The Lok Sabha elections 2024 are no different.<br /><br /><keyword id="19941423" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Independent-candidate" source="keywords">Independent candidate</keyword> from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, <keyword id="21244546" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pandit-Keshav-Dev" source="keywords">Pandit Keshav Dev</keyword>, decided to make the most of what the <keyword id="19895782" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Election-Commission" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Election Commission" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Election Commission">Election Commission</keyword> has allotted to him as the poll symbol- a pair of slippers. <br /><br />Aiming to build recall of people, Dev was seen sporting a garland of 7 slippers around his neck during his campaign.<br /><br />Lok Sabha polls will be held in seven phases beginning April 19. Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of MPs, 80, to Parliament, will vote in all seven phases.<br /><br />Voting for phases one and two will be held on April 19 and April 26. Next, the state will once again poll in phases three and four on May 7 and May 13. The Uttar Pradesh electorate will also vote in phases five, six and seven on May 20, May 23 and June 1 respectively. <br /><br />Aligarh will go for polls in the second phase on April 26. The counting of votes will take place on June 4.<br /><br />In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Satish Kumar Gautam won from the Aligarh garnering 656215 votes. BJP defeated BSP Dr. Ajeet Baliyan who got 426954 votes.<br /><br />In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 71 seats with a 42.6 per cent vote share, while Congress settled for only 2 seats with 7.5 per cent of votes. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Trump is railing against Nikki Haley for trying to get non-traditional Republicans to vote in New Hampshire.</li><li>He once used open primaries to squash Ted Cruz in 2016.</li></ul><p>Former President Donald Trump might owe Sen. Ted Cruz an apology.</p><p>And no, it's not about the long list of things Trump <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-ted-cruz-shouldnt-even-exist-endorsement-desantis-2024-1">has said</a> about Cruz and his family. Rather, it's about how Cruz and his allies complained in 2016 about how non-Republican voters helped hand the nomination to Trump. They even tried to formally change the party's rules to incentivize states to move away from elections that allowed independent and possibly even Democratic voters to weigh in on the Republican presidential race.</p><p>Trump ran away with the 2016 Republican presidential nomination in part due to his sheer dominance in these so-called "open primaries." While at the same time, Cruz <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ted-cruz-2016-most-fun-in-my-life-running-again-2024-12">struggled</a> to keep up by winning in closed primaries and caucuses.</p><p>Now, Trump is sounding the alarm at the possibility that former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley could use his old playbook against him.</p><p>"As you know, Nikki Haley, in particular, is counting on the Democrats and liberals to infiltrate your Republican primary, you know that, that's what's happening," Trump said at a rally in New Hampshire on Tuesday evening. "A group of people coming in that are not Republicans and it's artificially boosting her numbers here, although we are still leading her by a lot."</p><p>It's worth noting that there is nothing illegal about Haley's strategy. New Hampshire law has long allowed unaffiliated voters to vote in the presidential primary. At issue is a long-running discussion that far pre-dates Trump about who should pick either of the major party's presidential nominees. Long ago, party bosses held sway but the progressive era<a target="_blank" href="https://www.history.com/news/political-conventions-change"><u> saw a push for broader primary elections</u></a>.</p><p>While some Republicans detest more open primaries, such rules challenge candidates to start building the broader coalition they would need to win the White House in a general election. It's a fact Haley's campaign is quick to bring up.</p><p>"Nikki has always believed that the Republican Party has to be about addition, not subtraction. Republicans have lost the popular vote in the last seven of the eight elections," Haley spokesperson AnnMarie Graham-Barnes said in a statement to Insider. "We lost races we should have won in 2018, 2020, and 2022. If Republicans want to start winning again, we have to start bringing in people fed up with Joe Biden's disastrous administration, not pushing people away."</p><p>Most states operate at least a somewhat open primary. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncsl.org/elections-and-campaigns/state-primary-election-types">only eight states</a> have completely closed presidential primaries — most notably the delegate-rich state of Florida.</p><h2><strong>Trump once ran up the score in open primaries.</strong></h2><p>Trump's advantage in open primaries in 2016 was unmistakable.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2016/03/22/trumps-big-advantage-open-primaries.html">A CNBC tally from March 2016</a> found that the future president won a greater percentage of primaries and caucuses in states with open contests. There's not a perfect explanation as to why though. Entrance and exit polling at the same didn't show independents giving Trump a major advantage — such surveys can be unreliable though. The split-screen between the two types of contests began almost immediately. Despite holding a polling advantage in the weeks leading up to the 2016 Iowa caucuses, Trump narrowly lost the state to Cruz. Iowa, unlike New Hampshire, is only partially open since the state requires voters to register with a party to caucus. Voters can change their affiliation on caucus night.</p><p>Trump's rout also stuck with Cruz's allies. Pro-Cruz delegates came to the 2016 Republican National Convention <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/story/2016/05/republican-primary-rules-donald-trump-223136">determined to change </a>the party's rules by incentivizing states to move away from open primaries or doing away with the practice altogether. Their efforts never amounted to any major changes.</p><p>The former president's campaign did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment. But his apparent reversal on open primaries is quite simply yet another sign of his hostile takeover of the GOP. Trump is no longer an outsider now. And as such, he sees little need for such voters.</p>

Nowhere is that more obvious than their recent inflation estimates, which have been off target.</p><p>Both sides finally connected on Wednesday, as April's inflation report aligned with what experts expected. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-cpi-food-energy-gas-prices-consumer-price-index-2024-5"><u>Consumer Price Index increased 3.4%</u></a>, a slight cooling from March's 3.5% year-over-year increase, writes Business Insider's Madison Hoff.</p><p>But don't start counting your summer interest-rate cuts before they're announced. As much as investors are begging for the Fed's policy to loosen up, <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/fed-rate-cuts-stock-market-crash-sp500-outlook-ed-yardeni-2024-5"><u>rushing things could spell trouble</u></a>, writes BI's Jennifer Sor.</p><p>Market vet Ed Yardeni warned a June or July rate cut would create a market "meltup." Think of it like a sugar high: Stocks surge initially from the relief but eventually suffer a steep drop.</p><p>The first cut seems more likely to come in the fall. After all, Fed Chair Jerome Powell hasn't indicated he's in a rush.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html"><u>CME's FedWatch Tool</u></a> seems to agree, with interest-rate traders viewing the September Fed meeting as the favorite for rates to drop.</p><p><strong>That timeline means the first rate cut will precede the US presidential election.</strong></p><p>Powell has said the election won't influence the central bank's decision. And he does have ties to both candidates — former President Donald Trump nominated him, President Joe Biden renominated him. But it's hard not to see how lowering rates for the first time so close to the election <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/federal-reserve-jerome-powell-election-trump-biden-president-interest-rates-2024-3"><u>couldn't have an impact</u></a>.</p><p>The economy always weighs heavy on the mind of the American voter, but even more so now. Inflation, home prices, and the cost of education and healthcare are top concerns for many voters heading into November.</p><p>On Wednesday, Biden and Trump agreed to face off in two debates, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-trolls-trump-offers-debates-2024-5"><u>the first coming in June</u></a>. He boasted about how he'll put New York in play against Hillary Clinton.</span></p><p><span>And in unscripted Trump fashion, he told a lengthy story about one of his favorite New York-related topics: his mid-1980s takeover of the Wollman Rink renovations in Central Park, just near Trump Tower. He spoke of how the city screwed up its years-long effort to get the ice rink up and running, and that he was able to have it finished in a matter of months.</span></p><p><span>"This was no joke," a woman in the crowd said, as the audience laughed at his pot-shots directed at 1980s New York politicians with whom they were all familiar.</span></p><p>Speaking in front of a small crowd of about 100 people in midtown Manhattan, Trump accepted the Conservative Party's nomination, which is possible under a quirky New York election law that allows multiple parties to nominate the same ticket. It was part of a Manhattan double feature for Trump on Wednesday. He appeared along with Hillary Clinton as MSNBC's Commander-in-Chief Forum later.</p><p>For Trump, the earlier event was a rare occasion that hearkened back to earlier in the summer of the presidential campaign. The speech Trump gave following his acceptance was unscripted. No teleprompters.</p><p>The Republican nominee promised to challenge Clinton in New York, where he's trailing miserably in the polls. He said his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-didnt-ask-mexico-to-pay-for-the-wall-2016-8" target="_blank">recent trip to Mexico</a> "worked out really well." If the country is independent, it will face the fact that it has no currency, no central bank, and a chorus of economists who believe the nation will exist on the brink of "failed state" status (<a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/scottish-independence/11102126/Scottish-referendum-Alone-Scotland-will-go-back-to-being-a-failed-state.html">that last moniker comes from Glaswegian historian Niall Ferguson</a>). The nationalists, of course, believe the opposite: That government from London has milked the country of its rightful oil revenues and can't be trusted to maintain proper levels of spending on health, education and infrastructure.</p>
<p>Or, if Scotland remains part of Great Britain, it will wake up with a giant hangover headache - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-scottish-independence-campaign-parties-on-despite-polls-showing-the-no-camp-ahead-2014-9">they're already partying North of the border</a> - and the sound of the entire world saying "never mind!" And everything will go back to normal.</p>

<p>Tennis champ <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/scottish-independence/11103345/Andy-Murray-finally-reveals-views-on-Scottish-independence.html">Andy Murray has revealed that he favors voting "Yes,"</a> hours before the poll.</p>
<p>Britain's quirky TV broadcasting rules have gone into effect which prevent the major TV channels from commenting on the vote while the voting takes place, lest they influence the result. So all the news is coming from the web and print outlets. <a href="http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/broadcasting/broadcast-codes/broadcast-code/elections/">Here's the relevant news blackout rule</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Discussion and analysis of election and referendum issues must finish when the poll opens. (This refers to the opening of actual polling stations. This rule does not apply to any poll conducted entirely by post.)</p>
<p>Business Insider will, of course, be providing its regular ongoing coverage of the vote.</p>
<p>About <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/2fd2a2fe-3efb-11e4-a861-00144feabdc0.html#axzz3DMvizU8K">4.3 million, or 97% of the electorate</a> have registered to vote. The vote has been extended to 16-year-olds, and thousands of teenagers will also be voting as a result. Long lines are expected at polling stations, <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/2fd2a2fe-3efb-11e4-a861-00144feabdc0.html#axzz3DMvizU8K">the Financial Times says</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Scotland has set up 5,579 polling stations, which means typically there will be no more than 800 voters allocated to each polling station, in a bid to avoid any large queues. The polls opened at 7am and will close at 10pm.</p>
<p>The real fun comes when the polls close this evening at 10 p.m. The final result won't be known for hours afterward, with individual council areas reporting totals on a rolling basis. Here's a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/scottish-referendum-election-night-schedule-2014-9">rough schedule of how that's likely to happen (below)</a>. Note that the crucial halfway point looks like it's going to come at about 3 am.</p>

SCOTLAND IS VOTING ON ITS INDEPENDENCE RIGHT NOW

<p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Rob Quist with his wife, Bonni, and daughter, Halladay, after he conceded on Thursday night.</p>Democrats are regrouping after losing the race for Montana's open House of Representatives seat on Thursday, just one day after Republican candidate Greg Gianforte was charged with assaulting a reporter.<p>Gianforte's win didn't come as much of a surprise in a state that President Donald Trump won by 20 points in November - and many Democrats are already moving on.</p><p>"There are 300 districts in America that are better for Democrats than Montana at large," Steve Schale, a Florida-based Democratic strategist, told Business Insider.</p><p>Most Democrats are relieved and encouraged that their candidate, folk musician Rob Quist, lost by just six points, even after national Republican groups poured twice as much money into the race as their Democratic counterparts.</p><p>"The fact that the GOP had to spend more than $6 million to defend a reliably Republican House seat" in a state that Trump won handily "is great news for Democrats," Democratic strategist Holly Shulman wrote in an email to Business Insider.</p><p>But if there are lessons to be learned from Montana, Schale said, it's that a better candidate, not more money, could possibly have changed the outcome.</p><p>"You have to have an extraordinary candidate to win in places like this," he said, adding that Quist was "arguably a third-tier candidate" - too "quirky" and, given his left-of-center views, "ideologically out of step" with Montana, where successful Democrats are generally center-right.</p><p>While some liberal activists were frustrated by the fact that national Democratic groups held back on funding Quist's campaign, Schale said it was strategic.</p><p>"The road from zero percent to 46 or 47 percent is about as difficult as walking up your driveway," Schale said. "But the road from 47 to 50 is like climbing Mt. Everest without oxygen."</p><p>Rather than spending just enough money "to lose with dignity" in places like Montana, Democrats might want to focus their resources on races that are winnable, prioritizing next month's special election in Georgia's sixth district over more difficult races, like the one in Utah to replace Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who will step down in June. (The seat Gianforte will occupy was vacated by former Rep. Ryan Zinke when President Donald Trump tapped him to be his interior secretary.)</p><p>But the most important task, Schale said, is grooming candidates in strategic districts and organizing grassroots energy and fundraising to support them in the 2018 midterm elections.</p><p>In the meantime, some Democrats are not ready to give up on Montana.</p><p>Shulman said there will be pressure on House Speaker Paul Ryan to decline to seat Gianforte.</p><p>"What Ryan chooses to do in this case could have serious ramifications for [the] Party's future, and is a real test of whether Republicans believe that this criminal behavior is acceptable," she said.</p><p>Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault after he slammed Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs to the ground the day before the election as Jacobs was asking him questions about the American Health Care Act. The incident led to outrage and a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/democrat-ads-greg-gianforte-body-slam-reporter-ben-jacobs-2017-5">last-minute ad buy</a> from progressive groups hoping to drive voters to the polls to elect Quist.</p><p>Those efforts fell short, but David Nir, political director of the liberal website Daily Kos, noted that history is on the Democrats' side on the whole.</p><p>"The last sitting member of Congress to be convicted of a violent crime was Republican Rep. Bill Janklow of South Dakota, who resigned shortly after a jury found him guilty," Nir said in an email to Business Insider. Democrats are reckoning with losing to a candidate who 'body-slammed' a reporter the day before the election

<div class="section-content"><div class="section-inner layoutSingleColumn"><p id="a73e" class="graf--p">I spent the last week gliding around San Francisco in the&#xa0;<a href="http://www.theguardian.com/fashion/shortcuts/2014/sep/19/suitsy-go-to-work-in-onesie-jesse-herzog" class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" data-href="http://www.theguardian.com/fashion/shortcuts/2014/sep/19/suitsy-go-to-work-in-onesie-jesse-herzog">now infamous</a>&#xa0;"Suitsy", an adult-sized pajama onesie disguised as a full business suit. At bars and in meetings, no one seemed to notice anything amiss. But, perhaps, I thought, this was because San Francisco is the home of weird attire and my colleagues were just unfazed.</p><p id="c221" class="graf--p">So, I found the only place in the Bay Area were most people were guaranteed to be wearing suits: a Republican convention.</p><p class="graf--p"></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p id="61f2" class="graf--p">Last weekend, the liberty-loving tech organization, Lincoln Labs, held a rally for presidential hopeful Senator Rand Paul. There were suits oozing out the front door waiting to get a selfie with the libertarian icon. I blended right in.</p><p id="c6c2" class="graf--p">Indeed, one dressed-down hip conservative asked me why I chose to join the other square stiffs wearing formal attire, "This is Silicon Valley, what are you doing?", he chuckled to himself.</p><p id="af9d" class="graf--p">It was at this point that I unzipped my onesie suit and revealed the comfy glory of what I was actually wearing. Gasps of disbelief echoed around me as if Chris Angel had just made a statue of Ronald Reagan appear out of thin air. "Whaaa?! No way!"</p><p class="graf--p">The consensus was clear: everyone thought I was wearing a traditional suit.</p><p class="embed-spacer"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Last Fall, a crowdfunding campaign to create the Suitsy became an instant meme; the Suitsy was a totem for everything that people loved and loathed about Silicon Valley. Good Morning America&#xa0;</span><a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/onesie-suit-men-tailored-lazy-professionals/story?id=25621013" class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" data-href="http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/onesie-suit-men-tailored-lazy-professionals/story?id=25621013">praised</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">&#xa0;it's quirky bohemian ingenuity while GQ&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.gq.com/style/blogs/the-gq-eye/2014/09/gq-addresses-the-one-piece-suit.html" class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" data-href="http://www.gq.com/style/blogs/the-gq-eye/2014/09/gq-addresses-the-one-piece-suit.html">hailed</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">&#xa0;it as an omen for the end times.</span></p><p id="15b9" class="graf--p">For 6 months after the press went nuts, its creator, Jesse Herzog and Silicon Valley-based retailer, Betabrand, have been heads down turning the concept piece into a reality. I managed to get my hands on the first production run and tested it out in the real world.</p><p id="174d" class="graf--p">Below is the first hands-on review of the Suitsy and, below that, is a data-driven analysis of how our economy got to a point where it's acceptable for grown men to wear pajama's at work.</p><p class="graf--p"></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div><p id="fd6f" class="graf--p">To be sure, without the twin Silicon Valley powers of Internet crowdfunding and casual tech office attire, Herzog never would have never been more than faint blip on the fashion radar.</p><p id="729d" class="graf--p">The question I had in reviewing the Suitsy was whether it's just a gimmick or a legit substitute for men's office attire. As with all things at The Ferenstein Wire, we tested this quantitatively.</p><h2 id="c977" class="graf--h2" data-align="center">A Suit Comfortable Enough To Sleep In</h2><div class="aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked"><div class="KonaFilter image-container graf-image"><div class="image"></div><p></p></div><div></div></br></div></div><div class="section-content"><div class="section-inner layoutSingleColumn"><p class="graf--p graf--first"><em>Betabrand's dress sweatpants.</em></p><p id="54df" class="graf--p graf--first">Indeed, Lindland's early vision for Betabrand was "fashion for the&#xa0;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_class" class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" data-href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_class">Creative Class</a>", referring to the growing legion of geeks-turned-highly-skilled professionals first identified by University of Toronto Professor Richard Florida. The Creative Class are "educated, early adopters who're professionally-connected to the Web and tend to have larger-than-average social reach," explains Lindland.</p><p id="b1e4" class="graf--p">So, while Facebook's engineers can lallygag into work in a pizza-stained hoodie, most creative class workers aren't lucky enough to have a billionaire CEO that wears t-shirts to press events; many are the lone data scientist or designer sandwiched in between Burberry-clad sales reps.</p><p id="f4c9" class="graf--p">Crowdfunding is the collective action glue that helps creative class workers around the country band together and fund clothing that feels like pajamas, but are indistinguishable from regular work attire.&#xa0;<span style="color: #000000;"><br /></span></p><p id="50a8" class="graf--p">For now, Betabrand is a relatively small tech startup that gets substantial media play through stunts that get its overly-connected audience excited. The Suitsy officially debuted at the company's self-titled "Silicon Valley Fashion Week," which&#xa0;<a href="http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/13/8595873/inaugural-silicon-valley-fashion-show-drones-photos" class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" data-href="http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/13/8595873/inaugural-silicon-valley-fashion-show-drones-photos">made headlines this week for drones that flew shiny pants down the catwalk</a>.</p><p id="2a6f" class="graf--p">It's no surprise then that Betabrand's penchant for silly, trolling stunts needling the traditional fashion establishment&#xa0;<a href="http://sfist.com/2014/09/22/would_you_wear_the_suitsie_the_wors.php" class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" data-href="http://sfist.com/2014/09/22/would_you_wear_the_suitsie_the_wors.php">make it an easy target for critics</a>. But, behind the silliness, Herzog says that the fashion industry itself won't recognize the next generation of fashion, especially from folks who don't share their values.</p><p id="c5ac" class="graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote">"I love a good fashion magazine on a flight. But they're kind of like the Bible. If you read it literally, you're not doing it right. They are a great way to learn about what is generally acceptable, and traditions in attire, but something like a Suitsy from a nobody in fashion, that is counterculture to everything they've espoused," he argues.</p><p id="4ad6" class="graf--p graf--last">Herzog is aware of his critics, but eyes a sea change in the culture that will propel the idea of pajama-like clothes into the mainstream of work attire. "When J.
