He shared Sony Music South's post highlighting how an AI tool was used to recreate the late singers' voices. He wrote, "We took permission from their families and sent deserving remuneration for using their voice algorithms...technology is not a threat and a nuisance if we use it right." He also added the hashtags respect and nostalgia in the post. Bamba Bakya, who collaborated with Rahman on many songs, passed away in 2022 due to a cardiac arrest. Shahul Hameed died in a car crash in 1997, near Chennai. My browsing history for the day suggested I'd read over a dozen news articles, numerous Slack messages, plenty of Twitter threads, and a bunch of notes for my next assignment. Yet, somehow, I couldn't recall much of it. I remembered some vague contours of the content I had consumed but lacked the details. That afternoon wasn't particularly special — a few days later, I struggled to recollect the details of a lengthy COVID story I had read during a conversation with a friend. These instances weren't some crises of memory, nor were they due to a head injury. I just had too much rattling around in my brain. No matter what or how much I read online, my mind can't help but forget it shortly after. I don't blame my brain, either. Most people consume an overwhelming volume of text every day —<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/technology/10data.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> hundreds of thousands of words</a> — so it's no surprise that our memories struggle to retain more than a few scant details. "Humans have worse memories than we think we do, and memory for text, in general, isn't great," Virginia Clinton-Lisell, an associate professor of educational psychology at the University of North Dakota, told me. The internet only makes this brain-capacity problem worse. The online-reading experience is full of obstacles that prevent our brains from locking the information we consume into our long-term memories. When you read a book, things like page numbers and the physical ability to hold and turn pages help your brain make a mental map of the information the book presents you with. Websites, however, don't have those kinds of memory triggers. Heyday, which bills itself as an AI-memory assistant, promises to fix the two key challenges I've faced with reading-list tools: it demands little to no effort from me and aims to help me remember things better. Then, it sorts what you've read into categories based on topic or on how much time you spent on something. Once it's added the information to the catalog, it provides dynamic prompts next to search results or within articles themselves to help resurface the information you've already read.After installing the browser extension, Heyday went to work scanning everything I was reading. Once it gathered enough information, it began to resurface what I had read. When I Googled "Elon Musk" to look into the news about the Twitter CEO<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-bans-on-journalists-only-hurts-twitter-2022-12"> banning journalists</a>, the app pulled up a list of related links from my history with their key summaries next to my search results. In this case, Heyday pulled up a Substack newsletter from a journalist, a tweet thread on how Musk lashed out in a Spaces chatroom, and a profile of another social network people were flocking to. This list allowed me to instantly recall what I've already read about the topic and added helpful context to my search, making it a more valuable use of my time.<div type="image" title="Screenshot of Heyday prompts next to Google search results about Elon Musk" height="931" width="1242" msid="97279237" hostid="261" sizebytes="90606"></div>When reading an article, Heyday would also underline key words that I've read about in the past, and when I hovered over them, the app told me more about that topic based on what I've read. While Heyday's browser tool behaved like a memory assistant, its website felt like a snapshot of my online memory. It categorized all the content I viewed by type: videos, tweets, research reports, and so on. Since its search tool understands natural language, I could use it to pinpoint a query, such as "articles about Elon Musk's ban," without worrying about the correct syntax or key words. Plus, if there were any articles in my history that I particularly liked reading, I could ask Heyday to store it in a separate folder like "favorites" or "recipes," and the next time I come across similar content, it will automatically recommend I save the article to that folder. <div type="image" title="Screenshot of Heyday's website showing different content folders" height="963" width="1284" msid="97279239" hostid="261" sizebytes="86992"></div>One potential drawback is that because of how it runs, Heyday collects a treasure trove of data on you and your browsing history. But Samiur Rahman, a cofounder and the CEO of the startup, told me the data is encrypted and that their business model doesn't depend on selling user data or ads. Instead, their revenue comes from the $19 monthly subscription to use the tool. While the subscription model may help keep my data safe, the steep price point limits the tool to people like researchers or journalists who would use it a lot and could justify the cost. Another limitation with the tool was that the search widget often took a few seconds to show up next to my search results. So, there were times when I ended up clicking one of the results instead of waiting to see what the pop-up widget resurfaced. And though it never failed to register what I read, Heyday's algorithm occasionally did not understand a link's content and context, resulting in relevant articles not showing up when I expected them to while conducting another type of research. But in my three weeks with Heyday, I consistently felt that it made a difference in how much I could recall — and the experts I spoke with had an explanation. New information enters a first "forgetting curve" in our memories, and much of it slips down the drain unless we spend time reviewing the material. Dillon told me that repetition or rereading is crucial to remembering new information better. He told me that Heyday's continuous exposure to the same information can prove vital to aid memory. Similarly, Clinton-Lisell told me that making connections between subjects or themes naturally improves comprehension and memory, adding that if a tool like Heyday helps you make connections as you read, it should enable you to better remember. In my experience, because the app repeatedly exposed me to the content I had read and helped me make connections between things I was reading, it helped the information stick in my head. <h2>Refocusing the mind </h2>Rahman told me that Heyday's ultimate goal as a memory assistant is to "increase the creative output of individuals." By freeing up the brain from the task of encoding and resurfacing memories, he believes the brain will have more freedom to "focus on things that the human brain is uniquely great at — thinking, creativity, and analysis." Heyday isn't alone in this venture. Broader efforts to supplement our memories are underway across the industry. Dennis Xu, a cofounder of the OpenAI-backed Mem AI, a self-organizing workspace, wants to aid the brain in recalling disparate pieces of information so it works less to recall raw data you can easily look up. The goal of Mem AI is to allow people to focus on creative outputs and remember personal memories like a loved one's face. "I think that's a more worthy use of the brain's memory than, for example, remembering what date the Battle of the Alamo took place," Xu said. Rewind, a startup that raised $10 million in a round that Andreessen Horowitz led last year,<a href="https://techcrunch.com/2022/11/01/rewind-wants-to-revamp-how-you-remember-with-millions-from-a16z/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> said</a> its "long-term vision is giving humans perfect memory." Rewind captures everything you look at on your computer and constructs a timeline of your activities, letting you simply search for facts and conversations instead of having to remember them or spend time digging through various apps. Personal AI, on the other hand, wants to clone your mind, creating a virtual "second brain" that houses all your memories and data. However, if we routinely begin to outsource the job of memorization to internet tools, would our biological memory evolve to become obsolete? There is already<a href="https://scholar.harvard.edu/files/dwegner/files/sparrow_et_al._2011.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> evidence</a> that the internet has caused our memories to get worse since we don't feel the need to memorize what we can Google anymore. Personal AI's spokesperson, Jonathan Bikoff, doesn't necessarily see that as a bad thing. He expects technology-enabled minds to be more powerful and reliable than our biological minds. "With assistance from AI, humans may be able to enjoy more of life, embrace forgetfulness, and learn to weave AI into our every day," Bikoff said. Though the jury is still out on our memory's biological evolution, Dillon said the extent that the web and digital access is making memorization obsolete, at least for some people, is interesting. "Why learn a poem by heart if you can pull it up on demand? What's the point of learning your math tables if you can just ask Alexa for the answer? Like our bodies, do our minds also need to be exercised to maintain full functioning?" Dillon said, concluding: "I think there's some truth in this." I can't help but agree. During my Heyday use, the number of stories from its widget's list I had already forgotten about constantly surprised me. It was a reminder of just how much information I read slips from my brain. But while Heyday was effective at bridging the gap of my limited memory, making research easier, I worry that a reliance on the tool would make my memory even worse. But given the mounting volume of text we read online, perhaps we have already passed the point of no return. The modern world demands that we consume a massive amount of information, and our biological memories simply don't have the ability to remember it all. So instead of fighting a losing battle, an extended hard-drive-esque space like Heyday can be a vital supplement. The transitional constitutional charter, revealed earlier this week, has a strong Islamist slant in its very first article (emphasis ours):
"The Arab Republic of Egypt is a state whose system is democratic, based on the principle of citizenship; Islam is the religion of the state; Arabic is its official language; and the principles of Islamic sharia - which include its general evidences, its fundamental and jurisprudential rules, and its recognised sources in the doctrines of the people of the Sunna and Jam'aa (ie, Sunnism) - are the main source of legislation."
As long as that stipulation remains in the constitution, and the rising orthodox Islamic Al Nour Party <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/07/egypt-salafist-al-nour-party">remains poised to play a huge role</a> in forming the new government, it seems like Egypt may head down the same path of ousted president Mohammed Morsi ... only faster.
"For the Nour Party, one of the primary major goals is to implement sharia at the nearest possible opportunity," Ibrahim AbdulRahman, a Nour spokesman, <a href="http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2012/01/04/egypt_s_salafi_surge">told Foreign Policy in January.</a>
The focus of the Morsi government was mostly a <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/bennyjohnson/the-story-of-egypts-revolution-in-jurassic-park-gifs">steady march</a> toward Sharia Law. That was part of the reason the economy suffered as it did.

Egypt's heads of state seemed more intent on<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/egypts-10-reasons-gender-equality-bad-2013-3"> telling women</a> how to talk to their husbands than in rebuilding the economy.
Needless to say, now the Salafists have stepped in to assume the vacuum left behind in the wake of the Brotherhood's ouster. Like the Brotherhood, and unlike the moderate opposition, the Salafists have a well-organized political machine, and there's no reason to think they won't do exactly as the Muslim Brotherhood did when they rose to power — after all, <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/07/egypt-salafist-al-nour-party">they were big time allies</a> just a few months ago.
<a href="http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2013/07/egyptian-constitutional-declaration-post-morsi-transition.html#ixzz2YXMq3dU2">Bassem Sabry at the AI Monitor</a> had this to say about the developments:
The constitutional declaration shows the strong leverage the Salafist Al-Nour party has on the transitional process, already blocking two prime minister nominations.
The bargaining power [the] Salafists have right now (which increasingly appears to be bigger than what the <keyword id="6359526" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Military">military</keyword> and the opposition had expected), with the Salafists realizing how their presence helps the military and the opposition maintain the image of a wide multi-ideological revolution rather than that an anti-Islamist uprising, and does not play into “it’s a war against Islam” claims by the Brotherhood and some Islamists.
Though Sabry mention that the articles are supposed to be temporary — rewritten at a later date — he also writes that "temporary things have a way of becoming permanent."

It was my latest jaunt into the new and often uncharted territory of digital mental health care.Alison Darcy, the clinical psychologist at Stanford University who created <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/woebot/id1305375832?ls=1&amp;mt=8">Woebot</a>, based the tool on a type of treatment called <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/cognitive-behavioral-therapy/home/ovc-20186868">cognitive-behavioral therapy</a>, a heavily-researched clinical approach to depression that encourages people to examine how they react to challenging situations.Woebot isn't a replacement for an in-person therapist, according to Darcy, nor will it help you find one. Instead, the tool is part of a widening array of approaches to mental health. But it's fundamentally different from any form of therapy that's existed before."The Woebot experience doesn't map onto what we know to be a human-to-computer relationship and it doesn't map onto what we know to be a human-to-human relationship either," Darcy told Business Insider. "It seems to be something in the middle."The uniqueness of Woebot could prove to be its biggest strength - or cause its downfall. But with roughly <a href="http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics/prevalence/any-mental-illness-ami-among-us-adults.shtml">one in five Americans</a> struggling with some form of mental illness or psychiatric disease, experts agree that it's time for something new. <h2>An app that tells you when you're being too hard on yourself</h2>Depression is the <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs369/en/">leading cause of disability worldwide</a>, and <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs369/en/">it can kill</a>. But therapy is expensive, inconvenient, and often hard to approach. Of the roughly 20% of Americans who currently have a mental illness, estimates suggest that close to two-thirds have gone <a href="https://www.nami.org/NAMI/media/NAMI-Media/Infographics/GeneralMHFacts.pdf">at least a year without treatment</a>."We have this idea that if you're suffering, you need to talk to someone, and many of us insist on that. But insisting that that's the only way actually alienates a lot of people for whom that's not possible," Darcy said.Unlike traditional therapy, Woebot <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/woebot/id1305375832?ls=1&amp;mt=8">can be accessed anywhere, anytime</a> - provided the user has a smartphone. And it's free.Once you log in with your first name, you're set up. Woebot - a cute, animated robot - then asks you questions about yourself, from how you're feeling to what your energy is like at that moment.The artificial intelligence behind the app is programmed to provide scripted responses to users based on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). At times, chatting with Woebot can feel like a conversation, but most of the time, it feels like a fun game where each interaction provides a small kernel of wisdom. Over the week that I used the app, Woebot's responses grew a bit predictable, but I still enjoyed using it. I could see why the app would be helpful for many people suffering from a bout of anxiety or depression - especially those who are new to therapy.<h2>The lessons Woebot teaches make sense over text</h2>Several psychologists not involved with Woebot told Business Insider that CBT lends itself to being administered in a chatbot setting. A recent <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4219070/">review of studies</a> published in the journal World Psychiatry compared people who received the treatment online with people who received it in person, and found that the two settings were equally effective.One reason for this, according to Darcy, is that CBT focuses on the present as opposed to the past. Instead of talking to Woebot about your relationship with your mother or father, you might chat about a recent conflict at work or an argument you had with a friend."A premise of CBT is it's not the things that happen to us - it's how we react to them," Darcy said.Woebot uses that methodology to identify when someone is engaging in so-called "negative self-talk," which could involve feelings of guilt, shame, or low self-esteem. These types of thoughts stem from a distorted approach to events and relationships, Darcy said.If a friend forgot about your birthday, you might write a message to Woebot saying, "No one ever remembers me," or "I don't have any real friends." Woebot would probably tell you that you're engaging in a type of negative self-talk called all-or-nothing thinking, which is a distortion of reality. In reality, you do have friends, and people do remember you. One of those friends simply forgot your birthday."CBT skills are skills everyone can use," <a href="http://psychology.berkeley.edu/people/nancy-liu">Nancy Liu</a>, an assistant professor of clinical psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, told Business Insider.<h2>'The data blew us away'</h2>Before launching Woebot, Darcy and her team tested an early version of the tool on 70 college students who had reported symptoms of depression. The results of that study, <a href="https://mental.jmir.org/2017/2/e19/">published in April 2017 in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, Mental Health</a>, were promising. The participating students were split into two groups - one was assigned to chat with Woebot for two weeks, while the other was directed to read an e-book about depression.Unlike the students in the e-book group, those using Woebot saw a significant reduction in their depressive symptoms. They also reported chatting with the chatbot almost daily despite there being no requirements for how long they spent with it. "The data blew us away," Darcy told Business Insider in October, when Woebot launched exclusively on Facebook Messenger. "We were like, this is it."But Darcy is quick to point out that Woebot is not meant to be a replacement for traditional therapy."What we haven't done a good job of in [therapy] is give people an array of options. What about the people who aren't ready to talk to another person?" Darcy said. "This is part of the idea of meeting people where they're at."<h2>Digital therapy is booming</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Shutterstock</div></div></div>Realistically, meeting people where they are today means meeting them on their phones."The nice thing about something like Woebot is it's there on your phone while you're out there living your life," Liu said.Consistent access is one of the biggest advantages of the tool - it can be easily reached 24/7 with the tap of an icon, unlike a therapist on a 9-5 schedule.I once chatted with Woebot late at night was when I was feeling panicky - a time when I wouldn't have dared call or text my regular therapist for fear of bothering her. In that moment, when random worried thoughts were playing a mean game of tag in my mind, Woebot provided a bit of perspective and space.The program is not the only one of its kind, however. Other <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-text-based-therapy-is-changing-how-we-treat-mental-health">Silicon Valley-style approaches to addressing depression</a> include apps that replace the traditional psychiatry office with texting, chat rooms where you can discuss your problems anonymously, and services that enable employers to give staff access to therapists and counselors online. One such digital mental health care service, X2AI, is powered by artificial intelligence and available around the clock, similar to Woebot. But instead of scripted responses, X2AI's tool, named Tess, acts as a sort of liaison between therapists and patients."Normally a therapist will see five patients per day and spend the rest of their time on administrative work. What we allow them to do is look after 50 patients per day. Because while they're chatting with their patients, Tess is chatting with their other patients," Michiel Rauws, the <a href="https://x2.ai/">co-founder and CEO of X2AI</a>, told Business Insider.If a customer suffers from panic attacks that tend to happen more often on Sunday nights, Tess might reach out proactively via text to see how that person is doing, Rauws said, then report the outcome to the person's therapist. Like Woebot, the service isn't meant to replace traditional therapy, but rather to supplement it. The way Darcy sees it, the more new tools like this there are, the better.<h2>Uncharted waters</h2>It's not yet clear whether Woebot will make any noticeable, long term difference for users' mental heath. In academia, researchers study potential ways to help people with mental illness for years before offering a safe and tested intervention that works. Silicon Valley's tendency is to get the technology to a large group of people quickly, then see if it helped. "There's a real divide between the very in-depth analyses of academia, where it's very slow, and it's hard to figure out how to scale up, versus the startup world - where a lot of these ventures are being produced - which is rapid iteration and that's their business model," <a href="http://profiles.ucsf.edu/matthew.hirschtritt">Matthew Hirschtritt</a>, a resident psychiatrist at the University of California, San Francisco, told Business Insider. "That makes a lot of sense putting it out and seeing if it works, and if it doesn't try something new. But it's hard to fit that alongside the academic setting where you do these rigorous analyses on small groups and then slowly get larger."But the untested nature of mental-health apps is not the biggest risk users face.<h2>'We wanted to be completely anonymous'</h2>As the landscape of digital therapy grows, the biggest concern many users have is privacy.When Woebot launched on Facebook Messenger in October 2017, the medium garnered several thousand users from around the world. But many customers reported to the company that they weren't comfortable sharing intimate data over Facebook's platform, which <a href="https://www.recode.net/2016/7/8/12126764/facebook-messenger-encryption-disappearing-messages-security-update">has faced privacy issues before</a>.So in January, Woebot moved away from Facebook and launched as a stand-alone app that only requires a first name to sign up - meaning the app is anonymous, according to Darcy. Giving feedback on the app is also anonymous, she said; even if a customer emails Woebot directly with a concern or suggestion, their email address is not linked to their user profile. Customers can also ask Woebot to delete their account history, wiping all past conversations.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Woebot</div></div></div>"From our company perspective we have very little data on anybody," Darcy said. "We sort of cut ourselves off from that. Even when people email us, we're like, 'We don't know who you are!' That was a really clear decision from the outset. We wanted to be completely anonymous."But in the world of mental health, total anonymity can be a double-edged sword. In the fall of 2016, a therapist who had been employed by the platform Talkspace, an app that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-its-like-to-use-talkspace-2016-4">connects people to licensed therapists over text message</a>, alleged that the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2016/12/19/14004442/talkspace-therapy-app-reviews-patient-safety-privacy-liability-online">company had violated public safety</a> by keeping the contact information of a potentially dangerous patient anonymous. Talkspace subsequently rewrote its confidentiality policy, stating that if a therapist believes patients are a danger to themselves or others, they should ask the patient for their contact information.If a Woebot user's words indicate that they might have suicidal or potentially harmful thoughts, the app will flag it and go into what Darcy calls crisis mode. In that case, Woebot will respond with a message explaining what triggered crisis mode and why the situation is beyond the scope of what the app is equipped to handle, Darcy said. Then Woebot will send a list of resources including emergency phone numbers and a link to Tec-Tec, one of the only apps that's been clinically shown to help reduce <a href="http://psytaplab.com/tec-sui/">suicidal thinking</a> and <a href="http://psytaplab.com/tec-nssi/">self-harm</a>.That approach to emergency situations is fairly standard for emerging mental health apps, but it's much less comprehensive than what you'd get with an in-person therapist. If patients voice threats of violence against themselves or others to an in-person therapist, the provider is <a href="http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/confidentiality.aspx">legally obligated to break confidentiality and intervene</a>. This can involve reporting the patient to the authorities and, in extreme cases, even institutionalizing them."With situations like child abuse you can't just say, 'Here, call this line,'" Liu said. "In a clinical setting that would be unacceptable."Because Woebot is not a replacement for traditional therapy, it will inevitably fall short for many people. But the app is also likely to help some others - probably tech-savvy individuals who are new to therapy, people in remote areas with no access to traditional therapy, and those who are already in therapy but need some additional help. "If anything it could be preventive for some people," Liu said.
