That might distance her from her child and render her brutish or numb or reduce her to rage or despair, or prompt her to commit violent, destructive acts of her own.This was so clear in me, and yet I had never heard of such phenomena.<h2>My sexual assault made me more likely to have postpartum depression</h2>I learned, from my therapist, Grace, as I pieced birth memories back together, that mothers — or birth partners — who dissociate during labour or birth — as I had done — are more likely to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/became-mom-at-15-served-army-for-over-20-years-2023-6">develop PTSD</a> postnatally than those who do not.This is why, she said, it is so important for midwives and obstetricians to have additional training in trauma, so that they can help identify when a birthing mother or birth partner may have entered a dissociative state. Once a mother has dissociated, she may struggle to connect with her babies during her birth experience and may also struggle to remember what happened during the episode of dissociation.Sitting on the floor of her therapy room, shaking a rattle at the babies, Grace told me that my particular profile, my case history of sexual assault and sexual harassment, made me susceptible to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/parenting/how-long-does-postpartum-depression-last">postnatal depression</a> and post-traumatic stress disorder. She explained that the violence inflicted on my womb, in birth, echoed past violence inflicted on the same regions.That my body, recognizing this echo, had set about to remind me: This world is a dangerous place.<h2>PTSD for mothers is clinically predictable</h2>She said also that the violent recollection of rape in birth was not an unusual experience in survivors, that, on the contrary, the phenomenon of postnatal depression and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/ptsd-symptoms-in-women">post-traumatic stress disorder in women</a> who had previously experienced trauma had been studied.That the acute numbness caused by the combination of birth trauma and the intrusion of other, associated memories into the fabric of my newfound motherhood was not unusual. It was clinically predictable.I would tell Grace, the next time I saw her, that increasingly I believed that a woman's reproductive history could not be separated from the weight of the history that she carried. That mothers were not born. They were made. And they could be unmade. And that between the making and the unmaking every day was a struggle for self-definition.<h2>Naming and defining our trauma help make us stronger</h2>After therapy, I laid a blanket out, beneath the auburn trees, and helped the boys with tummy time. They played awhile, kicking their legs, pushing up on chubby forearms. Shifting their weight backwards and forwards, teaching themselves to crawl. Look at the bugs, the bugs in the grass. Look at the dry leaves. Look at the spiked green envelopes of fresh chestnuts.They reached out for these things, hitching themselves forward, they tugged and clutched at the earth, pulling fistfuls towards their mouths. I cleaned their fingers, tutting. I tickled their feet, their cherubim folds. They laughed raucous baby belly laughs, hiccupping little crescendos of song.I found them so beautiful. "Hello," I said. "Hello." They cooed and giggled and fidgeted and stopped, suddenly, transfixed again by something new, lying on their backs, staring. I mirrored them, laying down on the earth, curling my body around theirs, holding their little mud-stained fingers. "Look," I said, pointing. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy helped in organizing the event.Mays told Bloomberg she was most concerned about AI's bias towards race, saying that the model endorsed hateful and discriminatory speech after being asked to consider the First Amendment from the viewpoint of a member of the Ku Klux Klan.An OpenAI spokesperson <a href="https://venturebeat.com/ai/legions-of-defcon-hackers-will-attack-generative-ai-models/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told VentureBeat on Thursday</a> that "red-teaming," or challenging one's systems through an adversarial approach, was critical for the company as it allows for "valuable feedback that can make our models stronger and safer" and "different perspectives and more voices to help guide the development of AI."These errors aren't a one-off concern. For instance, Amazon shut down its AI recruitment tool as it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-ai-biased-against-women-no-surprise-sandra-wachter-2018-10">discriminated against female applicants</a>, Insider reported in 2018. The tech giant's Project Zero team said it had alerted the chip designer ARM about the GPU bug, and the British chip designer had fixed those vulnerabilities. However, smartphone manufacturers including <keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword>, <keyword id="874458" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="xiaomi" source="Orion">Xiaomi</keyword>, Oppo and Google "hadn't deployed patches to fix the vulnerabilities as of earlier this week", claimed the Project Zero team. "The vulnerabilities discussed are fixed by the upstream vendor, but at the time of publication, these fixes have not yet made it downstream to affected Android devices (including <keyword id="576817" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pixel" source="Orion">Pixel</keyword>, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo and others). Devices with a <keyword id="2921663" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mali-gpu" source="Orion">Mali GPU</keyword> are currently vulnerable," said Ian Beer of Project Zero Google researchers reported five issues to ARM when they were discovered between June and July 2022. ARM fixed the issues promptly in July and August 2022, disclosing them as security issues on their Arm Mali Driver Vulnerabilities page (CVE-2022-36449) and publishing the patched driver source on their public developer website. However, Google "discovered that all of our test devices which used Mali GPU are still vulnerable to these issues. CVE-2022-36449 is not mentioned in any downstream security bulletins". The researchers said users are recommended to patch as quickly as they can once a release containing security updates is available, so the same applies to vendors and companies. "Companies need to remain vigilant, follow upstream sources closely, and do their best to provide complete patches to users as soon as possible," the tech giant added. According to <keyword id="2180054" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sammobile" source="Orion">SamMobile</keyword>, Samsung's Galaxy S22 series devices and the company's Snapdragon-powered handsets aren't affected by these bugs. Millions of Android devices prone to hacking due to GPU bug: Google

One customer shared a photo on Twitter over the weekend that showed a <a href="https://twitter.com/ericwdolan/status/1677744879538163712?s=20">large wet patch</a> on his Eight Sleep mattress, which is temperature-controlled using water. Other customers were then quick to chime in and share similar experiences with their own Eight Sleep products, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-07-13/silicon-valley-s-favorite-mattress-had-a-bet-wedding-problem?srnd=technology-vp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bloomberg reported</a>. These tweets have prompted <a href="https://twitter.com/VCBrags/status/1677877361285513217?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">jokes online about wetting the bed</a> and blaming the mattress. The company's "Pod 2" mattress typically retails for about $2,995, while its newer "Pod 3" model is listed on its site for $3,395.These mattresses are designed to help calibrate sleep through features that "dynamically heat and cool" the bed, as well as offering a "thermal alarm" that can help wake up the user, according to the company's website. Each mattress comprises multiple layers, and its temperature control comes from "hydropowered technology," it says online. A device called the "Hub" is placed next to the bed and supplies water to help regulate the temperature. A representative for Eight Sleep did not confirm that this is the cause of the leaks. These mattresses have also drawn endorsements online from the likes of <a href="https://fortune.com/well/2023/07/07/mark-zuckerberg-sleep-routine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mark Zuckerberg</a> and The New York Times journalist <a href="https://twitter.com/andrewrsorkin/status/1630634060115525653?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andrew Ross Sorkin</a>.A representative for Eight Sleep told Insider that the company sends out warranty replacements immediately when customers report leaks and takes such complaints, "extremely seriously." Higher housing costs have <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article269954162.html">turned off</a> many would-be buyers, encouraging some to settle in different states."You just can't afford the mortgage, it's not going to appraise for the price that you want and the flood insurance is going to be disastrously high," Kelman said, "We just can't figure out a way to socialize all these risks for regular homebuyers."<h2>Investors swoop in on Florida's housing market </h2>While regular homebuyers with financing may have trouble getting approved for a loan or get insurance on a house that has major structural issues or is located in a flood zone, cash buyers are able to cut through any red tape and hurdles by simply purchasing a property outright. Investors can also finance purchases of risky homes through the use of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/real-estate-investors-share-how-to-start-without-much-cash-2022-9">hard money loans</a>, or private loans from other investors, typically with a higher interest rate. Investors have been busy in Florida throughout the pandemic, and in more recent months. Data on the number of cash sales — a way to gauge the extent to which investors are participating in the market — from Florida Realtors <a href="https://www.floridarealtors.org/sites/default/files/2022-12/November-2022-Fla-single-family-data-detail.pdf">shows</a> that in September, the same month that Hurricane Ian hit, the state saw 5,980 cash purchases. These cash deals represented nearly 30% of all closed sales in the state that month, the data indicates.Kelman says that in September, during the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, Redfin's Florida offices received two types of calls from clients: Homeowners who wanted to sell their properties but felt like they no longer had the option and investors who were eager to secure a deal on the homes that remained standing. "Regular residents of Florida were calling us almost in tears because they were standing on their second floor balcony and up to their knees in water and wished they had sold earlier," he said.On the opposite line were either institutional or retail investors — a nonprofessional investor without the backing of hedge funds — who Kelman says maybe had "an extra $700,000" and saw the hurricane as "an investment opportunity.""It was a surreal experience," he said. "I visited the Tampa Bay area right after Hurricane Ian hit just to check on the welfare of our own employees. They just had so many stories of investors calling while the hurricane was making landfall."
