He will take over as the Senior Director for Central Sales Controlling (Global). Balbir Singh Dhillon, who is currently the head of Dealer Development in Audi, will take on the role of India Head by September 2019. “Rahil’s strong business acumen has been highly acknowledged in the headquarters, which is why he has been offered such a senior position,” said Michael Frisch, Vice President Region Overseas AUDI AG. Ansari has been with Audi since February 2017.

However, the company is now counting on India’s Electric Vehicle push to regain ground. Audi India <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/auto/car-news/audi-e-tron-to-be-launched-in-india-later-this-year-200-units-expected-to-be-sold/1623796/">confirmed </a>that its e-tron SUV will soon be launched in India, and is expecting to sell over 200 units. “My singular focus will be on taking Audi ahead in a sustainable and profitable manner with delight for all our stakeholders in addition to customers. I look forward to build on that foundation as we move towards an era of electrification and digitalisation in India,” said Dhillon in a statement.

Diesel, the once preferred fuel for luxury carmakers in India is taking a backseat as the NCR diesel ban as well as a macro shift towards cleaner fuels is driving OEMs to tweak their product portfolio. <keyword id="6363321" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Audi">Audi</keyword> currently has a variant mix of 70% diesel and 30% petrol which the company sees growing to 35% to 40% in 2018. The share of petrol in 2015 was a mere 10% in its overall vehicles portfolio. Delhi-NCR saw an early switch to more petrol in 2015 itself when the Diesel ban was carried out, taking the share of petrol in that market to 50%, the company is seeing the demand for petrol growing in some unexpected markets. “By 2020 we wish to have an equal share of 50% diesel and 50% alternative fuels which will have petrol at the minimum and hopefully at some stage, an Environmental Vehicle(EV) also,” <keyword id="3965053" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rahil-ansari">Rahil Ansari</keyword>, brand director at <keyword id="148913" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="audi-india">Audi India</keyword> said at the launch of the petrol-based <keyword id="47099" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Audi-Q7">Audi Q7</keyword> 40 TFSI <keyword id="220394" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="quattro">Quattro</keyword>. “Surprisingly in the South, which is a strict diesel market, we are seeing a shift towards petrol taking place which is interesting,” said <keyword id="11700" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ansari">Ansari</keyword>. The share of petrol in Mumbai is around 20%. However, even though the company plans to set aside half of its offering strictly for alternative fuels that may include EVs also, it will wait for the charging infrastructure in India to firm up before it makes a commitment for an EV launch in the country.

Sale of luxury cars is increasing, with manufacturers predicting volume to grow in double digits in the coming time, thanks to the unexpected boost that goods and services tax (GST) will provide. It was in 2016 that the sales of cars and SUVs priced between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 2 crore had fallen for the first time, because of the ban imposed on the sale of large diesel vehicles in and around Delhi in the earlier part of the year and demonetisation later. However, for 2017, industry insiders predict that sales will swell as much as 15%, thus overpowering the overall automotive industry. Lobby group <keyword id="82374" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Society-of-Indian-Automobile-Manufacturers">Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers</keyword>, however, predicts that sales would increase from 7 to 9%. The reason why GST will boost the sale of luxury cars is the difference in taxes that have to be paid. Presently, luxury vehicles attract taxes as high as 55%, which includes taxes paid to the centre, state and the city. However, once GST is implemented, these taxes would fall to 43%, including a 15% luxury cess. Even though the change in taxes would be implemented from July 1, luxury carmaker companies decided to cut prices by as much as Rs 11lakh immediately after the <keyword id="6355040" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST-Council">GST Council</keyword> announced the rates late last month. The gamble was played so that potential buyers who were waiting for GST to be implemented could be attracted. "We have seen a lot of consumer interest as we passed on the GST benefits to end-customers... There has been a substantial increase in queries," <keyword id="2981742" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Roland-Folger">Roland Folger</keyword>, MD at <keyword id="184004" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mercedes-Benz-India">Mercedes-Benz India</keyword>, told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/auto/news/industry/luxury-car-sales-may-surge-ahead-on-lower-tax-rate-under-gst/articleshow/59026298.cms">ET</a>. "2016 was a year of disruption and lost opportunities. The first five months of the year (2017) have gone on according to plan and there is no reason so far why we can't make up in 2017." <keyword id="148913" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Audi-India">Audi India</keyword> head <keyword id="3965053" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="rahil-ansari">Rahil Ansari</keyword> also said that as per the feedback received from the market, "we do feel a comeback is imminent and growth may very well be in double digits." "The benefits have been well-received and our dealers are experiencing higher footfalls and good conversions in sales," said Ansari.

GST might boost luxury car sales

E-Tron is Audi’s first fully electric car, and is expected to launch in India by 2020. But the German luxury carmaker took a few Indian customers abroad to see the car, and they were so excited about it that they wanted to buy it. However, the company refused since it was too premature to accept down payment on a car, before they could announce the launch date. “We said this is too premature, we cannot do this at the moment. But that’s a good sign,” Rahil Ansari, Managing Director, Audi India told Business Insider. The Multiplier effect The <keyword id="906440" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Audi-e-tron">Audi E-Tron</keyword> family is a series of electric and hybrid concept cars. The first one came out in 2009. Audi unveiled a plug-in hybrid version, the A3 Sportback E-Tron in 2012, and launched it for retail customers in Europe, in August 2014. A decade after the unveiling of the E-Tron concept, Audi's first fully electric E-Tron Quattro has gone into production this year. “We took only 10 (Indian) customers to Germany to have a look at it. And to get that kind of response already, there’s of course a multiplication effect to. It’s pretty good,” Ansari added. Production line troubles Audi is reportedly facing troubles in E-Tron production due to <a href="https://insideevs.com/news/345863/audi-e-tron-production-stalls-out-e-tron-sportback-delayed/">shortage of lithium-ion batteries</a>. This could be the reason why they are delaying sales of this futuristic car, which was unveiled amid much fanfare last year. The searches for E-Tron from India have spiked since mid April. Most people want to know the price and launch date for the model. The Future is fast Ansari believes that this model that will work well in India. “If you look at the range of the local cars, it’s typically between 90 and 120 kilometres (per charge). Maybe, in the future, it will be 200-250 kilometres. But the E-Tron has already surpassed this,” he said. According to Audi, the E-Tron will be able to offer 400 kilometres per charge. Audi claims it had to decline bookings for E-Tron from India even before Iron Man showed up in it

The Indian government is planning to increase the cess on large vehicles and if implemented, it may hurt the luxury car market. The luxury car market, which was upbeat about lower GST rate on large vehicles, may see a steep fall in sales if the cess is increased. The demand was increasing due to lower <keyword id="3808420" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="gst-on-luxury-cars">GST on luxury cars</keyword> but the decision of the <keyword id="6355040" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="gst-council">GST Council</keyword> to increase the cess from 15% to 25% will take the total tax incidence to 53%, hurting the segment’s dream of double digit growth. Rahil Ansari, director for the <keyword id="6363321" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Audi">Audi</keyword> brand in India, told ET the company had budgeted for double-digit growth, but now it may be the opposite. "I am not sure what the main factors behind the change in rates are ... If the cess were to go up by 10%, then we expect a double digit decline in sales, probably around 20%," said Ansari. <keyword id="25952" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mercedes-Benz">Mercedes-Benz</keyword>, Audi and <keyword id="6355119" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMW">BMW</keyword> had forecast double-digit growth, post GST but higher cess has thrown a spanner in their plans. Revenue from JLR fell by a billion dollars in the year ending March 2019 and made profit in only one of the four quarters last year. Last year, Tata Motors had to take an impairment-- write down the value-- of ₹27,838 crore due to weak sales and profitability at JLR. Things continue to look bleak even after 4,500 jobs were axed. This posed a question in front of N Chandrasekharan, the Chairman of the group's parent Tata Sons, on how long will the conglomerate continue to back the bleeding giant. "A company cannot shut the cash tap as the very nature of this business demands continuous investment in product and technology development," he <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/auto/cars-jaguar-land-rover-looking-for-financial-partnership-in-china-tata-chairman-n-chandrasekaran-539207" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">reportedly</a> said at the Annual General Meeting. "There are many discussions from tactical to strategic for such partnerships. Opportunities are coming and we keep evaluating them and as long as it is in the interest of Tata Motors. We will forge such partnerships so that we are able to address the capex issue," he told the shareholders. Tata Motors has already joined hands with German giant and rival BMW recently for a collaboration for manufacturing electric vehicles under the JLR banner.  Any recovery for the JLR hinges a lot on how Brexit unfolds. “Uncertainty around an orderly outcome of Brexit negotiations and the evolving global tariffs situation pose risks, in particular to TML's JLR business, which faces a significant level of production-sales mismatch due to concentration of its production base in the UK,” global ratings agency Fitch said while downgrading Tata Motors for JLR's troubles. Aside from Brexit, the US-China trade war and <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/tata-motors-mulls-selling-stake-in-jlr-agencies/articleshow/68216938.cms">signs</a> of a slowdown in the global economy are also compounding JLR's problems. China has traditionally been one of the biggest markets for the luxury car but sale volumes fell a sharp 29% between April and June this year, compared to the same time last year. A month back, credit rating agency Moody’s had downgraded Tata Motors. In addition to JLR related troubles, Tata Motors’ domestic business is also troubled by a general slowdown in the auto market. In June 2019, Tata Motors <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/companies/tata-motors-global-sales-dip-5-in-june-4195251.html">reported </a>a 14% decline in India sales, while a 5% drop was seen in global sales. Tata Motors is looking for partnerships to revive Jaguar Land Rover

 <keyword id="6363321" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Audi">Audi</keyword> India Head Rahil Ansari said, "It is just the beginning of a very exciting line up of new and improved vehicles that we plan to unveil in 2017. The new Audi A3 Cabriolet perfectly truly reflects 'luxury without compromise'." 
 
The hood can be raised or lowered even at speeds up to 50kmph. 
 
Meanwhile, Audi A3 Cabriolet was first showcased in India in 2014 and had received an overwhelming response from young and young-at-heart customers. 
 
Among the new features, the A3 Cabriolet also has newly redesigned rear lights with a distinctive tail light configuration and dynamic turn signals are installed in the LED rear lights, it added.

Passenger vehicle sales in India have been on a downtrend for seven months now and June 2019 may be no different. A research report released two days before the monthly auto sales data projects another month of falling car sales, ahead of the actual monthly automobile sales data that will be released on Monday (July 1). "Our channel checks suggest that footfalls have dried up and only those OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) who have launched new models recently are getting some response from customers, " Nirmal Bang Institutional Equities said.  Consumer sentiment has suffered due to cost increase amid strict safety regulations, delay in monsoon, rural stress, slowing economy and liquidity constraints are weighing down car sales. But stocks of Maruti and M&amp;M seem bored of falling as investors have rued the declining fortunes for quite sometime now.  Luxury car makers have had it even tougher. 2018 was a bad year and the outlook is no better for the next couple of years. "2019 is going to be a challenging year. The next two years is not going to be easy for the overall luxury segment. While I do believe that sentiment will change in the second half of the year, it does not mean there is going to be a major increase, unless there are any drastic changes, any crucial changes that are related, again, to structures of taxes and duties," Rahil Ansari, Managing Director of Audi India, told Business Insider earlier. Audi is planning to launch three new models this year, the R8, A8, and the Q8, in India. But, the German car maker is not expecting the cars to fly off the showroooms.  The new axle-load norms rolled out in August 2018 allowed Indian trucks to carry about 20% more payload than earlier. Transporters re-registered their trucks with the Regional Transport Office to carry more stuff. This means there is a need for fewer trucks leading to an oversupply in the industry.
