New Delhi, Nov 15 () Wheat sowing continued to lag by 23 per cent at 32.98 lakh hectare in the ongoing rabi (winter) season so far compared to the previous season due to a significantly lower coverage in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh, according to the Agriculture Ministry's data released on Friday.
 Area sown to most rabi crops remained lower in this rabi season, which begins from October.
 Wheat, the main rabi crop, was sown in 32.98 lakh hectare area so far this season as against 42.80 lakh hectare in the year ago period, the data showed.
 Total wheat area was lower as the crop in Punjab was sown in only 7.81 lakh hectare so far in the current rabi season against 14.68 lakh hectare in the last season.
 In Madhya Pradesh, farmers planted wheat crop in 5.34 lakh hectare area this year so far against 9.20 lakh hectare in the last year.
 Among other rabi crops, area under pulses remained lower at 45.60 lakh hectare against 54.20 lakh hectare, while that of oilseeds at 46.12 lakh hectare against 47.36 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
 Rice was sown in 6.27 lakh hectare area so far this season against 6.51 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
 Coarse cereals were sown in 46.12 lakh hectare as against 47.36 lakh hectare in the said period.
 Total area sown to all rabi crops remained lower at 148.23 lakh hectare so far this season, compared to 167.68 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. LUX MR

Wheat area down by 23pc, Punjab, MP lag behind

New Delhi, Dec 6 () Wheat sowing has picked up in the ongoing rabi season as the crop was planted in 4.28 per cent more area at 202.54 lakh hectare (ha) compared to the year-ago period, said a latest data released by the Agriculture Ministry on Friday.
Wheat is the main rabi crop, the sowing of which begins from October and harvesting from April onwards. Wheat was sown in 194.21 lakh hectare a year ago.
As per the ministry's latest data, wheat was sown in 8.34 lakh hectare more area so far in the ongoing rabi (winter) season of the 2019-20 crop year (July-June).
Higher coverage was reported from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.
Similarly, rice was sown in more area at 10.17 lakh hectare so far this season compared to 8.42 lakh hectare in the year-ago period, while coarse cereals was planted in 35.56 lakh hectare as against 32.75 lakh hectare.
However, area sown to pulses remained slightly lagging at 105.16 lakh hectare so far this rabi season as against 111.90 lakh hectare in the same season last year, the data showed.
Even area sown to oilseeds remained flat at 65.05 lakh hectare as against 66.10 lakh hectare.
Total area sown to all rabi crops remained higher at 418.47 lakh hectare so far this rabi season as against 413.36 lakh hectare in the year-ago period, the data showed. LUX BAL

Wheat sowing up 4.28% at 202.54 lakh ha so far

New Delhi, Jan 3 () Wheat sowing has risen 9.28 per cent to 312.8 lakh hectare so far in the ongoing rabi (winter) season from the year-ago period, thanks to the good weather.
Sowing of rabi crops begins in October and harvesting kicks off from March.
 As per the agriculture ministry's latest data, wheat sowing in this rabi season has not only exceeded last year's level but also crossed the average normal area of 305.58 lakh hectare.
 Wheat, the main rabi crop, was sown in 286.23 lakh hectare in the same period last season.
 Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Haryana saw higher area of sowing, the data showed.
 Better soil moisture helped farmers sow wheat in more area. The crop prospects are bright, a ministry official said.
 Besides, pulses acreage rose slightly to 146.24 lakh hectare as on today, when compared with 142.22 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
Oilseeds acreage remained almost at last year's level. Oilseed crops like mustard seed and groundnut were sown in 75.72 lakh hectare as against 75.71 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
Coarse cereals area was higher at 49.40 lakh hectare as against 43.82 lakh hectare, while that of rice rose to 16.16 lakh hectare from 13.98 lakh hectare in the said period.
Area under all rabi crops increased to 600.32 lakh hectare so far this rabi season of the 2019-20 crop year (July-June), as against 561.95 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. LUX LUX ANU

Wheat sowing up 9.28 pc on good weather

New Delhi, Dec 20 () Area sown to wheat, the main rabi crop, touched 278 lakh hectare (ha) so far in this season, about 90 per cent of the normal sowing area under this crop, according to agriculture ministry data released on Friday.
 The area sown to wheat crop is higher than 250 lakh hectare covered in the year-ago period.
 Currently, farmers are planting rabi crops, sowing of which normally begins from October and harvesting from April onwards.
 According to the ministry's data, more area coverage under wheat crop has been reported from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
 The current low temperature in the growing regions is expected to boost the prospects of wheat crop, said the ministry official.
 Besides wheat, rice has also been covered in more area at 12.35 lakh hectare so far in the ongoing rabi season of the 2019-20 crop year (July-June) from 10.11 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
 Sowing of pulses remained flat at 131.46 lakh hectare so far as against 131.38 lakh hectare a year ago.
 Coverage of coarse cereals has been slightly higher at 43.70 lakh hectare as against 40.10 lakh hectare, while that of area under oilseeds remained lower at 71.79 lakh hectare as against 73.08 lakh hectare in the said period.
 Total area sown to all rabi crops reached 537.21 lakh hectare so far in this rabi season, higher than 504.69 lakh hectare a year ago, the data showed.
 It may be noted that rabi crops have been sown in more than 90 per cent of its normal sowing area of 634 lakh hectare. LUX HRS

Jaipur, Mar 6 () Opposition BJP created an uproar in the Rajasthan Assembly over the Prime Minister crop insurance scheme, saying the state did not pay its share of the premium. The House was adjourned for one hour after the BJP members trooped into the Well. The BJP members cornered the government for not depositing the state's share of premium for the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana by December 31, 2019. They alleged that due to the negligence of the government, the farmers will not get benefit of the insurance scheme. Replying to a question asked by BJP MLA Vasudev Devnani, Agriculture Minister Lalchand Kataria said eligible farmers are getting benefits as per the provisions of the crop loan scheme. He also informed the House about the number of farmers who were insured since 2017. He said the scheme has been in force in the state since kharif season 2016 as per the guidelines of the Government of India. The crops of farmers were insured from kharif 2017 to rabi 2019-20. The minister also informed the House about the number of policies done in kharif 2017 (58.45 lakh), rabi 2017-18 (35.48 lakh), kharif 2018 (42.05 lakh), rabi 2018-19 (29.75 lakh), kharif 2019 (44.49 lakh) and rabi 2019-20 (38.24 lakh). Not satisfied with the answer, BJP members said the farmers will not get benefits because the Rajasthan government failed to deposit its share of premium by due date. BJP MLA Devnani told reporters outside the Assembly that the Centre deposited its share of Rs 2,115 crore but the state government did not pay its share of premium by due date, which was December 31, 2019. "Farmers who suffer loss will not get the benefit of the scheme because the state government has not deposited its share of premium. The Congress government is 'anti-farmer' and the chief minister and the agriculture minister should resign," he said. When the House met again, the Agriculture Minister informed the Assembly the cut-off date for paying insurance premium was only for farmers and not for the state. He said the state government has deposited state's complete share of premium for rabi crops 2018-19 and kharif crop 2018 and part payment of Rs 400 crore was also done against kharif 2019 and rabi 2019-20. The government on Tuesday hiked the minimum support price for wheat by Rs 110 to Rs 2,125 per quintal and mustard by Rs 400 to Rs 5,450 per quintal for the current crop year with an aim to boost production and income of the farmers. The decision to increase the MSPs (minimum support prices) was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (<keyword id="56977" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ccea" source="Orion">CCEA</keyword>) chaired by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>. <keyword id="133827" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="msp" source="Orion">MSP</keyword> is the rate at which the government buys grain from farmers. Currently, the government fixes MSPs for 23 crops grown in both <keyword id="50318" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kharif" source="Orion">Kharif</keyword> and rabi seasons. Sowing of rabi (winter) crops begins in October, immediately after the harvest of kharif (summer) crops. Wheat and mustard are major rabi crops. According to an official release, the CCEA has approved an increase in MSPs for six rabi crops for the 2022-23 crop year (July-June) and the 2023-24 marketing season. <keyword id="625304" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="wheat-msp" source="Orion">Wheat MSP</keyword> has been increased by Rs 110 to Rs 2,125 per quintal for this crop year from Rs 2,015 per quintal in the 2021-22 crop year. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/dog-protects-owner-person-1058859128?src=0WLROd4ZAS1hRiQJjLKEhw-1-43">Victoria Antonova / Shutterstock</a></div></div></div><ul><li>A Canadian "naturopathic doctor" recently blogged about giving a 4-year-old boy rabid dog saliva as a treatment for bad behaviour.</li><li>She said it was a homeopathic remedy made from heavily diluted saliva.</li><li>It's based on the idea that you can cure problems by giving someone tiny concentrations of something that would make them ill.</li><li>Reactions to her article have been scathing. </li><li>There is no scientific evidence that homeopathy works, and in some cases it can be fatal.</li></ul> A cognitive bias is when you have beliefs or preferences regardless of any evidence to the contrary. For instance, it's unlikely you'll ever change someone's mind when they are on the opposite end of the political spectrum to you, no matter how many statistics you throw at them about their party's failures.It happens a lot with scientific information too. Those who prefer to use alternative medicine such as homeopathy, for example, tend to do so even though there's no scientific evidence it works.Despite constant criticism and despair from scientists, homeopaths are still going strong. So much so, that one recently blogged about giving one of her patients dog saliva to treat his "bad behaviour."Anke Zimmermann, a Canadian who describes herself as a "naturopathic doctor", <a href="https://www.drzimmermann.org/successful-clinical-cases/a-child-with-aggression-and-behavioural-problems" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote about the controversial treatment on her website</a>. She described a boy called Jonah who was brought in to see her last October because of sleep and behavioural problems.Zimmermann said his problems included violence towards other children at preschool, hiding under tables, and growling. He also had a terrible fear of wolves, zombies and ghosts, she said.Zimmermann concluded the most likely explanation for this was because he was in a "dog state" from being bitten by a dog when he was two."The dog that bit him may have recently been vaccinated with the rabies vaccine or the dog bite in and of itself may have affected the boy with the rabies miasm," she wrote. "Either is possible and the phenomenon is well-known in homeopathy.<a href="http://www.homeopathytraining.co.uk/good-question/which-miasm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A miasm</a> is homeopathic term for "the ghost of the disease state still rampant in the energy system."She continued: "A bite from an animal, with or without rabies vaccination has the potential to imprint an altered state in the person who was bitten, in some ways similar to a rabies infection."Homeopathy is based on the idea that "like cures like," meaning if someone has a rash, you give them a highly diluted concoction of something that causes rashes, such as poison ivy.Not only is there no scientific evidence to support this, the remedies are often so diluted there is essentially none of the active ingredient in the water. Homeopathic remedies can also be fatal if the dose is too high and the active ingredient is something nasty. In 2016, the FDA investigated the deaths of 10 babies who were given <a href="http://www.sciencealert.com/a-homeopathic-teething-product-is-being-investigated-in-the-deaths-of-10-babies" target="_blank" rel="noopener">homeopathic teething tablets</a> that contained nightshade, a poison.Going on this theory that rabies would cure rabies, Zimmermann gave the boy lyssinum, a homeopathic pellet made from heavily diluted saliva of a rabid dog. Ingesting real rabid dog saliva can give you rabies, and kill you."Within a minute or two of giving him the remedy Jonah smiled at me very broadly and beautifully, as if all the lights had just gone on," she wrote. "We said our good-byes and I felt a warm feeling of hope for this boy."Responses to the article haven't been quite so positive. Zimmermann's story received a lot of attention this month after several news sites covered it.Bonnie Henry, British Columbia's senior health officer, told CBC News that she would write to Canada's health ministry because of her grave concerns about the dog saliva remedy."There's no way I can understand why we would have anything that was meant to be saliva of a rabid dog approved for use in this country," she said.Jen Gunter, a gynecologist, <a href="https://drjengunter.wordpress.com/2018/04/15/naturopath-claims-to-treat-aggression-in-children-with-diluted-dog-rabies-saliva-no-really/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blogged about the story on her website</a>. She said that not only is it ridiculous to try and cure someone with what is essentially magic water, using rabies in any form would be highly dangerous."Naturopaths who use this must believe that somewhere, at some point in time after 1895 some brave naturopath was able to get saliva from a rabid dog without getting rabies and then handle the virus safely to dilute it out of existence," she wrote."Getting the virus would not have been impossible in those days... Louis Pasteur and Edward Jenner were working with viruses that could have killed them without a level 2 biosafety lab, but then again they didn't believe that the viruses could kill via ghost action."So either the boy was given active rabies, which would likely kill him, or he was given plain old water, and his behaviour improved because of a happy coincidence.Governments have been cracking down on homeopathy in the past year or so. In 2016, the National Health Service in the <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/nhs-funds-homeopathy-bogus-2016-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UK was still funding homeopathy</a>, but last year <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/britain-bans-homeopathy-funding-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said it would stop</a>. In the US, the FDA is also being more discerning about how <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/new-ftc-homeopathy-rules-2016-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">homeopathic treatments are labeled</a>.But homeopathy is one of the most popular forms of alternative medicine, with an <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1475491617300231" target="_blank" rel="noopener">estimated 0.7-9.8% of the population in various countries using it</a>.As far as we know, there isn't anyone walking around with rabies as a result of their homeopathic pills and potions - <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/oct/30/homeopaths-offer-services-fight-Ebola" target="_blank" rel="noopener">or Ebola for that matter</a> - suggesting homeopaths aren't actually using active diseases in their treatments.
