Project Tailwind: Here’s how Google's AI-powered note-taking tool works

The last 9-10 years have seen tremendous growth across four major consumer <keyword id="6380512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electronics" source="Orion">electronics</keyword> segments -- <keyword id="38260" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-phones" source="Orion">mobile phones</keyword>, consumer electronics, <keyword id="189485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="it-hardware" source="Orion">IT hardware</keyword> and electronic components -- that account for over 70 per cent of India's domestic manufacturing profile. The pace is such that tech giants are now lining up investments worth billions of dollars in the country. The country is rapidly becoming an electronics manufacturing hub, with the sector expected to rise to $300 billion by 2025-26. From <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> to Foxconn and US-based Micron Technologies to domestic major Tata Group, the companies are aiming to leverage domestic capabilities to achieve supply chain diversification and scale up production by manufacturing in the country. Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn has received approval to invest at least $1 billion more in a plant in India that will manufacture Apple products. The fresh investment is on top of the $1.6 billion it earlier set aside for the 300-acre site close to the Bengaluru airport. Meanwhile, the Tata Group is planning to build one of India's largest iPhone assembly plants in Tamil Nadu's Hosur. According to media reports, the facility is expected to feature around 20 assembly lines and employ 50,000 workers within two years. The site is expected to be operational within 12 to 18 months. With Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Wistron selling its India operations to the Tata Group for $125 million, Tata Electronics is going to become the first Indian company to manufacture new Apple iPhones in the country, which is a major fillip to the government's 'Make in India' initiative. According to reports, Apple plans to expand its investment in the country to approximately $40 billion over the next four to five years. Apple has already crossed the $7 billion production milestone during the previous fiscal year. Apple is aiming to manufacture more than 50 million iPhones in India per year, as it aims to shift some of the production out from China. The tech giant aims to achieve the target within the next two to three years, with additional tens of millions of units planned after that, according to the Wall Street Journal. According to government and industry data, India saw mobile phones exports worth $5.5 billion (over Rs 45,000 crore) in the April-August period in the ongoing fiscal year (FY24). As per estimates by the Department of Commerce and the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), accessed by IANS, the April-August period saw mobile phone exports worth $5.5 billion, against $3 billion (about Rs 25,000 crore) in the same period in FY22-23. India is set to cross Rs 1,20,000 crore in mobile phone exports in the current fiscal year. The country is now the second-biggest manufacturing hub for mobile phones due to heavy investment from original equipment manufacturers, original design manufacturers and companies dealing in components and parts. India is expected to export about 22 per cent of its total assembled mobile phones in 2023, according to Counterpoint Research. However, "China's manufacturing and supply chain will still maintain its essential role in the longer run," says senior research analyst Ivan Lam. According to Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR, India's domestic consumer electronics manufacturing sector has soared, propelled by a mix of strong tailwinds. "A conducive policy environment is attracting strong investments, while a burgeoning R&amp;D pool in areas like chip design and AI is fostering innovation. Domestic champions are leading the charge, prioritizing IP-driven value creation and localisation," Ram told IANS. India's electronics sector is set to harness $7 billion untapped revenue by 2035 via circular business model and policy pathways, say industry stakeholders. Current commitments and targets set the projected market size for these circular models at $13 billion in 2035. Yet, the total addressable market, achievable through the right public and private actions, can reach an astounding $20 billion, revealing an untapped potential of 35 per cent, according to the ICEA. Three core business models -- Repair, Resell, and Recycling -- are already thriving in India, predominantly driven by the informal sector. Around 90 per cent of collection and 70 per cent of recycling are handled by this competitive sector. However, only 22 per cent of the collected e-waste is managed by the formal sector, revealing room for improvement. Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA, highlighted the future potential of India's electronics sector as a global manufacturing hub. "I am confident that the electronics industry would facilitate sustainable circular economy practices to ensure a sustainable green future for the generations to come," Mohindroo said. Meanwhile, the ICEA is also setting up a task-force to ensure that the current electronics trade between India and the US goes up from an estimated $8 billion to $100 billion in a decade. "This plant sets a major milestone for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making India a semiconductor hub - the way the country has achieved in sectors like mobile, electronics, defense, railways, aviation and multiple other areas where progress is visible," Union IT MInister Ashwini Vaishnaw had told IANS. The engineering major Larsen &amp; Toubro (L&amp;T) has also announced to invest up to Rs 830 crore to build a fabless semiconductor chip design subsidiary which will ramp up the country's plan to become a semiconductor hub. In just 15-16 months' time, India has seen the construction of its first-ever semiconductor plant in Gujarat, received more manufacturing proposals along with several chip-designing startups now operational in the country. "This momentum is expected to continue in 2024, with India poised to become a major hub for consumer electronics manufacturing and a formidable export powerhouse," said Ram.

He added that "you're not going to see outlandish ads on Amazon."That's because Amazon's ads are closely tied to its e-commerce platform, and unlike Facebook or <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/goog-stock">Google</a>, Amazon sends users directly to the advertisers website for shopping. This, Thill said, is a "really unique advantage" for Amazon.On Facebook and Google, users "don't have as seamless an ability to transact on the e-commerce side," Thill added. But on Amazon, "You always have the 'buy' button on the same page as the ad," he emphasized. Plus, this advantage for Amazon "will not be muddied by overhang of what's going on on some of the social platforms" he said.Amazon's digital advertising market share is indeed increasing, going from 0.5% of the global market in 2016, to 2% in 2017, according to data from eMarketer. Thill thinks that trend will continue as a result of Amazon's advantage. He estimates that the e-commerce behemoth's digital ad revenue will hit $6 billion in 2018, which would be much higher than the $1.77 billion it did in 2017. He projects it to reach $14 billion in 2020.Amazon's e-commerce and digital advertising synergy is "one of the best combinations of anyone in the industry," Thill said. What Biden's projected victory means for the energy industry

Goldman's Kris Dawsey explains what it means:
 Retail <keyword id="145025" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="gasoline">gasoline</keyword> prices have declined roughly 40¢/gallon since August, with regular unleaded reaching $3.20/gallon on a national average basis. This has likely been a welcome support for consumer sentiment, given negativity surrounding the recent government shutdown. It is typical for gasoline prices to decline during this period of the year, with prices usually reaching a seasonal peak in May, declining through the summer and fall, and then hitting a trough in December.
On a seasonally-adjusted basis, prices have still fallen, but the recent decline is less striking. In light of the decline in retail gasoline prices over the past year and our projections for 2014, we see a modest positive growth boost in the pipeline, perhaps in the order of one- to two-tenths. This would represent a favorable tailwind, but not a game-changer on the outlook.

A 'Tailwind' But Not A 'Gamechanger' - Goldman Sachs Explains The Impact Of Tumbling Gas Prices

It is acknowledgement that the probability of RUBI shares trading lower is high as it's a broken growth Company with strategic concerns." Boenning &amp; Scattergood (NEUTRAL): "Key focus was on progress towards overcoming header bidding headwinds, and while progress was made we do not believe it was enough to improve investor confidence much. Together with other factors such as a choppy overall ad environment due to U.S. election dynamics and difficulties managing the transition to mobile, header bidding has created a perfect storm and limited visibility on ad spend."Cantor Fitzgerald (HOLD): "We believe any turnaround at RUBI is likely to take several quarters, given 1) further leakage of premium inventory to competitors' desktop header bidding systems, 2) FastLane's relatively small size at 16% of spend, and 3) increase in buyers choosing self-service over Rubicon's managed services (Chango). But buried in the discussion of origination, opening 401ks to private investments, and hybrid equity-replacement products were some unusual management tactics that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marc-rowan-profile-ceo-apollo-global-management-leon-black-2021-8rrowan-teaser">CEO Marc Rowan</a> said the firm is using to motivate its employees."We have woken the team up at 4:30 a.m. in the morning for meetings to prove to them that we need to do a wake-up call and something different," Rowan said. "We've had outside speakers come in to scare the bejesus out of people. We've had cautionary tales." We, and presumably you, have a lot of questions. How do you wake people up at 4:30 a.m. without running into a wall of do-not-disturb messages? Which outside speakers did Apollo tap to scare the pants off its people? Are we talking Lehman Brothers scary?We contacted Apollo for more specifics, but the firm declined to comment. While the how is a mystery, Rowan was very clear about the why. The Apollo cofounder and CEO believes making money won't be as easy as it once was. "We believe that assets are what is going to be scarce rather than capital," Rowan said, referring to an environment of more limited investment opportunities. On Tuesday, Rowan told investors that the firm has also put its own twist on the time-honored management tradition of a celebratory pizza party, replacing the pie with frozen yogurt."The single best decision I've made in the past 12 months was to personally buy a frozen yogurt machine," Rowan said. "We open the frozen yogurt machine when we have a team win. It turns out people prefer frozen yogurt to money."Rowan, is of course, joking that people prefer froyo to money (and said as much). Apollo's professionals are particularly well-paid even in the private equity industry. The point is that culture is a very serious business at Apollo. And Rowan spends half his time managing the firm's 200 leaders."How do we get the organization to play to win and not just to play not to lose probably consumes most of our management time," Rowan said.<h2 id="f46bf929-7d84-49b3-a675-d9ec0b56f508">New tailwinds</h2>Today, Apollo manages close to $700 billion in assets, including a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apollo-ceo-marc-rowan-defends-private-credit-from-jamie-dimon-2024-5">massive business underwriting loans</a>. But on Tuesday, Rowan credited the firm's success since going public in 2008 to being "lucky" and just "smart" enough to be in the right place at the right time. This allowed it to reap the benefits of post-crisis low interest rates and its early investments in life insurance and retirement.Now, with interest rates high, the tailwinds are gone for Apollo and the industry as a whole, he said.Rowan said the key is to position the firm in front of the right tailwinds, just like it did to get where it is today. He identified four favorable market trends.The first is the need for massive infrastructure investment into renewable energy, utilities and power more broadly, and data centers. These are long and complicated projects that require creativity, Rowan said."These long-term solutions across a variety of cost of capital are not really appropriate for bank balance sheets who fund themselves short," Rowan said. "They're not really appropriate for the plain vanilla of the investment grade marketplace. We, and institutional investors, are the long-dated capital necessary to do this."The second is the opportunity in retirement. There is between $12 to $13 trillion in 401ks, but as of now, that capital is "mostly" invested into the S&amp;P 500, which is largely weighted towards a few big companies."I jokingly say sometimes, 'We levered the entire retirement of America to Nvidia's performance,'" Rowan said. "It just doesn't seem smart."Rowan said he believes a change in presidential administration will open up private, illiquid investments to 401ks.Rowan also noted that individual investors, especially the more sophisticated "family offices" will provide a tailwind, and maybe some creative new ideas for the firm.Finally, he returned to a favorite theme, a reshaping of the private and public markets."What if it's not public is risky and private is safe?" Rowan said. "What if private is both safe and risky? And public is safe and risky? We think nothing of Nvidia going 20% to 30% in a day."Rowan said the firm's ability to use capital that's been earmarked for the "riskier" alternatives bucket to create investment-grade debt is opening access to the larger and more conservative "fixed income" bucket of cash from institutional investors.He posited a "hybrid" future, also touting the firm's $60 to $70 billion Hybrid business, where investors will own equity that is private (think private equity without the leverage)."Active management may actually be both active management of buying and selling stocks, but active management may also be the active running of companies," Rowan said.

Garages come with electrical-vehicle charging. Energy-efficient appliances, including electric heat pumps and induction stoves, are installed. Airtight insulation prevents leaks that waste energy. Fresh-air systems keep indoor air clean. The homes use so little energy that solar could offset most or all energy utility costs.The project was developed by Beazer Homes, one of the largest US homebuilders. Several years ago, the company set a goal that by 2025, all its new homes would meet the US Department of Energy's "Zero Energy Ready" <a target="_blank" href="https://www.energy.gov/eere/buildings/zero-energy-ready-home-program">certification</a>. Its CEO, Allan Merrill, said Beazer was close to meeting the goal.The effort has come at a cost; Merrill said climate-friendly features can add $10,000 to $30,000 to construction and that the market for these homes is still emerging. It's also a precarious time, with so many Americans struggling to afford a home and the reelection of Donald Trump threatening to reverse many environmental regulations. But there are tailwinds, including state laws that require industries like utilities and real estate to decarbonize and a record amount of renewable-energy projects across the US.Merrill thinks the up-front investment will be worth it in the long term, even if shareholders haven't rewarded Beazer yet. Prioritizing sustainability helps the company attract the best talent, he said, and homeowners are increasingly concerned about rising utility costs. Now Beazer has to educate customers and the broader real-estate market about the value of green homes."Leadership requires investment," Merrill said. "We made a conscious decision to make less money on all of these homes. Beazer estimated that owners of the new homes in Parkville would save about $453 a month in energy-utility costs compared with owners of older homes in town, and $311 a month compared with owners of a typical new build. Better indoor air quality is a selling point for buyers with asthma or other respiratory problems. Renewable energy and electric appliances don't emit fossil fuels."The tricky thing is when people walk in, they're not wearing a button that tells you which of those issues are relevant to them," Merrill said. "That's the discovery process. It's finding a way to connect what we've done to each buyer."He said another challenge is that home appraisals generally don't account for energy efficiency or renewable-energy technologies.Woody Fincham, a residential appraiser in Charlottesville, Virginia, who also teaches courses on sustainable homes for the Appraisal Institute, says few appraisers have the expertise. But he argued that the problem is broader. Real-estate agents need to market green features so that prospective buyers understand their value, which then has to be communicated to mortgage lenders who can seek out qualified appraisers.Still, there's no guarantee that a green home can fetch a higher price, because the market largely depends on what's sold nearby."If you're in a community where people put a lot of value on efficiency — and there are some parts of the country where they do — the appraisal will be able to show that the market is willing to pay more," Andrew Pizor, a senior attorney at the National Consumer Law Center, said. "But if you're in a community where people don't care about that kind of thing, the appraiser is going to compare prices and likely find that no one's willing to pay extra for it."Two Democrats in Congress have proposed legislation that would require appraisals to consider a home's energy use compared with that of nearby properties, as well as whether the home has energy-efficient appliances, solar panels, and EV charging. The bill would also require additional training for appraisers.But it hasn't passed, and Merrill said Beazer isn't waiting around.

We estimate Q3 growth decelerated to 18% from 22% in Q2 and see further deceleration to 15% in Q4 2024 and 13% in Q1 2025," CFRA senior equity analyst Angelo Zino wrote. He added that the challenge in the coming quarters will be to keep up with strong growth compared to the year-ago quarters. "We think year-over-year deceleration is due to lapping strong growth from China-based advertisers as well as strong Reels impression growth from a year ago. A pickup in overseas demand is seen as the key growth driver for the region in 2024.
