Reliance Jio and Airtel price hike – new plans and how you can save money

After Reliance Jio announced that it will start charging for off-net calls, Vodafone Idea announced that it will hike its tariffs starting from December 1. This was followed by Airtel and Reliance Jio making similar announcements, paving the way for the first industry-wide price hike since Reliance Jio’s disruptive entry in the telecom sector. While there’s not much information about how much the tariffs will be increased, Reliance Jio’s decision to introduce recharge plans with off-net minutes has already increased its tariffs by around 15%. With this, we expect the other telcos to increase their tariffs by around 20%-30% as Jio has also announced that it will further increase its tariffs.  Airtel has hiked its tariffs from anywhere between ₹0.50 to ₹2.22 per day. This translates to an increase in prices from ₹14 to ₹699. However, for most of the users, the effective increase in prices will end up between ₹140 and ₹190 for 84 days. Essentially, while the price hike might seem a bit too much on a per recharge basis, it doesn’t seem a lot when you consider the per day increase. It is worth noting that like Reliance Jio, even Airtel has imposed a fair usage policy (FUP) on outgoing calls to non-Airtel numbers. After crossing the FUP, Airtel users will have to pay ₹0.6 per minute, just like Jio. However, Airtel has not announced the FUP minutes as of now. Vodafone Idea

 Vodafone Idea is amongst the worst-hit post the recent Supreme Court judgment which ordered telecom operators to clear their dues. Vodafone Idea has posted a loss of ₹50,000 crore in the previous quarter – <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/markets/news/vodafone-idea-share-price-falls-sharply-after-record-loss-in-second-quarter/articleshow/72065283.cms">the highest-ever quarterly loss</a> posted by an Indian company so far. The most popular plans these days offer 1-1.5GB of 4G data per day. Like Airtel, Vodafone Idea has increased the prices of these plans to ₹599 for 84 days. The annual plans now start at ₹1,499, but if you want a 1.5GB/day annual plan, you will have to shell out ₹2,399, which works out to ₹200 per month. Unlike Airtel, Vodafone Idea has announced a FUP for off-net voice calls. Essentially, you get 1000 minutes of free off-net voice calls after which you will be charged at ₹0.6 per minute. Reliance Jio While Reliance Jio has not revealed its plan details at the moment, it has revealed that it will offer up to 300% more benefits with a price hike of up to 40%. Given that Airtel and Vodafone’s prices hikes go up to 50%, and the fact that their old plans were costlier than Jio’s, the new plans from Jio should still be the most affordable.

 How are traditional data plans different? Traditional daily data plans that sell for ₹449 for 91 days, ₹399 for 84 days and ₹349 for 70 days don’t come bundled with any minutes whatsoever.  How can I get free calling to other networks with data? In case, you don’t want to recharge with balance, Jio does give users to option to top-up their plans with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/interconnect-usage-charge-iuc-top-up-voucher-detail-for-reliance-jio-customer/articleshow/71516405.cms">IUC vouchers</a> — ₹10 gets you 124 IUC minutes, while ₹100 can provide 1362 IUC minutes. The IUC voucher, however, has to be applied alongside the data recharge. It is not a standalone option that can be added later. Even the long-term plans for ₹999, ₹1999, ₹4999 and ₹9999 don’t have free calling to other networks and need to be supplemented with IUC vouchers. What do Jio’s new ‘all-in-one’ plans include? Jio’s ‘all-in-one’ plans don’t actually include everything but are more budget-friendly for people who need to make calls to outside networks. The cheapest plan at ₹149 includes 300 minutes of IUC calls and 1.5GB of daily data for 24 days. Once the IUC minutes run out, you will be charged for calls at 6 paise/minute. Subsequent plans of ₹222, ₹333, and ₹444 — lasting 28, 56, and 84 days respectively — all come with 2GB daily data and 1000 IUC minutes. How can I protect myself against future price hikes? Jio and other telecom companies in the market are expected to increase tariffs again after December 1. But Jio — and Airtel — are now allowing users to queue up their data recharges at the current price to activate in the future. If you’re a Jio subscriber, all you have to do is go into the MyJio app and recharge with any of the plans that you wish to activate at a later date. Jio’s new recharge plans can be confusing — here’s how to figure them out

Reliance Jio and BSNL are the only telecom giants to add wireless subscribers in October, 2018 according to the subscribers’ report <a href="https://www.trai.gov.in/sites/default/files/PRNo01Eng02012019_0.pdf">published</a> by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (<keyword id="6356988" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="trai">TRAI</keyword>). The Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio went from 252.2 million subscribers in September to 262.7 million in October, while BSNL saw a hike from its 113 million subscribers to 113.4 million in October. The total telephone subscribers in India stands at a grand total of 1170.02 million as of October, 2018. Trailing off in the race are bigwigs like Vodafone-Idea, Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> and Reliance Infocomm. The Jio Impact With its discounted offers and plans, Jio continues to excite its consumer base, adding more and more numbers to its list. For example, Jio’s recent ‘Happy New Year’ offer announcing a 100 percent cashback for consumers opting for its ₹399 plan. With such plans, the telecom company aims to continue to make its mark in the country. Jio, when it had launched in September 2016, had caused a huge uproar in the <keyword id="10642" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Telecom">Indian telecom</keyword> market promising to overtake its competitors which was also seen in the neverending queues of people looking to take on a Jio number. With free voice calls and data (only charging for data very recently), the company had managed to amass large number of subscribers. With <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>’s massive growth plans for the company (Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has invested a staggering <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/ZXkH1gEUb15hQDUzgm9F3I/RIL-AGM-Mukesh-Ambani-wants-to-double-Reliance-Industries.html">$2.5 trillion</a> into Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd.), the company is headed to overtake its rivals soon. Vodafone-Idea still no breakthrough? The TRAI report states that the combined entity lost 6.5 million subscribers between September and October. Two years on, Reliance Jio continues to dominate Indian telecom market, beating global giants

At the vast open-plan headquarters of Indian telecoms start-up <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>, billionaire oil tycoon <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> stands in short sleeves beneath a digital tracker that logs every new subscriber to his service. 
 The 59-year-old is India's richest man, and his <keyword id="10926" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance">Reliance</keyword> Industries oil &amp; gas group is the country's most profitable. 
 
Now, though, he's betting at least $20 billion on building, from scratch, a national digital empire stretching from phones and hardware to home entertainment and custom-made apps. 
 
The ambitious Jio project could make Reliance the most comprehensive provider of telecom and internet services across India - and give it unprecedented access to the country's untapped 'big data': how millions eat, shop and have fun. 
 
"For Reliance... data is the new oil, and intelligent data is the new petrol," Ambani said in March, explaining his drive to move closer to India's consumers. 
 
Reliance has said little publicly about Jio, and even less about the potential for wide-scale data mining in a country where consumers have not, to date, made a big deal about online privacy. But top executives are clear on the opportunity. 
 
"It's called Deep Packet Inspection, and what you can do with the analytics of that is mind-boggling," said a senior Reliance executive, referring to a practice that digs into 'packets' of data created by computers for efficiency, mining them for information. 
 
Jio is unlikely to contribute significantly to Reliance profits anytime soon, but is hugely significant for its future. Reliance has dabbled previously in consumer sectors, yet Jio is seen as an opportunity for Ambani to set a new course for a company still dominated by his late father, its founder. 
 
Jio is also a potentially landmark opportunity for India, where smartphone usage has ballooned and services like mobile payments and online entertainment have become commonplace. 
 
The prospect of Jio, which has not yet been commercially launched, has raised hopes of cheaper, more reliable data for Indian users. It has already drawn queues at some stores by offering free connections with unlimited data for a three-month period, allowing it to test its network. 
 
That has stirred rivals. India's largest wireless provider Bharti Airtel this week cut its 3G/4G data tariffs on prepaid connections by more than 40 percent, after halving them a month ago. 
 
ALL ABOUT AMBITION 
 
But Jio - named from a Hindi exhortation to 'live on' - is behind schedule and over budget, say several former employees, who, like current staff interviewed by Reuters, did not want to be named. It was initially expected to launch by end-2014, with total capital expenditure within $15 billion, they said. 
 
Reliance has never provided a specific date or figure, and declined to respond to specific queries for this article. 
 
According to filings at the Commerce Ministry, Jio has more than 325 billion rupees ($4.9 billion) of long-term debt, and other liabilities topping 580 billion rupees, as of March. In addition, Reliance has spent over 290 billion rupees on Jio and is expected to invest more - all adding up to more than what it has been spending on its core refining and petrochemicals business. 
 
Reliance says its oil business is pumping out cash, and any investment in Jio has to be ambitious. 
 
Two-thirds of India's 1.3 billion population are not online, and Jio hopes to capture 100 million users - nearly half of India's current smartphone users - within a year of launch. 
 
Ambani, who employees say taught himself to code, ran Reliance's nascent telecoms operations in the early 2000s, before a feud with his younger brother Anil triggered a split and a bitter non-compete deal. Mukesh took the family's energy business and Anil the communications assets, setting up Reliance Communications (RCom). 
 
Before long though, Mukesh was laying fibre cables again and set up a subsidiary, Rancore, to build its own mobile telephony technology. 
 
In 2010, Mukesh's Reliance Industries bought Infotel Broadband - on the day Infotel won nationwide spectrum - and decided it needed to offer more than a high-speed 4G network service. Instead, it would pitch an all-internet service, where even voice calls would be carried as data, cheaply, beating its rivals Airtel, Vodafone and Idea on quality and speed, according to Jio officials. 
 
Airtel, Vodafone and Idea declined to comment on Jio. 
 
Naveen Kulkarni, co-head of research at Phillip Capital, said the Jio technology was "very efficient from a cost point of view," but needs India's smartphone ecosystem to evolve, making it unlikely Reliance will make money from Jio for at least five years. 
 
RELIANCE CITY 
 
At Jio's biggest campus, a sprawling cluster of glass buildings, manicured lawns and giant Jio logos outside Mumbai, the scale of Ambani's vision is evident. Reuters was offered a rare opportunity to visit the site earlier this year. 
 
The campus has 15,000 employees working for Jio alone, plus hundreds of consultants and service providers working alongside the group. There are large guest houses and hotels. 
 
In a single hall, Reliance has put on show everything from its e-payment mechanism and music-streaming app to its messaging app, sleek Jio smartphones - sold at a fraction of the cost of an iPhone - connected cars, and even a replica home. 
 
"As they go out, they will have a very aggressive posture," said Rajan Mathews, director general of the Cellular Operators Association of India. 
 
On campus, Ambani, who flies in by helicopter once a week, was flanked at his desk by his eldest son, Akash, who is Jio's head of strategy, and by Manoj Modi, a long-serving adviser, and a reminder of the influence of trusted employees, most from the oil business. 
 
One company insider said the Jio logo is actually a mirror image of the word 'oil,' reflecting in a way Reliance's journey from oil drilling to data mining.
