The following has been edited for length and clarity.I attended Cornell University and double majored in global and public health sciences and sociology.Based on my mother's income, I received nearly $300,000 in grants to help pay for college. I also ran Division One track and field, which helped me travel to tournaments internationally.Now, I balance traveling frequently with two teaching jobs. Berkeley, studying sociology</h2>The first year was remote because of the pandemic, so I took classes online. After the pandemic, I moved to campus.As part of my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-got-doctorate-studied-while-raising-young-kids-parenting-2024-4">Ph.D. program</a>, I must teach one class each semester and summer since I don't have outside funding. I started teaching courses, and I also grade assignments and conduct office hours.I'm supposed to be physically present there, but I do this work virtually and teach virtual classes. Professors don't verify that I'm on campus — I do everything through Zoom.<h2 id="fd30a4c1-e786-407a-99b5-45d1fe86189c">I first quietly vacationed in December 2020</h2>I had the opportunity to speak at a conference in Dubai, and the Dubai government funded my transportation and hotel.I said yes because being in Dubai for five days was a good experience. I didn't tell the university I was gone. After that, I was hooked.I went to Colombia at the beginning of 2021 and the Ivory Coast later that year. I committed to myself to go on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quiet-vacation-from-300k-wall-street-job-not-fulfilling-2024-9">quiet vacations</a> as much as possible.In 2022, I went to Portugal, London, Barcelona, Sydney, and Ibiza.<h2 id="10a85524-ce0f-442e-ab64-f6e38665d9c8">My mom is a public school teacher, and the school district where she worked was desperate for teachers</h2>After living on campus for a while, I wanted to move out of Berkeley because I disliked the university vibe. I knew nobody would know, and it was cheaper to live in Oklahoma.I decided to pick up another job <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ey-partner-quit-job-finance-math-teacher-2024-3">teaching math to 10th graders</a> where my mom works.I got the job as a public school teacher in 2022. I teach in person during the school year and travel during every school break. I take a big quiet vacation from the university during the summer.<h2 id="025933ca-847c-44be-bc47-fce6987cc6c6">I go on trips for professional development</h2> I give an hourlong talk as part of my research on digital nomadism. After these trips, I take a quiet vacation.At the end of 2022, I took an epic three-week trip to Antarctica. I used the majority of my leave from public school to go. Nobody at my university knew I was gone for that long.In 2023, I returned to the UK multiple times and spent the summer in Vienna, Barcelona, Portugal, Seville, and Paris. I went to Corfu for one week in October, and in December, I went to Cameroon for four weeks.I stay with my girlfriend in London and with family in Cameroon. I have another phone number that handles all of my business stuff. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/deals/best-vpn-deals">I use a VPN</a> that puts my location in San Francisco.I use Google Fi as my cellphone provider because it gives me WiFi tethering and up to 50 GB of data worldwide. I can easily run a connection anywhere I go.There were two instances where I thought I might be discovered. I had to have a colleague cover for me for one class I couldn't make, and another instance where I had to teach from a closet so no one knew where I was.<h2 id="458b6d8b-7b9f-4465-a9aa-69048bb65bda">I'm a mix of a backpacker and a luxury traveler</h2>I can afford the travel by working in university positions called readerships on campus. I get assignments, hold office hours, and get paid. I use the readership money to survive living in Oklahoma.I use my salary as a teacher to travel. After tax, I get $3,000 a month, which I combine with credit card points and miles.I also have a small boutique fragrance company called <a target="_blank" href="https://maisonjila.com/">Maison Jila</a>. The business makes me about $1,500 a month. "Retailers and brands are also getting better and better at how they package them, and it's a great way to showcase a lot of products in a smaller space," Carol Spieckerman, president of consulting firm <a href="https://spieckermanretail.com/">Spieckerman Retail</a>, told Insider.For shoppers looking to splurge, food brand Food52 boasts <a href="https://food52.com/shop/pantry/advent-calendars">Advent calendars</a> for popcorn, tea, and licorice, while fragrance company <a href="https://apothekeco.com/collections/advent-calendars/products/25-day-advent-calendar?variant=39443098566721">Apotheke</a> also sells two featuring a range of scents, candles, and soaps. There are also extravagant options like the £250 (about $333) calendar from Harrods featuring exclusive <a href="https://www.hellomagazine.com/healthandbeauty/skincare-and-fragrances/20210929122857/harrods-beauty-advent-calendar-2021/">beauty finds worth about £1,166</a> ($1,555), or even the $112,000 <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiffany-and-co-advent-calendar-2019-10">Tiffany's advent calendar</a> packed with expensive jewelry.Spieckerman said that Advent calendars allow retailers and brands to make a tidy profit by subtly encouraging shoppers to spend more."Retailers have known this forever, but bundled products blur comparisons," she said. "There might be a shopper here or there that attempts to do the math, but, by and large, these curated collections really defy direct comparisons."A search of the term "<keyword id="12319997" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="advent-calendar" source="Orion">Advent calendar</keyword>" on <a href="https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&amp;geo=US&amp;q=advent%20calendar">Google Trends</a> shows a slow but steady increase of searches every <keyword id="11906222" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="holiday" source="Orion">holiday</keyword> season since 2004. In 2019, inquiries about advent calendars topped Facebook Marketplace's search rankings, along with coffee cups, stocking holders, tree skirts, and ugly Christmas sweaters. <a href="https://nymag.com/strategist/article/best-advent-calendars.html">New York magazine</a> even published a shopping guide for the best Advent calendars on the market. Spieckerman told Insider that companies are "escalating in terms of the sheer breadth of categories that they're cramming into" the Advent calendar concept. But brands also view these products as a "real margin opportunity" that's essentially just a "packaging concept more than anything."Spieckerman said that these products don't cut into holiday sales, either, as they offer shoppers a festive experience to enjoy over the course of a month or so.As a result, more and more companies are adopting the packaging format. The Dollar Tea Club, a subscription-based tea outfit, is one brand that just introduced a new Advent calendar this year. Their calendars feature 12 to 24 of the year's most popular blends, holiday blends, and a few staff favorites. "In the past we've been focused on advertising our $1 teas and subscriptions, so this was us taking a chance with trying something new," Dollar Tea Club co-founder and CMO Allan Shulman told Insider. "We had concerns — the price point on this is higher than the average Dollar Tea Club purchase, so we decided to test it out. So far the response has been much greater than we expected and I've had to call our local print shop a few times this week for some last-minute printing."Advent calendars can also offer shoppers the opportunity to sample new products from a favorite company, according to Spieckerman. One of my colleagues Michael Goodman, a senior editor here at Insider, said that he recently purchased a jam and honey calendar from the French brand Bonne Maman."We buy their jams/jellies pretty frequently, so it was kind of perfect benevolent storm for holiday spirit — as well as getting to try some flavors they only make for the advent calendar. Win-win!" he said in a Slack message.Spieckerman said that one pitfall that could sour shoppers on Advent calendars is widespread "packaging fails," or disappointing products. <a href="https://www.insider.com/chanel-selling-expensive-beauty-advent-calendar-2021-10">Chanel this season sold an Advent calendar</a> that cost $825 and attracted <a href="https://www.insider.com/chanel-responds-advent-calendar-controversy-2021-12">online backlash</a> for its inclusion of cheap items like stickers and string bracelets. But for the time being, brands will likely continue to find these calendars a highly efficient holiday option."They're eye-catching, but they're also easy to merchandise," she said.

But it took more than a decade after he died for the country to celebrate him with a national holiday.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inspiring-martin-luther-king-jr-quotes-2017-1">Martin Luther King Jr. Day</a> is the second federal holiday of every calendar year (after New Year's Day). The holiday marks King's birthday, which was on January 15, 1929. Although <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/speeches-martin-luther-king-jr-2019-1">MLK Jr. Day</a> falls on King's actual birthday this year, that's not always the case.Instead, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/98th-congress/house-bill/3706/all-info">King Holiday Bill</a>, which sought to make his birthday a legal public holiday, designated the third Monday of every January as MLK Jr. Day.The bill was first introduced on April 8, 1968, four days after King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, <a target="_blank" href="https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/15-year-battle-martin-luther-king-jr-day">according to the National Museum of African American History &amp; Culture</a>. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/martin-luther-king-jr-final-hours-photos-2023-1">King was assassinated on April 4</a> of that year at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis.The King Holiday Bill was a bipartisan measure sponsored by Democratic Rep. Alabama and Mississippi also designate the third Monday in January to honor the Confederate general Robert E. Lee.As part of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, public schools and universities are closed, and it's a bank holiday. The USPS is also closed, and public libraries are generally closed. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nps.gov/subjects/npscelebrates/mlk-day.htm">National parks will be open</a> on the day and are offering free admission.King, former President George Washington, and Christopher Columbus are the only public figures with federal holidays recognizing them."To me, [King] is the outstanding international leader of the 20th century without ever holding office," Conyers said in 2015. "What he did — I doubt anyone else could have done."

How Martin Luther King Jr. Day became a federal holiday

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Chinese consumers are back from the festive Chinese New Year season next week.</li><li>That doesn't mean the economy will pick up.</li></ul>China's economy and markets were weak coming into 2024, but investor sentiment could worsen after the ongoing Chinese New Year break.This year marks China's second Chinese New Year after COVID-19 restrictions ended.The entire country is on a public holiday break until the end of the week, which has boosted consumption and travel. Authorities expect people in China to make a record 9 billion <a target="_blank" href="https://news.cgtn.com/news/2024-02-13/Consumption-and-travel-boom-in-Chinese-New-Year-holiday-1r9QtTlaJRm/">domestic passenger trips</a> over the festive season.While data on consumer spending for the season is not available yet, Chinese authorities are already hopeful for a boom, with the Chinese Ministry of Commerce branding 2024 the <a target="_blank" href="https://news.cgtn.com/news/2024-02-08/Spring-Festival-to-ignite-China-s-year-of-consumption-promotion-1r1FYj4VRzq/p.html">"Year of Consumption Promotion."</a>Analysts, however, are less optimistic.<h2>A gloomy economic outlook for spring</h2>Nomura analysts expect China's economy to worsen into the spring, as Beijing has not been able to revive the battered property sector.Consumer spending on services is also likely to taper off, they wrote in a note on Tuesday."Service consumption growth will likely slow sharply after the Chinese New Year holiday on fading pent-up demand and weakening consumer confidence," the economists wrote.Ongoing geopolitical tensions amid the US election season do not help the picture in China, the Nomura economists added.These challenges hang over <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-beijing-refuses-admit-broken-down-failing-structural-issues-2024-2">the world's second-largest economy</a> just as it needs to engineer a convincing recovery. China has been unable to sustain a growth spurt more than a year after lifting COVID-19 lockdowns, contributing to a <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/china-stock-market-meltdown-brutal-year-explainer-whats-happening-2024-1">collapse in investor confidence.</a>China needs to stop the drag on growth, Rich Lesser, the global chair of Boston Consulting Group, wrote in a note on Tuesday."The shrinking real estate sector and weak equity markets remain headwinds as they impair the confidence and spending power of households whose consumption is needed to drive growth," Lesser wrote.<h2>The markets aren't signaling positivity</h2>Hong Kong's stock market was the first to open for trade after the festive holiday — but the picture wasn't pretty against the backdrop of a decline in US stock markets overnight after a hotter-than-expected <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-cpi-consumer-price-index-january-housing-food-energy-prices-2024-2">January inflation reading</a> in the US.<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/hang-seng-china-enterprise">Hang Seng China Enterprises Index</a> fell as much as 2% before trading 1.1% higher at at 1:50 pm local time on Wednesday. The index is down 9% so far this year.Hong Kong's benchmark <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/hang_seng">Hang Seng Index</a> also fell as much as 2% before and was up 0.4%. The index is down 8.5% this year to date.The gains came after <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/china-markets-mainland-hong-kong-stocks-losses-economy-woes-2024-1">trillions of dollars lost</a> in the mainland and Hong Kong markets since they hit their peaks in 2021.Beijing is paying attention and trying to put a floor under losses.Authorities have <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-property-data-ugly-despite-support-stimulus-measures-crisis-2024-2">pulled more than a dozen moves</a><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-property-data-ugly-despite-support-stimulus-measures-crisis-2024-2"> since January to try to stabilize </a>the stock market rout and support downbeat property market demand amid its real-estate crisis.Even Chinese leader Xi Jinping was set to pay personal attention to the market slump, stoking traders' hopes of a forceful market rescue plan. After all, there were suggestions earlier that authorities are considering a <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-01-23/china-mulls-stock-market-rescue-package-backed-by-278-billion">stabilization fund</a><a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-01-23/china-mulls-stock-market-rescue-package-backed-by-278-billion"> to rescue the flailing</a> stock market.On February 7, Xi's administration replaced the country's top markets regulator. Analysts, however, are skeptical if the move will solve <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-markets-xi-jinping-fires-markets-regulator-control-reforms-2024-2">fundamental problems</a> in China's economy and markets.Mainland stock markets are closed this week for public holidays.

<ul><li>Over the years, there were growing calls by the Hindu community to declare <keyword id="188" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="diwali" source="Orion">Diwali</keyword> a school holiday. </li><li>Banks said <keyword id="6355838" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="new-york" source="Orion">New York</keyword> City is home to the whole world and children from all communities and backgrounds go to school here.</li><li>Consul General of India in New York Randhir Jaiswal thanked Adams for making Diwali a school public holiday.</li></ul> In a significant decision, Diwali will be a public school holiday in New York City starting 2023, with Mayor Eric Adams saying this sends a message about the significance of the city's inclusiveness and this "long overdue" step will encourage children to learn about the festival of lights. Adams, joined by New York Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar and New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks, said Thursday that in conversations on the campaign trail around how to run the state better, he "learned so much" about the Diwali holiday and what this festival means. He said that by declaring Diwali a holiday in New York City public schools, "we wanted to send a loud and clear message to the countless number of people who acknowledge this period of time of celebration. "At the same time, this is an educational moment because when we acknowledge Diwali, we are going to encourage children to learn about Diwali. We're going to have them start talking about what it is to celebrate the festival of lights, and how to turn the light on within yourself," he said. She said her legislation removes Anniversary Day, an "obscure and antiquated" day created in the 1800s so that it can be replaced with Diwali, "celebrated by a growing number of New Yorkers." "When this is done, the New York City Department of Education will be able to institute the Diwali holiday on the school calendar," she said, adding that she has brought this bill to the table so that all South Asian and Indo-Caribbean New Yorkers will have a seat at the table. According to New York State education laws, there must be a minimum of 180 days of school instruction. However, in order to meet this 180-day minimum requirement, no more holidays could be instituted in the school calendar. Rajkumar said that by removing the antiquated Anniversary Day school holiday that is observed by no one, her legislation makes the room for Diwali to be a school holiday while also meeting the 180-day minimum requirement for days of school instruction. Diwali to be public school holiday in New York City from 2023, Mayor says

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A copy of Prigozhin's calendar obtained by Die Welt and shared with Insider shows just how deeply enmeshed he was with the Putin regime.</li><li>It reveals Prigozhin had direct access to Putin's inner circle for nearly a decade. </li></ul>Vladimir Putin, the president of the Russian Federation, has some cleaning up to do.It's been less than two weeks since Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group mercenary organization, carried out an abortive mutiny, marching with a column of troops toward Moscow before making a deal to stand down. The operation, which Prigozhin called the "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wagner-boss-prigozhin-claims-his-forces-are-entering-russia-2023-6">march for justice</a>," was the largest direct challenge to Putin in his 23-year rule. While the immediate threat posed by Prigozhin appears to be over, Putin must now grapple with the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paranoia-grips-the-kremlin-over-who-colluded-with-prigozhin-2023-6">lurking threat</a> posed by Prigozhin's allies embedded across Russia's sprawling state security and military bureaucracy.One Russian general <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-general-knew-about-wagner-uprising-plan-bad-putin-nyt-2023-6">with close ties to Wagner</a> — Sergei Surovikin, the deputy commander of Russian forces fighting in Ukraine — has already disappeared from public view and is believed by some analysts to have been detained. An analysis of Prigozhin's secret calendar conducted by Insider suggests that if Putin intends to clean ranks of potential Wagner loyalists, he has his work cut out for him: Prigozhin regularly scheduled meetings or calls with Russia's ranking general and numerous top Putin deputies.Earlier this year, Insider (along with Die Welt, the Dossier Center, and Politico) obtained a cache of internal <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yevgeny-prigozhin-wagnerleaks-wagner-putin-hack-mexico-trolls-facebook-instagram-2023-2">Wagner Group files</a> from a group of anonymous hackers who called themselves Bogatyri, or "knights." One of the files is Prigozhin's personal calendar, showing 17,824 appointments over a span of nearly 10 years. The original file has a .dba extension, a format associated with Palm devices that has been obsolete for years in the West. The Dossier Center assisted with converting the file into a readable spreadsheet.Neither the Wagner Group's spokesperson nor Dmitry Peskov, Putin's press secretary, replied to emails requesting comment.While the calendar has gaps during the periods of Wagner's most notorious operations, including the 2014 Ukraine invasion and the 2020 US election, it offers an intimate account of Prigozhin's daily life, noting everything from appointments with his personal physician to scheduled times for taking dietary supplements. It is also a chronicle of Kremlin power, revealing just how deeply Prigozhin had integrated himself into Putin's circle, working as a de facto cabinet member for years as his Wagner troops became an indispensable tool of the Kremlin's efforts to extend Russian influence into Africa and the Middle East. Prigozhin's relationship with Putin <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-yevgeny-prigozhin-russian-tycoon-and-vladimir-putin-confidant-2022-10">began in St. Petersburg</a>, where Putin frequented New Island, one of Prigozhin's first restaurants. But while the two men have been photographed together several times, the calendar leaves the question of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prigozhin-tried-calling-putin-during-the-wagner-mutiny-in-russia-report-2023-6">Prigozhin's direct access</a> to the Russian president unanswered. Putin's name appears in Prigozhin's calendar only twice, and neither entry records a one-on-one meeting. The first entry is <a href="https://www.rand.org/blog/2015/11/is-winter-coming-or-our-russia-strategy.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a September 2015 event</a> at Russia's Donguz military base, which was also attended by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, the archrival that Prigozhin took up arms in late June to remove. The second is <a href="https://sputnikmediabank.com/media/5522129.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a TV press conference</a> Putin held at Gostiny Dvor, a vast Moscow shopping center, in June 2018. What's more explicit from the calendar is Prigozhin's direct access to Putin's inner circle. There are 75 entries for Ruslan Tsalikov, who has served as a deputy minister of defense since 2012. Anton Vaino, the chief of staff for Putin's executive office since 2016, had 73 scheduled appointments with Prigozhin. Another 36 appointments simply read "НГША," which stands for "chief of the general staff." This is almost certainly General Valery Gerasimov, who plotted Russia's initial 2014 invasion of Ukraine and now oversees the expanded war. Gerasimov, along with Shoigu, was repeatedly savaged by Prigozhin as corrupt and incompetent in the months before his armed coup.Thirty-three entries denote meetings or calls with Aleksey Dyumin, a former bodyguard of Putin's who is now the governor of the Tula region. Dyumin is among the close Putin allies who have fallen under suspicion over ties to Prigozhin since the rebellion. While Prigozhin was still on the march to Moscow, <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/russian-media-start-discussing-possible-095800480.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAAb3otyWOksq0nFl_Du0LV1yvR2oWbOOq779tuqY8K858eNhrYnIUPmsTkgvYQNgxidRAo7kCgIC1GVWQWLb-E2YoXgEbOn6ZSlLc9aW_shNaGuXNPlfZjdqFyWSY45n3dF2S_D_nOWw3zIYnFEr-GXunFDQjPUpLL144tZwvnP2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">there was speculation</a> among the Russian media that Dyumin might replace Shoigu as minister of defense, and he reportedly helped negotiate the deal where Prigozhin would lay down his arms and leave Russia for Belarus.<div type="image" title="Prigozhin on video" height="682" width="911" msid="101578149" hostid="261"></div>Working from the same trove of files, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/30/europe/russian-general-sergey-surovikin-wagner-vip-intl-hnk/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN reported</a> that Sergei Surovikin, the Russian general now under house arrest for his Wagner ties, was secretly a member of the group. He was assigned a Wagner VIP identification number — M-3744 — and an alias, Matveev Kimovich. But in the calendar, Prigozhin simply refers to him as Surovikin. His name appears 11 times for calls and meetings. Another 14 entries mention Dmitry Medvedev, who served as Russia's president between 2008 and 2012, although some of these entries refer to appointments with his assistants.The absence of any one-on-one meetings between Prigozhin and Putin could be explained by a small number of entries which include the word "Президент" or "president." One of these is a "Елка" or New Year's party. Another two have country names — Germany and Korea — along with the word "president." The country names could be code for specific locations, as Prigozhin and his operatives took some pains to cover his tracks. Wagner employees typically identify themselves and sign documents using three or four-digit employee numbers, and most Prigozhin's meetings with Wagner Group employees are presented this way. <div type="image" title="Spreadsheet showing some of Prigozhin's appointments." height="154" width="309" msid="101578151" hostid="261"></div>The trove of Prigozhin calendar entries ends in November 2021, with one final entry, likely scheduled in advance, for a "helicopter permit" in April 2022. It does not contain evidence of what Prigozhin was up to in the days before Putin launched an all-out assault on Ukraine that pulled in Wagner Group troops from operations in Africa and the Middle East. During the campaign, Prigozhin stepped out of obscurity to drive for victory, often obtained at a heavy cost as Wagner recruited convicts to bolster their ranks of fighters. By June, his time was running out.The ministry of defense that Prigozhin had railed in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wagner-boss-screams-swears-putins-war-chiefs-shoigu-gerasimov-2023-5">rants posted online</a> to his Telegram channel was now demanding that Wagner mercenaries sign official contracts with them by July 1. Prigozhin's power was now publicly subordinated to those like Shoigu, whom he had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wagner-boss-attacks-russia-defense-minister-family-says-stereotypical-elite-2023-5">come to loathe</a>. And the clout that he had wielded for years in the Kremlin appeared to have diminished. I wondered to myself whether a cheese advent calendar existed. Today, you can find beer and pork-scratching advent calendars, but chocolate dominated the market back then. So I did what anyone would do: I Googled it, realized one didn't exist, and popped myself to Hobbycraft so I could make my own.At that point, I had absolutely no intention to make cheese advent calendars into a business. I just wanted to write a blog post, which I published with instructions for people to make their own. The next day, I woke up and it had gone viral.
