With the steep hike in <keyword id="169012" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="yarn" source="Orion">yarn</keyword> prices continuing the garment industries in <keyword id="6517945" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tiruppur" source="Orion">Tiruppur</keyword> are in crisis. Several units are not functioning for the past several months with most of them getting outsourced orders from major garment exporters. Exporters of Tiruppur, which is considered the knitwear hub of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, are in a tough situation as they are unable to execute international orders that they have taken. This, according to exporters, would lead to the market going elsewhere. It may be noted that Bangladesh and Vietnam are two major contenders for European and United States markets along with India and Sri Lanka. While the economic crisis in Sri Lanka has already taken its toll on that country, with the industry slumping, the spiraling yarn prices have led to a grinding halt for several units in Tiruppur. It may be noted that the prices of all varieties of Yarn were moving around Rs 220-290 per kg during 2021 but after the yarn mill owners increased prices, the commodity touched more than Rs 400 per kilogram. The exporters are not able to negotiate prices with the buyers and hence there is a decline in the orders as high yarn prices take the industry to losses. An exporter who does not want to be named, while speaking to IANS said: "High yarn prices are making it difficult for us to negotiate orders. In August 2021, the prices of one kilogram of yarn were 220, but now the prices in April -May have touched around Rs 440 per kg." He said that the industry cannot survive at the price of yarn as there would be huge losses to the exporters and hence most of the companies are either shut or operating with a minuscule workforce. The exporter said that as they could not employ, a large number of workers from North Indian states and from North Eastern states have left Tiruppur for good. Several local workers from the districts of <keyword id="103531" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pudukottai" source="Orion">Pudukottai</keyword>, Dindigul, <keyword id="6373821" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="madurai" source="Orion">Madurai</keyword>, and <keyword id="185024" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tiruvannamalai" source="Orion">Tiruvannamalai</keyword> have also left for their home districts as there are no jobs in Tiruppur. There is no work and we were earning around 23000 Rs per month. I don't know what I am going to do in my village other than farming. However, farming will not yield much money, and my family consisting of a father, mother, wife, and two children will have to starve. It's a very sad state of affairs." Notably, there are around 1.30 lakh migrant workers in the various garment factories of Tiruppur and if the crisis continues, it will affect a large number of families who are dependent on this industry. Tiruppur garment industry in crisis due to a steep rise in yarn prices

Alarmed at a large number of <keyword id="99472" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="child-marriages" source="Orion">child marriages</keyword> being reported in the state, the <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword> <keyword id="6356140" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="social-welfare" source="Orion">Social Welfare</keyword> department is to conduct awareness campaigns across all 38 districts. According to the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment department data, an average of 10 child marriages have taken place in the state per day this year so far. The data stated that 2,516 child marriages were reported during January to August. The department stated that of the 2,516 child marriages reported, 1782 marriages could be stopped while 734 took place. Of this Namakkal district reported the maximum cases with 182 child marriages reported from the district alone. Police have registered 548 FIRs in connection with the child marriages in the state. The Social Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu, alarmed by the rise in the number of child marriages, is conducting awareness programmes across the state. The department is in the process of shooting small videos involving movie and television stars and spreading awareness in movie theatres as well as in between popular television programmes. Social Welfare Department sources told IANS that the number of child marriages is high in Namakkal, Cuddalore, Dindigul, <keyword id="6357470" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="salem" source="Orion">Salem</keyword>, <keyword id="198434" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="krishnagiri" source="Orion">Krishnagiri</keyword>, Theni, Tiruchi and <keyword id="6357779" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="erode" source="Orion">Erode</keyword> districts with the Namakkal district at the top with maximum number of cases. The police and the Social Welfare department has successfully stopped 95 per cent of the child marriages in Ariyalur, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Pudukottai districts of the state and this is due to the vigil maintained by the neighbours and some social organisations active in the empowerment of children, especially girl children. SEEK, an NGO based out of Salem district was at the forefront of the campaign against the child labour. Rajamohan Das, the director of SEEK while speaking to IANS said, "The prevalence of Child Marriages in many parts of Tamil Nadu is due to poverty and in some cases due to social structures in communities. This has to be changed for sure and awareness and stringent legal action are the only means to prevent these inhuman acts. We are doing our bit but the issue is at a macro level and the positive intervention of the government is the need of the hour." The Social welfare department is in the process of preparing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for handling child marriage cases across the state. The department was also planning to rope in the state school education department and rural department to prevent child marriages as reporting from schools will help prevent most of the marriages. Rural departments can be helpful in identifying individuals gearing up to conduct the marriage of their under-aged children. A senior officer of the social welfare department while speaking to IANS said, "Child marriages can be prevented if all the departments join together as well as there is community pressure against this. Chennai, Oct 22 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K.Palaniswami on Thursday said once the Covid-19 vaccine is ready, it will be administered to people free of cost. Speaking in Pudukottai, Palaniswami said that the cost of administering the vaccine to all in the state will be borne by the state government. Chennai, Aug 23 () People stayed indoors and roads were deserted as Tamil Nadu observed a complete lockdown on Sunday as part of efforts to fight COVID-19. While only healthcare services and milk supplies were operational, violators of norms in urban and semi-urban localities in districts including Kancheepuram, Pudukottai, and Virudhunagar were finedby local authorities. Vegetable, meat, and fish vendors were among those fined. Tamil Nadu police said a fine of Rs 21.26 crore has so far been levied across the state as on Sunday for violation of curbs and 6.88 lakh vehicles seized. The complete lockdown, effective since last month on all Sundays, saw closure of fuel pumps, markets and stores selling essential commodities while officials inspected their jurisdictional localities to check violations. Government-run TASMAC liquor outlets were also closed today like previous Sundays. Since today is a 'muhurtham' day considered auspicious, a number of couples tied the knot in front of temples, though they were closed down like a man and woman before the Sri Kolanjiappar temple at Virudhachalam in Cuddalore district. Cargo vehicles operated as usual while police put up barricades and set up checkposts across the State to check violations for effective implementation of the curbs. Amma Canteens and healthcare services -hospitals, pharmacies and labs- were open and sanitary workers went on with their clean up work. Personnel of civic bodies conducted door-to-door surveys to detect people with flu-like symptoms in addition to fever camps and disinfection tasks were not halted. VGN SS

deaths, toll now 84 Chennai, May 19 () An additional 688 cases of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday took the state's cumulative tally of the virus past 12,000, with the state recording three more deaths, the government said. The state's overall fatalities from coronavirus stood at 84 even as Tamil Nadu witnessed a marginal spike in the daily numbers compared to Monday, when the tally stood at 536. Chennai continued to witness an upward trend of infections as 552 new cases were added today, as the overall numbers reached 7,672. Pudukottai has the least number of cases at 7, even as many of the 37 districts reported nil infections. The total number of positive cases stood at 12,448, while 54 people who had arrived from other countries have tested positive for the contagion so far, a Health department bulletin said. Among the infected was a six month old boy and all the 688 cases are contacts, according to the Health department. As many as 49 of the infected people had arrived from Maharashtra and one from Kerala. The number of active cases stood at 7,466, including those in isolation, it said. Three men, aged between 64-82, died in a government hospital, it said. "Till now 3,48,174 samples have been taken and sent for testing. TN reports 688 fresh COVID-19 cases, tally crosses 12K; three

(Eds: Adds details) Chennai, May 24 (): Tamil Nadu on Sunday recorded eight deaths due to COVID-19, taking the toll to 111 while 765 fresh cases saw the state's total infections breaching the 16,000 mark, the Health department said. A total of 833 people were discharged with the number eclipsing the day's new cases as the cumulative recoveries rose to 8,324, it said. The metropolis remained the worst hit, accounting for 587 more cases and its total alone crossed the 10,000 mark touched 10,576 out of the state's tally of 16,277. This was the fifth consecutive day when the state recorded over 700 cases and the number of active cases stood at 7,839. As many as 47 new cases were people who returned to the state from various places, including overseas, the bulletin said. Six people from the state capital and a 65-year old man and a 50-year old man from neighbouring Thiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts respectively became the latest fatalities to the deadly virus, the bulletin said adding all the eight were suffering from various ailments. According to the health department, 44 people travelled from Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Kerala and Karnataka and one each from Dubai, London and The Philippines tested positive for the virus on Sunday. Among those tested positive include 464 men and 301 women, the bulletin said. A man and woman, aged 96 and 95, and two one month old babies, all hailing from city, were among those who contracted the contagion on Sunday. Besides Chennai, neighbouring Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts witnessed hikes in the number of new cases. As many as 23 districts recorded 'nil' cases on Sunday while Ariyalur, Pudukottai, Theni and Thiruvarur registered one positive case each. Chennai, Apr 25 () A 34-year old man died ofCOVID-19 at a government hospital here and 94 people weredischarged following recovery while 66 tested positive forcoronavirus in Tamil Nadu on Saturday taking the tally ofcases to 1,821, authorities said.More people getting discharged than those gettingnewly infected is seen for the third consecutive day today inthe State.On April 23, a total of 54 new cases were reported and90 people were discharged and the following day, 72 testedpositive and 114 got cured.The deceased man is the 23rd fatality in Tamil Naduand he died at Chromepet General Hospital here last night, agovernment bulletin said.With 66 more people contracting the contagion, thoughthe total number of infected stood at 1,821; as on date, theactive cases were only 835 and the tally of those dischargedis 960 including Saturday's 94, the government said.As of now, there are more people who have beendischarged than the present active cases, according togovernment data.Among the newly infected today are six childrenincluding a two-year old girl and a four year old boy, bothfrom Chennai.As many as 7,707 samples were tested today and tilldate 80,110 samples have been examined.For COVID-19 testing, there are 30 labs in governmentand 11 in private sectors.Chennai added 43 new cases today and the State capitalled the red zone (more than 15 cases) of COVID-19 map with 495cases followed by Coimbatore (141) and Tirupur (110).Pudukottai and Dharmapuri districts have one case eachand these were among the least affected regions.Barring the seven districts of Tiruvannamalai,Kallakurichi, Dharmapuri, the Nilgiris, Ariyalur, Pudukottaiand Sivaganga in the orange zone with less than 15 cases andthe only greendistrict of Krishnagiri -with no new case inthe last 28 days- all other districts feature in the redzone.While as many as 27,277 people are in home quarantine,25 others are in government quarantine facilities. Chennai, Apr 23 () Two elderly people, including awoman died of COVID-19 here on Thursday and as many as 90were discharged following recovery in a single day while thecount of newly infected by coronavirus stood at 54,authorities said.Cumulatively, so far 752 patients have recovered from theillness caused by the virus and today alone 90 were dischargedfrom various hospitals following recovery, a governmentbulletin said.While the bulletin said "there are two deaths," anofficial told that a man and a woman -one of them asexagenarian and another a septuagenarian- died here and theState has till date witnessed an aggregate number of 20deaths.The number of confirmatory tests carried out was also onthe upswing and today alone 6,954 samples were tested and65,977 samples examined till date since the first case wasreported in Tamil Nadu on March 8."Testing of 1,433 samples are under process. 6,025samples are repeat samples of same persons." A series of missteps by the Narendra Modi government meant that their indignation has been directed towards the incumbent alliance between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On the other side is the coalition between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Indian National Congress, the Left Front, and a set of other local parties that significance within certain segments-- either geographically or among specific sections of the electorate. While there are other regional outfits and smaller coalitions in the fray, including the iconic movie star Kamal Hasan who is making his electoral debut, almost <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/elections/lok-sabha-elections-2019/tamil-nadu/news/tamil-nadu-poll-survey-says-dmk-front-to-get-30-33-lok-sabha-seats/articleshow/68784727.cms">all opinion polls</a> in the run up to the elections have handed a landslide to the challengers led by the DMK and Congress. There are at least four big decisions that work against the incumbent <keyword id="5013725" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIADMK-BJP-Alliance">AIADMK-BJP alliance</keyword>. A small oil field In 2015, the <a href="https://www.downtoearth.org.in/news/energy/no-noble-gases-57750">Modi government approved a project to dig</a> for oil and natural gas from a 10 square kilometre field in Neduvasal, in Pudukottai district. The reason being the oil field was located in one of the more fertile parts of Tamil Nadu’s delta region around the Cauvery river. The proposal to dig for oil in the region scratched the wounds of an existing wound in the minds of the local farmers. A standoff with the neighbouring state of Karnataka over <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/a-brief-history-of-the-cauvery-dispute/tale-of-two-states/slideshow/63698683.cms">the sharing of Cauvery’s water</a> is decades old. Even after a settlement ordered by the Supreme Court, the farmers’ in Tamil Nadu’s rice bowl feel parched as well as wronged by the system. Farmers were caught by surprise when they were asked to give up their land to extract oil, while they were still hoping to their share of water to till the land. A big highway Farmers have been up in arms in five other districts too, far away from Neduvasal. The point of contention is an eight-lane expressway stretching nearly 280 kilometres west from the state capital Chennai to the industrial town of Salem. Once again the BJP has found itself in the firing line of the voters as it continues to push for the project despite stiff resistance that the party’s rivals have capitalised on. The Madras High Court on April 8 quashed the land acquisition process for the Chennai-Salem Expressway project. The challenging coalition led by Congress and the DMK have vowed to scrap the project if voted to power. A medical entrance test Seventeen-year-old Anitha, an aspiring medical student, committed suicide in September 2017 after she failed to clear the then newly-introduced medical entrance exam, that goes by the acronym NEET. The National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) replaced the admission tests for medical colleges across the country with a centralised process. The <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/why-neet-election-issue-tamil-nadu-98604">people’s resentment against NEET</a> stems from the view that it puts local students, even the high-scorers, at a disadvantage because the curriculum is structured based on the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which is different from the state syllabus. The state administration’s high-handed approach in the wake of protests, and <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/elections/story/piyush-goyal-neet-tamil-nadu-bjp-aiadmk-1500468-2019-04-12">the BJP’s persistence</a> on imposing NEET, has only hurt the alliance’s chances in the state. Once again, BJP’s rivals have promised to let states decide the mode of admission into medical colleges. The <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/QgYD6W50rev6VcHmGs9GKP/NEET-protests-More-states-join-the-fight.html">protests against NEET was not unique</a> to Tamil Nadu, but the outrage in the southern state was the most severe. Tamil Nadu is known for its huge population of aspiring doctors. The state has 22 medical colleges, among the highest in the country, and 4 doctors for every 1,000 people, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/6-states-have-more-doctors-than-whos-11000-guideline/articleshow/65640694.cms">nearly at par with</a> developed countries like Norway and Sweden. Despite the enduring resentment, Tamil Nadu had the <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/education/2019/feb/03/tamil-nadu-has-the-highest-number-of-doctors-who-cleared-pg-neet-1933745.html">maximum number of students</a> clearing the NEET exam in 2019. The shootout In May 2018, The Tamil Nadu Police <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/sterlite-violence-video-shows-policemen-taking-aim-and-shooting-protesters-81744">opened fire at a sea of protestors</a> outside the country’s largest copper smelter, operated by Sterlite, a Vedanta Group company. More than 10 people died in the shootout and the public anger that swelled further poured on the ruling state government led by the AIADMK. Sterlite’s plant was accused of violating pollution norms, causing fatal health issues to its workers and the population in its vicinity. Local protests against the plant have been underway in patches since 1996, and they escalated once again in 2018 leading up to the <a href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/editorials/tuticorin-massacre/594415.html">‘Tuticorin Massacre’</a>. Subsequent probe and judicial inquiry revealed gaping regulatory lapses, eventually leading to the closure of the plant pending investigations and corrections. The London-based Vedanta Group has been a big donor to <a href="https://www.thequint.com/news/india/sterlite-congress-bjp-fcra-violation-finance-bill-amendments">both the BJP and the Congress</a> between 2004 and 2015. However, BJP also found itself further on the wrong side of the debate soon after the issue came to the fore, as some of its leaders tried to colour some of the protestors as anti-social elements.

 Going into the 2019 elections, the party is in alliance with the regional party, AIADMK, which bore the brunt of the public anger. A year on, the memory of the lethal attack on protestors is still fresh among voters, particularly in the region. Over decades, a series of larger-than-life leaders, with their share of taints, from <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/india/cn-annadurai-legacy-of-a-dravidian-stalwart-6007351.html">CN Annadurai</a> to <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/magazine/cover-story/story/19880115-m.g.-ramachandran-death-marks-the-passing-of-an-era-of-stability-in-tamil-nadu-796866-1988-01-15">MG Ramachandran</a> to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/karunanidhi-1924-2018/newslist/65311339.cms">M Karunanidhi</a> and <a href="https://frontline.thehindu.com/cover-story/jayalalithaas-legacy/article9435860.ece">J Jayalalitha</a> had turned Tamil Nadu into a politically unbreachable fortress for national parties. The mandate kept passing between the DMK and AIADMK for years. However, the passing away of Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha in recent years has left a political vacuum that the national parties intended to capitalise on. Neither the BJP nor the Congress by itself has made any significant headway so far.
