The Quadrilateral Alliance (QUAD) is not a formal partnership. It has also never officially claimed to be anti-China, even though many of its moves have managed to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/foreign-policy/news/three-reasons-why-china-showed-aggression-against-india-on-border-according-to-a-former-diplomat/articleshow/76462632.cms">rattle</a> the Asian giant. Experts believe that the QUAD may be on the cusp of turning into something <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/foreign-policy/news/the-fear-of-china-has-put-the-global-spotlight-on-india-its-raked-up-three-comprehensive-strategic-partnerships-in-the-last-24-months/slidelist/76258833.cms">more official</a>. During the coronavirus pandemic, members of the alliance met nearly every week. And, pushing their relationships further was China’s growing aggression, both politically and economically. On the one side, it was taking on the US with the trade deal. And, on the other, it was involved in a border dispute with India along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Both of these issues are now on the mend, but the first-ever meeting of the highest officials across the four countries may be another signal that the QUAD is testing the waters for a more formal arrangement. The first-ever leaders summit of the QUAD may be another signal that it's ready for something more formal

New York, <keyword id="10234427" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-vice-president-kamala-harris">US Vice President Kamala Harris</keyword> will also participate in the first Quad summit with President Joe Biden and Prime Ministers Narendra Modi of India, Scott Morrison of Australia and Yoshihide Suga of Japan on Friday, according to the <keyword id="6356037" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="white-house">White House</keyword>. The virtual summit is scheduled for 8.30 a.m. in Washington and 7 p.m. in Delhi (10.30 p.m. in Canberra and 12.30 a.m. Saturday in Tokyo). Reporters will be allowed to see the opening of the meeting, according to the White House schedules for Biden and Harris. Biden's spokesperson Jen Psaki said that National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan will give a readout of the meeting at noon (10.30 p.m. India time). Harris has had limited personal exposure to international leaders and has started a round of talks with some of them, starting with President Emmanuel Macaron of France and Prime Ministers Justin Trudeau of Canada and Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel. According to readouts, they discussed a wide range of regional and global issues during the one-on-one calls. Introducing her during their visit to the State Department, Biden said that Harris was committed to "crafting a foreign policy that puts diplomacy first and that keeps our nation safe and delivers real results to the American people". Most of Harris's political career has been in California and during her four years in the Senate, she gained direct exposure to international affairs as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. She is reported to be planning regular lunches with Secretary of State Antony Blinken to deepen her familiarity with the nitty-gritty of foreign policy. Modi and Harris will probably be face-to-face, though virtually, for the first time on Friday as there does not appear to be a record of any meetings between them. After her election, Modi tweeted: "Your success is pathbreaking, and a matter of immense pride not just for your chithis, but also for all Indian-Americans." "Chithis" as it is pronounced, is the Tamil term for aunts who are mother's younger sisters and Harris used the word to include them while acknowledging her extended family in her speech accepting the Democratic Party nomination for vice president. Harris has been frosty towards the current Indian government. While a Senator she criticised External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for refusing to meet with the House Foreign Affairs Committee because it wanted to include Indian-American Pramila Jayapal, a critic of Modi's government, in the meeting although she is not a member of the committee. Harris's niece <keyword id="6354744" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="meena">Meena</keyword> recently got involved in the farmer's agitation in India tweeting support for it even though she has not opposed conditions in the US similar to what the Indian farmers are against.

Union Commerce Minister <keyword id="6355222" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="piyush-goyal" source="Orion">Piyush Goyal</keyword> has urged governments of G7 nations to collaborate on a regulatory framework to ease the movement of supply chains and facilitate cross-border trade. The Union Commerce Minister on Friday participated in the G7 Trade Ministers' Meeting in Osaka, Japan. The Group of Seven is an intergovernmental political forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK and the US. The European Union is included as a "non-enumerated member". During the meeting, <keyword id="6361408" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="goyal" source="Orion">Goyal</keyword> made an important intervention on the topic of enhancing supply chain resilience and gave several suggestions on the issue, as per a release issued by the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. He mentioned that the COVID pandemic and the geo-political events highlighted the vulnerabilities of the existing supply chains leading to an increase in commodity prices and global inflation. The minister encouraged public-private partnership, investment in critical infrastructure and the need for innovation and digitalization of supply chains. Goyal highlighted the need for supply chain diversification and skilling and re-skilling of personnel. He also recalled the Generic Framework for Mapping of Global Value Chains (GVCs) mentioned in the New Delhi Declaration of the G20. The session also saw participation from representatives from the governments, private sector and international organisations like OECD, <keyword id="6357761" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wto" source="Orion">WTO</keyword>, etc. Most of the private sectors shared their positive experiences in developing resilient supply chains, as per the official release. <keyword id="6911" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="suzuki" source="Orion">Suzuki</keyword> made a presentation on their experience in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. Suzuki mentioned how they developed a reliable and trusted vendor base in India and achieved over 95 per cent indigenisation in their supply chains in India. ERIA also mentioned a study conducted by them that showed the growing share of India in global value chains. Ministers from Australia, Chile, Indonesia and Kenya also made their interventions and shared suggestions on this topic. The Union Commerce Minister had bilateral engagements with several ministers. He met Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Nishimura Yasutoshi, UK's Secretary of State for Business and Trade Kemi Badenoch, Australia's Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell and Ambassador, United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Germany's Secretary of State, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Udo Phillip, according to the release issued by the commerce ministry. The Japanese Economy Minister Nishimura wrote on X: "My table at the G7 reception is a "quad" table. It is a four-country collaboration between Japan, the United States, Australia and India. Minister Goyal, an ally of India, was excited about the video introducing the traditional culture of Japan and Kansai, saying, 'India and Japan have a lot in common culturally'." Goyal in response wrote: "Thank you Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi for your warm hospitality and productive meetings." During his bilateral engagements, Goyal discussed important issues including enhancing bilateral trade, removal of non-tariff barriers, an update on the status of the ongoing FTA negotiations and the upcoming ministerial conference on WTO. Goyal also met Director General of WTO Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Chairman, Mitsui, Japan and Japan-India Business Cooperation Committee Tatsuo Yasunagawa (JIBCC). G7 accounts for over half of global network wealth, 30-43 per cent of global GDP and 10 per cent of the world's population. India is among the select countries that have been invited by the G7 in the meeting of trade ministers in Osaka.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Michal Burton, 28, thought moving from Ireland to London was a good chance to make more money.</li><li>While he is earning more, Burton feels that life in London can be stressful and lonely. </li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Michael Burton, a 28-year-old quantity surveyor from Ireland who moved to London in 2023. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I'm from Enniskerry, a town in the countryside, up in the Wicklow Mountains. It's probably the most rural place you can live that's somewhat close to Dublin.Until I was eight, I grew up on a farm with my mom and my grandparents. It was a pretty good life; we had a lot of animals, and I had quads and motorbikes. When I was nine, my mom, stepfather, little sister, and I moved into a house up the road from my grandparents' place.<div type="image" title="Michael Burton" height="1152" width="1536" msid="108766486" hostid="261" sizebytes="111868"></div>In 2018, I left Ireland after graduating from university and moved to London. I wanted something completely different, and there were better job opportunities there. My friends had also completed university, so four of us moved together.I lived in London until COVID hit in 2020 and then moved back to Ireland. It's such a small place that you eventually run out of things to do and places to go — and run into too many people you know.In 2023, I decided to move back to London.<h2>I wanted to see London through fresh eyes</h2>The first time I moved to the UK, I was about 23. My lifestyle back then was a lot different than it is now. I was overweight, drank most days, and did drugs. Even though I was very unhappy, the London party lifestyle was what I enjoyed.<div type="image" title="Michael Burton and his girlfriend." height="1440" width="1440" msid="108766489" hostid="261" sizebytes="163192"></div>When I moved back to Ireland during COVID, I got really into fitness, and did triathlons, Ironman races, and other challenges.When my partner and I decided to try London again, I wanted to see what it would be like living there as a completely different person under new circumstances.So far, my second run in the UK has taught me that sometimes it's worthwhile knowing what you don't want.<h2>Life in London can be lonely</h2>I live in Tooting, just beside Balham in the Wandsworth area.It's a pretty vibrant suburb and very multicultural. I would say it's an affordable part of the city. However, there's a lot of gentrification. There are more young professionals living here now than there are working-class families.There's also very little community spirit. To be honest, it can be pretty lonely living here. Not many people talk to each other and everyone kind of sticks to themselves.There are green spaces, but they're quite small. At least, if I were living back home in Ireland, I would be in nature and I'd have my dog.Regardless of where you live in London, it's a super stressful place. You can always hear either sirens, cars, horns, or people rushing.I feel that as humans, we all have a certain amount of stress that we can handle. In the city, there are so many micro-stressors throughout the course of your day that eventually, it starts to spill over.<h2>The hustle and bustle of city life is stressful</h2>If you are looking to advance your career, regardless of your profession — whether you are an artist, actor, quantity surveyor, or work in finance or consulting — the opportunities available in London far surpass those in Ireland.As a quantity surveyor, I wouldn't get paid half as much in Ireland as in the UK.I'd probably be paid about 40,000 euros ($43,592) in Ireland. However, if you convert my salary into pounds, I'm earning about £5,000 ($6,325) or £6,000 ($7,590) more.The caveat to this is I have no interest in my job, therefore London doesn't fill my cup anymore. While it can be a fabulous place to meet like-minded people and earn more money, I just don't think London serves me or gives me what I'm looking for in life.<div type="image" title="Michael Burton and girlfriend running." height="900" width="1200" msid="108766492" hostid="261" sizebytes="125414"></div>London is a bit of a vortex in the sense that between 8 a.m. on a Monday and 4 p.m. on a Friday, you have this super stressful, nearly unsociable, lonely experience.For me, a typical day is to wake up at 5 a.m., do an ice bath, go to the gym, then head to work at 8 a.m. Work until 1 o'clock, go to the gym again at lunchtime, work until 5 p.m., come home, work on starting my own fitness and wellness business, and then go to sleep, and wake up at five again.Some people like a nine-to-five, and that's great — there's nothing wrong with that. But certain circumstances in my life have fostered the mindset that time is way more important than anything else. Personally, I don't want to give my time to something I'm not passionate about or benefit from apart from a paycheck.I try to fill my weekends with fitness — seeing friends and making connections — because, for me, that's what makes London palatable and enjoyable.<h2>I love the fitness community, but the city just isn't for me</h2>I wouldn't have as many opportunities to join fitness and running clubs or gym classes in Ireland as I do in the UK.I believe the people I've met through the run clubs and fitness activities are going to be with me for the rest of my life. I find that aspect of living in London incredibly valuable, and I wouldn't change it.However, those connections shouldn't necessarily keep me there. If they are as strong as I believe, then moving to a different place shouldn't really affect them.<div type="image" title="Michael Burton and friends." height="1536" width="2048" msid="108766493" hostid="261" sizebytes="468070"></div>In June, I am moving to Lisbon. I'm looking forward to Portugal's slower pace of life, better weather conditions, cheaper cost of living, and friendlier people.I'm also hoping to train for my next running challenge, and set up my business by the sea. The initial rollout will be coaching for running, triathlons, and strength training, with the end goal of turning my farm back in Ireland into a wellness retreat.I don't regret trying out London a second time because I believe it was worthwhile trying under different circumstances. Just because it hasn't worked out the way I imagined doesn't mean it's a failure.

I moved to London and found it too stressful. Now I'm leaving for Portugal.

US President <keyword id="99719" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Joe-Biden">Joe Biden</keyword> has invited 40 heads of state, including Indian Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>, to join him for the <keyword id="11002600" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-leaders-summit">World Leaders Summit</keyword> on <keyword id="6375923" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate">Climate</keyword> to be hosted by his administration on April 22-23. The other leaders including Presidents Xi Jinping of China and Vladimir Putin of Russia, and Prime Ministers Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh and Lotay Tshering of Bhutan have also been invited to the virtual meeting to highlight the urgency of action to combat climate change, the White House said on Friday. European leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister <keyword id="6380867" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="boris-johnson">Boris Johnson</keyword> were invited. So were Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. "The Leaders Summit on Climate will underscore the urgency, and the economic benefits, of stronger climate action. It will be a key milestone on the road to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) this November in Glasgow," the White House said. The virtual summit will be live-streamed for people everywhere to watch the proceedings. Biden has made fighting climate change a pillar of both his foreign and domestic policies and one of his first actions on taking office in January was to have the US rejoin the <keyword id="3090201" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-climate-change-agreement">Paris Climate Change Agreement</keyword>. The summit is meant to position Biden, and the US, as the global leader in meeting the climate change challenge and boost his stature. "By the time of the summit, the US will announce an ambitious 2030 emissions target as its new Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement for limiting the damage from climate change, the White House said. Biden has asked all US government agencies to come up with ways to cut greenhouse emissions and harness green energy. He appointed former Secretary of State John Kerry to be his international emissary for climate change reflecting the high priority it has on his agenda. He is reaching out to the leaders of China and Russia, who he has harshly criticised over their human rights record and their international rivalry with the US to work together on the climate agenda despite their differences. Biden wants countries around the world to take steps to limit emissions to a level that would limit planetary warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius "in order to stave off the worst impacts of climate change", the White House said. "The President urged leaders to use the Summit as an opportunity to outline how their countries also will contribute to stronger climate ambition." India will be under US pressure to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by being shown as the world's third-highest emitter of greenhouse gases after Beijing and Washington. However, that picture is misleading as on a per capita basis the US emissions were nearly nine times that of India. An Indian emitted only 1.96 tonnes of greenhouse gases in a year, while an American was responsible for 16.56 tonnes. For all the posturing and preaching, Biden or the climate change activists in the US are not going to bring down the US per capita emissions anywhere near the Indian level while demanding that India cut down its emissions overall. India is already promoting green energy to eventually eliminate fossil fuel-generated electricity. It is reportedly working on a goal of achieving a net-zero emissions by 2050. Net-zero emission is achieved by removing all greenhouse gases that are put out by various means ranging from aforestation to technologies to capture the emissions. The Climate Summit will be Modi's second multilateral virtual meeting with Biden. Earlier this month, Biden and Modi were joined by Prime Minister Yoshihide Sugo of Japan and Scott Morrison of Australia at a summit of the Quad. Long are the days of Tonya Harding, Michelle Kwan, and Sasha Cohen.But that looks set to change by the time the next winter Olympics rolls around in 2022, thanks to a 4-foot-10, 14-year-old girl from the Bay Area.Last year, Alysa Liu became the youngest woman ever to win the US Figure Skating Championships at the age of 13. She defended her title last week, making history again as she became the first woman to land a quadruple jump at nationals.She also pulled off two triple axels, a jump so hard that only two American women have been able to land it in international competition, Harding and 2018 Olympian Mirai Nagasu.Business Insider spoke to American skating greats Adam Rippon and Tara Lipinski to explain just how difficult Liu's performance was, and what the future has in store for the phenom.<h2>The 'Simone Biles of figure skating'</h2>Rippon, who helped the US win bronze in the team event at the 2018 Pyeongchang games, said Liu has the potential to be become the "Simone Biles of figure skating.""Alysa does things so easily, but if you're an average viewer, you almost don't appreciate how difficult and revolutionary the program that she's putting out is," he said.Olympic gold medalist Lipinski, who was commentating on NBC Sports during last Friday's finals, called Liu's performance "mind blowing.""We haven't seen a US skater with this much potential. We're watching a world champion or an Olympic champion in the making," Lipinski said.Lipionski added that not only is Liu landing quad jumps, but she's doing the one that's considered the hardest: the quad lutz.<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e34ac3a5bc79c1f24530cb7-2000/alysa%20liu%202.jpg" alt="alysa liu 2" /><h2>America's 'answer to Russia'</h2>Both described Liu as America's "answer to Russia," which has dominated the sport in the last two Olympics.Lipinski traced Russia's rise back to one of the biggest skating scandals, the fixing of the pairs' figure skating competition at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. A French judge said she had been pressured to vote for Russian pair skaters Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2002/aug/01/russia.sport">but later withdrew her claim.</a> The international skating union banned that judge and the head of French skating for three years as punishment.After the scandal, the rules concerning scoring were changed in Russia, and the new rules incentivized skaters to take more risks and attempt more difficult jumps.Where once women never even attempted to do quadruple jumps, and triple axels were exceedingly rare, they are now becoming almost necessary to compete at the elite level.Lipinski pointed to three Russian women in particular - Alena Kostornaia, Alexandra Trusova, and Ana Shcherbakova- who are regularly pulling off quadruple jumps or triple axels in competition.<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e34ade624306a15543e8a68-2000/ripopn%20lipinski.jpg" alt="ripopn lipinski" />Rippon said Liu isn't just on the same level as these Russian athletes, she has them one-upped because the two girls landing quads (Trusova and Shcherbakova) aren't attempting triple axels, too."So that kind of puts Alysa at an advantage," he said."There's no other US lady out there right now who can compete with them on that level," Lipinski said.<h2>How she could be a gold medal threat at the Olympics </h2>But difficult jumps aren't the only part of the scoring in figure skating. There's also the component score, which judges a skater's "artistry." Both Rippon and Lipinski said that Liu has some work to do on this.Lipinski pointed out how the best Russian skater of the moment, Kostornaia, has been beating her two teammates who have quad jumps thanks to her higher artistic score (the hardest jump she does is the triple axel)."It's finding this balance and it does take time to sort of learn how to be the complete package," Lipinski said. "I think for Alysa, she needs not only to add more quadruple jumps but to make those jumps very clean.""I think Alya is still building that momentum to create moments where you feel things, sort of in the vein of Michelle Kwan. A 2019<a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamacardiology/article-abstract/2737412" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> study</a> in JAMA Cardiology found that resistance training, but not aerobic exercise, reduced pericardial adipose tissue, a type of fat on the heart that is a<a href="https://academic.oup.com/ejcts/article/46/6/1014/385083" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> risk factor</a> for cardiovascular disease. </li></ul><h2>Stretching for heart health </h2>Although it might be easy to overlook, stretching and increasing flexibility is another important type of exercise<a href="https://www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/fitness/fitness-basics/flexibility-exercise-stretching" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> recommended</a> by the American Heart Association.Some types of stretching exercises — particularly yoga — can have a direct impact on heart health by reducing<a href="https://clinicalhypertension.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s40885-018-0102-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> arterial stiffness</a>, or the thickening of the arteries that is linked with high blood pressure and <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-a-stroke" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stroke</a>. It tilts and has an attractive curve, but it was a bit much to take in. Once I realized that I didn't need to sit so close to it, the display became a bit more manageable. Essentially, it is like having two monitors. As a writer, I like to be able to see what I am working on while also viewing a few windows of research materials. The 34" screen helped immensely with this and saved me from jumping from one tab to another, which could potentially lure me into a social media wormhole.The camera can be pushed down into the monitor if you are concerned about hackers gaining access and seeing what you are up to. However, you still need to pop the camera back up if you want to log in using face recognition. Speaking of the face recognition, initially, I had it analyze my face when I had a substantial beard. After I shaved, it no longer recognized me. To be fair, my friends have the same problem. If the PC doesn't recognize your face, you can still log in with a PIN.The sound is delivered from front-firing quad speakers in the soundbar at the front of the computer's base. The Danish high-end electronics firm Bang &amp; Olufsen is the brains behind the audio. The base is outfitted with touch controls that allow you to play, pause, and adjust the volume of your media without touching the keyboard or mouse. As a sloppy person with a cluttered desk, I accidentally hit the controls on several occasions so I disabled it. However, it did function flawlessly up until I gave it the ax.Overall, the audio quality is impressive. The bass isn't earth-shattering due to the size of the speakers, but the sound on all levels is incredibly clear. I got a reading of 99 decibels approximately 12" from the speakers when blasting some tunes. So, it should be sufficient for rocking out or getting wrapped up in action movies.One morning, I tried to play some background music while working, but the HP Envy told me that I didn't have speakers. It didn't recognize their existence. So, I clicked on the little blue and white question mark icon in the lower right to launch HP Support Assistant. I was instantly messaging with Prachi, a support representative, who let me know that the root of the problem was a Windows 10 update that had some configuration and compatibility issues with the Realtek sound card. I gave him control of my computer, and after reinstalling the sound driver, I was able to play Brian Eno.This was my only experience with the HP customer support, and I was impressed that they were able to fix my problem in under 10 minutes with minimal effort on my part.Lastly, I tested the HP Envy 34 using the UL PCMark 10 test, which is considered the industry standard for PC performance for Windows 10 machines.<a href="https://benchmarks.ul.com/pcmark10" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5bf1fa1166be503637491763-1386/0.png" border="0" alt="0" data-mce-source="James Brains/Business Insider" />James Brains/Business Insider</div></div></div></a>Overall, it scored 4,631, which is better than most PCs, very good for AIOs, but not as good as the high-octane gaming consoles or graphics-editing computers. There seemed to be some disconnect between how the keyboard communicated with the computer because it would occasionally register several keystrokes when I only pressed the key once. This was endlessly frustrating so I ditched the keyboard pretty early on in the testing. I used the mouse throughout the testing, but quite often, it would register right clicks as left clicks, even when I clicked as far to the right as possible.I was annoyed by the number of emails and offers that followed the onboarding process. Also, there are a lot of unnecessary programs that come on the computer, which are easy enough to remove but annoying. If you spend $2,000 on a computer, you shouldn't have to deal with having additional sales pitches or items thrust upon you. Then again, maybe some buyers look for these "perks."All of the USB 3.0 ports are located in the back of the computer's base. This can be a pain to access at times, especially if you have your PC against a wall. My last concern is that there is no CD/DVD drive. Many of us still have these discs and would like to listen/watch them on our fancy computer. A disc drive would also have saved me a couple of minutes <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/canon-laser-printer-review-imageclass-mf426dw-2018-10">setting up my printer</a>. Since I don't have the income to spend more than $1,000 on an AIO, I probably would not. But, if I came into a little extra money, this would be at the top of my list of items to buy. I tried the HP Envy 34" Curved All-In-One for 90 days - and getting work done and streaming video has never been easier

We saw <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2016/09/10/rising-from-the-ashes-downtown-manhattan-15-years-after-911.html">the resilience of New York City businesses</a> in the weeks and months after 9/11. Now, when the whole country is in the throes of dealing with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-virus-everything-we-know-deadly-2019-ncov-wuhan-spread-2020-1">COVID-19</a>, many US companies large and small are responding with equal aplomb, rejiggering their business models to meet the new needs of the nation. Even manufacturers and suppliers, usually the hardest cog to turn within any economic engine, are making changes to support our new social-distancing, remote-work culture.<h1>Launching a product to help the new work-from-home nation</h1><a href="https://zenbooth.net/">Zenbooth</a>, the Berkeley, California-based makers of single-, double-, and quad-sized office quiet booths for phone calls and focused work, made the decision to adapt to change by doing something they've never done before - producing a desk instead of a booth. The <a href="https://zenbooth.net/products/zenstation-adjustable-desk">ZenStation</a> height-adjustable desk, which runs between $500 and $700, is the company's first product in response to the surge in home workers, and they're currently canvassing their Bay Area neighbors to see how else they can be helpful. The company forecasts sales of thousands of units of the ZenStation as soon as its supply chain stabilizes. "Zenbooth's focus has always been about making work more comfortable. In the open office, the burning problem was privacy. At home, the first burning problem is ergonomics," Zenbooth Founder and CEO Sam Johnson told Business Insider. "Most people we know were dissatisfied with their setup, and this was causing pain and will later cause injury." And so it began with the ZenStation, which Johnson also viewed as low-hanging fruit because it was within the company's skill set. "The ZenStation was also something within our capabilities - we could get it to market fast," he said. When Johnson said "fast," he wasn't kidding around. Zenbooth developed and brought the ZenStation to market in just one week once California Governor Gavin Newsom announced his <a href="https://covid19.ca.gov/stay-home-except-for-essential-needs/">shelter-in-place order</a>. "With Zenbooth, I tested a few ideas and then released the first concept within 24 hours, and sold a few within a couple of weeks, so I had the confidence we could do it again," Johnson, who funded his company entirely on the proceeds from these early sales, said. "We now have a talented team and relationships that enable us to move even faster."The one hurdle Johnson does have to cross, however, is California's aforementioned shelter-in-place restrictions, which have obviously affected his own workforce. Johnson is looking at rolling production across the country as needed to support his work-from-home customers. "This is a moving target like no other. Last Tuesday, we shut down our manufacturing operations due to Berkeley City shelter-in-place restrictions. <a href="https://www.cityofberkeley.info/uploadedFiles/Health_Human_Services/Level_3_-_Public_Health/city-of-berkeley-health-officer-order-to-shelter-in-place.pdf">Those restrictions</a> had an exception to the supply of working-from-home products and supply to other essential businesses, which we got advice we could work within," Johnson told Business Insider. Then, three hours after they put the product page up on Thursday, California released broad shelter-in-place restrictions. "We're in this for the long term, though, and we will work - safely - with our suppliers in other states to be able to produce these as restrictions are added and then lifted," he added. "We're committed to balancing health at home with following the restrictions to enable community health." Johnson takes the occasion of the pandemic to make a larger point about the importance of <a href="https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/ergonomics/">ergonomics</a> to overall well-being. "OSHA [the Occupational Safety and Health Administration] states that <a href="https://www.safeopedia.com/definition/6681/ergonomic-injury">ergonomic injuries</a> have direct costs of between $15 to $20 billion per year, with total annual costs reaching $45 to $54 billion," Johnson said. "Well, we have heard from many who have suffered after working from home for one week with issues like neck strain, and with shelter-in-place restrictions, none of those people are going to see a doctor or physiotherapist anytime soon. We expect to see a 'whiplash' of injuries and claims after the coronavirus pandemic passes."In addition to offering the ZenStation to the work-from-home audience, Zenbooth is selling their hero product to telemedicine and medical research companies that are in increased demand and need privacy to ensure confidentiality in their services. Johnson said he's examining other ways to make his company's capabilities useful in the context of this pandemic, for example, in the area of isolation rooms (often called <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/infectioncontrol/guidelines/isolation/glossary.html">airborne infection isolation rooms</a>)."If the opportunity arises to help save lives, we'll definitely jump at it. But otherwise, we'll be trying to help all those working from home," Johnson said. <h1>A tech company adapts by changing its audience</h1>Going from office furnishings to office technology, Manchester, New Hampshire-based <a href="https://www.minim.co/">Minim</a> had long been working with internet service providers to provide network security, parental controls, and WiFi management tools. Then the news of the coronavirus began to spread.<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e7cbe80671de0080d35ac47-400/nicole hayward.jpg" alt="Nicole Hayward, Minim's cofounder and CMO/CPO" />"When the news of COVID-19 broke, we realized that the same platform we provide to ISPs could be democratized for businesses and their employees to provide secure remote working environments," Nicole Hayward, Minim's cofounder and CMO/CPO, told Business Insider. "Our solution helps remote workers who are experiencing choppy video calls, slow speeds from kids' streaming at home, and worse - the rise of targeted hacking."<a href="http://www.minim.co/remote">Minim for Remote Workers</a> was rolled out in the matter of a weekend, and the company is now offering four free months of service to people globally, which includes a Minim router, a mobile app for the employee, and a web app for the employer. "On Thursday and Friday, March 12 and 13, we pulled together team leadership from all departments for a few work sessions. As marketing and product leader, I prepared a product launch template that we routinely use for new product and feature rollouts," Hayward shared. "We kept it concise and honed in on the immediate needs, such as the product workflow to enable four free months of services, and how to immediately get the message out to our partners." She added, "It helped that the team was very bought into the vision; everyone contributed to the launch plan and collaborated through the weekend into the wee hours. By the time we hit Monday the 16th at about noon, we had a totally new signup path, a new section of our website, new SKUs on our ecommerce site, an automated journey, helpful handouts, an internal FAQ to help our customers, and more." Hayward noted that getting the word out around the new offering was a critically important consideration surrounding the launch. "One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that multiple leaders read our communications before they went out - to ensure we are hitting the right message and tone during this challenging time," she said. "To that end, we published a heartfelt letter to our community from our CEO, and our first sign-ups were friends and locals in the Manchester and Boston area. We are also thankful to have great investors and advisors to help us get the word out."While it's still early in the launch journey of Minim for Remote Workers, Hayward is optimistic about its success."We're still assessing target adoption," Hayward said. "But, we're really hoping that businesses will step up and take on this responsibility to support their employees. It's such a big paradigm shift for many, and remote workers shouldn't be burdened with the added stress of not being able to get work done over their WiFi. Not to mention, there's an incredibly high risk to corporate data if a single employee's network is compromised. VPN won't even help there."<h1>Other companies scale up to meet increased demand for atypical products and services </h1>"It's doing the education piece for us," <a href="https://biopureservice.com/">BioPure Services</a> President Brandon Kinder said of the impact coronavirus has made on his business, which provides hospital-grade disinfection services to homes and businesses across the Southeast. "We've now experienced how quickly something can go from a few folks in China to right here in our backyard in a matter of weeks. Germs connect us all, and we're seeing the need to change the standard of clean."With their chlorine dioxide-based spray treatment that's on the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-expands-covid-19-disinfectant-list">EPA's approved list of effective treatments against COVID-19</a> - among a lot of other nastiness - BioPure Services found itself suddenly with overflowing demand during this time of extreme economic duress. Kinder said his business has increased 75% over one month, with inquiries for services from all over the country. "Any time you set a goal of trying to change the way something has traditionally been done education is a huge piece of that, but now I'm getting a barrage of calls, emails, and voicemails more than I can answer, and that's good," Kinder, who has increased his workforce by 50% in order to handle the influx of inquiries, told Business Insider. Kinder acknowledged that people had a bit of a hard time understanding the importance of his service prior to the onset of the pandemic. PATHWATER bottles are aluminum, which are 100% recyclable in a closed-loop system, so we hope the influx of people purchasing our sustainable alternative to bottled water will at least help keep a fraction of plastic waste out of landfills over the next few months," Company CEO Amer Orabi told Business Insider.Orabi said that his company has benefited greatly from its use of technology while under California's shelter-in-place orders and observing social distancing. "Operating during shelter in place is definitely a challenge, especially from an operations standpoint. Aside from our team, our second biggest asset is technology," Orabi said. "We utilize technology in every part of our operations/fulfillment. Virtual meetings, automated order processing, and a good communication platform are all ways to increase efficiency in a remote work environment."To meet the increasing demand for bottled water, he added, the company has ramped up its production capacity by increasing efficiency and yields. "Almost all of our PATHWATER production processes are fully automated with a limited need for human involvement. Again, technology is a big difference maker for businesses in a situation like this," he said.In fact, PATHWATER has increased production by 250% in order to meet demand, and has also made a commitment to give back and help the hard-hit San Francisco region where the company is based. Berkes, who'd previously overcome a delay in shipments from his Chinese suppliers when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-small-business-sellers-affected-by-coronavirus-inventory-shortage">factories throughout the country were shut down for weeks</a> to forestall the spread of COVID-19, said he has also been able to get clients he provides with non-medical goods to place larger orders in the interest of not running out of supplies."Honestly, the logistics in China can be a challenge even when there is not a pandemic," Berkes told Business Insider. "So I am always hedging to get my clients to order sooner or more product then what they typically want. In this case, ordering 30 to 50% more inventory has been a good decision, because we could see a lot more delays in the future."Johnson concluded, "It's sad that there has been so much political rhetoric about protecting American jobs in manufacturing over the past couple years. This will be a historical lesson that you're better off investing in the health and safety of your people rather than tariffs and walls.
