The way <keyword id="19970180" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="microplastics" source="keywords">microplastics</keyword> and <keyword id="20128857" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nanoplastics" source="keywords">nanoplastics</keyword> have found a way to wriggle into every nook and cranny on Earth, they’ve also made their way into the human body. From human placentas to testicles, these pesky pollutants are everywhere! And earlier this year, scientists also found microplastics in the gunk that clogs your arteries. <em>Yep</em>.<br /><br />Their <a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMoa2309822?logout=true">research</a> focused on 257 people undergoing a procedure to remove fatty deposits, called plaques, from their neck arteries. These plaques can narrow the arteries, restricting blood flow and potentially leading to <keyword id="21413421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cardiovascular-events" source="keywords">cardiovascular events</keyword>. Researchers examined the removed <keyword id="20594094" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="plaque" source="keywords">plaque</keyword> material and found a surprising result: over half (58%) contained microplastics and even smaller nanoparticles.<br />  <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="110327795" title="Plastic testes: Scientists analyse human testicles, find microplastics in every single one of them!" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>But the presence of plastic wasn't the only red flag. Participants with plastic in their plaques also had higher levels of inflammatory markers. Inflammation plays a crucial role in plaque buildup and blood clot formation, both major contributors to heart attacks and strokes.<br /><br />Furthermore, the study followed these participants for nearly three years after their plaque removal. Worryingly, those with plastic in their plaques were 4.5 times more likely to experience a heart attack, stroke or death compared to those without plastic.<br /><br />However, it's important to remember that this study doesn't definitively prove microplastics cause <keyword id="19898369" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heart-disease" source="keywords">heart disease</keyword>. The participants with plastic in their plaques were also more likely to have other established risk factors like smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes.<br /><br /><h2>Experts weigh in</h2>Since microplastics are a relatively recent thing in the long history of humanity, scientists are still scratching the surface of the implications of plastic in the human body. In the meantime, many continue to believe that when they aren’t strangulating turtles or taking 500 years to decompose, plastics are nifty little things.<br /><br />However, the findings of this study throws a big class of cold water on these beliefs. While the study can't establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship, researchers believe it highlights a potential new risk factor that deserves further investigation. Previous studies on animals and human cells have already hinted at the potential harm microplastics can cause to the heart and circulatory system.<br /><br />Professor Bryan Williams of the British Heart Foundation finds the findings "concerning." He emphasises the importance of this research, suggesting <keyword id="19970182" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="plastic-pollution" source="keywords">plastic pollution</keyword> may be harming our hearts in ways we haven't fully understood.<br /><br /><h2>The bottom line</h2>The study has limitations. It focused on a relatively small group with pre-existing arterial narrowing, so the results may not be applicable to the general population. Additionally, it's difficult to completely rule out contamination during plaque analysis.<br /><br />More recently, another <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0304389424004345">study</a> conducted by Chinese researchers also found plastics like <keyword id="19953017" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pet" source="keywords">PET</keyword>, followed by PA, <keyword id="20137591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pvc" source="keywords">PVC</keyword> and PE in three types of arteries, and linked it to the risk of atherosclerosis.<br /><br />While more research is undoubtedly needed, these studies raise important questions about the potential health risks of microplastics. Completely avoiding plastic exposure might be challenging, but there are well-established ways to reduce your risk of heart disease. Dozens of people died. AccuWeather has since estimated the storm's damages -- which included crop losses, power bills, water disruption, burst pipes, loss of life, lost wages, damaged infrastructure, and business and school closures -- <a href="https://www.accuweather.com/en/winter-weather/damages-from-feb-snowstorms-could-be-as-high-as-155b/909620">at $150 billion</a>, with most of that from the state of Texas alone. </p><p>The storm's impact is reaching the country and globe now, as many petrochemical plants in the state struggle to re-open, compounding shortages already created by the 2020 hurricane season, WSJ said.</p><p>The freeze in Texas, which is one of largest exporters of plastics and other petrochemical products, caused production of 75% of polyethylene, 62% of polypropylene, and 57% of <keyword id="376290" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="PVC">PVC</keyword> to shut, the Journal said, citing S&amp;P Global Platts. Re-opening the plants, the Journal noted, is a painstaking and dangerous process that takes more than the flip of a switch.</p><p>Prices for polyethylene and polypropylene saw their biggest jump in 10 years, and they likely won't ease until closer to the end of the year, which in turn means higher spending costs for consumers, WSJ reported.</p><p>"It's going to get ugly. Eat right, exercise, get adequate sleep, manage your stress, avoid smoking and limit alcohol — these are some of the recommendations men receive to maintain a healthy <keyword id="20687206" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sperm-count" source="keywords">sperm count</keyword>. But what if, even after following all this advice, the sperm count gets affected due to the nature of the world we live in?<br /><br />A new study has discovered <keyword id="19970180" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="microplastics" source="keywords">microplastics</keyword> in <keyword id="21759251" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="human-testicles" source="Orion">human testicles</keyword>, raising concerns about their potential link to <keyword id="21759246" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="declining-sperm-counts" source="keywords">declining sperm counts</keyword> in men.<br /><br />Researchers tested 23 human testes and 47 testes from pet dogs. After dissolving the tissue samples and analysing the plastic remnants, they found <keyword id="21759247" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="microplastic-pollution" source="keywords">microplastic pollution</keyword> in every single sample!<br /><br />The human <keyword id="21742117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="testicles" source="keywords">testicles</keyword> exhibited a plastic concentration nearly three times higher than that found in dog testes: 330 micrograms per gram of tissue compared to 123 micrograms. Polyethylene, commonly used in plastic bags and bottles, was the most prevalent microplastic found, followed by PVC.<br /><br />PVC is known to release chemicals that interfere with spermatogenesis and contains substances that disrupt the endocrine system, which produces and regulates hormones crucial for numerous bodily functions, including growth, metabolism and reproduction.<br /><br />Furthermore, the human testes analysed were obtained from postmortems conducted in 2016, with the men aged between 16 and 88 at the time of their deaths. Given the increased <keyword id="19970182" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="plastic-pollution" source="keywords">plastic pollution</keyword> since then, researchers are particularly concerned about its impact on younger generations.<br /><br />While the preserved human testicles couldn’t have their sperm counts measured, the dog testes—obtained from veterinary neutering operations—were assessable. Findings showed lower sperm counts in samples with higher PVC contamination. While this shows a correlation, further research is needed to definitively prove that microplastics cause declining sperm counts.<br /><br />In addition to testicles, microplastics have also recently been found in human blood, placentas and breast milk, indicating widespread contamination of human bodies. Laboratory studies have shown that microplastics can damage human cells. Moreover, these particles might lodge in tissues and cause inflammation, while the chemicals in plastics could be harmful as well. In March, doctors warned of life-threatening effects, noting a significantly increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and early death in people with contaminated blood vessels.<br /><br />Microplastics have already polluted the entire planet, from the summit of Mount Everest to the deepest oceans. Therefore, their presence in the innermost parts of the human body, while alarming, is not entirely surprising. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Yadira Raygoza earns $53 an hour and has juggled family, work, and studying for the last five years.</li><li>As a 26-year-old construction worker, Raygoza said she's had to adapt her communication style to men.</li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Yadira Raygoza, a 26-year-old construction worker. This essay has been edited for length and clarity. Business Insider verified her identity, employment, and hourly pay rate.</em></p><p>I applied to an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electrician-switched-medicine-surgeon-degree-college-pre-med-gen-z-2024-5">electrical construction</a> apprenticeship with IBEW, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, when I was 19.</p><p>I never expected to go into electrical construction, but I started a family early and I wanted to pursue my own personal goals while having a flexible schedule.</p><p>My brother joined the program and after hearing about how he was able to start a career without having to go through <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-degree-student-loans-value-worth-it-survey-wsj-2023-3">four years of college followed by debt</a>, I decided to do the same.</p><p>The apprenticeship takes several years and involves <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-enrollment-declining-student-debt-job-market-politics-2023-3">schooling while working</a>. My hourly rate has increased based on my experience and hours worked. In the last year, I made $53 an hour and worked five days a week. I also attended night school in the evening twice a week for three hours, and every other Saturday while studying for exams.</p><p>I've been on maternity leave for the last month, but I passed my state exam, so when I return I'll make $63 an hour.</p><h2 id="2b0a49c3-7cb5-450b-9c79-49affc70bb31">It's been challenging</h2><p>I've had to juggle having a family, studying, and working for the last five years — and it's also a pretty physically demanding job.</p><p>Commercial work requires pulling wire for pretty big gear and panels for metro stations. It's a big wire to pull for long destinations. We also land the wire into panels and run a lot of RMC/PVC conduits for station communication, power, and lighting systems, including underground work.</p><p>The work involves a lot of pushing, carrying, crawling, and ladder work. We also have to do calculations sometimes. Being familiar with the Pythagorean theorem and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://study.com/academy/lesson/sohcahtoa-definition-example-problems-quiz.html">SOHCAHTOA</a> will make installations easier. Algebra II is also needed for wire pulling and other electrical calculations.</p><p>The job also involves a lot of specific language regarding materials, tasks, tools, safety, and work planning. There's a lot to keep track of and changes within each work project, such as materials and installations.</p><h2 id="779f06f5-c8a4-4689-97b5-dbc8aab367e2">I've yet to work directly with another woman</h2><p id="779f06f5-c8a4-4689-97b5-dbc8aab367e2">In over five years of working in this field, there have been other women employed on projects, but they are very few, and I've personally never worked with one.</p><p id="779f06f5-c8a4-4689-97b5-dbc8aab367e2">The guys are great, but it's an adjustment to work with all men. They can come off as rougher even if they're not trying to be. I've had to learn to distinguish different tones and it's given me thicker skin and helped me work on my emotional intelligence.</p><p id="779f06f5-c8a4-4689-97b5-dbc8aab367e2">We need more female representation in this field though.</p><p id="779f06f5-c8a4-4689-97b5-dbc8aab367e2">Right now, I'm pregnant, and in California, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/maternity-leave-around-the-world-2018-5">you can go on leave starting at 36 weeks</a>. But considering the kind of work we do, I wouldn't encourage someone who's seven months pregnant to be on a ladder.</p><h2 id="e3265d45-cafd-4418-a9e6-e971d0050134">The money and lifestyle have helped me live comfortably and start a family early</h2><p id="4030ea2b-0016-4937-8c00-194b0afd638e">I usually start work at 5 a.m., have two breaks, and finish at 1:30 p.m. in time to pick up my son at 2:30 p.m. Then I take him to practice, cook dinner, and spend the evening with him before I go to bed around 10 p.m.</p><p id="4030ea2b-0016-4937-8c00-194b0afd638e">I also spend weekends with my family which is important to us.</p><p>If I had taken the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/culinary-mechanics-construction-trade-program-increase-college-enrollment-decreases-study-2023-4">college route</a>, I would have come out with at least $30,000 in debt. I also would have had to do internships and get low pay for experience. A lot of my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-zers-talking-about-money-troubles-tiktok-finance-high-cost-2024-2">friends my age are struggling with expenses.</a></p><p id="4030ea2b-0016-4937-8c00-194b0afd638e">I'm grateful for the apprenticeship because I've been able to keep up with our expenses and was able to buy a house at 25, which I cosigned with my mother-in-law.</p><p id="4030ea2b-0016-4937-8c00-194b0afd638e">The other nice part about the program is there are a lot of companies within it. If I were to get laid off, I could go to the port of the apprenticeship and get dispatched to another company.</p><p id="4030ea2b-0016-4937-8c00-194b0afd638e">I also find parts of the job satisfying. I like being able to go through the process of building something — not only seeing it happen but being hands-on with it is very satisfying. It's something that I enjoy a lot, and it's part of what has kept me around.</p>

One aspect that always garners much traction on the <keyword id="19936553" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Budget" source="keywords">Budget</keyword> day is what got <keyword id="20257498" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cheaper" source="keywords">cheaper</keyword> and what got <keyword id="20286063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="costlier" source="keywords">costlier</keyword>.<br /><br />Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> as part of her Budget presentation proposed a host of tweaks in basic <keyword id="20454068" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="customs-duty" source="keywords">customs duty</keyword> (BCD) for various products or items that are critical for manufacturing.<br /><br />In her Budget speech, Sitharaman proposed an exemption on customs duty on certain <keyword id="22516435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cancer-medicines" source="keywords">cancer medicines</keyword> and a reduction in duties on <keyword id="19920958" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-phone" source="keywords">mobile phone</keyword> parts and chargers, aimed at bringing down their prices in the retail market.<br /><br />"With a three-fold increase in domestic production and almost 100-fold jump in exports of mobile phones over the last six years, the Indian mobile phone industry has matured. In the interest of consumers, I now propose to reduce the BCD on mobile phone, mobile PCBA and mobile charger to 15 per cent," said Sitharaman in her Budget speech that lasted around 90 minutes.<br /><br />To provide relief to cancer patients, she proposed to fully exempt three more medicines from customs duties.<br /><br />Imported <keyword id="19895579" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold" source="keywords">gold</keyword>, silver, leather goods and seafood will also get cheaper, as duties were invariably lowered on them. Duty cut on gold would boost retail demand and help in curtailing smuggling in the world's second-biggest bullion market.<br /><br />"To enhance domestic value addition in gold and precious metal jewellery in the country, I propose to reduce customs duties on gold and silver to 6 per cent and that on platinum to 6.4 per cent."<br /><br />She also proposed changes in the customs duty on X-ray tubes and flat panel detectors for use in medical X-ray machines under the <keyword id="20330318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="phased-manufacturing-programme" source="keywords">Phased Manufacturing Programme</keyword>, so as to synchronise them with domestic capacity addition.<br /><br />Also, she proposed to fully exempt customs duties on 25 critical minerals and reduce basic customs duty on two of them.<br /><br />Minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt and rare earth elements are critical for sectors like nuclear energy, renewable energy, space, defence, telecommunications, and high-tech electronics, said the finance minister.<br /><br />"This will provide a major fillip to the processing and refining of such minerals and help secure their availability for these strategic and important sectors," Sitharaman said.<br /><br />Putting energy transition on focus, as it is critical in the fight against climate change, the finance minister proposed to expand the list of exempted capital goods for use in the manufacture of solar cells and panels in the country.<br /><br />However, in view of sufficient domestic manufacturing capacity of solar glass and tinned copper interconnect, it was proposed not to extend the exemption of customs duties provided to them.<br /><br />To enhance competitiveness in marine products, the reduced duty on certain broodstock, polychaete worms, shrimp and fish feed to 5 per cent, besides exempting customs duty on various inputs for manufacture of shrimp and fish feed.<br /><br />Moving on to leather and textile, reduction in duty was announced for various items.
