To bring transparency in expenses and curb mis-selling, markets regulator SEBI has asked alternative investment funds (<keyword id="1006423" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="aifs" source="Orion">AIFs</keyword>) to provide an option of "direct plan" for investors and introduced a trail model for distribution commission. In addition, the regulator came out with guidelines with respect to excluding an investor from an investment in <keyword id="161906" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="aif" source="Orion">AIF</keyword>. This came after the regulator observed inconsistency and lack of adequate disclosure in Private <keyword id="17098646" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="placement-memorandum" source="Orion">Placement Memorandum</keyword> (PPM) with respect to certain industry practices. The new rules are aimed at providing flexibility to investors for investing in AIFs, bringing transparency in expenses and curbing mis-selling, the <keyword id="6355630" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="securities-and-exchange-board-of-india" source="Orion">Securities and Exchange Board of India</keyword> (SEBI) said in two separate circulars. The framework pertaining to the direct plan will come into force from May 1, while those related to excluding an investor from an AIF investment will become effective immediately. Directing AIFs, SEBI said,"schemes of AIFs shall have an option of 'Direct Plan' for investors" and through such direct plans, investors will have the opportunity to participate in an AIF without having to pay any distribution fee or placement fee. AIFs will have to ensure that investors who approach the AIF through a registered intermediary, which is separately charging the investor any fee such as an advisory fee or portfolio management fee, are on-boarded through a direct plan only. Introducing a trail model for distribution commission, SEBI said that category III AIFs would charge distribution fee from investors only on an equal trail basis. It means no upfront distribution fee would be charged by such AIFs directly or indirectly from their investors. Further, any distribution charge paid would be only from the management fee received by the managers of such category III AIFs. For other two categories, AIFs may pay up to one-third of the total distribution fee to the distributors on upfront basis, and the remaining distribution fee would be paid to the distributors on equal trail basis over the tenure of the fund. Also, SEBI asked AIFs to disclose distribution fees to the investors at the time of on-boarding. The capital markets regulator has already barred upfront commissions for portfolio management services and mutual funds. Upfront commission is a one-time payment made by a fund to a distributor on selling a scheme to an investor. Trail commission, on the other hand, is a recurring fee paid to a distributor until the investment is withdrawn. With regard to excusing or excluding an investor, SEBI said that an AIF may excuse its investor from participating in a particular investment in certain circumstances. Those circumstances include if an investor, based on the opinion of a legal professional, confirms that its participation in the investment opportunity would be in violation of rule; or if the investor, as part of an agreement signed with the AIF, had disclosed to the manager that its participation in such investment opportunity would be in contravention to the internal policy of the investor. Further, the manager will have to ensure that terms of such agreement with the investor include reporting of any change in the disclosed internal policy, to the AIF, within 15 days of such change. Moreover, an AIF may exclude an investor from participating in a particular investment opportunity, if the manager of the AIF is satisfied that the participation of such investor in the investment opportunity would lead to the scheme of the AIF being in violation of rule or would result in material adverse effect on the scheme of the AIF. If the investor of an AIF is also an AIF or any other investment vehicle, such investor may be partially excluded from participation in an investment opportunity, to the extent of the contribution of the investment vehicle's underlying investors who are to be excused from such investment opportunity. The manager will have to record the rationale for such exclusions along with the supporting documents. In February 2020, the regulator introduced a template for PPM for AIFs, in order to ascertain that a certain minimum level of information in a simple and comparable format is disclosed to investors. The PPM template provides for disclosure with respect to direct plan for investors, and constituents of fees that may be charged by the AIF, including distribution fee. Just Look Up: Giant asteroid the size of Qutub Minar to pass dangerously close to Earth

Supertech's illegal twin towers in <keyword id="18858" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="noida" source="Orion">Noida</keyword>, which are taller than Delhi's <keyword id="79652" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="qutub-minar" source="Orion">Qutub Minar</keyword>, will become India's highest structures ever to be demolished on August 28. The buildings measuring a little over 100 metres will literally collapse like a house of cards in a process that would take less than 15 seconds for them to come down, according to project officials. The demolition would be done through a controlled implosion technique for which over 3,700 kg of explosive will be used in the eye-popping event that would also leave behind a whopping 55,000 tonnes of debris to be managed. Mumbai-based <keyword id="2638505" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="edifice" source="Orion">Edifice</keyword> Engineering along with their South African partner firm <keyword id="13392130" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jet-demolitions" source="Orion">Jet Demolitions</keyword> is carrying out the job, which is certain to make it into civil engineering feats of the world. "It will take nine to 10 seconds for all the explosives to blast in a series making a loud noise. After the blasts, the structures won't come down all at once and would take four to five seconds to come down completely," Edifice Engineering partner <keyword id="13232556" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="utkarsh-mehta" source="Orion">Utkarsh Mehta</keyword> told PTI. "The time for dust dissipation is estimated to be 10 minutes," said <keyword id="6371425" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mehta" source="Orion">Mehta</keyword>, whose company has previously executed demolition of illegal residential complexes in Kerala's Maradu, Telangana's secretariat and central prison, and old Motera stadium in Gujarat, among others. Project officials said the explosives used for demolition include detonators, emulsions and shock tubes, which have explosion material in gel or powdered form. "These explosives are not very strong in nature but when used in large quantities, they are able to break concrete. These explosives are sold in a regulated manner and strictly after permission from various government agencies," an official said. The demolition of Supertech's twin towers in Noida's Sector 93A comes in pursuance of a Supreme Court order that found the structures to be illegal and built in violation of norms. According to the estimates prepared by the project officials, the demolition of the Apex (32 storeys) and Cyane (29 storeys) would leave behind approximately 35,000 cubic metres of debris to be cleared and clouds of dust to dissipate. Noida Authority's General Manager (Planning) Ishtiaq Ahmed said 21,000 cubic metres of the debris would be moved out and dumped at an isolated land measuring five to six hectares in city's work circle seven limits and the remaining would get accommodated in the basement areas of the twin towers where a pit has been made. "The post demolition debris would be managed scientifically as per rules and guidelines. A final decision on it would come from the regional pollution control board which is examining a report from Edifice Engineering on debris management," Ahmed told PTI. According to Mehta, around 1,200 to 1,300 "truck-loads" of debris would have to be moved out from the site. "However, there has been one good thing of late. The Jet Demolitions team has been tracking the flow of the wind for the last one week or so and found it flowing towards the West. If the same pattern continues, then most of the dust would blow towards the front side of the twin towers, a road followed by an open city park," he said. The favourable wind direction would prevent the dust from settling within the premises of Emerald Court and ATS Village societies – both in close proximity to the twin towers. Though, all the debris will not go to waste as it will yield an estimated 4,000 tonnes of iron and steel that Edifice plans to use to recover a part of the demolition cost. Meanwhile, the Noida Authority has a construction and demolition waste management plant in Sector 80, with a capacity of 300 tonnes per day. However, considering the rubble that would be moved out, it is still not clear whether it would be processed there and if yes, then how and over what duration of time. According to project details, the Apex tower has 11 primary blast floors -- where all columns on the floor will have explosives fixed and blasted -- and seven secondary floors -- where 60 per cent of the columns will be blasted. Cyane has one less primary blast floor. The charged columns are wrapped in wired mesh and geotextile cloth to prevent debris from flying and damaging nearby buildings. There will be six layers each for floors between the basement and sixth floors and four layers each on the upper floors, according to the details. For the protection of Emerald Court and ATS Village, both societies will also have geotextile covering. About 225 tonnes of wired mesh made of galvanised iron and geotextile in 110-km length would be used in the entire process.

Demolition of Noida twin towers will leave behind 35,000 cubic metres of debris

New Delhi, Jul 7 () ASI-protected monuments were reopened for the public on Monday but the footfall on day one was very low, even as the number of coronavirus cases in the national capital crossed the one lakh-mark. Qutub Minar, a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Site, attracted maximum crowd of just 100 visitors, sources said. The 12th century minaret on regular days gets a footfall in the range of 8,000-10,000, according to Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials. The footfall at other sites was -- Humayun's Tomb (70-80), Purana Quila (20-22), Safdarjung Tomb (8) and Jantar Mantar (12), roughly, as per official figures, the sources said. Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb and a host of other centrally-protected monuments in Delhi on Monday were reopened for visitors after being shut for over three months due to the COVID-19 crisis. However, wearing of masks is mandatory and no one is allowed to enter if they are not wearing it, a senior official said. The Red Fort, which on regular days is closed every Monday, remained closed and reopened on Tuesday. "While the monuments have been reopened, visitors can book tickets in either of the two slots -- forenoon slot which starts in the morning and ends at 12 noon -- and afternoon slot from 12 noon to 6 pm. In each slot, a maximum of 1,500 visitors will be allowed," the official said. So, around 12 noon in the afternoon slot on Tuesday, out of the 1,500 tickets for the Red Fort, 1,478 were still unpurchased, according to live ticketing figures accessed from the ASI website. Around 4:15 pm, the unbought tickets for the Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar stood at 934 and 1,438, respectively, while the same figure stood at 987 for the Safdarjung Tomb, according to official figures. Delhi's ASI-protected monuments have been reopened for the public as per the directions of the culture ministry. All protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) as outlined by the ministry are being followed, including social distancing and sanitisation measures at these heritage sites, officials said. Incidentally, the monuments reopened for the public on a day Delhi COVID-19 tally breached the one lakh-mark as the city recorded 1,379 fresh coronavirus cases, while the death toll from the disease mounted to 3,115. There are 173 monuments in Delhi, protected under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), including three UNESCO World Heritage Sites -- Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar; Safdarjung Tomb, Purana Quila, Tughlakabad Fort, Hauz Khas, Jantar Mantar and Firoz Shah Kotla. According to the officials, on regular days, the Red Fort gets an average daily footfall in the range of 8,000-12,000 while the Humayun's Tomb gets 6,000-10,000, and both these monuments are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites. However, the Humayun's Tomb attracts more foreign visitors in general, they said. A total of 3,691 centrally-protected monuments and archaeological sites maintained by the ASI across the country were shut from March 17 in view of the coronavirus crisis. The officials said the reopening of sites have been done in compliance with the city and district authorities. The culture ministry recently had issued a set of protocols, saying only those monuments which are in non-containment zones will be reopened. The number of containment zones in the city on Monday stood at 455. As per the protocol, entry tickets being issued by e-mode and only e-payments acceptable at parking and cafeteria at the sites. Tmesipteris oblanceolata is a rare and understudied fern species found in New Caledonia, an island nation in the Southwest Pacific, and neighboring islands such as Vanuatu. To study the planet, lead researchers of the study, Jaume Pellicer and Oriane Hidalgo embarked on a meticulous journey to collect and analyse samples of Tmesipteris in 2023. Their research involved isolating the nuclei from thousands of cells, staining them with dye, and measuring the bound dye to estimate the genome size. Their efforts paid off when they confirmed T. oblanceolata's genome size, which is about 7% larger than P. japonica's. "For a long time, we thought that breaking the previous size record of Paris japonica was going to be an impossible mission, but once again, the limits of biology have surpassed our most optimistic predictions,” remarks Dr Pellicer. However, having a larger genome is not typically advantageous, as it often results in slower growth and less efficient photosynthesis. This is because larger genomes necessitate larger cells and longer replication times, which can influence how species grow, reproduce, and adapt to their environments. But it does provide fascinating insights into the adaptability and survival of these plants in their native habitats. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai wrote to Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, requesting him to ban the entry of vehicles non-compliant with BS-VI norms into Delhi from neighbouring states in Delhi-NCR. He also requested an emergency meeting of neighbouring states' environment ministers. Rai said, "Looking at the rise in the level of pollution in the last two days, construction has been banned in Delhi since yesterday. Today there has been an improvement in the level of pollution as compared to yesterday. The situation is still serious. I am writing to the Central government requesting that the Union Environment Minister call an emergency meeting of Environment ministers of all five states immediately. The orders of CAQM are not being implemented in other states. Rules are being made, and CAQM is giving directions, but in the whole NCR, rules are being violated. This is the problem of the whole of North India." As the Air Quality Index (AQI) in several parts of Delhi-NCR is reeling under the 'severe' category, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday sought responses from the Chief Secretaries of the affected states and directed to take immediate remedial action and submit the action taken report before the Tribunal. NGT in a statement said that immediate action is required for the prevention and control of air pollution in these cities so as to ensure better air quality to the residents. "In view of the NGT seeks response of Chief Secretaries of the States where the cities AQI has dipped to severe, very poor and poor, are directed to take immediate remedial action and submit action taken report before the Tribunal," added the statement. Through these trusts, investors get exposure to diversified regular income-generating real estate and infrastructure assets. "REITs and InvITs are recognised as strong alternative financial instruments to raise funds against the cash generating infrastructure and real estate projects. For investors, these instruments provide exposure to real estate or infrastructure assets and offer diversification of risk from regular asset classes like equity, debt and gold and generate regular income," NSE Indices CEO Mukesh Agarwal said. The weights of securities within the index will be based on their free-float market capitalisation, subject to a security cap of 33 per cent each, and the aggregate weight of the top three securities is capped at 72 per cent. Of the 80,000 tonnes of construction waste left behind by the Twin Towers, 30,000 will be removed and recycled. However, wearing of masks will be mandatory, and no one will be allowed to enter if they are not wearing it, a senior official said. "Delhi's ASI-protected monuments have been reopened for the public as per the directions of the culture ministry. However, Red Fort, which on regular days is closed every Monday, will remain closed today," he said. All protocols and SOPs as outlined by the ministry will be followed, including social distancing and sanitisation measures at these heritage sites. Incidentally, the monuments reopened for the public on a day Delhi COVID-19 tally breached the 1 lakh-mark as the city recorded 1379 fresh coronavirus cases, while the death toll from the disease mounted to 3,115. There are 173 monuments in Delhi, protected under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), including three UNESCO World Heritage Sites -- Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar; Safdarjung Tomb, Purana Quila, Tughlakabad Fort, Hauz Khas and Firoz Shah Kotla. "However, visitors can book tickets in either of the two slots -- forenoon slot which starts in the morning and ends at 12 noon; and afternoon slot from 12 noon to 6 PM. In each slot, a maximum of 1500 visitors will be allowed," the official said. According the officials, on regular days, Red Fort gets an average daily footfall in the range of 8,000-12,000; Humayun's Tomb gets 6,000-10,000 and Qutub Minar gets 8,000-10,000. However, Humayun's Tomb attracts more foreign visitors, they said. As many as 3,691 Centrally-protected monuments and archaeological sites maintained by the ASI across the country were shut from March 17 in view of the coronavirus crisis. The official said, the reopening of sites have been done in compliance with the city and district authorities. The culture ministry recently had issued a set of protocols, saying only those monuments which are in non-containment zones will be reopened. The number of containment zones in the city on Monday stood at 455. As per the protocol, entry tickets being issued by e-mode and only e-payments acceptable at parking and cafeteria at the sites. At the entrance of every monument or site, all visitors shall share their phone numbers with the person designated for the purpose by the ASI to help in contact tracing if and when required, the protocol said. The ASI can restrict access to vulnerable and interior parts of any monument while visitors shall be asked to stick to the time limits inside the monument, as far as possible, the ministry had said. But in India, they are in news for the right ones. <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> has entered into an alliance with the <keyword id="6355180" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Archaeological-Survey-of-India">Archaeological Survey of India</keyword> (ASI) to create panoramic 360 degree views of 100 popular and famous monuments of India. 
 This has been done in various other countries across the globe and has proved to be fruitful for both Google and its users. Google will create virtual walkthroughs of monuments such as the <keyword id="6355354" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Taj-Mahal">Taj Mahal</keyword>, the Qutub Minar and the caves of Ajanta and Ellora. The list has not been finalised yet, but the <keyword id="101796" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Culture">Ministry of Culture</keyword> will do that soon. With this move, people from all over the country and across the world would be able to tour through those famous monuments with ease in the virtual world. 
 Google’s Street View Trekker will be used to create the virtual walkthroughs. The search giant has already created walkthroughs of places such as the Grand Canyon in the US and the <keyword id="36539" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="eiffel-tower">Eiffel Tower</keyword> in <keyword id="6354785" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="France">France</keyword>. The Indian monuments will be an interesting addition for the world to watch and appreciate.
