<ul><li>The Union Cabinet today revealed its plan for how it plans to provide India’s 1.36 billion population with free public Wi-Fi connectivity called PM-Wani. </li><li>Any business, even tea stalls and kirana stores can sign up to provide public Wi-Fi service through public data offices (PDO).</li><li>They do not need to apply for a license, register or pay any fees, according to Union Minister <keyword id="6354886" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword>.</li></ul>The Indian government has revealed its plans to launch public Wi-Fi networks across the country called PM-Wani (Wi-fi Access Network Interface). The three-tier system is aimed at providing last-mile connectivity and bringing all of India’s population of 1.36 billion online. And, it starts at your local tea shop or kirana store. According to the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad, anyone can sign up to be a public data office (PDO). They don’t need to apply for a license, registration or cough up fees. Businesses can take services from <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>, <keyword id="2003276" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword> or any such internet service provider (ISP) and use their physical location to provide Wi-Fi to anyone who happens to be nearby. “Anyone can log on to the internet using the Wi-Fi provided by these PDOs,” he said. The second layer is the PDO aggregators. Their job is to aggregate the PDOs, their accounting and authorisation, according to Prasad. And, the final layer — the layer that the public will actually interact with — is the app provider. “The application will be available on the App Store or Google Play Store. There will be automatic digital authentication. It will be available on the government’s website as well. We will also spread awareness through newspapers,” explained Prasad. PM-Wani will empower India’s ‘digital revolution’ India currently has 120 crore mobile phone users, more than half of whom are on smartphones. The government justifies its new PM-Wani platform as the next step of India’s digital revolution. According to Prasad, the digital ecosystem — which includes direct benefit transfers, the goods and services tax network, unified payments interface, and other aspects — will be strengthened as more people have access to the internet, especially when it’s free. The Union Cabinet also approved the provision of submarine optical fibre cable connectivity between Kochi and the Lakshadweep Islands. The USOF Scheme for providing mobile coverage in Arunachal Pradesh and two districts of Assam under the Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan for North Eastern Region also got a green light. The project aims at providing mobile coverage to 2,374 uncovered villages. Lastly, they approved the setting up 1 crore data centres across the country. Government’s plan for public Wi-Fi lets anyone from the kirana store owner to tea shop stalls sign up to provide the internet

<ul><li>Cisco-Google partnership promises to provide free, high-speed public Wi-Fi zones in India.</li><li>Project currently on a roll-out mode, with 200 locations in Bengaluru identified.</li><li>Wi-Fi is seen as a means to offload traffic from mobile networks.</li></ul>Tech giant Cisco plans to begin the rollout of free, open, high-speed public Wi-Fi zones across India, soon. It will use Google’s gStation platform to create these zones, it said during Cisco India Summit 2019. The project to provide public Wi-Fi zones is already underway and is currently in its first phase of implementation. By September 2019, over 200 locations in Bengaluru, including hospitals, bus stops and government offices will be Wi-Fi enabled, followed by another 300 Wi-Fi zones in the second phase. Massive untapped potential According to a TRAI report, globally there is one Wi-Fi hotspot for every 150 users. In India, currently, there are only 52,000 Wi-Fi hotspots. To match the global ratio in India, eight million new hotspots must be installed. This has created a new market for infrastructure providers and ISPs in India. Speaking at the event, Sameer Garde, President, Cisco India &amp; SAARC, said, “We are excited to partner with Google to bring free, open, high-quality internet access to everyone in India. This also represents a significant growth opportunity, the demand for public Wi-Fi hotspots is expected to go up by 100X over the next 3 years, creating new markets for Cisco and our partners.” Wi-Fi as an extension of cellular networks Globally, telecom providers have started using Wi-Fi access points and zones as a means to offload users from the mobile network onto the more affordable Wi-Fi network. This allows users to maintain connectivity while de-congesting the mobile network. According to a report by CISCO VNI, almost 59% of the internet traffic will be offloaded from mobile networks to Wi-Fi by 2022. This market is ripe for the picking.

EXCLUSIVE- India’s Biggest Free Public Wi-Fi Network Provider Reveals How They Make It Work

New Delhi, Jan 10 () Telecom major Bharti Airtel on Friday said its mobile customers across the country can now use its Wi-Fi calling service using any Wi-Fi network.
 Airtel, which had introduced voice-over Wi-Fi last month, said the service has crossed one million users.
 The service enables customers to switch seamlessly from LTE to Wi-Fi-based calling when they are inside their homes or offices, thereby enhancing indoor voice calling experience for smartphone customers. There are no extra charges for making calls via Airtel Wi-Fi calling.
 "Following the extremely positive customer feedback, the company has accelerated the roll-out of its innovative service across the country. Airtel Wi-Fi calling is now available to Airtel mobile customers across India," a statement said.
 It added that the service can now be accessed by Airtel mobile customers over any home or public Wi-Fi network.
 The company said it has been engaging with smartphone manufacturers to make all popular smartphone models compatible with the service.
 Over 100 smartphone models across 16 brands are now compatible with Airtel Wi-Fi calling, it added.
 "The technology has transformed the indoor network quality for Airtel mobile customers, particularly in high population density areas in urban markets. Airtel is also the first to make the service LIVE across India and our customers can use the feature on any Wi-Fi," Bharti Airtel Chief Technology Officer Randeep Sekhon said.
 Earlier this week, Reliance Jio had launched voice and video calling over Wi-Fi service. The company had said Jio Wi-Fi calling, which works on the largest ecosystem of handsets, will also allow users to make video calls over Wi-Fi. SR HRS

<keyword id="905742" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi-led-government">Narendra Modi-led government</keyword> is planning for a speedy rollout of <keyword id="47655" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Wi-Fi">Wi-Fi</keyword> services across top 25 Indian cities by June 2015 states a PTI report. 
 
An official source, disclosing the information to the leading news agency, had said, "Government has plans to empanel 3-4 Wi-Fi service providers for speedy roll out of Wi-Fi hotspots across top 25 cities in the country by June 2015. The services will be available at select public places within these cities.” 
 Expansion of Internet services is one of the major steps that will take place under the BJP government’s ‘<keyword id="1929810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Digital-India">Digital India</keyword>’ initiative. By December 2015, the new government at the Centre aims to cover cities with population of over 1 million and tourist destinations with Wi-Fi services. 
 The <keyword id="62528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Department-of-Telecom">Department of Telecom</keyword> and <keyword id="162100" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Urban-Development">Ministry of Urban Development</keyword> have joined hands to enhance Internet connectivity in India. 
 According to the PTI report, the central government has also separately identified 25 archaeological monuments to provide free Wi-Fi access, which includes: Humayun's Tomb, Red Fort, Qutub Complex in Delhi, <keyword id="6355354" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Taj-Mahal">Taj Mahal</keyword>, Fatehpur Sikri Sravasti and Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, Shore Temple in Mahabalipuram, Vaishali-Kohua in Bihar, Martand Temple and Leh Palace in J&amp;K, Konark Temple in Odisha, Rani-ki Vav Gujarat, Khajuraho and Mandu in Madhya Pradesh and Rang Ghar in Assam.

25 Cities In India To Become Wi-Fi Enab​led By June 2015

The country’s <keyword id="158388" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-Commission">Telecom Commission</keyword> has <a href="https://gadgets.ndtv.com/telecom/news/in-flight-wi-fi-calls-cleared-by-indias-telecom-commission-1845449" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">approved</a> recommendations made by the <keyword id="30356" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-Regulatory-Authority-of-India">Telecom Regulatory Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="6356988" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="trai">TRAI</keyword>). TRAI had earlier recommended that voice calls, texts and WiFi be allowed on-board flights in India. Aruna Sundararajan, Telecom Secretary, stated, “Almost all recommendations by TRAI on this have been accepted. We are expediting the process and within 3-4 months, it should be ready. We will be operationalizing this decision immediately.” The only exceptions to TRAI’s original recommendation were that instead of foreign satellites and foreign gateways being permitted, an Indian satellite or a satellite that has been approved by the Department of Space would be allowed to operate in Indian airspace. The TRAI will have to create a separate category of licenses called ‘in-flight connectivity providers’. Aside from airplanes, ships would be eligible to apply as well. The token license fee would be Rs 1, applicable to anyone who wants to operate 3,000 meters above sea level. In addition to in-flight connectivity, the Telecom Commission has also approved proliferation of broadband through the public Wi-Fi network. a Telecom Ombudsman and 12 major recommendations on the ease of doing business by TRAI.

India just allowed in-flight connectivity within its airspace

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has some amazing news for <keyword id="2023759" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups-in-India">startups in India</keyword>. Pichai, while delivering a keynote address at the <keyword id="3173384" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="GoogleForIndia">#GoogleForIndia</keyword> event, said Google wanted to give India much more back to the country. 
 
“India is a key driver to Google’s growth. Google Capital to invest $20 million for Indian startups to support crowd computing,” said Pichai. 
 
Pichai wants to tap talent in India and plans to scale engineering and business, thereby revamp campuses in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Google also has plans to step up hiring in Bengaluru. 
 
“Google will ramp up engineering presence in Hyderabad to make products in India,” said the Google CEO. 
 
Speaking about the Android systems, Pichai said that by 2016, there will be more Android users in India as compared to the US. 
 
Pichai also spoke about enhancing wi-fi systems in India. 
 
“We will be rolling out 400 Google-powered public wi-fis by the end of 2016. Testing in Mumbai Railway station is underway currently. There are no plans to monetise now,” he added. 
 
Pichai will be meeting Google executives, media, developers, entrepreneurs and marketers during his stay in India. 
 
The Google CEO will also meet resident Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. 
 
Pichai will meet students of Shri Ram College of Commerce for a chat session.

CEO Sundar Pichai says Google will step up hiring, invest $20 million in Indian startups

The shares of India Pesticides were trading at ₹358.05 at 10.04 a.m. The issue was open for subscription between June 23 and June 25. The grey market had indicated a premium of ₹50-55 from its price band on Friday, which means at least 18-20% upside for the stock over the issue price. The agrochemical company is looking to raise ₹800 crore through the initial public offering (IPO). The company is one of the sole Indian manufacturers of five agrochemical technicals. The IPO had received good response from investors considering that investors have bid for 56.07 crore shares against the 1.93 crore shares on offer. The portion for qualified institutional investors was subscribed 42.95 times while the non-institutional investor category received a bid for 51.88 times. The company has said it would utilise the net proceeds from the public issue to fund working capital requirements and general corporate purposes. India Pesticides currently has registrations and licences for 22 agrochemical technicals and 125 formulations for sale in India and 27 agrochemical technicals and 35 formulations for export purposes. India Pesticides IPO: Shares list at 27% premium on exchanges

The project, which was first announced in the year 2015, aimed to provide stable internet connectivity and hence improve the wireless infrastructure of the country. The project that delivers internet to hundreds of railway station was brought into action in collaboration with <keyword id="228222" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="RailTel">RailTel</keyword>, a public sector telecom infrastructure provider, and the <keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword>. Google also has a similar project operational in Mexico and is planning to expand it to more countries. The company announced its plans to start the Google Station Internet project in Indonesian recently. Providing WiFi in the country helps bring more people online, but given that they’ll likely head to Google only, it also benefits the company. Its advertising driven revenue model is based on acquiring user data and learning how users behave on the Internet. So, by connecting more users in India, Google stands to improve its chances of monetising one of the fastest growing markets in the world. Google isn’t the only one trying to provide such services though. Facebook, the world’s largest social network, has also taken a few shots at the country. While its efforts with Free Basics were banned by India’s regulators, Facebook currently collaborates with Airtel for a service called “ExpressWiFi”. This is an app that you can download on your smartphone, which lets you buy data packs for high speed data. Facebook is collaborating with businesses to set up hotspots, which can be accessed through these hotspots.

400 railways stations in India now have Google’s free WiFi

<keyword id="167028" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nimbuzz">Nimbuzz</keyword> ran a special <keyword id="15510" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Survey">survey</keyword> (Pulse of the Nation) amongst 17,376 users of theirs for Business Insider India, which gave us a glimpse of how the mobile phone market is doing in India. While most results were close to what we had expected, some really astonished us. 
 <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> still is the most used OS and 52% of smartphone consumers use it. 15% of Indian mobile users are on BlackBerry and 13% are on iOS. Only 4% people use Windows Mobile. When asked about which android phone are you going to buy this summer? 33% said they will pick up the <keyword id="16129" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="HTC">HTC</keyword> One M8, 31% want to own the <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> Galaxy S5 and 19% said they want to grab the Sony Xperia Z2. 
 
What astonished us is that people want Wi-Fi capabilities in their phones than anything else. 42% said Wi-Fi is the most important feature for them in a mobile, 36% want better camera quality and only for 14% people said the screen size mattered. We also asked the users if they prefer clicking pictures with the mobile or capture them with a digital camera? 64% people click with a smart phone while the rest prefer the good old digital camera. Over that, 78% of the quizzed public believes that producing phones within Indian will make them cheaper. Rest believe it would not. 
 
Some interesting facts were revealed in this survey that do state that the features like screen size and speaker quality, which once stood as priority for the mobile users, has now taken a backseat. Also, Google’s Android is the most used OS out there and will continue to dominate the market.

You can only imagine how a work day for <keyword id="45395" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword> head looks like but we can tell you that, he’s now making the most of his commute thanks to better connectivity, more than ever. 
 <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword> caught up with <keyword id="249393" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajan-Anandan">Rajan Anandan</keyword>, VP, <keyword id="4405979" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-se-asia-india">Google SE Asia &amp; India</keyword> to understand how the internet landscape has changed in the past few months. 
 “India is the biggest market for us and it has a very diverse user base. We are always going to have a clear distinction between India and the US for the next several years,” says <keyword id="198577" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anandan">Anandan</keyword> on where India stands for <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>. 
 
India currently has around 400 million internet users, 300 million of them are coming online through their smartphone which makes it the second largest internet market in the world after China.

 In the past few months, a lot of things have changed in the internet landscape with low-cost carrier <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword> coming in. The Google chief thinks that this has changed things tremendously for the entire telecom sector, “There is now an enormous user base that’s spending its time online, with network providers also upgrading their services and not just giving more for less. Our mission in India is to make information accessible to everyone and that means reaching out to the massive 1.3 Billion population in the country. The Internet for everyone is the goal,” said Anandan. 
 
The first challenge for Google is Access and they’ve tackled that with providing high-speed public Wi-Fi at railway stations and after covering 110 stations, we now have 5 million Indians accessing it every day. With 500, 000 Indians accessing the internet with Google India for the first time, the company plans to extend it to 400 stations by the year 2018.

 With revolutionary projects like Smart Cities, Google is partnering with the government at <keyword id="3025354" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pune-Smart-City">Pune Smart City</keyword> to provide high-speed Wi-Fi. 
The other concerns are connectivity and affordability and while currently, there at 125 million 4G subscribers and 150 million 3G subscribers, there are still issues like patchy connectivity. 
 Google is trying to get a lot of its services like <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword>, Maps and even Chrome offline to make the internet more accessible to most Indians. There’s Search Lite which detects how slow is your network and works accordingly.

​ “Google is building new products like recently released YouTube Go which are specifically designed for Indians. With only 15 million women villagers online, we are working to bridge the gap with Google Sathi where women teach other how to use the internet for the betterment of their lives,” <keyword id="6355561" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajan">Rajan</keyword> says proudly proclaiming that there are 80,000 Google Saathis across 60,000 villages that they’re working in. 
 The next milestone for this technology behemoth is reaching half of India's villages with <keyword id="4408602" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-saathi">Google Saathi</keyword> and making the internet accessible to the people who need it the most, not just for information but for opportunities to a better connected life.
