019-20 sales revenue stood at $1.09 billion.

A Gen Z crypto hedge fund founder says bitcoin is in its 'rocketship' growth phase - even after passing the $1 trillion mark

NEW DELHI: Dr Manmohan Singh’s legacy came under yet another round of intense attack with former <keyword id="6356851" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="CAG">CAG</keyword> Vinod Rai alleging that the former <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">prime minister</keyword> was aware of major scandals as they unfolded, refuting claims Singh was not fully aware of the machinations that resulted in humungous loss to the public exchequer and mauled the <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> party’s electoral fortunes. 
 The former CAG’s revelations challenge the defence of Singh that the <keyword id="6446767" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="2G-scam">2G scam</keyword> was perpetuated by A Raja using the political necessity of Congress to humour DMK, thus fastening the mega swindle to the reformist PM. 
 
Rai, whose book “Not Just An Accountant” is set for release in the next few days, claimed that Dr Singh was alerted by his senior cabinet minister Kamal Nath about the brewing 2G scam. 
 
Adding credibility to Rai’s claim, Kamal Nath admitted that he had cautioned Dr Singh against 2G allocations. “I wrote to the Prime Minister that I am hearing all sorts of things are going on in 2G allocation. The PM chose to do nothing,” Nath told Times Now. The former commerce minister said he feels that had Dr Singh intervened “things would have been different for the Congress”. However, there was no point flogging a dead horse, said Nath even as he emphasized that “A Raja was prosecuted for what he did”, and that Rai should not resort to sensationalism to boost the sales of his book. 
 
 
 
The former CAG also claimed that he was under pressure to drop the name of the former civil aviation minister from the federal auditor’s report on the controversial purchase of aircraft for public carriers. He said the then minister, Praful Patel, had “nudged” the public carriers to go in for the large-scale purchase. 
 
“All hell broke loose when the draft report reached the ministry and bureaucrats of all hues tried to prompt the CAG to drop the word “nudge”. 
 
Patel denied the charge saying that he never met Rai. 
 Rai’s is only the latest book from those who have had a ringside view of Dr Singh’s prime ministership, and who later chose to record the unpleasant realities of the PMO under him and the <keyword id="26374" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="UPA-government">UPA government</keyword>. Dr Singh’s former media advisor Sanjaya Baru, former external affairs minister K Natwar Singh and former coal secretary PC Parakh have all recorded the makings of many scandals that have marked the UPA decade, portraying the former PM as the leader who was not in control or unwilling to intervene. 
 Elaborating on what he had told TOI exclusively on August 24, Rai on Thursday told Time Now that he was approached by three Congress MPs – former <keyword id="6356398" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Law-Minister">Law minister</keyword> Ashwani Kumar who had to resign for allegedly pressuring the CBI to dilute PMO’s role in the Coalgate scam, <keyword id="56431" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sanjay-Nirupam">Sanjay Nirupam</keyword> and Sandeep Dikshit – to drop the name of the Prime Minister from the CAG report on 2G spectrum allocation.

“I mentioned in the book that after the PAC meeting on the 2G, Congress MPs did tell me that keep the PM out of this,” Rai said. 
 
Reacting to Rai’s claim, Sanjay Nirupam said the former CAG was lying. “I have never spoken to him,” Nirupam said. 
 
Rai said the irregularities in allocation of 2G licences date back to the tenure of Raja’s predecessor and his DMK colleague Dayanidhi Maran in the telecom ministry. “And we had evidence of the licence being given out at particular prices not only from Raja's time but before also from the previous minister who was also from the DMK. We found that there was a track record that the previous minister had started in a particular way and Raja followed that way. But Raja kept informing the PM what he was planning to do,” he said. 
 
Rai said then PM Manmohan Singh’s own cabinet colleagues were advising him against the licence allocation in arbitrary manner. “Like his own cabinet colleagues were saying that lets discuss this in a GoM. The finance ministry was also saying that lets bring it to a group of ministers. The law ministry had also advised him to do that. But somehow it did not take place,” he said.

The former CAG said former PM had enough time to stop the allocations. “It could have been stopped because between this letter of 26th December and 10th of January when the LOIs were actually issued, there was a fortnight’s time,” he said. 
 
“The buck stops at the PM's desk in any parliamentary democracy. He is the CEO of the country. He can stop, or he can initiate, both. I have written in the book that he probably chose not to stop,” Rai said.

Rai was addressing members of the <keyword id="6354778" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Banking">banking</keyword> fraternity at an event organized by The Maharashtra State Co-operative Banks Association (<keyword id="8679814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="mscba">MSCBA</keyword>) and cyber security startup <keyword id="4510266" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sequretek">Sequretek</keyword>. MSCBA had recently partnered with Sequretek and announced a comprehensive enterprise cyber security program for co-operative banks in Maharashtra. “Today our banks’ ICT infrastructures are vulnerable because their architecture isn’t strong. They follow a flat network architecture. Banks need to reorient their architecture,” Rai told Business Insider. Using an analogy, he further explained, “When you build a house, you take utmost care to ensure that you have safety measures at different steps. Banks need to do something similar. There need to have an architecture that puts blockades at a number of places, to make it difficult for cyber criminals to get into their systems.” Even private banks have not made adequate progress “There is an immediate need to define Security Operation Centers (SOCs). While most private banks have SOCs in place, the structure needs to be defined properly. Indian Prime Minister’s former cyber security advisor says Indian banks are fundamentally unsafe

They invested in Ambee, an environmental intelligence startup, according to paper.vc. The filings sourced by paper.vc show that Bachchan invested ₹5 million. This is not Bachchan’s first investment in clean technology. She has invested in wind power projects in Maharashtra, around ten years back in Dhule and Nandurbar. Her latest investment in Ambee is an idea which was born out of an Internet of Things hackathon at Amazon Development Center in Bengaluru. The winners Akshay Joshi, Jaideep Singh and Madhusudan Anand founded Datair Technology, whose product is Ambee. The startup monitors which air quality with data has already installed over <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/making-sense-of-air-quality-using-sensors/articleshow/69262232.cms">100 sensors</a> in Bengaluru. Ambee raised an undisclosed amount of funding from Venture Catalysts in December 2018. From the network of investors on the incubation platform Venture Catalysts, former Google India head Rajan Anandan too had invested in the startup. The country has seen a growth in the number of air purifier startups. Nanoclean is another such startup which promises to turn the air conditioner into an air purifier. New Delhi, Apr 16 () The Retailers Association of India (RAI) on Thursday urged government to "strongly consider" allowing all forms of retailers, not just e-commerce players, to operate through home delivery during the extended lockdown period. While supporting the government's move to extend the lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic, RAI said such a move will facilitate availability of all goods at the doorsteps of customers while supporting economic revival for the country. "We urge the government to strongly consider that all forms of home delivery across retailers be allowed the benefit of doing business via contactless home delivery," the retailers body said in a statement. Allowing this for all retailers, and not just e-commerce players, will facilitate the availability of all goods at the doorsteps of customers, it added. "This will ensure that there are fewer reasons for the public to step outside of their homes. It will also ensure greater availability of supplies and help conform to the requirement of social distancing," RAI said. This move will further support the economic revival for the country as well as allow for new avenues of job creation in the market, it added. On the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday for the extended lockdown, RAI said it brings the focus that the government has on maintaining social distancing while ensuring that consumers get what they want in a safe and contactless manner.
