Chandigarh's tax department ordered an investigation on the hotel for illegally imposing GST or Goods and Services Tax. The law doesn't allow hotels to charge GST on fresh fruits. Indian hotels are amongst the highly taxed in the world. Luxury stays in five-star hotel start from ₹15,000 and can go up to ₹50,000 for a night. These charges don't include food or spa services. Most hotels levy as much as 28% GST on many services.

After Bose’s tweet on how he was overcharged for two bananas went viral, it caught the attention of the city’s tax department. Mandip Singh Brar, the Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner of Excise and Taxation, ordered an investigation on the hotel for charging illegal GST on fresh fruits. “Taking cognisance of the video and bill posted by the actor, I have ordered an investigation. I have directed Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner (AETC) Rajeev Chaudhary to conduct a thorough probe on how the hotel had charged GST on fresh fruits. Strict action will be taken if found guilty,” Brar told the Indian Express in an <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/chandigarh/probe-ordered-jw-marriott-hotel-bills-rahul-bose-rs-442-for-two-bananas-5849957/">interview</a>. Actor Rahul Bose recently took to Twitter to show how the hotel charged ₹442.50 for the ‘fruit platter’ which included just two bananas. Rahul Bose’s tweet lands Marriott in trouble as taxman will probe the case of ‘expensive bananas’

This comes at a time when startups have been battling funding winter and elevated inflation, in a rising interest rate regime. BharatPe, a fintech is amongst those with multiple high profile exits, including its co-founder and former managing director Ashneer Grover, along with his wife Madhuri Jain Grover – who not only had to leave the company, but were also sued by BharatPe in December 2022 for ₹88.6 crore. The company alleged that both husband and wife engaged in misappropriation of funds including creating fake bills, enlisting fictitious vendors and so on. Adding to BharatPe’s woes is the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/bharatpe-ceo-suhail-sameer-to-step-down-five-months-after-taking-over/articleshow/96703750.cms">departure</a> of its CEO Suhail Sameer on January 3. Sameer took over as the company’s CEO in August 2021, a year after being appointed as the company’s president. He will now serve as a strategic advisor starting January 7, 2023. Before Sameer, BharatPe witnessed the departure of four other high level executives last November. This includes Nehul Malhotra, head of PostPe which is BharatPe’s ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ arm. The others were the CTO Vijay Aggarwal; Rajat Jain, the chief product officer; and Geetanshu Singla, VP of technology. They moved on to pursue their own entrepreneurial passions, the company had then said in a statement. Zomato rocked by multiple top level exits, too Sameer’s resignation comes hours after Gunjan Patidar, Zomato’s co-founder and chief technology officer, tendered his resignation. Patidar was one of the first few employees of Zomato who built the core tech systems of the company. “Over the last ten plus years, he (Patidar) also nurtured a stellar tech leadership team that is capable of taking on the mantle of leading the tech function going forward. His contribution to building Zomato has been invaluable,” said the company. Patidar’s exit is the third high-level exit at the food delivery giant in two months. In November last year, another one of Zomato’s co-founders Mohit Gupta tendered his resignation. Its head of new initiatives Rahul Ganjoo; and Siddharth Jhawar, vice-president of global growth also quit in the same month. The list goes on as in September 2022, Zomato’s deputy CFO Nitin Savara also tendered his resignation. The company has been bleeding money and it reported a consolidated loss of ₹251 crore in Q2 FY23. New age companies’ top heads move in and out of big tech companies There is a lot of churn among top executives of new-age tech companies as well as big techs. Online beauty retailer Nykaa’s CFO Arvind Agarwal, who had been with the company through its IPO, quit and joined fintech major PayU as its India CFO, this November. On the other hand, new-age companies have also been able to attract executives from major companies into their fold as well. Case in point is Sugar Cosmetics who brought in Amit Aggarwal, Marico’s head of finance of its India business, as its CFO. Adding to it, Amazon India’s director of grocery, food and health Sameer Khetarpal resigned and moved to Jubilant FoodWorks as CEO, a franchisee that runs Domino’s Pizza, Dunkin Donuts outlets in India. Meta India country head Ajit Mohan tendered his resignation in November 2022, to join rival Snap as the President of Asia Pacific. Following this, WhatsApp India’s head Abhijit Bose and Meta India’s public policy head Rajiv Aggarwal also resigned. The latter joined Samsung India. WhatsApp Pay’s director and head Manesh Mahatme also left his position in September to join Amazon India as director, product and engineering. Last but not the least, another shocking exit was of Parag Agarwal, former CEO of Twitter who was fired by Elon Musk in October, a year after he was appointed for the position. "If you're a witness to domestic violence in your home, please report. If you're a witness to domestic violence in your neighborhood, please report. If you're a survivor of domestic violence, please report it. Bollywood celebrities urge people to stand up against domestic violence amid lockdown

 Bollywood actor <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword>, or controversy’s favourite child as he is alternatively called, has landed himself in trouble once again, and unlike his past face-offs with controversies, he can’t claim to be drunk, unaware, or not responsible. 
 
Khan, who is busy promoting his upcoming film <keyword id="6355056" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sultan">Sultan</keyword>, which hits the theatres this Eid, has compared his post-shoot self to a raped woman who can’t walk straight because of the pain; yes, that happened for real. 
 
When asked about the difficulties he faced while shooting for the movie based on the life of an Olympian wrestler, this is what Khan had to say, "While shooting, during those six hours, there'd be so much of lifting and thrusting on the ground involved. That was tough for me because if I was lifting, I'd have to lift the same 120-kilo guy 10 times for 10 different angles. And likewise, get thrown that many times on the ground. This act is not repeated that many times in the real fights in the ring. When I used to walk out of the ring, after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman. I couldn't walk straight. I would eat and then, head right back to training. That couldn't stop." 
 
The 50-year old actor has thus compared his pain to that of a raped woman, something that hasn't gone down well with many, resulting in an uproar on social media, with people taking a dig at his selection of words and using something as sensitive as ‘rape’ to portray the difficulties he had while shooting for a film.

Salman ‘Sultan’ Khan is in trouble again, and this time, he wasn’t even drunk

<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/34325207.cms" />Mumbai voted and so did Delhi. Bangalore did it, too! And Kolkata was not left behind either. While the whole country seems reluctant to comment on whether there is a genuine Narendra Modi wave this time around or whether it is the handiwork of the media, no one can possibly deny a couple of poll trends which have come up this time. 
 To start with, the number of first-time voters has been the highest this time. The other trend, apparently new in the Indian context, is the emergence of the ‘<keyword id="1725157" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Selfie">selfie</keyword> brigade’ as voters pose with index-finger-inked selfies on their respective social networking sites. 
 In a narcissistic world, anything that glorifies the self is welcomed with open arms. Err… did we say arms? We mean the hands that take the pictures, of course. Social networking sites seem to thrive on the selfie culture, helping people glorify the self, even if it means throwing privacy and caution to the wind. In that sense, being ‘social’ is more about self-promotion, rather than networking with people and meeting them. <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>, <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> and Twitter are the new Page 3. 
 
When you say that all the world’s a stage, the elections must be the biggest platform to stage a great performance. So what other option was left for the 23.16 million young, peppy, cyber-savvy Gen Y, hitting the polling booths to exercise their franchise? It had to be a flood of inked selfies, expressly showing their joy and pride that come with casting the ballot. 
 
Giving into this trend were celebrities and politicians who would not lose a chance to show that they did fulfil their responsibility. Rajinikath’s fans posted a picture of the thalaiva voting; Shah Rukh posed with his inky finger outside the booth, and so did Aamir and his wife Kiran. Sachin Tendulkar also surrendered to this selfie craze. Director-actor <keyword id="5015" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Farhan-Akhtar">Farhan Akhtar</keyword> posted his selfie with the picture taken at his house; Rahul Bose took his selfie with a poker face; <keyword id="8145" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Preity-zinta">Preity Zinta</keyword> went for a selfie pose for a snapshot while Raveena Tandon looked beautiful, shooting her inky index finger inside her car. 
 
But there were even more luminaries who followed the trend. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan voted without giving it a miss. Singer Kailash Kher turned to his camera soon after voting and showed the world he had performed his duty as an Indian citizen. Sonam Kapoor looked all radiant while posing with that inky finger right in front of her. And an almost forgotten Dino Morea posted his selfie soon after voting was done. English Vinglish director Gauri Shinde didn’t miss posing before her own camera after she voted. In a nutshell, the selfie frenzy took over during the polls and caught hold of everyone, almost everywhere. 
 
The ones who didn’t post their selfies were probably the most ‘tech-unabled’ people. The incessant flow of selfies were fast and furious, came in all shapes and sizes, and featured varied expressions – right from brilliant, billion-dollar smiles to haggard to merry ones. But the most disappointed lot of this season were those who went to the booth armed with their cell phones (naturally 3G-enabled ones, which would enable them to post a picture even before the ink on their fingers dried), only to find that their names were missing from the voters’ list. Their disappointment was as huge as Viswanathan Anand’s when he lost the World Championship to young Magnus Carlson. What a pity. And what a selfie-opportunity missed for life (or at least for the next five years). 
 
Just as the indelible ink has made its mark throughout the democratic process, pinpointing the serious nature of our political responsibilities, people posting selfies after voting also tells us another story – a different story altogether. It amply shows that upholding the democratic system in India has now become a heady combination of duty and exhibitionism. 
 
Now, we call that finger-lookin’ good!
