The plastic pollution crisis has been an ongoing environmental problem for ages now.<br /><br /> It has been identified as an environmental problem similar in scope and complexity to global challenges like climate change.<br /><br /> In fact, it is contributing to climate change directly, through its predominant disposal methods which still largely include burning and dumping. <br /><br /> The <keyword id="151519" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="queensland-university-of-technology" source="Orion">Queensland University of Technology</keyword> research team, from the branches of chemistry and law, recently published their multi-pronged approach in <keyword id="15574067" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="polymer-chemistry" source="Orion">Polymer Chemistry</keyword>.<br /><br /> The researchers are Dr Hope <keyword id="11011" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="johnson" source="Orion">Johnson</keyword>, Dr Lewis Chambers, Dr <keyword id="15574063" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="joshua-holloway" source="Orion">Joshua Holloway</keyword>, <keyword id="15574066" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="annastasia-bousgas" source="Orion">Annastasia Bousgas</keyword>, Professor Afshin Akhtar-Khavari, Associate Professor <keyword id="15574064" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="james-blinco" source="Orion">James Blinco</keyword>, and ARC Laureate Fellow Professor Christopher Barner-Kowollik, and they are part of <keyword id="803867" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="qut" source="Orion">QUT</keyword>'s Centre for Materials Science and Centre for a Waste Free World.<br /><br /> Professor Barner-Kowollik said one of the biggest challenges in addressing plastic pollution was tracing the polluting plastic back to the source.<br /><br /> "Tracing plastic resolves the anonymity of plastic waste," Professor Barner-Kowollik said.<br /><br /> "If a technology existed that allowed to give unique 'DNA' to each batch of plastic that was produced, plastic waste could be traced back to the producer, given the information stored in the 'DNA' could be simply read-out."<br /><br /> Professor Barner-Kowollik said there were several emerging advances in polymer chemistry that could play a part in identifying plastic.<br /><br /> One solution could be chemically labelling batches of plastic production using sequence-defined polymers, that could be decoded in a way similar to DNA, although at this point reading information from sequence-defined polymers is challenging. However, new and simple technologies for reading information from such sequence-defined polymers embedded into plastics are emerging.<br /><br /> If polymer science can develop the means of uniquely identifying plastics and tracing each piece back to its producer, there still remains the issue of enforcing responsibility -- which is where the legal researchers around Dr Hope Johnson come in.<br /><br /> "One of the first challenges with an international problem such as this is the obvious one of jurisdiction, and also where in the regulatory process we can best intervene to create sustainable change," Professor Afshin Akhtar-Khavari said.<br /><br /> "A considerable challenge is the implementation in international frameworks so that malicious actors cannot identify loopholes<br /><br /> "A careful and coordinated international approach is of the essence, yet establishing it will require initial careful research into the underpinning international governance principles and subsequent coordinated approaches for implementation."<br /><br /> The researchers describe their paper as a "discussion starter," not only on the plausibility of using sequence-defined polymers for coding and reading 'DNA' embedded in plastics and the associated governance challenges but also for a broader conversation.<br /><br /> "Research is done with focus, but sometimes there needs to be a broader lens," Professor Barner-Kowollik said.<br /><br /> "There is a critical need for the social and natural sciences to work more closely together in the future, breaking currently still prevailing siloed structures."<br /><br /> The combined approach, of polymer science and international law, is looking at the single outcome of enforcing responsibility for polluters.<br /><br /> The paper says that identifying the people responsible for plastic pollution could lead to a phasing out of plastics. <br /><br /><strong>SEE ALSO:<br /><a target="_blank" class="c-link c-message_attachment__title_link" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/space/news/humans-will-be-able-to-live-for-longer-periods-on-the-moon-in-this-decade-says-nasa/articleshow/95652408.cms">Humans will be able to live for longer periods on the Moon in this decade, says NASA</a><br /><a target="_blank" class="c-link c-message_attachment__title_link" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/health/news/ai-blood-testing-tech-that-detects-lung-cancer-can-now-detect-liver-cancers-too/articleshow/95652878.cms">AI blood testing tech that detects lung cancer can now detect liver cancers too</a></strong><br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Quinn Dombrowski/Flickr</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>As someone who lives by himself, let me just say my cognitive dissonance is off the charts.</p><p>According to a <a href="http://nutritionreviews.oxfordjournals.org/content/73/9/594">new study</a> from the Queensland University of Technology, in Australia, people who live the solitary life maintain far worse diets than people with roommates. </p><p>Researchers believe the effect stems from a combination of laziness and economics. Since healthy foods are perishable and hard to consume all at once, not to mention time-consuming to prepare, many singletons look to cheap microwaveable foods for sustenance. </p><p>The trend of living alone <a href="http://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2014/09/11/growing-number-of-people-living-solo-can-pose-challenges">has been on the rise</a> in the US since the 1920s. Back then, only 5% of people lived alone. Today, 27% do. That rise coincides, perhaps indirectly, with the nation's ongoing obesity epidemic. Today, <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/obesity-overweight.htm">more than two-thirds</a> of the country is overweight or obese.</p><p>The new research suggests there may be a connection to people's living situation.</p><p><span>For example, a person who is bereaved or divorced may have previously relied on their late partner to prepare meals, said co-author of the study Dr. Katherine Hanna, professor in QUT's school of exercise and nutrition sciences, in <a href="https://www.qut.edu.au/news/news?news-id=98917">a statement</a>.</span></p><p><span><span>"The absence of support or encouragement to comply with healthy eating guidelines and difficulty in managing portion control were also factors influencing diet," Hanna said.</span></span></p><p><span><span>To carry out their study, Hanna and her colleagues analyzed 41 past studies on the relationship between people's living situation and their eating habits. They found people who lived alone ate a smaller diversity of foods and lower overall quantity of healthy food groups, like fruits and vegetables.</span></span></p><p>Diet isn't the only casualty of the solitary life.</p><p>Researchers <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/talking-to-strangers-is-healthy-2015-9">have repeatedly found</a> that regular social interaction keeps us healthy. When demographers investigate how the people with the longest life spans fly past their 100th birthdays, they find a strong sense of community keeps cropping up.</p><p>Be they neighbors, roommates, or loved ones, the takeaway is the same. People need people. </p><p>On the other hand, living alone does have one obvious upside. With no one around to cast judgment, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/23/garden/the-freedom-and-perils-of-living-alone.html?_r=1&amp;pagewanted=all">people are free to be</a> weird.
