The menace of ragging continues to haunt students in some institutions in <keyword id="13104" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="telugu" source="Orion">Telugu</keyword> states as in the latest case in Andhra Pradesh, 18 students of <keyword id="6034800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jntu-anantapur" source="Orion">JNTU Anantapur</keyword> have been suspended for <keyword id="1325638" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ragging-juniors" source="Orion">ragging juniors</keyword>. The College Academic Council of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (<keyword id="99885" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jntu" source="Orion">JNTU</keyword>) suspended students of Anantapur Engineering College for forcibly taking some freshers to their hostel. The juniors were allegedly forced to stand half-naked and follow orders of the seniors. The incident took place on Friday night but came to light a day later. The college authorities learnt about ragging when a parent of one of the first-year students complained. The college authorities came to know that some first-year students were taken to <keyword id="13120357" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gurukula-hostel" source="Orion">Gurukula Hostel</keyword>, the hostel of seniors. When questioned by the college principal, the freshers revealed how they were ragged by the seniors. Taking a serious note of the incident, the College Academic Council suspended 18 students of the second year found involved in the ragging from academics and hostel. The Council began a detailed inquiry on Monday to ascertain facts from the victims and other students for further action. Police also took suo-moto note of the ragging incident and began a probe. According to Anantapur Superintendent of Police Fakkerappa Kaginelli, the police have not received any complaint but they took suo-moto cognizance and deputed a DSP-rank officer to probe the incident. This is the second incident of ragging in the government-run institutions in the Telugu states in the last one month. Six students of a government medical college in Telangana's Suryapet were suspended for one year for ragging a junior student last month. Second year MBBS students of the Government Medical College Suryapet were punished after they were found involved. They were also arrested by the police under the Anti-Ragging Act. The police rescued the junior student Sai Kumar after receiving a call that some senior students were ragging him in the Boys hostel of the college. The complainant alleged that a group of students came to his room, ordered him to take off his clothes and took video shots of him in their mobile phones. They also tried to cut his hair. The victim said he was physically and mentally tortured for two hours. He later managed to escape from them and called up his father after hiding in another room. Over 18 students of Andhra Pradesh's JNTU college suspended for ragging juniors

It was a crystal clear spring day with gusty winds, and my neighbor informed me that my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-brooklyn-apartment-rent-renvation-before-after-photos-2023-11">Brooklyn apartment</a> — and home of 10 years — was on fire.I bolted from the desk where I <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-quit-being-an-influencer-to-enter-the-corporate-workforce-2023-10">worked in marketing</a> for a SoHo startup, breathing in ragged gulps, thinking of my cat Crackers trapped inside. <div type="image" title="Brooklyn building" height="3024" width="4032" msid="113698808" hostid="261" sizebytes="1244282"></div>Off the train, I jogged up the hill, where I spotted a crowd, eyes to the sky. Thick smoke billowed out of the windows of the six-story brick building, the anchor on the corner since 1931. Sirens wailed as the entire roof and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-not-to-do-in-a-fire-2019-7">top floor turned to ash</a>.<h2 id="bd29d7f7-7103-4ff8-a644-f02bafddc7b5">I bought my apartment in my late 20s</h2>I <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sunset-park-brooklyn-home-prices-restaurants-tour-2017-10">moved to Sunset Park</a>, a middle- and working-class neighborhood in South Brooklyn, in 2002 while I was in college. It encapsulated much of what I'd left Maine for New York to find: cultural diversity, grassroots activism, vibrant urbanism, and a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline. There was nowhere else I'd rather live.<div type="image" title="Home office" height="3024" width="4032" msid="113698815" hostid="261" sizebytes="545080"></div>In 2009, in my late 20s, I was able to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-to-do-with-your-money-in-your-20s-2017-4">purchase an apartment</a> in my beloved neighborhood, a privilege I recognize was out of reach for many. When I moved into the junior two-bedroom with original parquet floors and golden western light, I felt I'd stepped into a secure future. I held <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/making-friends-as-an-adult-stranger-dinner-party-review-2023-10">dinner parties</a> around the blonde wood kitchen table. I filled the living room with legal education sessions for immigrant neighbors and fundraisers for local organizers. Daily, I sat on the fire escape to admire the sunset. For a decade, the apartment was my refuge, and in a flash, it was gone.<h2 id="8a117c13-9476-47cc-9781-a7e3e6664c3f">I cremated my cat and temporarily moved blocks away</h2>In the aftermath, I launched into action. I paid $200 to cremate my cat and have her remains delivered to my office in a plain cardboard box. I explained to the gas company why a final meter reading was impossible. I moved into a temporary rental nine blocks away. I spent hours on the phone with my insurance agent, learning the technical meaning of "total loss." I filled out a spreadsheet calculating the value of my destroyed items, soothed by the order of neat lines, columns, and numbers. I was grateful for my personal property coverage, but I soon found that many of my neighbors had no insurance at all, and the condo board woefully underinsured the building as a whole. A payment for the full value of our homes was unlikely.Once I'd checked all the bureaucratic boxes, I was forced to confront my loss. <h2 id="4877f986-6cf6-4a9c-9962-d99d9df0af91">My friends and family supported me</h2>While I was sinking into grief, my community threw me a lifeline. Fellow building members shared support and commiseration via group text as we scattered across the city. My parents hastily arranged a visit. Neighbors organized a collective fundraiser and benefit concert. A colleague insisted I couldn't have a new home without books, and mobilized other writers to help me replace my favorites. My old classmate's father sent me a pressure cooker. An ex replaced my gym shoes. Coworkers brought food to my door. The library forgave fines for destroyed books and hosted a communal dinner. At the gathering, Father Kevin, a local Irish Catholic priest who said Spanish mass, gave a blessing for our departed pets. A committed agnostic, I was grateful for this ritual, knowing my Catholic grandmother would have been proud.My friends helped me salvage my life so I could look towards what was next. In disposable coveralls, hard hats, and N95 masks to protect from any asbestos from the burnt roof, they carried my father's mid-century desk, crates of records, and a still living fiddle leaf fig tree down five flights of sooty stairs. I swore I wouldn't get another cat, but another found a rescue that resembled the pet I'd lost. A few days later, Biscuit and I stared at each other, wondering what we were both doing in this new living arrangement.After the fire, I realized that support comes to us when we need it through the relationships we've built and invested in. Now in my 40s, I've moved to rural Southern California because it's no longer financially feasible for me to live in New York. However, when I think of my Brooklyn home, I don't only see a charred husk or a future I lost, but the web of people that held me and helped me heal.

Workers looking for a retail job will almost certainly consider a job with Target, which, in recent years, has been a leader in raising the standard for hourly roles in the industry.Last year, the company announced its starting wage would range from <a href="https://corporate.target.com/article/2022/02/team-investments" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$15 to $24 per hour</a>, depending on the position, and that the hours needed for full-time status would be reduced from 30 to 25.It also offers <a href="https://corporate.target.com/careers/benefits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">benefits</a> for hourly workers that the company says support employees' mental, physical, and financial health, as well as care for their families and even their pets.The bull's-eye brand ranks 26th on Fortune's <a href="https://fortune.com/ranking/best-companies/2023/search/?bestcos_industry=Retail" target="_blank" rel="noopener">100 Best Companies to Work For</a> in 2023, and is the only big-box retailer to make the list. In the retail category, Target comes in second after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wegmans-tour-photos-i-saw-why-its-so-popular-2022-12">Wegman's, the beloved regional-grocery chain</a>.But as attractive as the incentives may be for new applicants, some Target workers say the daily realities of working for the company can make those perks lose their luster.Insider spoke with more than a dozen current and former Target employees in eight states across the US who voiced similar themes regarding the pros and cons of working for the company. The sources requested anonymity due to concerns about professional repercussions, as they are not authorized to speak to the media. Insider has verified their identities.Kayla Castañeda, the spokesperson for Target, declined to respond to specific questions for this piece but did provide links to company websites and the following statement:"We have a track record of providing market-leading benefits and providing all team members with a work experience that centers on equitable opportunities to build meaningful careers and experience success at all levels," the statement reads. "We repeatedly rank as one of the best places to work in the country and are proud to be nationally recognized for our competitive starting wage, accessible healthcare benefits, and opportunities for growth."<h2>1. The wage is high, but the demands are higher</h2>Target was years ahead of its peers in implementing a $15 starting wage for its employees, and the company's <a href="https://research.alpha-sense.com/?docid=ESG-cr14717127&amp;k=average%20wage&amp;stmt=fse120953&amp;page=35&amp;slop=15&amp;scope=ANYWHERE&amp;hl=fse120953&amp;utm_source=alphasense%20platform&amp;utm_medium=document%20share&amp;utm_content=ESG-cr14717127&amp;utm_campaign=1680290894919" target="_blank" rel="noopener">average hourly pay</a> today is about $17 an hour. While that's more than <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/highest-paid-retail-jobs-in-the-us-2019-6">most hourly jobs pay</a> in many markets, some workers say their responsibilities and expectations go beyond those of a typical retail job.Most employees, including back-room workers and department managers, must be well-versed in ringing up cash-register transactions and able to lift and move merchandise up to 40 pounds, according to job descriptions and conversations with workers. Most workers who spoke to Insider said that managers often pull them from one task to another to support a lean-staffing model.<div type="image" title="Most workers who spoke to Insider said that they often get pulled from one task to another to support a lean-staffing model." height="3030" width="4041" msid="99561316" hostid="261"></div>Additionally, all the workers Insider spoke with agreed that the company's interest in tracking metrics on activities from restocking and repricing to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/target-employees-dreading-arrival-of-drive-up-returns-2023-3">drive-up-order fulfillment</a> can increase the pressure on workers."I feel like they're just trying to squeeze us out of a rag when it comes to hours and work efficiency, where we'll work as thin as possible to achieve the metrics that we're supposed to be achieving," a Target worker in Northern California said.Some workers fear that those demands are only increasing as new services like drive-up returns and Starbucks-order pickup begin rolling out. <h2>2. Available benefits are nice, but accessing them can be challenging</h2>The company provides a <a href="https://corporate.target.com/article/2022/09/dream-to-be-anniversary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">substantial education benefit</a>, which Caroline Hogan, a team lead in Michigan, said she is using to pursue an MBA. "It's all online classes, which works for people like me," Hogan said. Target says more than 75,000 employees signed up for the service in its first year. But two undergraduate employees in Minnesota said the 250 "business-aligned" academic programs felt limited and aren't aligned with their educational goals.The Minnesota workers also pointed out that the 25-hour threshold for full-time employee status — while far lower than the typical 35-hour requirement — can still be hard to meet with irregular scheduling. The company's benefits website says hourly workers' benefit eligibility is reviewed annually and averaged over the prior twelve months.As a result, workers transitioning from part-time to full-time hours may not be eligible for certain benefits until they've worked enough full-time hours to compensate for their prior schedule.<h2>3. Being a Guest is great, but some guests take that too far</h2>Most of the sources Insider spoke with said a big reason they sought a job at Target was that they love shopping there — and they still do.A former Target worker in Minnesota said she especially misses the employee discount — 10% off everything and an additional 20% off private-label brands and fresh groceries — that would save her roughly $50 to $60 on groceries each week.<div type="image" title="A majority of the sources Insider spoke with said a big reason they sought a job at Target was that they love shopping there — and they still do." height="1338" width="1784" msid="99561318" hostid="261"></div>Target takes great pride in delighting its guests, but satisfying some customers <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/target-workers-say-companys-deference-to-customers-goes-too-far-2023-3">can leave workers feeling demoralized</a> and degraded, with little recourse for customers' poor behavior."When you welcome someone into your home, there's a level of respect on both ends — as a guest, you are very respectful of that person's house," a worker in Southern California said. "Instead of creating that mutual-respect environment, some people fall into a little bit of a power trip and see us not as employees, but as their personal servants.""The eggshells that we walk on is incredible at Target, and what sometimes you have to tell the guests is, 'No,'" a worker in Texas said. "Sometimes the guest is wrong."<h2>4. It really is 'the best team in retail,' but great colleagues aren't staying</h2>Target executives like to say the company has "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/target-says-no-worker-cuts-as-it-looks-for-savings-2023-3">the best team in retail</a>," and nearly all of the sources Insider spoke with said their teammates were one of the top three best things about working for the company — if not the best thing."It sounds corny, but it does help me get through my day," one of the current Minnesota workers said. "I'd say that's probably the biggest reason I'm working here is that I've built outstanding relationships."The company employs over 400,000 people and its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-target-kroger-in-labor-hoarding-war-for-workers-2023-3">ability to attract</a> talented and thoughtful workers, combined with the intensity of the job, fosters a deep sense of camaraderie among the team members, many of the employees Insider spoke to said.But mounting challenges in recent years appear to be leading more of these <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retail-worker-quits-are-on-the-rise-again-even-as-stores-sweeten-wages-2023-3">workers to leave</a>."Our turnover rate is ridiculous now," a manager in the Midwest said.Despite the company's statements about growing careers within the company, several workers said they could see few avenues for promotion or advancement and that there is an apparent preference for outside hires to fill store-leadership roles."What I've seen with Target is that people tend to get stuck, and it's hard to move up," a worker in Southern California said. "And then above a Team Lead? That's just seen as a fairy tale."The former employee in Minnesota said she worked for the company for four years, including several months of training, to advance to a leadership role. When a junior employee that she had trained was promoted over her, she quit."That really pushed my hand to say, 'OK, you know what? The prime minister is under fresh pressure after losing Wakefield to Labour and Tiverton &amp; Honiton to the Liberal Democrats — the latter being the largest Conservative majority overturned at a by-election.One backbencher said colleagues were giving Johnson "time to fail" before moving against him in a more coordinated fashion, after rebels <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boris-johnson-survives-leadership-vote-with-majority-of-just-63-2022-6">failed to oust him</a> in a vote of no confidence earlier this month."He will be fine until after Conference," the MP added. "I think Cabinet knows it has to happen but lack the stomach or gumption and want to let the '22 do it," he added, referencing the 1922 committee of Conservative backbenchers.At the weekend, former minister and chair of the One Nation caucus, Damian Green, called for ministers to move against Johnson. Writing in <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/06/25/ministers-leadership-ambitions-should-move-against-boris-johnson/">The Sunday Telegraph</a>, Green said: "It is not a secret that a significant proportion of the Cabinet think they could do a better job of leading the country than the incumbent. However, one MP said: "If there is no reshuffle in July, there won't be one as he will be too weak."Another simply sent a carrot emoji — an allusion to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boris-johnson-mulls-summer-reshuffle-to-gain-control-after-partygate-2022-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">comments previously reported by Insider that a reshuffle was a ruse to win over the "gullible."</a>Johnson's response to the by-election result has also prompted more criticism. The prime minister shrugged off suggestions that it had weakened his grip on power, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uk-pm-johnson-vows-lead-conservatives-next-election-2022-06-25/">saying over the weekend that he was "actively thinking" about staying for three terms, taking him to the "mid-2030s."</a>Two sources, both Conservative MPs, also told Insider that Downing Street is looking to stack the executive of the 1922 committee — which can determine whether to change current rules and allow a further confidence vote before the 12-month grace period — by putting forward loyalists at the election next month. However, Johnson critics, <a href="https://www.politico.eu/article/boris-johnson-uk-the-secret-election-that-holds-pm-fate-in-the-balance/">including Steve Baker</a>, have already indicated they will stand for election. Insider is aware of at least one other rebel who is considering doing so — and the move to impose "stooges" may prompt more, sources said."No 10 briefing out that they will run a slate is a red rag," one Tory said.Another said: "It's all very defensive. The govt purpose seems simply to shore up the PM — nothing else."Sources say Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 committee, is not expected to be targeted by the prime minister's team after they unsuccessfully backed the Johnson loyalist Heather Wheeler to take the reins in <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/graham-brady-downing-street-mps-conservative-government-b944589.html">last year's committee election</a>.On Friday, several Tory grandees publicly called for their colleagues to dump Johnson.Former Conservative Party leader Michael Howard told the BBC: "I think the party, and even more importantly the country, would now be better off under new leadership."He called for the 1922 committee to consider changing the rules so that a new leadership vote, despite Johnson having narrowly won during a recent challenge.Cabinet ministers should also "very carefully consider their positions, as Oliver Dowden has done," Howard said. Dowden resigned as Conservative Party chairman early in the morning of the by-election results, saying "somebody must take responsibility."Malcolm Rifkind, who served in Margaret Thatcher's final Cabinet, said Johnson could be brought down by a dozen junior ministers. There is something common between the founder of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-Man-behind-Tu-Beer-Hai/articleshow/51024338.cms">Youtube Channel TVF</a> (The Viral Fever) <keyword id="1362593" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arunabh-Kumar">Arunabh Kumar</keyword> and <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> CEO <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Google-CEO-Sundar-Pichai-unlocks-digital-initiative-for-small-and-medium-businesses-in-India/articleshow/56329943.cms">Sundar Pichai</a>. Both are alumni of <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword>, in fact Pichai was Kumar's hostel senior. 
 
Arunabh was invited by IIT-KGP to greet and host the Google CEO, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/googles-sundar-pichai-is-in-india-and-here-are-the-details-of-his-itinerary/articleshow/56215301.cms">who was revisiting his alma mater after two decades</a>, for a tour of their hostel. 
 
It was a rather nostalgic moment for Pichai and Kumar both. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/20-top-quotes-from-google-ceo-sundar-pichai-interaction-at-iit-kharagpur/articleshow/56355832.cms">Pichai </a>visited his room in the hostel, and a place called 'Catwalk' where juniors were ragged. 
 The duo broke into laughter remembering the <keyword id="4060787" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Waterfall-Tradition">Waterfall Tradition</keyword> at the hostel. As a part of this tradition, an entire batch of freshers were gathered for a serious task, only to be showered with buckets of water from the top. 
 
Kumar, who has been working closely with Google and Youtube, made a rather smart move when he met Pichai. He reportedly requested the Google CEO to do a guest appearance in TVF Pitchers. 
 
"I never thought I will get to meet someone that I idolise so closely. It definitely has to be one of the most awesome moments of my life and will cherish it forever." he said. 
 
We will have to wait to see if Pichai accepted that humble offer from his junior or not, but if he does, that is going to be one killer episode!

I was born in Lewisham Hospital and spent most of my younger days moving between there and Peckham. I grew up where the taxi drivers didn't like to travel.It was a single-parent household, with mum raising me and my two younger brothers. She suffered from chronic muscular dystrophy, which meant I was effectively her carer from the age of 11.I would dress my brothers, take them to school, bring them home, cook dinner some nights. Thinking back on it, I couldn't imagine placing that much responsibility on my kids today. It was just "normal" for us, I suppose.Did you go to university?At that time, I wasn't looking into furthering my education.Although I think I would have been capable, at that time I had aspirations to be a professional football player. I signed a contract with Crystal Palace and thought I was set for life.What happened?I got injured just before my contract came up for renewal and it all fell apart. If I'm honest, I don't think I would have made it anyway. But at the time I was devastated.I was very careless with money, as you might expect a young footballer to be, and found myself in a lot of debt.My agent got me a job in a call centre, working for Motorola, while we looked for other clubs for me to play for. I cried and cried for weeks.That's a lot to deal with. But it looks like you made the best of a bad situation?It took time but I slowly got my head around the situation.The office culture could be a bit demanding at times but I was already used to football managers losing their rag at me, so I could deal with it.I just kept my head down and worked really hard, quickly climbing the ladder. At the first opportunity, I left to join a telecoms startup, and I've been headhunted for almost every job I've had since.It sounds like you learned pretty much everything on the job?Absolutely. Those first few jobs were incredibly important for me - just being able to see how everything works from the inside and how you build a business up.I had a very strong work ethic and I just knew that I had to pull every lever and turn every dial to make it happen for me.Have you ever felt alienated as a result of your background?I've had a handful of moments. There have been occasions where I would go for meetings, and I would be with an older, usually white, colleague. And the person we're meeting might assume I'm the junior person in the room, despite that not being the case.In some ways, that has helped me. I haven't had many experiences of people actually being uncomfortable with my experience, but I have more often been paranoid that would be the case.But because of that, I always make sure I am the best-briefed person in the room. I play out every scenario before I go into a meeting, because I need to make sure people know I'm not messing around.Do you think more can be done to help kids with a background like yours get into tech?One hundred per cent.My wife and I have put a lot of time and money into this. We run Project 10, an organisation that takes people from backgrounds like ours, and helps them develop in-work skills: office etiquette, punctuality, dress code and so on. From there, we help them get work experience opportunities.I think more needs to happen to bridge the gap between the poor and the privileged. A startup CEO who grew up caring for his siblings and disabled mother reveals his tough journey breaking into tech

She landed at Intel straight from college, and has spent her whole 31-year career with the chipmaker.When she started at Intel, in 1985, she was a young woman in a man's world, and they weren't thrilled to have her."I was truly a minority as a woman inside the tech industry and it was a very rough and tumble era," Bryant said at <a href="http://www.fortuneconferences.com/most-powerful-women-summit-2016/2016-agenda-overview/">Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit on Wednesday</a>."I had to play like the boys," she says. "It doesn't help to be in the outer circle. You are never going to have impact from the outside. Somehow you have to get to the inside. And as a minority, you need to be willing to admit: I'm a minority. I need to change the way I act and operate, if I'm going to get to the inside and I'm going to have an impact."She adds, "To those who say that's being a sell-out, or you are not being who you are, I say, it's better to be in the game than sitting on the bench." <h2>She needed to un-clean-up her language.</h2>"The first thing I did was I started swearing a lot. A lot," she told the audience, who roared with laughter."And I'm not kidding. The worst experience, I'm a junior engineer, sitting in a conference with all older men, all white men, and this one guy throws out the f-word and then stops and turns to me, so all eyes are on me, 23 years old, and says, 'Oh, I'm sorry.' And I said, 'No, f*&amp;ing problem.'" The audience laughed again."And then I would throw out the f-word every now and then, just randomly. And it was hard. I actually had to concentrate, like, 'Swear now! Now! She was sitting in a math class, when a guy asked her what her major was. She hadn't declared one, and he told her, "You should become an engineer. It's the highest starting salary you can get with a four-year degree."She immediately went to the school counselor and declared her major as engineering. When asked her if she would study software engineering or hardware, she chose software, since she thought "soft" sounded easier than "hard." Intel's Diane Bryant just told a hilarious story about learning to swear at work

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/storm-clouds-over-new-york-city-554983489?src=oQYSLppfkzKx-p5pT7eHXQ-1-40">Shutterstock/Colin Dewar</a></div></div></div><ul><li>The global economy is growing and corporate defaults are low and projected to drop even further.</li><li>Yet the Wall Street investment bankers who feast during recessions are optimistic about their business, and some say it's starting to feel like it did just before the financial crisis.</li><li>Top restructuring firms have been filling out their rosters of talent to be prepared in case of an economic recession.</li><li>Restructuring bankers told Business Insider that a massive amount high-yield debt issued in recent years could produce defaults and keep them busy even without a recession.</li><li>Another source of optimism: The restructuring business has changed since the last financial crisis, with firms finding year-round work across the globe by providing solutions to companies before they get to bankruptcy court.</li></ul> At an earnings call in April, an analyst pressed bank CEO Ken Moelis on his rosy outlook for his firm's restructuring business - the corner of Wall Street known for advising companies with messy books veering toward bankruptcy.For a healthy chunk of his opening commentary, the namesake founder and CEO of independent investment bank Moelis &amp; Co. touted his firm's "market-leading restructuring business" for supplying meaningful activity."Your comments were surprisingly positive," said Ken Worthington, a senior equity analyst with JPMorgan Chase. "Is this sort of steady state for you in a lousy environment? Can things only get better from here?"On the surface, market conditions are showing few signs of distress. (Keep in mind that "worse" from the perspective of a restructuring banker, who feasts during recessions, means "better" for most of the rest of the world). "But I think between 1% and 0% defaults and 1% and 5% defaults, I would bet we hit 5% before we hit 0%."The <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-30/who-is-john-galt-dealmaker-ken-moelis-has-1-000-000-000-answers">billionaire dealmaker</a> isn't alone in his sentiment. Many on Wall Street are scrutinizing cracks in the economy's glossy veneer.JPMorgan copresident and investmen banking head Daniel Pinto <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-investment-bank-ceo-daniel-pinto-says-a-40-correction-could-be-looming-2018-3">told Business Insider in March that a 40% correction</a>, triggered by inflation and rising interest rates, could be looming on the horizon.The market's biggest money managers are already positioning as if a major economic downturn is near, according to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/economic-recession-outlook-fund-managers-freaking-out-defying-baml-2018-5">research this month from Bank of America Merrill Lynch</a>.And while they're quick to note that no one can predict the next collapse, Wall Street's top restructuring bankers are also joining in the chorus cautioning that the economic boom may be on its last legs."I do think we're all feeling like where we were back in 2007," Bill Derrough, the cohead of recapitalization and restructuring at Moelis &amp; Co., told Business Insider. "There was sort of a smell in the air; there were some crazy deals getting done. You just knew it was a matter of time."Business Insider spoke with several top restructuring bankers who were all buoyant on the outlook for their industry, in part because of disconcerting trends facing debt-burdened companies but also because of how the business has changed since the last financial crisis.<h2>Massive debt, rising interest rates, flimsy covenants</h2>The global default rate for weak companies is indeed very low; it climbed in March to 3.9% on the struggles of a handful of retail and oil and gas firms, but it ticked back down to 3% in April and is expected to dip to 1.2% a year from now, according to Moody's.But as Moelis alluded to in his investor call, the amount of high-yield corporate debt - bonds and loans issued to riskier companies - doled out in the US in recent years is at levels far exceeding precrisis highs.Historically, large volumes of high-yield issuance "has led, after a period of time, to an increased level of restructuring," according to Steve Zelin, head of the restructuring in the Americas at PJT Partners.Four of the past five years have seen both high-yield bond and leveraged loan issuance that exceeded 2007's precrisis levels. The Wall Street bankers who feast during recessions say there's a 'smell in the air' and it's starting to feel like 2007

His mother knows. She knows that Mr Tumanov, a 20 year-old junior sergeant in the Russian army, was killed in eastern Ukraine, torn apart in a rocket attack on August 13.
Yelena Tumanova, 41, learned these bare facts about her son's death from one of his comrades, who saw him get hit and scooped up his body.
"What I don't understand is what he died for," she says. "Why couldn't we let people in Ukraine sort things out for themselves? And seeing as our powers sent Anton there, why can't they admit it and tell us exactly what happened to him."
As the year draws to a close, the Kremlin continues to insist that not a single Russian soldier has entered Ukraine to join pro-Moscow separatist militia who have been fighting government forces there since April. During his annual press conference earlier this month, Vladimir Putin, the president, said that all Russian combatants in Ukraine's Donbas region were volunteers answering "a call of the heart".
The story of Mr Tumanov and the shadowy deaths of scores of other Russian servicemen since this summer belie that claim.
Rights activists have recorded cases of at least 40 serving soldiers suspected of dying in the conflict - many believe the figure is in the hundreds - but prosecutors refuse to open criminal investigations into their deaths, a requirement by law.
Denied of status by the lies and obfuscation that muffle their stories, these men and their families are casualties of an undeclared war.
<h3>Cause of injuries "not established"</h3>
Officially, Mr Tumanov died while "carrying out responsibilities of military service" at "a point of temporary deployment of military unit 27777" - part of the army's 18th Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, whose permanent base is in Kalinovskaya, Chechnya.
His death certificate, signed at a defence ministry forensic-medicine centre in Rostov-on-Don in southwest Russia on August 18, records that he died from an "explosion injury", receiving "multiple shrapnel wounds to the lower limbs" that resulted in "acute, massive blood loss". The certificate leaves unticked a box saying the cause of his injuries was "military hostilities", preferring instead "origin not established".
Mrs Tumanova, 41, waited five days for her son's body to be brought home after she received notice of his death. "Five agonising days," she says.
A sanitary inspector, she lives with her husband and Mr Tumanov's two younger brothers on the second floor of a wooden house in Kozmodemyansk, a small, crumpled town by a bend in the Volga, 400 miles east of Moscow.
The sealed zinc coffin containing her son arrived on a Wednesday.
"There was a little window in the top so you could look at his face," she recalls. 'I didn't know then what his injuries were but something in my soul told me he'd lost his legs."
The funeral went ahead the same day. An army band and a few officials from the local military commissariat attended. No one came from Mr Tumanov's unit. His mother spoke to a major in Chechnya by telephone who confirmed the young man had perished in Ukraine, but refused to give any details. The order to go there, "came from above in verbal form only", said the major.

<h3>A search for work leads to war</h3>
Mr Tumanov's biography is not unusual for a provincial lad from a modest family. He was called up to the army as a conscript after school and served eight months in South Ossetia, the pro-Russian breakaway republic in Georgia. When he came home to Kozmodemyansk in spring last year he struggled to find a job. After short stints as a barman and on a building site in Moscow, he decided to return to the forces as a career soldier. In June he was dispatched to Chechnya.
"I tried to persuade him not go to because of what was happening in Ukraine," says Mrs Tumanova. "But our president said that none of our soldiers would be sent there, it's just Ukrainians fighting each other, and I believed that. So in the end I didn't argue."
Mr Tumanov was put on a three month probation but he hadn't been in Chechnya ten days before he and other soldiers at the base were approached and asked if they would go to Donbas to fight as volunteers.
He and his friends refused, he told his mother by telephone. "Who wants to die?" she says. "That was their thinking. Nobody was attacking Russia; if they had been Anton would have been first in the queue."
By the middle of July, things had changed. Now 27777, his regular army unit, was dispatched to a temporary camp in Rostov region, near the border with Ukraine, officially "for exercises".
Soon he was telling Nastya Chernova, his fiancée back in Kozmodemyansk, that he was going on short trips into Ukraine to accompany deliveries of arms and military vehicles to the rebels.
This was the moment when pro-Moscow militia in eastern Ukraine were on the brink of caving in to government forces, who had almost surrounded the separatist capital, Donetsk. Over the next month, Russia would stage a major intervention - sending tanks and troops across the border to help push back Ukrainian forces and reclaim rebel territory.
On August 10 Mr Tumanov called his mother and said: "Tomorrow they are sending us to Donetsk" - the rebel capital. "We're going to help the militia."
The next day he told her: "We're handing in our documents and our phones. They've given us two grenades and 150 rounds of ammunition each." A few hours later came his final message, via VKontakte, Russia's equivalent of Facebook: "Gave in phone. Gone to Ukraine."
Miss Chernova, a slender 17-year old high school student, says her boyfriend went against his will. "The last time we spoke he told me he and some friends discussed running away but they were a long way from home, they didn't have food," she says. "It was impossible."
Mrs Tumanova knows what happened next from one of her son's comrades, who served in the same unit and went with him. The soldier gave her a handwritten description.
"On August 11 we were given an order to remove the identification plates from our military vehicles, change into camouflage suits and tie white rags on our arms and legs," the soldier wrote. "At the border we received supplies of ammunition. On the 11th and 12th we crossed onto Ukrainian territory. On August 13th at lunchtime our column was hit by a rocket strike, during which Anton Tumanov died. At that moment we were in Ukraine, in Snezhnoye (a town not far from Donetsk)."

<h3>Scores, hundreds of dead</h3>
Sergei Krivenko, head of Citizen and Army, a civil group in Moscow which helps soldiers and their families protect their rights, says activists are sure of at least 40 deaths of Russian servicemen this summer and autumn but suspect the total may be in the hundreds.
A senior officer admitted at a recent meeting with Mr Krivenko and other rights activists that there had been deaths in the military but was vague about where they happened and how.
"He told us a shell flew over the border from Ukraine and hit a tank or something blew up by accident as people sat round a fire on a target range," says Mr Krivenko, who is also a member of Mr Putin's presidential human rights commission.
"Russia is officially not at war so there should be a criminal investigation into every death, but the authorities refuse our requests to open them," he adds.
A handful of soldiers have described to Citizen and Army how they were sent on trips into Ukraine to deliver weapons and later had their contracts torn up when they refused to return there, or when units were downsized.
Comrades of Mr Tumanov corroborated the account given to his mother, telling Mr Krivenko that the young sergeant died when a volley of Ukrainian Grad missiles hit their ammunition trucks on the territory of a factory in Snezhnoye (known as Snizhne in Ukrainian). They estimated 120 men had died in that attack alone.
Probing the deaths can be a risky business. Lyudmila Bogatenkova, a 73-year old representative of the Soldiers' Mothers Committee in Stavropol, suddenly found herself charged with fraud after she investigated deaths in Snizhne.
The St Petersburg chapter of the same group was added to Russia's list of Foreign Agents - a blacklist of NGOs with foreign funding - after its head publicised reports of scores of injured being brought to a hospital in the city.
A few relatvies appear to accept their loved ones' fates. In an interview with a Moscow radio station, the father of Nikolai Kozlov, a 21-year-old paratrooper from a unit in Ulyanovsk who lost his leg, said he was proud of his son. "He gave his vow and carried out his orders," he said. A state television report on Mr Kozlov's progress in hospital was cut with footage of street fighting and tanks flying Ukrainian flags. The report presented him as "the man who was until recently in hell's corner and who at last returned home to Russia". It did not say where from.
Lev Shlosberg, a local MP in Pskov in western Russia, says there is an atmosphere of secrecy and fear around the casualties. He is campaigning to find out how twelve paratroopers based in the town met their deaths in the summer. After he first wrote about it in a blog post, unknown assailants pounced from behind as he walked near his home, knocking him down and beating him unconscious. Thugs also threatened reporters who visited graves of the paratroopers with "never being seen again" and slashed their car tires.
"A great many Russian servicemen have died in Ukraine and their families are outraged but they don't speak out because they are afraid for their lives," says Mr Shlosberg, who recovered after hospital treatment. He says he has spoken to relatives of the dead and to soldiers who fought in Ukraine against their will but they are desperate to remain anonymous. "People in Russia today live in terror of the authorities."

<h3>'Our children are nameless'</h3>
In Kozmodemyansk, Miss Chernova picks her way her way home through the snow after school. She can't forget her boyfriend. She posts poems about Mr Tumanov on her VKontakte page and remembers the moment she woke up abruptly with a bad feeling inside on the day he died.
"Anton was not a volunteer," she says forcefully. "He didn't want to go to Ukraine to fight and kill people. He didn't have that aggression inside him. He joined up to defend his country."
At home in her living room, Yelena Tumanova is still waiting for an explanation about her son's death. His peaked army cap lies on a folded Russian tricolor on top of the television. On the wall is a small portrait of him in uniform with a black ribbon across the corner.
Mrs Tumanova asked state prosecutors via a civil rights group to investigate her son's last days. There has been no reply.
At the town's military commissariat, employees told The Telegraph they had no information about Mr Tumanov. A senior official at the medical centre in Rostov where his death was recorded also refused to comment.
"For me, what's important is that our government doesn't hide what happened," says Mrs Tumanova. "On television they say our (Russian) war correspondents who died in Ukraine were heroes. We know their names, they were awarded the Order of Courage. But this isn't about medals. It's that our children are nameless. Like homeless tramps.
"If they sent our soldiers there, let them admit it. That's the most bitter thing for a mother like me. It's too late to bring Anton back but this is just inhuman."
