<ul class="summary-list"><li>During the US Grand Prix, Insider spoke with Lenovo and F1 about the growth and future of the sport.</li><li>The new world of partnerships often moves beyond just advertising dollars and benefits both sides.</li></ul><p>The impact of the Netflix and Formula One docuseries "Drive to Survive" is real. Consider the following:</p><ul><li>F1 had 22 races last year, and one was in the United States.</li><li>Next year, three of the 24 races will be in the US.</li><li>At the 2017 US Grand Prix, the majority of ticket holders on Saturday showed up <em>after </em>qualifying because they just wanted to see the Justin Timberlake concert.</li><li>In 2021, when 400,000 people showed up to the Circuit of the Americas, that flipped as the vast majority of fans showed up for the various F1 sessions (practice, qualifying, etc.).</li></ul><p>And it is just not the US. When F1 returned to Melbourne, Australia, this year for the first time since 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, they recorded their largest attendance ever (420,000). According to F1, 40% of those ticket holders were women, a sharp increase they believe was due to the impact of "Drive to Survive."</p><div type="image" title="United States Grand Prix at COTA" height="1667" width="2500" msid="95494023" hostid="261" sizebytes="814206"></div><p>As the sport resonates with more fans and a more diverse audience than ever, it is also attracting more and bigger partnerships.</p><p>One such example is F1's new deal with Lenovo, the China-based technology company with a strong presence in the US.</p><p>During the recent US Grand Prix, Insider spoke with Gerald Youngblood, the chief marketing officer for Lenovo North America, and Zarah Al-Kudcy, F1's head of commercial partnerships.</p><p>In recent years, Lenovo has found a stronger presence in sports. In addition to their new deal with F1 this year that includes title sponsorship for two races (British Grand Prix and French Grand Prix), they have the Ducati Lenovo team in MotoGP and a shirt-sponsorship deal with Italian football club Inter Milan.</p><p>And Lenovo's presence in F1 will grow — a source told Insider they'll be the title sponsor for three races in 2023.</p><div type="image" title="Lenovo F1 French Grand Prix Champagne" height="1604" width="2500" msid="95494024" hostid="261" sizebytes="1525658"></div><p>We don't know which race Lenovo will be adding in 2023 (Las Vegas!?), but they would like a stronger presence in the US at some point, noting the growing impact of the sport in North America and the continued strength around the world.</p><p>"This is a unique partnership where from one region to another we can have that impact [where our customers live and work]," Youngblood told Insider. "I love the opportunity of, at some point, having a showcase here in the US."</p><h2>F1's deal with Lenovo is a reflection of the sport and their fans</h2><p>Lenovo's deal with F1 is more than just buying ad space at the tracks. They're also providing the series with PC systems, servers, and high-performance computing. The reason for partnering with F1 is strongly linked to the growing fan base and to who those fans are.</p><p>"We found that the followers of Formula One are more likely to be tech purchasers and IT decision-makers," Youngblood said. "They're more likely to also share on social media about the technology that they're using."</p><p>There is also the growing perception, especially in the US, that F1 is the pinnacle of innovation.</p><p>"What could be the more premium sport than Formula One to really align around the brand?" Youngblood said. "There are also very practical benefits in terms of aligning and visibility of our brand with other brands that share that drive for innovation and have an audience that can appreciate the story that Lenovo is telling."</p><div type="image" title="Lewis Hamilton" height="1406" width="2500" msid="95494025" hostid="261" sizebytes="160106"></div><p>That perception of F1 is not new to their hardcore fan, but is in the corporate world. Five years ago, F1 had a single technology partner. In addition to Lenovo, F1 now has partnered with several tech companies, including AWS, Zoom, TATA Communications, and BWT.</p><p>"The growth that we have in tech partnerships is huge," Al-Kudcy said. "I think it's about us as a workforce also working with our partner products. That's the thing we've got much better at historically. Our partnership [with Lenovo] definitely has an element of that. But it is also about authentic storytelling, which you now see in 'Drive to Survive.'"</p><h2>Growing beyond 'Drive to Survive' will be about moving the story forward</h2><p>One subtle, but important, part of the comments above is the idea of telling a "story." Spend enough time around corporate promotion these days, and you know that "storytelling" is a huge part of getting messages to consumers, whether that's people buying PCs or picking sports to follow.</p><p>That's where "Drive to Survive" comes in.</p><p>With the Netflix series, F1 has tapped into an incredible way to tell F1's story, one other sports are starting to copy. But like any TV vehicle, interest in the show will taper or even wane at some point. The key for F1 is finding a way to maintain that momentum, which includes continuing to tell an interesting story to old and new fans, whether on Netflix or through another medium.</p><div type="image" title="Drive to Survive" height="1080" width="1920" msid="95494026" hostid="261" sizebytes="197748"></div><p>Unlike other major sports where networks or cable companies produce the broadcasts, F1 produces its own races for television and other media. Lenovo is assisting in that in numerous ways.</p><p>"We are very mindful of: How do we take the storytelling of 'Drive to Survive' and bring that out in our own transmission of the world feed, or our YouTube, our Twitter content, or that we do our podcasts?," Al-Kudcy said. "It's about making sure that we're just generally better storytellers but also bringing that 'Drive to Survive' audience in and keeping them hooked."</p><p>Youngblood agreed, noting that he is one of those fans now hooked beyond just the Netflix series.</p><p>"I think it's just more that the audience has just started on that progress to getting hooked," Youngblood said. "Like me waking up at ridiculous hours to watch races and also seeing the impact of technology to make it even more immersive and bring me even closer to the experience so that not everybody has to physically be at the track, but they can really be part of it."</p><h2>Reaching the at-home fan is key to maintaining the 'Drive to Survive' momentum</h2><p>Youngblood's comment about fans not being at the track is important to F1. While attendance figures at races around the world have skyrocketed, those people represent a tiny part of the sport's fanbase.</p><p>F1 estimates that they have 500 million fans worldwide. But having attended many races, it is clear that the standard TV experience doesn't do the sport justice.</p><p>Whatever you think about the speed, the sound, the smell, the power of the cars, and the talent of the drivers controlling the rockets on wheels, it is many times more impressive in person. If AR and VR can bring that experience closer to the fans not at the race, everybody will win.</p>

Players' choices in the game affect its storyline and outcome. As a result, there will be <a href="https://screenrant.com/cyberpunk-2077-multiple-endings/">several endings to the game</a> depending on past decisions made.</p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_Hello_stranger_RGB en" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593725" hostid="261"></div>Console and PC gamers alike can rejoice, because the it will be available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Google Stadia, and PC.<h2><strong>Retro-futurism</strong></h2><p>Like everything else in the game - from the weapons, the fashions, the people, to the technology - the cars and motorcycles found in Cyberpunk will all exhibit incredible detail and design. </p><div type="image" title="screen high speed high stakes en" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593727" hostid="261"></div>And the primary guiding aesthetic? "Retro-futurism sums up our designs very well," Paweł Breshke Czyżewski, a senior vehicle concept designer at CD Projekt Red, told Business Insider. "Our vehicles have details that make reference to futurism but they are not so intrusive. Instead, they feel like a logical part of the world.<p>"We didn't want that kind of out-of-this-world futurism, which includes small spaceships in place of cars."</p><div type="image" title="Rayfield Caliburn" height="1080" width="1920" msid="79593729" hostid="261"></div>This is why the cars in Cyberpunk will still be recognizable as cars; they'll have four wheels, a steering wheel, a speedometer, a gearbox. But they'll also have futuristic twists, such as the inclusion of sonar, lidar, mirrors with built-in monitors, and large, screen-filled dashboards that display extremely detailed information.<p>There will also be self-driving and autonomous options, but those "remain reserved for selected luxury models only the richest can afford," Czyżewski said. <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/lanceeliot/2019/09/10/will-only-those-with-wealth-and-fame-have-access-to-self-driving-cars/?sh=10c6ad0045a0">Kind of like how things are now</a>! </p><div type="image" title="Quadra Type 66 Avenger" height="1080" width="1920" msid="79593730" hostid="261"></div>That idea of class differences is further manifested in how the cars look. "The majority of cheap vehicles are asymmetrical and have devices in the form of lidars or lights attached clunkily to the body - the result of car owners making DIY 'improvements' out of necessity," Czyżewski said.<p>To square with the dystopian future of 2077, the cars will also have roof-mounted license plates. Czyżewski said that small details such as these reflect the effort the team put into making the cars feel like they truly belong in the Cyberpunk world. The license plates, for example, are so air-bound police who use autonomous vehicles can easily identify them from above.</p><h2><strong>Driving in Night City</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_City_Center Keep_me_in_the_loop_2 RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593731" hostid="261"></div>Driving in Night City will "feel believable," Czyżewski said, but he insisted that the team did not set out to make a driving simulator like iRacing or the Forza Motorsport series. Cyberpunk will have tanks, heavy-duty trucks, cars, and motorcycles available to players and each will feel unique in their handling and control. Each vehicle will have its own story.<p>"We wanted players to have full control over handling regardless of vehicle class and have a different experience driving each type," Czyżewski said. "For example, you'll be able to feel that an SUV is more heavy and clunky to drive, while a sporty coupe is much faster, more precise, and more responsive."</p><h2><strong>The catalog of cars</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_911_screenshot_03_RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593733" hostid="261"></div>Though Czyżewski declined to answer how many cars and bikes will be featured in the game, it seems like there will be a lot. One of the game's coolest inclusions will be the 1977 <keyword id="45673" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Porsche">Porsche</keyword> 930 Turbo - one of the most iconic and coveted 911 models for car enthusiasts. The car will be 100 years old in Cyberpunk 2077, and supposedly <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a34406001/1977-porsche-930-turbo-cyberpunk-2077/">it is the only car in the game that'll be based on a real car</a>.<p>The 930 Turbo is especially fitting, as it hails from the 1980s - the start of Cyberpunk's history. It is, as an emailed press release claims, "a link between the Cyberpunk universe in 2077 and our world today." Everything, from the body to the interior and the engine, has been completely reproduced on a 1:1 scale.</p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_911_screenshot_05_RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593734" hostid="261"></div>Adapted - much like all the other cars - to suit the game's reality, the Porsche has a front-mounted lidar attachment, electronic mirrors, interior monitors, and sensors that can be used to identify those air-bound police vehicles. It wears a red-and-white stripe along its side, a nod to the Porsche 911 RSR Le Mans endurance race car.<p>The 930 Turbo will be closely connected to one of Cyberpunk's main characters: Johnny Silverhand, who is modeled after and portrayed by none other than <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8_JEaoYcOs">Keanu Reeves</a>.</p><div type="image" title="You_look_like_youve_seen_a_ghost en" height="1563" width="2500" msid="79593736" hostid="261"></div>Other vehicles include the Quadra Turbo-R, which was <a href="https://jalopnik.com/cyberpunk-2077-looks-like-the-raddest-80s-supercar-futu-1826949555">featured in a game trailer from 2018's E3 conference</a>. It looks like a wedge-shaped, mid-engine car with exposed air intakes and a manual transmission (!). <p>Then there's the Yaiba ASMX Kusanagi motorcycle and the adorable Makigai MaiMai, a <a href="https://jalopnik.com/i-lived-with-a-japanese-kei-car-for-a-week-and-this-is-1829130212">kei-car</a> looking thing that appears to draw inspiration from <a href="https://jalopnik.com/tag/bubble-era">Japan's Bubble Era</a>. </p><h2><strong>Recreating for a virtual world</strong></h2><p>Replicating the cars virtually was a long and painstaking process.</p><div type="image" title="Thorton Colby Butte &quot;Shooting Brake&quot;" height="1080" width="1920" msid="79593737" hostid="261"></div>The team drew inspiration from various places, including real automotive design trends from the past couple of decades and other cyberpunk media, but put special effort into ensuring that the cars would always be identifiable as ones from Cyberpunk 2077. <p>"We had the idea of retro-futurism to guide us, as well as the aesthetic and styles that make up Night City," Czyżewski said. "When it came to taking inspiration from manufactured cars - and concept cars - we'd focus more on smaller elements and themes, adapting them, blending them, or putting our own twist on them in some of our cars.</p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_911_screenshot_012_RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593739" hostid="261"></div>"So, when we look at other cyberpunk influences, from ​Blade Runner​, for instance, we weren't necessarily taking that style and putting it into our game, but more figuring out how to design our cars in such a way that, one day, they can stand alone as iconic cyberpunk style cars that are distinctly ours."<p>Judging from the game's trailers and demos, textures appear to be a big part of the immersive world. After the team finishes researching and compiling a database of both real and concept cars that would inspire the cars in the game, they build a conceptual 3D model that includes the crucial details like the lidar, license plates, and sonar.</p><div type="image" title="Makigai MaiMai P126" height="1080" width="1920" msid="79593742" hostid="261"></div>After that, a designer transforms the vehicle into something that'll be later on used in the game. This is the step where the model is finished with all its appropriate internal parts. Reflections in the bodywork have to be checked over to make sure they look right.<p>Then come the chassis, the lights, and animations relating to entry, exit, destruction, and steering.</p><p>But to truly make the cars sound real, a specialized audio team used high-tech microphones and recording equipment to grab sound bytes of real engines, exhausts, and other internal parts (including the opening and closing of windows).</p><div type="image" title="Thorton Galena Nomad &quot;Gecko&quot;" height="1080" width="1920" msid="79593743" hostid="261"></div>The fourth episode of the game's video blog, "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcWf0pnbfLA&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=516&amp;ab_channel=Cyberpunk2077yberpunk2077">Night City Wire</a>," shows that the team rented out a race track and hired a professional race car driver to have them drive the cars around, hard, so they could pick up the full spectrum of sound. They recorded everything from muscle cars, off-road cars, drift cars, highly tuned V6s, to the V10 exhaust note from the Lexus LFA, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EigaoIHj2fo">one of the greatest-sounding cars ever made</a>.<p>Mechanics from a rally team were hired to help place microphones in places that aren't easily reached, such as in the engine bay and in the exhaust. </p><div type="image" title="Yaiba Kusanagi Tyger Claw Custom" height="1080" width="1920" msid="79593745" hostid="261"></div>Thus, even though the game is set in 2077, the cars will still retain internal-combustion engines and sound the way they do today. So don't be surprised when you hear a familiar noise coming out of a completely unfamiliar virtual car.<h2><strong>Squaring with the now</strong></h2><p>It's undeniable that today's automotive landscape is in a state of flux. Autonomous driving and electric cars are but some of the technology rapidly expanding to fill the space. We're now forced to think, more than ever, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-international-plans-to-combat-climate-change-with-evs-2020-12">about cars and their lasting impact on the environment and urban spaces</a>. </p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_Love_this_town_RGB en" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593747" hostid="261"></div><p>When designing a futuristic game, set in a megalopolis and with a heavy reliance on cars, this reality cannot be ignored.</p><p>"​It's obvious that the automotive industry is changing, and it has to change - it's inevitable," Czyżewski said. "Currently, we are in the middle of the greatest revolution in the automotive world and everything has an impact on it, from the economy to climate change. Similar to the real world, such aspects affect how vehicles look and function in Cyberpunk 2077."</p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_The_road_is_closed_RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593748" hostid="261"></div>It's hard to say where the future of cars will take us. Perhaps, Czyżewski guessed, everything will be AI-controlled and private car ownership will end. Instead, everyone will rely on public <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> that's handled by local municipalities.<p>Or, Czyżewski suggested, there might not be any public transportation at all, either because everyone will work remotely or because cities "will be so intelligently built that you could walk everywhere and vehicles would be used only to get out of the city."</p><p>"In such a scenario, cars we know today would exist only as a toy for the rich and there will be huge squares with roads especially built for them, where they will be able to feel the power of these classics," Czyżewski said.</p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_911_screenshot_010_RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593750" hostid="261"></div>Cars are inherently political. They always have been and forever will be. Everything about them - from their manufacturing, price points, design, what technologies they offer, who they are for, fuel-economy standards - are actions and reactions based on the world around them. <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/article/7450/listen-up-cars-are-part-of-politics-and-politics-are-part-of-cars">They do not exist in a vacuum</a>. <p>When creating and designing cars and motorcycles for Cyberpunk 2077, Czyżewski and his team kept this powerfully in mind. </p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_911_screenshot_011_RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593753" hostid="261"></div>"We had to consider exactly how Night City functions, and what kind of transport different residents would need," he said. "We also wanted cars to reflect Night City's history, which is outlined by four art styles in the game: Kitsch, Entropism, Neomilitarism, and Neokitsch." <p>These styles are omnipresent, as evidenced in "cars, clothes, guns, [and] implants," according to this <a href="https://youtu.be/YlyDJVYqfpA">Cyberpunk 2077 YouTube video</a>. </p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_Can_you_fix_me_RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593755" hostid="261"></div>Among the four, Entropism is the oldest and focuses on "necessity over style," according to <a href="https://www.gamesatlas.com/cyberpunk-2077/styles/entropism-style">Games Atlas</a>. <p>"This lifestyle was born when the Fourth Corporate War broke out," according to the website. "Vast and deep crises forced people to find ways to survive by any means necessary. Entropism represents the look of poverty that derives from humans grappling with and struggling against technology and its unforgiving advance."</p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077 Catching_a_break RGB en" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593756" hostid="261"></div>Flashiness, bold colors, and eccentric makeup characterize Kitsch. "As society began to recover after the stock market crash, people looked for ways to brighten up the grey world they became accustomed to. Kitsch was a popular counter-cultural movement against the austerity of Entropism," <a href="https://www.gamesatlas.com/cyberpunk-2077/styles/kitsch-style">Games Atlas</a> says. <p>Neomilitarism is born from "global conflict" and "corporations jockeying for power," according to <a href="https://www.gamesatlas.com/cyberpunk-2077/styles/neo-militarism-style">Games Atlas</a>. Its entry on the website shows people dressed in cutthroat black outfits along with <a href="https://www.gamesatlas.com/cyberpunk-2077/vehicles/chevillon-thrax">a car apparently called</a> the "Chevillon Thrax" - a Rolls-Royce-esque limousine fit for a dystopian war zone.</p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077 Sweet_ride en" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593757" hostid="261"></div>And finally, Neokitsch is for the obscenely wealthy and out-of-touch. <p>"Neokitsch is for celebrities, braindance stars, business magnates, heirs to corporate fortunes, and corporate executives," says <a href="https://www.gamesatlas.com/cyberpunk-2077/styles/neo-kitsch-style">Games Atlas</a>. "They abandoned the cold, deadly elegance of Neomilitarism and returned to the roots of Kitsch, but gave it a fresh, new look. This is the look of the ultra-rich appropriating the surface-level aesthetic of Kitsch without acknowledging its cultural motivation, warping it into a statement of abject wealth."</p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_911_screenshot_015_RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593758" hostid="261"></div>"Cars that were manufactured in each era are a reflection of design philosophies and production realities of said era," Czyżewski elaborated. "So, Entropism cars are noticeably less elegant in their design and feature poorer quality materials because Night City was in a particularly rough state during that time.<p>"Neokitsch cars, on the other hand, are ultra-luxurious and reflect the immeasurable wealth of those who flaunt this style - a minuscule percentage of the population."</p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_911_screenshot_018_RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593760" hostid="261"></div>These ideas were no doubt inspired by real-world situations, such as <a href="https://www.autonews.com/article/20131014/GLOBAL/131019959/10-ways-the-1973-oil-embargo-changed-the-industry">how the oil crisis in the 1970s</a> crumbled the US domestic car market and accelerated sales from Japanese and European automakers, or how celebrities own <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kylie-jenner-luxury-car-collection-bugatti-rolls-royce">multimillion-dollar vehicle collections</a> while the average American drives a 12-year-old car.<p>Though it is a fictional game set nearly 60 years in the future, Cyberpunk 2077 does appear to address the social and class anxieties that very real societies struggle with today. It's clearly reflected in the choice of cars and their role in Night City. </p><div type="image" title="screen a mercenary on the rise en" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593762" hostid="261"></div>The game even goes as far as to suggest that there will still be a reliance on fossil fuels decades from now - a future that may very well be our own, even if skyrocketing EV stock prices might have us convinced otherwise. <p>But as for how we get around in Night City? Cars are the main attraction.</p>

How Cyberpunk 2077 used real-world influence to design a slew of cars unique to the game and its communities

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Antonio Villas-Boas/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The Surface Laptop 2 is Microsoft's most straightforward laptop.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Microsoft's new Surface Laptop 2 is available starting Tuesday for $999. </li><li>Microsoft didn't re-invent the wheel with this year's version - it's quite similar to last year's model. </li><li>But that's a good thing: generally speaking, the Surface Laptop 2 is a wonderful little laptop that stands up to the best of Apple.</li><li>The keyboard feels springier and more responsive, the trackpad has a better texture, and the device is light and thin. </li><li>The Surface Laptop 2 also gets about six hours of battery life. </li></ul><p>In mid-2017, Microsoft released the Surface Laptop, a break from the norm for the Redmond tech titan's growing hardware business. </p><p>Where Microsoft's other PC hardware all came with some kind of gimmick - the Surface Studio PC folds down to a drawing desk; the Surface Book laptop's screen detaches - the Surface Laptop was (mostly) a straightforward touchscreen laptop, with nothing but a solid design and a weird fabric-coated keyboard to set it apart. </p><p>And yet, the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-surface-laptop-review-2017-7"> Surface Laptop distinguished itself by being actually really good</a>; at least as good, if not better than, the Apple MacBook, its closest competitor.</p><p>With the Surface Laptop 2, available Tuesday for a starting price of $999, Microsoft really didn't re-invent the wheel. I've been using it for a few days now, not enough for a full review, but enough to tell you that with this laptop, the good news <em>is </em>the bad news. </p><p>The bad news is that it means the Surface Laptop 2 isn't wildly different from last year's model, including some of its quirks. The good news is that, generally speaking, this thing is a wonderful little laptop that stands up to the best of Apple.</p><h2>A little bit of bad</h2><p>First, let's get the bad news out of the way real quick. It still has the fabric-covered keyboard that some people didn't like. In my opinion, this makes the Surface Laptop weirdly cozy to type on, but also, it takes extra care to keep it clean and crumb-free. Microsoft recommends wiping the keyboard down with "a damp, lint-free cloth." </p><p>Also annoying is the fact that the Surface Laptop 2 doesn't ship with a USB-C port, the latest and, honestly, greatest standard for connecting accessories. </p><p>Whereas <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-macbook-pro-iphone-usb-c-2018-9">Apple dropped the ball by going all-in on USB-C too soon</a>, making it the only port on its recent-model MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-microsoft-surface-usb-c-2018-10">Microsoft is weirdly running the other direction</a> by not including a USB-C port at all.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Microsoft</span></p><p class="caption">The Surface Laptop 2 comes in multiple colors, but it's all fabric-covered.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Surface Laptop has one standard USB port, a mini-DVI port for hooking up a monitor, Microsoft's proprietary Surface Connect port for charging, and a headphone jack. Your mileage may vary, but I tend to believe that a USB-C jack, instead of that mini-DVI port, would have been a better balance between old and new. </p><p>It's also decidedly not a gaming laptop. It's more than sufficient for everyday tasks like web browsing, Microsoft Office, etc., but it doesn't have the graphical hardware to play big-ticket recent releases. I couldn't get "Forza Horizon 4," the gorgeous new racing game, to run on the Surface Laptop 2 at all. Just be advised.  </p><p>Anyway! These are quibbles. On to the good. </p><h2>A lot to love</h2><p>Other than my port woes, I actually like the Surface Laptop 2 quite a bit. </p><p>In terms of tangible upgrades from last year's model, they're few and far between. Most notably, it now comes in an extremely slick matte black color option, which is the model I'm using. Let me tell you, it feels like sending Facebook messages from the cockpit of the Batmobile. </p><p>Otherwise, it's a lot of little improvements. The keyboard, already better than that on the most recent Apple MacBook Pro, feels springier and more responsive. The trackpad seems to have a slightly better texture, too. At 2.76 pounds, the Surface Laptop 2 is also light and thin enough to lug around. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Melia Robinson/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The original Surface Laptop. Battery-wise, I'm getting about six hours with lots of tabs open in the Microsoft Edge web browser (which, by the way, is just fine. Still not as good as Google Chrome, but fine, with some thoughtful little touches).</p><p>The nicest, and truest, thing I can say about the Surface Laptop 2 is that it's just a joy to use. No gimmicks, no weird drawbacks. It's just a good laptop with a good keyboard and a good trackpad with good battery life that's a pleasure to use. </p><p>If you need more power, I recommend the Microsoft Surface Book 2. For gaming, Dell, Razer, and others have laptops custom-built for that purpose. For the true road warrior, there's the Surface Go and the Surface Pro. Why did Google use it in the first place? And why is Oracle so mad?</p><p>Here are some answers.</p><h2>A brief history of Java</h2><p>Depending on who you ask, Java is either the <a href="http://www.tiobe.com/tiobe_index">most popular</a> or <a href="http://redmonk.com/sogrady/2016/02/19/language-rankings-1-16/">second-most-popular</a> programming language in the world. </p><p>Huge chunks of Amazon, Google, Netflix, PayPal, and lots of others all power their web applications and software with Java, right alongside other popular languages like C++.</p><p>Java gots its start at early Silicon Valley superpower Sun Microsystems in 1991, in a group led by famed programmer James Gosling. Not exciting, hardly wearable, but very predictable. A language for building great big things for great big places with great big teams," wrote Paul Ford in the seminal Bloomberg Businessweek essay "<a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2015-paul-ford-what-is-code/">What Is Code</a>" in 2015. "People complain, but it works."</p><p>And because it works so reliably and so well, there's always a market for programmers who know Java. And, in turn, it means there are lots of programmers with Java expertise.</p><p>In 2009, Oracle bought Sun Microsystems. Soon after, Google's legal troubles began.</p><h2>The rise of Android</h2><p>In 2005, Google bought a startup called Android for around $50 million, bringing its team on board to help build a new mobile operating system.</p><p>That team, knowing full well that the smartphone market was poised to explode, was racing the clock to get Android to market. To do that, they built on top of freely available technologies, like the Linux kernel and Sun's Java programming language. </p><p>For Google, the thought was twofold: First, lots of developers already know Java very well, so they wouldn't have anything to re-learn when they were building Android apps. Second, thanks to its popularity, Java itself has rich, deep support for lots of behind-the-scenes things Google needed in a new operating system, and saw no reason to reinvent the wheel.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p><p class="caption">Android cofounder Andy Rubin</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>During this week's trial, former Google CEO and current Alphabet executive chairman <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-considered-40-million-five-year-java-license-trial-testimony-2016-5">Eric Schmidt testified that the company tried to pay Sun as much as $40 million to license Java for Android</a>. Those talks fell apart, meaning that Google didn't use the official Java logo for Android or some of its technology.</p><p>But, and here's the crucial part, you can't copyright or own a programming language, any more than you could the English language. And so, Google moved ahead with Java in Android, replicating itself whatever pieces it couldn't license from Sun and building the rest from scratch.</p><p>Schmidt testified that Google didn't believe it was doing anything wrong, because that code was freely available. Sun may or may not have been really upset about Android's usage of Java, but it wasn't in the company's nature to go after Google. Oracle has no such hesitation.</p><h2>Sticky</h2><p>This is where Google got itself into this legally-sticky territory, it should be noted: Oracle contends that while it may be legal for Google to use the Java programming language, it stepped over a line when it used some of that code.</p><p>Oracle's issue is that Google used some of Sun's Application Programming Interfaces, or APIs - kind of the "hooks" that computer programs use to talk to each other - to access some of those behind-the-scenes Java features. And while the Java language may be immune to copyright, Oracle says those connectors are its own intellectual property. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/janpecek/15180124055/in/photolist-6kzXBW-pKsQcA-cwr9kY-dW83E8-p8q71P">Jan Pecek/Flickr</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>For what it's worth, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oracles-lawsuit-against-google-continues-and-is-still-important-2014-12">larger tech industry disagrees mightily that this usage violated Oracle's rights</a>, or indeed that you can copyright an API. Here is the technology at the heart of the $9 billion legal war between Oracle and Google

<p dir="ltr">It's a full PC when you need to get work done and a tablet when you want to do casual stuff like browse the web or play a game. Why buy a $1,000 laptop and a $500 tablet when one device can do it all for a little over $900? After all, over 90% of tablet owners still use a laptop.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Plus it's lighter and thinner than the MacBook Air, all while boasting comparable or better specs. There's a brilliant 12-inch touchscreen. A silent fan. A pen for doodling and taking notes.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Doesn't that sound like something you'd want to buy?</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's the same story we've been hearing since Microsoft introduced the first Surface tablets nearly two years ago. Microsoft just did a better job at pitching this time. Unfortunately, that pitch is still an oversell. The Surface Pro 3 pushes us closer to that dreamy all-in-one device, but we're not quite there yet.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Surface Pro 3 is available for preorder now starting at $799, but you'll need to spend an extra $130 for the optional but essential keyboard cover. (More on that in a bit.) It ships in August.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">What Is It?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">From a hardware perspective, the Surface Pro 3 is downright impressive. It's a marvel that Microsoft was able to squish all the guts of a full PC into something so thin, light, beautiful, and durable. The screen resolution pops. Slap on the keyboard cover, and you're ready to crank through Office documents and Outlook emails.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's wrong to compare the Surface Pro 3 to other tablets, especially on price. This is a PC disguised as a tablet, not a tablet pretending to be a PC. And that's why the Surface costs significantly more than your typical tablet. Think of it as a MacBook Air competitor, not an iPad competitor.</p>
<p dir="ltr">At 9.1mm, the Surface Pro 3 is only a hair thicker than the iPhone 5S. Without the keyboard cover, it weighs 1.76 pounds, which is heavy by tablet standards but very impressive for a fully featured PC.</p>

<p dir="ltr">If you buy Microsoft's Surface docking station, you can hook the tablet up to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, making it a replacement for your desktop PC, too. It also comes with a special pen that you can use to convert handwriting to plain text and quickly copy and paste items. The pen connects to the Surface via Bluetooth, and a double-click of the button on the end wakes the tablet up and automatically launches OneNote, Microsoft's note-taking app.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The keyboard cover got some improvements, too. The touchpad is bigger and bit more responsive. There's a magnetic strip on the edge that connects to the bottom bezel of the screen, which props the keyboard to a more comfortable typing angle. (Previous versions of the Surface forced you to type flat on the table, which felt awkward.) Microsoft claims that new keyboard angle helps the Surface work better in your lap, too.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">What's It Like?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">The Surface Pro 3 is the best Windows 8 machine you can buy. But don't take that as a compliment.</p>
<p dir="ltr">When I was in the Boy Scouts in elementary school, I won first place in the "turtle race" at the Pinewood Derby. The slowest car. The best of the worst. I got a trophy and everything.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That's what it feels like calling the Surface Pro 3 the best Windows 8 machine. It's a sad award for being at the top of the lowest class. It's not the hardware that's the problem, but Windows 8. Despite Microsoft's improvements over the last year and a half, Windows 8 is still clunky and difficult to use. You're forced into two operating systems, one for touch and one for the desktop. That also means two web browsers. Two email programs. Two settings menus to slog through. Let a newbie try Windows 8 for 15 minutes and she'll be screaming for the simplicity of iOS.</p>

The Surface Pro 3 is a mediocre tablet and a mediocre laptop. Put those two together, and you have a pricey device that still isn't as ideal as using something more traditional.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That said, if you enjoy Windows 8, you're definitely going to like the Surface Pro 3. It's the first device you should consider buying if you want a Windows machine. I may not think it's the optimal operating system, but if you want a gadget that truly can do everything (although not perfectly), the Surface Pro 3 will work out nicely.</p>
<p dir="ltr">What really bakes my noodle is that Microsoft spent so long trying to persuade everyone that the Surface Pro 3 is a laptop replacement, but still charges you an extra $130 for the keyboard cover. If someone tried selling you a regular laptop without a keyboard, you'd laugh and go spend your money somewhere else. It's like selling a car without wheels.</p>
<p dir="ltr">And the keyboard isn't that great. The keys are plasticky and cheap-feeling. The touchpad is a disaster. Two-finger scrolling is a frustrating mess, and I often found myself randomly highlighting text on web pages when I didn't mean to. Plus, even though Microsoft promised the Surface Pro 3 will sit sturdily in your lap, the keyboard is still too flimsy and nowhere near as good as using a normal laptop.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Battery life was also disappointing. Microsoft claims you can get about 8 hours, but I was only able to get about 5. That's not great, considering laptops like the MacBook Air can get over 10 hours per charge.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The biggest improvement to the hardware is the kickstand. It's now fully adjustable, so you can prop the tablet to whatever angle is most comfortable for you. (The last Surface's kickstand only had two configurations.) It can lay almost flat now, which is probably nice for artists who want to sketch on the device with the pen accessory.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> In that respect, the Surface Pro 3 matches a regular laptop nicely.</span></p>

The Surface Pro 3 is almost a pound heavier than the iPad Air, and the larger 12-inch screen isn't very comfortable for kicking back on the couch or train so you can casually read an e-book or stream a Netflix movie. If you're looking for a tablet, an iPad, Kindle Fire, or Google Nexus 7 is much better. The Surface Pro 3 is just too big and the battery life is just too weak compared with the competition.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Conclusion</h2>
<p dir="ltr">If you like Windows 8 and use Office a lot, then the Surface Pro 3 is the perfect device for you. It's the ideal manifestation of what Microsoft believes Windows 8 should be, and you're going to love it if you buy into that vision.</p>
<p dir="ltr">But for everyone else, Microsoft hasn't fulfilled its promise of building a device that can do it all and do it all well.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That said, there's still hope. The Surface team proved the laptop isn't finished evolving. It showed us that we're inching closer to a world where yes, maybe we don't need to lug around two or more devices when one will suffice.</p>
<p dir="ltr">We're not there yet, but boy are we close.</p>
