However, China led the way in 2023, with alternative payments accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total e-commerce payments value in 2023 that took place in the entire Asia Pacific region. However, India is also not far behind, with a significant surge in alternative payment methods since 2018. The e-commerce analytics by the company revealed that even traditionally cash-intensive countries in APAC such as the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, are witnessing a similar trend. "While most Asian markets are traditionally cash-dominated, the adoption of alternative payment methods for both online and in-store payments is growing across many markets in the region, even outpacing the West. This trend is driven by the rising smartphone and internet accessibility, increasing convenience of electronic payments, and the proliferation of mobile and QR code-based payment solutions" said Shiv Gupta, Senior Banking and Payments Analyst at GlobalData. The report also highlights that within the Asia-Pacific region, China and India have a higher adoption rate of alternative payment methods as compared to their peers. According to the company's 2023 Financial Services Consumer Survey, alternative payment solutions account for more than 65% of the e-commerce transaction value in China, the largest e-commerce market globally. It represents a significant increase from 53.4% in 2018. Other Asian markets like Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Philippines are also seeing higher adoption of alternative payment solutions. "Alternative payment solutions accounts for lion share in e-commerce markets across many APAC countries, supported by rising internet and smartphone penetration, and growing acceptance of digital payments by merchants. With the convenience, speed, and security they offer, coupled with high expected growth in the overall e-commerce market in the region, these payment tools are anticipated to further gain traction and disrupt the consumer payment space in the region" said Gupta.

Quishing on the rise – Be alert while scanning payment QR codes

These digital menus <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/qr-codes-return-to-restaurants-due-to-the-pandemic-2020-8">rose to prominence</a> during the pandemic for sanitary purposes, as they helped to eliminate contact between restaurant staff and customers.At first, these QR-code menus were thought to be a staple for the future of restaurants.But since then, fewer restaurants are creating QR-code menus and the codes that are active are receiving fewer scans from customers, Mark Plumlee, the senior content manager for menu management and printing platform <a href="https://www.musthavemenus.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MustHaveMenus</a>, told the Times.Customers don't want to take out their phones when dining out, because it can be perceived as rude or distracting, the Times reported. One restaurant owner told the Times that that the QR-code menu is essentially "the antithesis of romance," because it can inhibit conversation. The QR menus have also sparked privacy concerns around tracking customer data, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/online-menu-qr-code-restaurants-bars-tracking-privacy-concerns-report-2021-7">Insider reported.</a>While the QR-code menu has lost favor with customers, restaurant owners told the Times they were also leaning toward dropping the menus. Some restaurants, however, are set on keeping QR codes around — mainly for the convenience and flexibility they provide customers, telling the times that the menus enable customers to order and pay without relying on a server. Benjamin Claeys, chief executive of Menu Tiger, a global QR-menu software provider, said restaurants are still interested. He told the Times that the number of businesses signing up for the company's services grew 37.6% in the first quarter of this year, compared to the last quarter in 2022."Our own customer data says QR-code menus are here to stay," Claeys told The Times.

The strategy of capturing a customer's email, phone number, and other information is essential for a company's success and sustainability, Michael Burke, the founder of SMS-marketing startup <a href="https://curatedcommerce.co/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Curated</a>, said."The only thing that a business owns is their website, their email list, and their SMS list," he added. She created the brand as a way for customers to get their nails done when salons were closed earlier in the pandemic, so the video tutorials serve as bonus content and nail-design guidance, she added. The QR code can be rescanned every time a customer is doing their nails, eliminating the need to save it, which is why it's printed on the box next to the nail tools.<h2>Turn interested shoppers into followers of the brand</h2>QR codes can also be used to introduce shoppers to brands. That's how Abby Price, the founder of the home-goods brand <a href="https://shopabbode.com/">Abbode</a>, and Alyssa Coscarelli, the founder of the curated-collaboration platform <a href="https://shopinfinite.com/">Infinite</a>, used the codes at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-your-brand-business-new-york-fashion-week-2022-9">their 2022 New York Fashion Week pop-up.</a>The pop-up included a collection of fashion, wellness, and home-goods items, each with a QR code that directed shoppers to the brand's Instagram account.While a pop-up creates a special experience, the duo wanted to use technologies like QR to encourage customers to connect with participating brands online, Coscarelli said.
