Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> will dedicate to the nation 35 Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen Plants established under PM CARES, across 35 states and union territories on Thursday. <keyword id="6354642" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="modi" source="Orion">Modi</keyword> will dedicate these oxygen PSA plants in an event at <keyword id="6365231" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="all-india-institute-of-medical-sciences" source="Orion">All India Institute Of Medical Sciences</keyword> (AIIMS) in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. He will also address the gathering on the occasion. On the same day, he will complete 20 years of his service in public office since he took oath as Gujarat chief minister in 2001. All districts across the country will have now commissioned <keyword id="11154164" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="psa-oxygen-plants" source="Orion">PSA Oxygen Plants</keyword> with induction of these 35 PSA oxygen plants. A total of 1,224 PSA Oxygen Plants have been funded under the PM CARES across the country since the advent of Covid-19 pandemic. Out of that more than 1,100 plants have been commissioned, providing an output of over 1,750 MT oxygen per day. The project to commission a PSA oxygen plant in each district of the country was executed while dealing with complex challenges of hilly areas, islands and territories with difficult terrain. Around 7,000 personnel have been trained to monitor the operation and maintenance of these plants. These plants will be monitored with an embedded Internet of Things (IoT) device to check real time functioning and performance through a consolidated web portal. PM Modi to dedicate 35 PSA oxygen plants across 35 states and UTs on Thursday

The <keyword id="6362177" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-government">Union government</keyword> on Saturday decided to grant full exemption from Basic Customs Duty and health cess on import of <keyword id="6355647" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oxygen">oxygen</keyword> and oxygen related equipment for three months. The government also exempted basic customs duty on import of Covid <keyword id="79555" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vaccines">vaccines</keyword> with immediate effect for a period of three months. The decision came after Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> chaired a meeting to review steps taken to boost oxygen availability in the country. He emphasized that there was an immediate need to augment the supply of medical grade oxygen as well as equipment required for patient care both at home and in hospitals. The Prime Minister stressed that all ministries and departments need to work in synergy to increase availability of oxygen and medical supplies. The Prime Minister was briefed that basic customs duty was exempted on Remdesivir and its API recently. It was suggested that import of equipment related to providing oxygen to patients needs to be expedited. In order to augment their production and availability and to meet the rising demand, it was decided to grant full exemption from Basic Customs Duty and health cess on import of items related to Oxygen and Oxygen related equipment for a period of three months with immediate effect. Items exempted from basic customs duty and health cess are medical grade oxygen, oxygen concentrator along with flow meter, regulator, connectors and tubing, Vacuum Pressure Swing Absorption (VPSA) and Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA) oxygen plants, Cryogenic Oxygen Air Separation Units (ASUs) producing liquid/gaseous oxygen, Oxygen Canister, Oxygen Filling Systems, Oxygen Storage tanks, Oxygen cylinders including cryogenic cylinders and tanks, Oxygen Generators, ISO Containers for Shipping Oxygen, Cryogenic Road transport tanks for Oxygen. Parts of the above are to be used for the manufacture of equipment for production, transportation, distribution or storage of Oxygen, any other device from which Oxygen can be generated, <keyword id="3939429" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ventilators">Ventilators</keyword> (capable of functioning as high-flow devices) with nasal cannula; Compressors including all accessories and tubing; humidifiers and Viral filters, High flow nasal cannula device with all attachments, Helmets for use with non-invasive ventilation, Non-invasive ventilation oronasal masks for ICU ventilators, non-invasive ventilation nasal masks for ICU ventilators are also exempted from basic customs duty. The government said that apart from the above, it was also decided that basic customs duty on import of Covid vaccines be also exempted with immediate effect for a period of three months. "This will boost availability of these items as well as make them cheaper," the government said. The Prime Minister directed the Revenue Department to ensure seamless and quick custom clearance of such equipment. Accordingly, the Department of Revenue has nominated Joint Secretary, Customs, Gaurav Masaldan as the nodal officer for issues related to customs clearance for the above-mentioned items. The Union Government has taken a lot of measures in the last few days to improve supply of oxygen and medical supplies. IAF planes are bringing in cryogenic oxygen tanks from Singapore. The IAF is also transporting oxygen tanks in the country to reduce travel times. Similarly, in a major decision on Friday, free food grains will be given to 80 crore Indians for the month of May and June this year. Government to exempt basic customs duty on import of Covid vaccines, oxygen and oxygen-related equipment for three months

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) will provide free oxygen, power and water to a 100-bed make-shift COVID treatment centre, which was opened on Friday at its Kochi Refinery operated school, adjacent to its premises, in Ambalamugal, Kerala. BPCL supplies free oxygen, opens 100-bed make-shift COVID treatment centre at Kochi Refinery premises

Amid an increase in COVID-19 cases in the state, the <keyword id="13126" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="maharashtra" source="Orion">Maharashtra</keyword> government has activated 25 dedicated COVID-19 hospitals. Medical Education Minister <keyword id="866418" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="girish-mahajan" source="Orion">Girish Mahajan</keyword> made the announcement on Wednesday. "Amid rising cases, the state has activated 25 COVID-19 dedicated hospitals under the <keyword id="5681680" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="medical-education-and" source="Orion">Medical Education and</keyword> Research department. There are 5,000 beds for COVID-19 patients, more than 2,000 ventilators, 62 liquid medical oxygen and 37 PSA plants. Some 2,000 jumbo and 6,000 small oxygen cylinders have been kept ready by the department in case of emergency," he added. The hospitals conducted mock drills on April 10 and 11, the minister said. They can conduct 30,000 tests in a day if required, Mahajan said. "One of the useful measures for restricting COVID-19 spread is wearing a mask during duty hours. I have asked doctors, nurses and paramedical staff to use masks in hospitals," he said. Maharashtra on Tuesday recorded 949 new coronavirus cases, while six more patients succumbed to the infection. The state had recorded 505 cases and zero fatalities a day before. The 73-year-old man who died was found to be infected with the new variant, however, he was tested negative twice for the infection before. India is once again facing a spike in daily COVID-19 cases and Omicron strain is one of the reasons behind this surge. On January 5, the country reported 58,097 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, which is 6.3 times higher than 8 days ago. The positivity rate has also increased from 0.79% on December 29, 2021 to 5.03% on January 5, according to the data shared by the Union Health Ministry in a media briefing on Wednesday. The Omicron tally in the country has also climbed to 2,135 cases out of which 828 people have been recovered so far and 1,306 are active cases. Out of 24 states and union territories, which have detected Omicron cases, six states have more than 100 Omicron cases. According to the data by the Union Health Ministry, Maharashtra is the worst-hit state for Omicron with 653 cases, followed by Delhi with 464 cases, Kerala with 185 cases. Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope, earlier during the day, said, “We are not going to use the vocabulary of a ‘lockdown’ right now and there is no pressing need for it as well. A lockdown means totally shutting off all activities which we are not going to do. However, the challenge at the moment is to make sure that the restrictions already announced are implemented properly.” Whereas, Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, yesterday, announced weekend curfew this week starting from 10 p.m., Friday to 5 a.m., Monday in order to bring down the number of COVID-19 cases in the state. Keeping in mind the resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the country, the Union Health Ministry advised all the states to strengthen surveillance, containment activities, implement home isolation and to focus on infrastructure augmentation. How states can strengthen their infrastructure, as suggested by the Health Ministry — <ol><li>States to create enough isolation facilities in hostels/hotels linked with hospitals. </li><li>Strengthen the existing health infrastructure dedicated to COVID-19 roping in the private sector. </li><li>To increase the number of beds, states can create or make shift hospitals. </li><li>States should also focus on rural and paediatric infrastructure. </li><li>Should make sure proper functioning of Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) plants, ventilators, and rational use of oxygen. </li><li>Review the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, N-95 masks and buffer stock of COVID-19 related drugs and medicines. </li><li>States should also ensure the capacity building of health care staff. </li></ol>How states can strengthen their surveillance, and implement home isolation, as suggested by the Health Ministry — <ol><li>States should focus on containment zones by imposing restrictions to curb the spread of the infection. </li><li>Revive the surveillance teams for contact tracing and containment. </li><li>States should focus more on home isolation and ensure its effective implementation by district level teams. </li><li>Can use tele-consultation for monitoring the infected patients. </li><li>Revive the district/sub-district/ward level control rooms and publicise their contact numbers and details.</li></ol> To boost the immunity of the people amid this Omicron wave, the Government has also announced the third dose of COVID-19 vaccine termed as ‘Precautionary dose’ for all healthcare workers and people aged above 60 years, the vaccination programme will kick start on January 10. The third dose will be the same dose which was previously inoculated as the first and second dose.
