<p>Sony's PlayStation 4 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/playstation-4-ps4-xbox-one-sales-2017-6">continues to dominate</a> Microsoft's Xbox One and Nintendo's Switch. As of June 30, the PlayStation 4 reached 63.3 million consoles sold. Though Microsoft no longer reports sales numbers for its Xbox One console, the best estimates put the Xbox One somewhere in the realm of 30 million units sold.</p><p>In just Sony's last financial quarter, from April 1 to June 30, the company sold 3.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles. Doesn't sound like a lot? Nintendo's Switch, by comparison, has sold a total of 4.7 million units in its lifespan - from March 1 to June 30. Nintendo estimates it'll sell around 10 million Switch consoles in its first year, while Sony's expecting to move a whopping <em>18 million</em> PlayStation 4 consoles in the same amount of time.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/593ff485c4adee7a278b4cad-1440/screen shot 2017-06-13 at 71700 am.png" alt="God of War (2018)" data-mce-source="Sony" /><p class="source"><span>Sony</span></p><p class="caption">2018's "God of War" looks incredible.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The continued success of the PlayStation 4 is due to several different factors:</p><ol><li>The PlayStation 4 was the less expensive console when it launched in 2013, coming in at $100 less than Microsoft's Xbox One.</li><li>The PlayStation 4 is an attractive box that easily fits into your home, and using it as more than a game console is a snap.</li><li>A lineup of killer blockbuster games, from "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" to "Horizon Zero Dawn" to "Bloodborne," made the PlayStation 4 a must-have console. All three of those games are only playable on PS4.</li><li>Success begets success - the PlayStation 4 has overtaken the zeitgeist as "the" game console to own if you're going to buy a game console.</li></ol><p>Though Sony's exclusive game lineup isn't full of bangers in the back half of 2017, an impressive array of major exclusives are currently in the works. And if you're looking for a way to enjoy more 4K content on your new 4K TV, the PlayStation 4 Pro offers an upgrade path to even prettier games. Sony's PlayStation 4 continues to dominate as the world's most popular game console

<p>Sony's PlayStation 4 console isn't <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sony-playstation-4-best-selling-video-game-consoles-chart-2016-12">the most popular console ever</a>, but it's getting there. The PlayStation 4 is just shy of reaching 60 million consoles sold - an impressive number to crest in just 3.5 years. </p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57d0728f09d293ce178b6710-1500/ps4pro1.jpg" alt="PlayStation 4 Pro" /><p class="source"><span>Ben Gilbert / Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The PlayStation 4 Slim (background) and PlayStation 4 Pro (foreground) make up the PlayStation 4 family of consoles.</p><p>That announcement puts Sony's PlayStation 4 ahead of Microsoft's Xbox One by a considerable margin: the PlayStation 4 is selling approximately twice as fast as the Xbox One. </p><p>Though Microsoft stopped reporting sales numbers of its Xbox One console, numbers provided by SuperData Research indicate that Microsoft has sold approximately 26 million Xbox One consoles (as of January 2017). That puts Sony in a dramatic lead over Microsoft when it comes to game console sales, and casts the long-running competition between the two console makers in a very different light. </p><p>Put simply: Sony has a ridiculous lead over Microsoft when it comes to the video game business.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57d842dcb0ef97f0288b51ea-1500/gettyimages-477358798.jpg" alt="Xbox vs Playstation" /><p class="source"><span>Christian Petersen/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Sony and Microsoft have a long-running competition with each other in the video game business.</p><p>There are a few reasons for this lead, from major game exclusives ("Horizon Zero Dawn") to new models of the PlayStation 4 (the PlayStation 4 Pro is a slightly more powerful version of the original PS4, which launched in late 2016) to an excellent loyalty program (PlayStation Plus). </p><p>And all of that stuff matters, no doubt, but what may matter even more was Microsoft's major missteps back in 2013 - the year that both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 debuted and then launched. Right out of the gate, Microsoft turned off potential buyers with a higher price point ($499 for Xbox One compared to $399 for PlayStation 4), and a major messaging problem.</p><p>To Microsoft, the Xbox One was intended as the center hub of your home entertainment system. To Sony, the PlayStation 4 was intended as the best game console ever made.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5728ee25dd0895721b8b46b6-2048/screen shot 2016-05-03 at 111115 am.png" alt="Xbox One" /><p class="source"><span>YouTube/Xbox</span></p><p>That subtle difference in messaging - combined with a $100 price difference - hurt the Xbox One in a major way early on, and in many ways doomed the console to years of second place. 'First, best, and must': PlayStation boss Shawn Layden shares the secret recipe behind Sony's global gaming empire

Sorry, Nintendo. As we go into next week's E3 conference, the biggest video game event of the year, Sony wants you to know that the PlayStation 4 is the one to beat.<p>Today, Sony announces that it's sold "almost" 60 million PlayStation 4 consoles to customers since its launch in 2013.</p><p>To underscore the point, it revealed a few new stats, too:</p><ul><li>Sony has sold 1 million <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sony-playstation-vr-review-2016-10">PlayStation VR headsets </a>since its launch in October 2016.</li><li>One in five PlayStation 4 consoles sold since November have been the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/playstation-4-pro-review-2016-11">new, souped-up "Pro" model</a>.</li><li>"<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/horizon-zero-dawn-review-2017-2">Horizon Zero Dawn</a>," the flagship PlayStation 4 exclusive, has sold 3.4 million copies.</li></ul><p>Microsoft no longer reveals sales of the Xbox One, but <a href="https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-one-sales-reach-26-million-report/1100-6447023/">recent estimates peg it at below 30 million</a> sold. And while the Nintendo Switch, which launched in March, is too new to compare, Nintendo had sold around 14 million Wii U consoles since 2012.</p><p>In other words, Sony is taking a victory lap ahead of E3, and taking its fans along, too: From June 9-17, Sony will be holding a "Days of Play" promotion, with big sales on PlayStation software and hardware. Sony is even using the event to launch a gold-colored PlayStation 4 console, which will sell for $249.</p><p>Business Insider sat down with PlayStation global sales and marketing head Jim Ryan and Sony Interactive Entertainment America CEO Shawn Layden to talk about Sony's blockbuster 2016, the revitalized competition with Microsoft and Nintendo, and the master plan for the year ahead.</p><h2>'That's the way we like to do things'</h2><p>Sony had a very busy fourth quarter last year. On October 13, 2016, Sony launched PlayStation VR, a $399 headset that attaches to the PlayStation 4 console - its play to beat Facebook's Oculus to conquer virtual reality in the living room.</p><p>One month earlier, on September 7, Sony introduced the PlayStation 4 Slim, a refined version of the original console, and the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/playstation-4-pro-review-2016-11">PlayStation 4 Pro</a>, a version with more robust graphical capabilities.</p><p>"That's the way we like to do things," jokes Layden.</p><p>Now, almost eight months after that hardware blitz, Ryan says "it could have scarcely gone better" - an assertion backed up by those sales figures. He also says high demand has led to shortages of the PlayStation VR and the PS4 Pro console. But Sony has ramped up production, and he expects they'll be easier to find going forward.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57f43b989bd978e7018b4bdd-1920/20120501222725mts00054206still001.png" alt="playstation vr motion controllers move" /><p class="source"><span>Darren Weaver/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The Sony PlayStation VR, a virtual reality headset that works with any PlayStation 4 console.</p><p>The PlayStation 4 Pro has found early success for a very simple reason, says Layden: There's a "constant desire of every developer to make their games look better." The console games with the most impressive graphics are landing on the Pro, he says, and gamers are coming along for the ride.</p><p>And when it comes to virtual reality, Ryan says the company is "intrigued" by where it stands with the PlayStation VR, even as he acknowledges that one million headsets sold is hardly a dent in the PlayStation 4's 60 million-strong customer base.</p><p>"We would not describe one million units the same as mass adoption," says Ryan. "But we would call it a good start." </p><h2>'We won't be frightened of what they do'</h2><p>Sony may be way out front, but Nintendo and Microsoft have both indicated a revitalized willingness to compete. </p><p>Ryan says it's too early to really gauge the Nintendo Switch's success, but that "there's room in the market." When it comes to Microsoft, however, Ryan is a little more skeptical.</p><p>Xbox boss Phil Spencer has promised that its forthcoming "Project Scorpio," slated to launch this holiday season, will be "the most powerful console ever." So while Sony welcomes the competition and looks forward to hearing more about Project Scorpio at E3 with the rest of the world, it's not exactly keeping the PlayStation team up at night.</p><p>"We won't be frightened of what they do," says Ryan.</p><p>Because ultimately, it's all about the games, and Ryan thinks Sony has the edge. The "vast majority" of Xbox One games are also available for PlayStation 4, notes Ryan - and PlayStation 4-exclusive blockbusters like "Horizon Zero Dawn" and the forthcoming "Uncharted: The Lost Legacy" tip the scales. </p><h2>What comes next</h2><p>In a broad sense, Layden says the way for PlayStation to grow is by expanding the traditional notion of the video game industry. As the leading console maker, Layden says the next real frontier for PlayStation lies in enticing people who might never otherwise play games.</p><p>"We have to also create new segments, new genres," says Layden.</p><p>An early example of this can be found with "MLB: The Show 17," the latest in Sony's baseball series, explains Layden. Originally, Sony's inclination was to market it "as a game," he says. Since virtual reality is so new, there's no accepted way of doing things. That means there's a real chance to reexamine what works and what doesn't, opening the door for new innovations that can encourage new players.</p><p>"[PlayStation VR is] not a peripheral, so to speak; it's a whole new medium," says Layden.</p><p>The goal for Sony, then, is to push on both software and hardware: With excellent exclusive games, Layden says, Sony can drive the market forward by showing developers what's possible. Sony's PlayStation 4 is crushing Nintendo and Microsoft - now execs explain the master plan

You'll be able to use Apple's TV service on your Apple devices, including Apple TV or your iPhone. </p><p>A Baird Equity Research note released Wednesday suggests Apple <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-tv-subscription-service-2015-3">could </a><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-tv-subscription-service-2015-3">generate $4 billion in annual service revenue</a> from the launch of its own TV subscription service.</span></p><p>This seems like a play to millennials, who now watch <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">40 minutes less of traditional TV than two years ago, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-tv-subscription-service-2015-3">according to BI Intelligence</a>. <a href="http://time.com/3713134/millennials-tv-cord-cutting-cable/">It's been</a> <a href="http://mashable.com/2015/03/02/millennial-cord-cutter/">widely reported</a> that <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/dorothypomerantz/2015/03/17/will-an-apple-web-tv-service-be-the-cord-cutting-tipping-point/">millennials are cord-cutting</a> - eschewing traditional cable packages in favor of Netflix, Hulu, HBO GO, and other streaming services. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We spoke with about two-dozen millennial cord-cutters, ages 19 to 27, to see why they ditched cable, what they use now to watch TV shows and movies, and whether they'd buy into Apple's new TV service. Some of them are students. Some are employed. Others are unemployed and job hunting. None of them said outright they'd use Apple's new reported TV subscription service.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Their answers are insightful and surprising. </span></p><h3><span style="font-size: 1.17em; color: #000000;">Why don't you pay for cable?</span></h3><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I can pretty much stream or download everything I want to so I</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">don't feel the need to spend an extra 60 bucks a month on cable.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">At first I didn't pay for cable because it was just too expensive to be worth it, then as I had more money it just seemed less and less worth it since I had gone so long without it anyway.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I don't pay for cable because I don't watch enough TV to make it worth the price. I feel like I get everything I need for the most part from network TV and Netflix - and all I had to do was buy a $20 antenna one time. All the New Girl and Jeopardy I could ever need!</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I don't believe in paying for cable in college because 1) there's PrimeWire [a website that lets users stream pirated shows and movies] and 2) there are streaming services. Managing these things is easier than dealing with the crooks at the cable company and these services usually tend to be more customer-friendly in the long run. It's like a rent-controlled apartment.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I don't pay for cable because as of right now, I don't see it as a necessary expense (a.k.a., I can't really afford it.) Also, since most programming is available online the day after its TV broadcast, I choose to wait a day and watch it for free online rather than on cable.</span></li></ul><h3><span>What do you use to stream/watch TV instead, if anything?</span></h3><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I typically stream from Netflix, Hulu Plus and HBO GO. I either pay for or share these accounts with my family so it doesn't cost me very much money a month.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I do a combination of Netflix, Hulu, and pirated streaming to fill my TV needs.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Right now I have a Roku which I use Amazon Prime or Netflix on. If I can't watch on there, I either download it on my laptop or PS3.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I do use Hulu sometimes, but again I mostly watch Network TV so things like Jane The Virgin and Scandal are available, I just have to wait a week. That used to bother me in college but now that I'm too busy to be anything other than a casual TV watcher I just stay clear of spoilers and I've found that I don't mind. My boyfriend's parents also have HBO so we use their HBO Go account for things like Game of Thrones and binge watching old shows. Not gonna lie, we've downloaded a few things - we were obsessed with The Affair and would find that online every single week, but only because we didn't have another way to access it. Like, when it comes to movies, if it's available on iTunes we pay for it even though we could probably download it for free easily. We only download things if there's no way we could pay to watch it.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I usually stream TV shows on Hulu or Netflix, but if the show is available through the network's website, I'll watch it there, most likely. (Daily Show, SNL, etc.)</span></li></ul><h3 dir="ltr"><span>How long have you gone without cable?</span></h3><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I haven't had cable for almost five years now, ever since I went to college. When I moved recently and set up my internet I was considering paying for cable, but my bill would have been double so my roommate and I decided it wasn't worth it.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I have never paid for cable services myself, so I guess the last time I technically "had" cable was when I lived with my parents... So I guess it's been like 7 years since I had cable</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I haven't had cable in 5 or 6 years.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I didn't have cable growing up so I've honestly never really had it. My parents got it after I moved out of the house so when I would go home for vacations and stuff I had it but I never had it for a long enough period of time to get attached. But my boyfriend always had cable and he watches TV even less than I do - he couldn't care less that we don't have it now.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I only had cable for one year back in 2008 when I lived with my sister and she really wanted to have it and splitting the cost wasn't so bad. I got laid off during the recession so it came in handy, I had all the time in the world. Streaming things on Netflix works just fine for me. I'm not concerned with staying current on Game of Thrones or the Walking Dead or anything like that. Between working full time and being a full time graduate student I don't think the costs are worth it.</span></li></ul><h3 dir="ltr"><span>Can you see yourself paying for cable again in the future?</span></h3><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Honestly, except for live events like awards shows and sports, I don't miss having cable. I can usually watch something an hour after it aired (by torrenting)...but I would probably consider buying that service, especially if I split the cost with my roommate.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I will probably never get a traditional cable subscription because I only follow maybe a handful of shows at a time, and I'm not interested in all the sports/news/etc packages that everyone offers.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I don't miss live TV, and all the shows that I like are on one of the services I use. I don't think I would pay for cable again, unless the rates were drastically reduced.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Even when I think about further down the line with having kids, I don't foresee plopping them down in front of a cable-ready TV.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I'm not sure if I'd pay for cable again, but it seems silly to pay for it when other options (which are currently more affordable) are available.</span></li></ul><h3 dir="ltr"><strong>Apple <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apples-going-to-launch-a-tv-service-this-fall-that-could-kill-cable-2015-3">is reportedly launching a web TV service this fall</a>. For $20 to $40 a month, Apple will let you stream live TV to all your Apple gadgets - your iPad, your Apple TV, your iPhone, etc. </strong><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">You'll have access to a bundle of about 25 networks, including Disney, ABC, ESPN, CBS, and Fox. Would you be interested in Apple's new TV service? Why or why not?</strong></h3><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I don't use Apple devices, so I don't think this would affect me. Apple needs to remember it's going after only a portion of the market.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I'd probably consider the Apple TV thing if it's ad-free and would have all the channels my shows are one. If it's like, just the basic stuff like the Big 4 plus sports, news, and family, I probably won't go for it. I'd be more likely to pay $20-$30 per month for Hulu minus ads, to be honest.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I'm not sure I would pay for the Apple service since it looks like a lot of network channels and you don't have to pay for those to begin with, which apparently a lot of people don't know (my boyfriend kept telling me I was wrong, he didn't believe me until we hooked the antenna up and actually had signal) so it doesn't sound like there would be a WHOLE lot of extra channels for the money. For me, there's kind of a big gap between the amount of content that you can get for free and the type of content that you have to pay for that I would actually want. There is SO much in between those two levels - like Disney and Discovery and ESPN - that I just have no interest in. Which I guess takes me to: I would absolutely pay $20 or $30 a month if it would give me the ability to watch things like HBO, Showtime, AMC, BBC America...that price tag is just not worth it to me if it isn't giving me specifically what I want.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Apple TV sounds like a very reasonable option for people who can't entirely cut the cord from current cable programming but are looking to lower their costs, but it's just not for me. </span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Nope, I don't think I'd do it. Unless they somehow acquire HBO and give me access to Game of Thrones for that price (along with the smaller channels). Even then though, it's still so easy to watch what you want without paying for it that spending money on live TV is slowly becoming more and more obsolete.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">With regard to Apple's service, I still don't know if it's worth the cost. I'm usually not around to watch live TV anyway, which is one of the reasons I watch everything the day after on other streaming websites.
