PVR’s Q1 show driven by pricier tickets and blockbusters

<ul><li>The multiplex behemoth now owns more than 1,650 screens across over 350 properties in 110 cities in the country.</li><li>The combined entity aims to open 180-200 screens per year, across formats, in the next two years.</li><li>The merged entity can definitely achieve bigger goals, but needs good content.</li></ul>After the merger of two <keyword id="16783584" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="multiplex-chains-PVR-and-Inox-Leisure" source="Orion">multiplex chains PVR and Inox Leisure</keyword> this year, the merged entity has become a behemoth in the country, and fifth largest listed multiplex chain globally by screen count. While the merger was announced last March, the record date for the scheme of amalgamation between the two multiplex operators happened in February 2023. The combined entity will start trading with the name PVR-INOX on exchanges in March 2023 and their combined financials would be reported from 4QFY23. The multiplex behemoth now owns more than 1,650 screens across 350 properties, in 110 cities. “PVR-INOX now controls 18% screen share (43% share in multiplex screens in India) and 30% box-office share (over 50% share of multiplex box office). The merged entity commands the highest multiplex market share in all key regions of India. PVR-INOX would become the fifth-largest listed multiplex chain globally by screen count with the highest number of admissions per screen (around 127,000 admissions/screen in 2019),” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. The combined entity aims to open 180-200 screens per year, across formats, in the next two years. “Capex per year would be ₹8-8.5 billion (₹800-850 crore). Over 40% new screen openings will come from the South as it remains underpenetrated,” said the report. While merged entity gains the lion’s share, real issue still remains poor content While the merged entity can definitely achieve bigger goals, analysts believe the real issue still remains poor content leading to flop movies on screen. “The management has guided for annual synergy benefits of ₹2.25 billion (₹225 crore) at the EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) level in the next 12-24 months,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Analysts say that the merged entity has no real competitor and should remain focused on strengthening its position at the cost of single-screen theatres and smaller chains. Yet, there are challenges that all multiplexes will face bringing in the mega footfalls. For one, the Hindi cinema industry itself is facing the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/its-not-bollywood-films-its-the-superstars-that-people-seem-to-be-tired-of/articleshow/92382077.cms">shifting trend and migration of audiences to South movies</a> which captured audiences with larger-than-life characters. Rapid adoption of OTT, proliferation of social media and an active ‘Boycott Bollywood’ campaign and higher ticket prices have impacted footfalls in theatres, say analysts at Emkay Global. “While focus of the merged entity now shifts to realising synergies, the crucial issue of footfall recovery remains moot. Post-Covid, we have witnessed a clear dichotomy in box-office performance, with a high proportion of movies turning out to be duds; we believe the main culprit is the sub-par content quality, punctured by the weak critic and audience reviews,” said a report by Emkay Global. Not star power, alone It’s because of the increasing Southern push that <keyword id="4568700" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PVR-INOX" source="Orion">PVR Inox</keyword> are planning to boost the addition of new cinemas there. “With Bollywood content not up to the mark, footfalls have not seen a meaningful uptick post Covid. Only select movies with differentiated offerings have managed to taste success at the box office. As we have emphasised in the past too, Bollywood’s recovery is critical to box-office collections, with regional and Hollywood contribution being only sporadic in nature,” said the report. Bollywood continues to witness poor movie performance with most movies including Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Goodbye and Uunchai, Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu and Ranveer Singh’s Cirkus not meeting expectations except for Drishyam 2 and Pathaan. “Going ahead too, we believe that star power alone cannot drive collections, if there is no differentiating factor in the movie,” said the Emkay Global report. In Q3 FY23, only one Bollywood movie i.e Drishyam 2 managed to break the ₹100 crore box office barrier. “CY22 has been one of the worst years for Bollywood, with very few movies finding traction. A mere 7% of the major movies that were released in the CY21/22 managed to recover their investment and yielded some profit. Prior to Covid, this was close to 30%, with more than 40% of movies doing well in CY19,” said a report by Emkay. While Inox-PVR have a bigger screen presence, they need what it takes to bring in audiences — better movies, bigger hits from Bollywood and Hollywood alike – in addition to South superhits. PVR-INOX, now fifth largest listed multiplex chain globally, awaits good movies

<ul><li>Both <keyword id="799" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pvr" source="Orion">PVR</keyword> and <keyword id="6407732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inox" source="Orion">INOX</keyword> reported their best ever quarterly performance in the June quarter of the current fiscal year.</li><li>The duo need a few big Bollywood films to keep audience from coming in, if they want to maintain their growth.</li><li>Most big budget Bollywood movies over the past few months have been duds at the boxoffice.</li></ul>Shamshera, Samraat Prithviraj and Jayeshbhai Jordaar have something in common. They aren’t just the latest Bollywood movies that couldn't bring Indians back to theatres — they’re also three successive releases of A-listers that have flopped. This lack of enthusiasm for Bollywood is not just affecting the actors and producers but also movie theatres which are banking on superhits to get back in the black – after a long period of pandemic-induced shutdown. Brokerage firms are worried that more Bollywood releases might not enthuse the OTT-saturated public to go to the theatres. It will affect footfalls, and have a cascading effect on ad revenues, the theatre chains’ ability to go in for price hikes and more. Several analysts quizzed Inox’s director Siddharth Jain about the same during the quarterly earnings conference call. Jain emphasised multiple times that bad movies would not have an impact on the footfall for its business. “Q1 [April to June] has been great but after that few movies have not done well. That does not mean that people will shy away from coming to the theatres… One or two movies not working, or one month not doing well, does not mean that people will refrain from coming to the theatre to watch a movie or the entire pipeline is bad,” he said. Yet, analysts are not mollified. They do not believe that the audience is ready to go back to watch ‘average movies’, especially since they’re spoilt for choice by multiple OTT options, in addition to traditional TV. When big movies flop, theatres lose as much as producers. “The most prioritized goal for multiplexes like PVR and INOX is to fill the theatre with audiences to maximise their profit. But flop movies fail them to accomplish this goal. He emphasised that the quality of movies that came out between April and June was “exceptional” and that had a big role to play in people’s enthusiasm for watching movies in theatres. “The consumer appeal for movie theatres is very much intact and it’s also the quality of content,” he noted. The theatres did a stellar March business thanks to South hits like KGF and RRR in addition to Kashmir Files and Gangubai Kathiawadi. In spite of the sales, the two listed movie chains — Inox and PVR both posted net losses for the first quarter of ₹239 crore and ₹478 crore in the fourth quarter, respectively. They’re still on the road to recovery and for that, they need more ‘recovery worthy movies’, and that can only come from Bollywood. According to analysts, while South movies helped in the past, only big Bollywood movies that are released across multiple screens can bring them the recovery that they need. <table Ranveer Singh’s 83 did average business, while Puspa released along with it, was the lone outlier that was a superhit. As per PVR’s own admission, in spite of high expectations of blockbuster performance from movies in the pipeline, they do not expect a full recovery for another six months. “Our sense is, by December of this year, where we have had a big run of films, effectively recovery should take shape fully because you must also understand that in a country like India, there is a very large segment of people who show up at the theatres only once or twice a year,” Nitin Sood, CFO of PVR, said. This whole struggle is inextricably tied to already low ad revenue, which is a big part of revenue for any multiplex business. Both PVR and INOX, despite a strong movie pipeline in Q1, have not yet reached their pre-Covid ad revenue figures. Reaching there will depend on good content. “Good content is very important for a client, because he knows that content will have footfall and there will be more people seeing his ads. There will be more eyeballs watching his ads,” Jain added. Till the movies release, it will be a wait-and-watch game to see if Bollywood delivers the blockbusters that the theatres desperately need. Bollywood’s flops now pose a big risk to multiplex chains

Blockbuster films like KGF: Chapter 2, RRR, Bhool Bhulaiya 2 and Doctor Strange compelled audiences to step back into theatres between April and June. INOX, on Wednesday, reported its highest ever quarterly revenue, EBITDA and net profit since its inception two decades ago. PVR, which announced its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/pvrs-q1-show-driven-by-pricier-tickets-and-blockbusters-like-kgf-2-rr-bhool-bhulaiya/articleshow/93027576.cms">quarterly results two weeks ago</a>, had also achieved the same milestones in the quarter ending June 30. However, PVR has managed to outperform INOX in the April-June quarter of 2022 with almost double the revenue. INOX’s revenue stood at ₹589 crore in the April to June quarter of 2022, representing an astronomical 22-fold jump from ₹26 crore revenue reported a year earlier. The company also managed to turn its year-ago quarter’s net loss of ₹101 crore into a profit of ₹74 crore for Q1 of FY2023. Notably, PVR and INOX are in the middle of a merger to create the largest multiplex chain with more than 1,500 screens in India. Siddharth Jain, the director of INOX Group, during the analyst call noted the footfall to the theatres would not be impacted even if any of these movies did not perform well. Four brokerage firms — ICICI Securities/Direct, Motilal Oswal, Prabhudas Lilladher and ShareKhan — are also of the opinion that a strong movie pipeline can change the fate of movie theatre chains like PVR and INOX as they attract more footfall. PVR manages to outperform INOX in Q1 of FY2023

<ul><li>India’s second-largest telecom company Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword> reported average revenue per user of ₹193 for Q4, unchanged from the December quarter. </li><li>Airtel’s revenue in the March quarter rose 14% YoY and 0.5% sequentially to ₹36,009 crore, in line with analyst estimates. </li><li>The company also said it will finish the rollout of 5G services by the end of 2023, ahead of its planned completion timeline of March 2024. </li></ul>India’s second-largest telecom company Bharti Airtel on Tuesday reported a 50% year-on-year (YoY) rise in Q4 net profit to ₹3,006 crore. On a sequential basis, the telco reported an 89% increase in net profit from ₹1,588 crore in Q3, higher than analyst <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/bharti-airtel-q4-preview-revenue-growth-to-be-modest-flat-arpu-eyed/articleshow/100253344.cms">estimates</a> of a 54% rise. Airtel’s revenue in the March quarter rose 14% YoY and 0.5% sequentially to ₹36,009 crore, in line with analyst estimates. For FY23, Airtel’s net profit nearly doubled to ₹8,346 crore, while revenue rose 19.4% to ₹1.39 lakh crore. Its spectrum usage charges fell 6% YoY to ₹2,828 crore while its overall expenses rose 12% to ₹17,312 crore in the March quarter. Airtel’s average revenue per user (ARPU) remained unchanged at ₹193 in Q4 when compared with the December quarter, while its 4G subscriber base increased to 224.1 million from 216.7 million in Q3. Overall, its 4G subscribers as a percentage of total subscribers stood at 67% in Q4, up from 62% in the same period a year ago. “Our focus on acquiring quality customers has resulted in 7.4 million new 4G customers, as we exit the quarter with an industry leading ARPU of ₹193,” said Gopal Vittal, managing director, Bharti Airtel. Also aiding Airtel’s ARPU growth in the March quarter was a 20.5% YoY increase in data consumption at 20.3GB per user per month. In terms of margins, too, Airtel reported a moderate uptick during the March quarter. The telco’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) margins rose to 52.2% in Q4, from 50.76% a year ago. “A simple strategy and our relentless focus on execution has ensured that we close the year with market share gains across all businesses. On the basis of strong advance bookings, Elara Capital expects a strong opening with earnings of ₹20-22 crore over the weekend. “The lifetime box office (collection) for the film is estimated to be in a wide range of ₹130-200 crore, basis the strong advances,” says a media note by the brokerage firm. However, the science fiction movie as it’s being called, has been made over a massive budget of ₹410 crore and even if the upper end is breached it will earn only half of what was spent on its making. The movie is bankrolled by Karan Johar owned Dharma Productions along with Starlight Pictures, Prime Focus and Star Studios. The movie stars Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt and is the first of the franchise of three movies. “Brahmastra is the first sci-fi based Hindi franchise, and augurs well, as audiences want to watch large scale content in cinemas with visual effects. The film has seen strong acceptance/advances in the premium format screens (Imax, 3D etc), given the nature of content,” said Karan Taurani of Elara Capital. Word-of-mouth publicity But even for the movie to earn ₹200 crore, it would need a lot of good reviews that would bring the audience to the theatres. “We believe a positive word of mouth and audience acceptance can help the film breach the upper end. HPCL The board of the Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) approved a ₹2,500 crore share buyback plan as the company management feels the share price is lower than the value it deserves. In a stock exchange filing, HPCL said it would buy back up to 10 crore shares for no more than ₹250/share. The net profit of the company also nearly doubled in the second quarter led by a surge in refining margins and inventory gains. The net profit in July-September stood at ₹2,477 crore as compared to ₹1,052 crore in a year-ago period. The shares of HPCL ended 0.83% higher on Wednesday, SBI Cards SBI Cards and Payment Services (SBI Card) has launched credit cards in partnership with the digital payment platform Paytm. The shares of Raymond Limited closed 3% higher on Monday. SAIL: Steel Authority of India Steel Authority of India reported a net loss of ₹1,226.5 crore for the quarter ended June 30. Ashok Leyland Hinduja Group-owned Ashok Leyland launched a new light commercial vehicle (LCV) yesterday.
