New Delhi, The government on Tuesday increased the <keyword id="14716344" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="windfall-profit-tax" source="Orion">windfall profit tax</keyword> on <keyword id="45185" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crude-oil" source="Orion">crude oil</keyword> produced in the country and reduced the levy on exports of diesel. The tax, levied in the form of Special Additional Excise Duty or SAED, on domestically produced crude oil was increased to Rs 9,800 per tonne from Rs 9,050 a tonne, according to an official notification. SAED on the export of diesel was reduced to Rs 2 per litre from Rs 4 a litre and on <keyword id="19342328" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jet-fuel-or-ATF" source="Orion">jet fuel or ATF</keyword> to nil from Rs 1, the notification said. SAED on export of petrol will continue to be zero. The new tax rates will come into effect from Wednesday. India first imposed <keyword id="2378386" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="windfall-profit" source="Orion">windfall profit</keyword> taxes on July 1 last year, joining a growing number of nations that tax supernormal profits of energy companies. At that time, export duties of Rs 6 per litre (USD 12 per barrel) each were levied on petrol and ATF and Rs 13 a litre (USD 26 a barrel) on diesel. A Rs 23,250 per tonne (USD 40 per barrel) windfall profit tax on crude oil produced by companies such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) was also levied. The tax rates are reviewed every fortnight based on average oil prices in the previous two weeks. A windfall tax is levied on domestic crude oil if rates of the global benchmark rise above USD 75 per barrel. Export of diesel, ATF and petrol attract the levy if product cracks (or margins) rise above USD 20 per barrel. Product cracks or margins are the difference between crude oil (raw material) and finished petroleum products. International crude oil prices averaged USD 90.17 per barrel in October. The levy on domestic crude oil dropped to nil in the first half of April as international crude oil prices fell but was back in the second half in step with a rise in rates. Levy on diesel became nil in April but the levy was brought back in August. Levy on ATF became nil in March and was brought back in second half of August. The export tax on petrol was scrapped in the very first review. Crude oil pumped out of the ground and from below the seabed is refined and converted into fuels like petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF). Reliance Industries Ltd, which operates the world's largest single-location oil refinery complex at Jamnagar in Gujarat, and Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy are primary exporters of fuel in the country.

For the fourth quarter of FY23, the pure-play engineering services company recorded Rs 2,096 crore, a growth of 19 per cent YoY, with a net profit of more than Rs 309 crore, a 18 per cent growth. During the quarter, LTTS won a $40 million deal and three $10 million plus total contract value (TCV) deals. "FY23 was a landmark year for us as we crossed a billion dollars in revenue run rate and Rs 1,000 crore in annual profits. Our EBIT margin was the highest ever at 18.5 per cent driven by a strong focus on building a robust and sustainable operating model," said Amit Chadha, CEO and Managing Director, L&amp;T Technology Services Ltd. The combination of steady growth and expanding operating margin has led to an 18 per cent CAGR in profits over the last 5 years, he added. At the end of Q4 FY23, the patents portfolio of L&amp;T Technology Services stood at 1,090, out of which 727 are co-authored with its customers and the rest are filed by LTTS. The company currently has 22,233 employees. LTTS's customer base includes 69 Fortune 500 companies and 57 of the world's top ER&amp;D companies, across industrial products, medical devices, transportation, telecom &amp; hi-tech, and the process industries. "We are optimistic about the future and look for another year of strong growth as we partner with the top ER&amp;D companies globally in developing next generation products", said Chadha. L&T Technology Services logs 22% growth in revenue, net profit in FY23

India's largest telecom operator <keyword id="19896911" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reliance Jio" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reliance Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> on Monday posted a 13 per cent year-on-year rise in its standalone net profit at Rs 5,337 crore in March quarter. Its revenue from operations for Q4FY24 came in at Rs 25,959 crore, up 11 per cent over the year-ago period. The net profit was pegged at Rs 5,337 crore for just-ended quarter, up from Rs 4,716 crore in the fourth quarter of FY23, which translated into a 13.16 per cent increase. According to a BSE filing by the company, for the full FY24, the net profit stood at Rs 20,466 crore, which was 12.4 per cent higher than that of FY23. The revenue for full fiscal ended March 2024 was Rs 1,00,119 crore, up 10.2 per cent over the preceding fiscal. Reliance Jio Q4 net profit rises over 13% to ₹5,337 crore

However, on a quarter on quarter comparison, its profits fell by 5% as it was hit by increased costs across streams — like travel expenses in addition to employee benefit costs. The company’s profit grew by 5% compared to last year. “It has been a challenging quarter from a cost management perspective. Our Q1 operating margin of 23.1% reflects the impact of our annual salary increase, the elevated cost of managing the talent churn and gradually normalizing travel expenses,” said Samir Seksaria, CFO of TCS. These costs loaded on to the company’s books and took the sheen off 16% revenue growth on a year-on-year comparison. TCS profits grows at 5%, hit by salary hikes, talent churn and travel costs

Jefferies outlines the overlooked measure of corporate profitability that's pointing towards bigger stock gains ahead

The country's sixth biggest IT services company by revenues, <keyword id="13843427" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ltimindtree" source="Orion">LTIMindtree</keyword>, reported a decline in September quarter net profit at Rs 1,162 crore. The city-headquartered company had a net profit of Rs 1,189 crore in the year-ago period, and the same stood at Rs 1,152 crore in the preceding June quarter. Its overall revenues grew 8.2% to Rs 8,905 crore for the reporting quarter, from Rs 8,228 crore in the year-ago period and Rs 8,702 crore in the June quarter. However, there was a sharper contraction in the operating profit margin to 16%, as against 17.5% in the year-ago period, which seems to have been the biggest reason for the decline in the overall profits. The company's managing director and chief executive <keyword id="214484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Debashis-Chatterjee" source="Orion">Debashis Chatterjee</keyword> said the margins were impacted by the wage hikes given out from July 1, and exuded confidence of gains on the same to exit the fiscal year at 17-18%. He said the company is not witnessing any pressures on margins despite the volatile economic environment at present. Deal pipeline is also flowing, and the company reported new wins of USD 1.3 billion for the reporting quarter, he said, adding that discretionary demand is being replaced with long-term engagements focused on cost optimization. The overall employee base increased to 83,532 at the end of September, which was up from 82,738 in June, but down from 86,936 in the year-ago period. Chatterjee said 1,400 freshers joined in the reporting quarter, and the attrition is stable at 15.2%. The company will be training 10,000 of its employees on artificial intelligence in the December quarter, Chatterjee said, adding that it is already engaged in 20 projects which have generative AI components in it. The company scrip closed 1.11% down at Rs 5,156.90 a piece on the BSE, as against a correction of 0.83% on the benchmark.

LTIMindtree Q2 net profit declines as profit margin contracts

Since the late 1970s, when American companies were fat and complacent, the focus of American capitalism has been on the bottom line.
Spurred on by activist shareholders, private-equity firms, and bonuses based on stock prices, corporate managers have become obsessed with maximizing quarterly <keyword id="6409995" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="profits">profits</keyword>.
This new focus has produced remarkable results.

Unfortunately, this obsession with profit maximization has come at a cost.
By focusing their entire effort on the bottom line, many American companies have reduced their value to the other constituencies that great companies serve, namely:

<li>employees, and</li>
<li>society.</li>
</ul>
One result of the profit obsession, for example, is that big American companies are now paying the lowest <keyword id="6356975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Wages">wages</keyword> as a percent of the economy in history. (See chart).

Both of these efficiency initiatives help "maximize profit," at least in the near term.
But they hurt the economy.
And they also hurt our companies' overall growth rates.
Why?
Because every dime that companies pay out in wages and capital investment becomes revenue for other companies.

They spend nearly everything they earn buying food, clothes, gas, houses, entertainment, and other products and services. This money then becomes profits and wages for companies that provide those products and services. And so on.
The problem in the American economy right now is not that there isn't enough investment capital. There's plenty of it. (There's so much of it, in fact, that some companies don't even know what to do with it: Witness the massive cash mountains building up at companies like Apple, Cisco, Google, Bank of America, JP Morgan, et al.)
The problem in the U.S. economy is that rank-and-file American consumers are over-indebted, under-employed, and broke.
And these consumers account for a staggering 70% of the spending in the U.S. economy.
To restore the economy to health, we need to persuade our companies to balance their priorities — to share more of their wealth with the employees who help earn it.
More broadly, we need to persuade our companies to focus on creating value for all of their constituencies, not just shareholders.

Walmart employs 1.4 million Americans, approximately 1% of the entire American workforce. The average full-time Walmart associate makes $12 an hour — $480 a week and $25,000 a year. That's just above the poverty line.
These 1.4 million Americans who are dedicating their lives to making Walmart successful, in other words, are paid so little that they're nearly poor. Walmart itself made $27 billion of operating profit in 2011. If Walmart were to give each of its U.S. associates a $5,000 raise, it would cost the company $7 billion a year. This would reduce Walmart's operating profit to a still-extremely-healthy $20 billion. It would also give 1.4 million hard-working Americans another $100 a week to spend. And, chances are, they'd spend a lot of it at Walmart.
The same can be said for Bank of America, Citigroup, and many other huge American companies that are furiously engaged in finding ways to fire people and cut costs. In addition to their massively profitable Wall Street operations, these banks have huge branch networks in which tellers and local loan officers make modest salaries while serving their communities. Some of them would undoubtedly be grateful for a raise. And they'd probably spend it close to home.
The point is that our three-decade drive to make our companies more efficient has been spectacularly successful — so successful that, in the interests of "maximizing profits," we're now starving the key growth driver of the economy, average Americans.

They need to aim to earn a reasonable profit, not a "maximized" one.
And they need to reinvest their excess profits in creating more value for their other constituencies, namely customers, employees, and society.
"Fairness" and "sharing" have become dirty words in our country, words that immediately get the speaker branded a "liberal" or "communist." This is depressing. Fairness and sharing aren't political concepts, and the fact that they're interpreted that way shows just how polarized the country has become.
But given that half the country now associates "voluntary sharing" with "communism," arguing that companies should share their wealth because it's the right thing to do won't get us very far.
So let's just base the argument on self-interest.
It is very much in companies' self-interest to pay employees more.
If companies pay their employees more, they'll increase loyalty, reduce turnover, and get better employees. Over the long term, this should reduce training and hiring costs. By increasing customer satisfaction, it should also increase revenue. By paying their employees more, companies will also put more money in the hands of American consumers, who will then turn around and use it to buy products and services from American companies. So the companies will help accelerate the growth of the economy as a whole. And as the economy grows, so will the companies. This, in turn, will help create more long-term shareholder value.
In short, to restore our economy and society to health, we need a new corporate mission in America.
We need to stop maximizing profit and start maximizing value.

Diversified entity <keyword id="6357073" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="itc" source="Orion">ITC</keyword> Ltd on Thursday reported a 22.66 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 5,225.02 crore in the fourth quarter ended March 2023. The company had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 4,259.68 crore in the year-ago period, ITC Ltd said in a regulatory filing. Its consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 19,058.29 crore against Rs 17,754.02 crore in Q4 FY22. The total expenses also rose to Rs 12,907.84 crore from Rs 12,632.29 crore a year ago. For the fiscal ended March 31, 2023, consolidated net profit was Rs 19,427.68 crore compared to Rs 15,485.65 crore in FY22. In FY23, its consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 76,518.21 crore against Rs 65,204.96 crore in the year-ago period. ITC Q4 net profit rises 22.66% to ₹5,225 crore

The Indian Energy Exchange (<keyword id="19906388" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IEX" source="keywords">IEX</keyword>) has posted a 9.5 per cent rise in <keyword id="20569223" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consolidated-profit" source="keywords">consolidated profit</keyword> after tax at Rs 96.7 crore for the March 2024 quarter on account of higher <keyword id="19942932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income" source="keywords">income</keyword>. It had clocked Rs 88.34 crore profit after tax (PAT) during the fourth quarter of the last fiscal, the company said in an exchange filing on Wednesday. The company's total income rose to Rs 149.28 crore, from Rs 129.58 crore in January-March FY23. During the period under review, its expenses stood at Rs 22.65 crore, as against Rs 19.52 crore a year ago. In FY24, the consolidated PAT rose 14.7 per cent to Rs 350.78 crore, from Rs 305.88 crore in FY23. Income for the full year was at Rs 550.84 crore, up from Rs 474.10 crore. The Board of Directors of the company announced a final dividend of Rs 1.50 for FY24. Sharing business updates, IEX said 110.1 billion units of electricity traded on its platform during the fiscal year 2023-24, registering a year-on-year (y-o-y) increase of 13.7 per cent. The DAM (day-ahead market) prices on the exchange declined to Rs 5.24/unit in FY24, lower by 12 per cent y-o-y compared with Rs 5.94/unit in FY23. During <keyword id="20028449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q4" source="keywords">Q4</keyword> FY24, IEX achieved 30.1 BU volume across all segments, registering an increase of 15.5 per cent on y-o-y basis. This volume comprises 25.9 BU from the conventional power market segment, 1 BU from the green market segment, and 32.48 lac Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) (equivalent to 3.2 BU). REC traded volume in the fourth quarter of 2023-24 increased by 98 per cent on y-o-y basis. The DAM prices on the exchange lowered to Rs 4.89/unit in January-March 2024, a decline of 20 per cent y-o-y compared with Rs 6.08/unit a year ago. IEX Q4 net profit grows 9.5% to ₹97 crore

New Delhi, May 22 () <keyword id="6986952" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IDFC-First-Bank">IDFC First Bank</keyword> on Friday reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 76.36 crore for January-March 2020. The private sector lender had posted a loss of Rs 212 crore during the corresponding January-March quarter a year ago. Sequentially, there was a net loss of Rs 1,631.59 crore in the third quarter ended December 2019. The bank said that in view of accounting for IDFC - CFL (Capital First Ltd) merger from appointed date of October 1, 2018, the figures of the year ended March 31, 2020, are not comparable. The figures for the previous quarter/year have been regrouped wherever necessary in order to make them comparable, IDFC First Bank said in a regulatory filing. Total income during the fourth quarter of FY20 rose to Rs 4,553 crore as against Rs 3,971 crore during the same period of FY19. For the full year 2019-20, the bank witnessed widening of net loss at Rs 2,843.39 crore as against Rs 1,907.88 crore in the previous fiscal. Income during the year rose to Rs 17,962.72 crore from Rs 13,056.17 crore. On the asset front, the gross non performing assets (NPAs) or bad loans as a percentage of gross loans as on March 31, 2020 increased to 2.60 per cent from 2.43 per cent by year ago same period. However, net NPAs improved to 0.94 per cent as against 1.27 per cent. IDFC First Bank said that the board at its meeting had an enabling resolution for borrowing of funds through issue of debt instruments, on private placement basis, up to an amount not exceeding Rs 5,000 crore. The board of directors has not proposed any dividend for FY 2019-20, the bank said. Citing an RBI circular on dividend, it said banks have been advised that in an environment of heightened uncertainty caused by COVID-19, it is important that banks conserve capital to retain their capacity to support the economy and absorb losses. This restriction shall be reassessed by the Reserve Bank based on the financial results of bank, it added. The extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic will impact the bank's results will depend on future developments, which are highly uncertain, including, among other things, any new information concerning the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic and any action to contain its spread or mitigate its impact whether government-mandated or elected by the bank. "The bank's capital and liquidity position is strong and would continue to be the focus area for the bank during this period," it said. The bank said as per RBI March guidelines on regulatory package, it has granted a moratorium of three months on the payment of all installments and / or interest, as applicable, falling due between March 1, 2020 and May 31, 2020 to all eligible borrowers. The bank has created additional provisions amounting to Rs 225 crore during Q4 FY2020 against the potential impact of COVID-19 on standard assets based on all the available information at this point in time. Provisions for bad loans and contingencies for the quarter under review were of Rs 412.38 crore, lower than Rs 655.31 crore parked aside a year ago. V Vaidyanathan, managing director and CEO, IDFC First Bank, said, "We are happy to inform that deposits for our Bank are coming thick and strong. In Q4 FY20, "we saw strong inflows into our bank as retail deposits increased by Rs 4,658 crore, despite the turmoil in the markets. Once the lockdown lifts, things will only get better for both lending as well as deposits as the economic activity will pick up. We are already seeing this that where locations are opening up from lockdown, demand is strong", he said. Further, by raising Rs 2,000 crore of fresh equity capital and reaching strong capital adequacy of 15.5 per cent, the bank is in a strong position to grow from here on, he said. IDFC First Bank posts Rs 76.36 cr net profit in March quarter

<ul><li><keyword id="143842" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mobikwik">Mobikwik</keyword>, a digital payments company, has said that its payment gateway business has turned profitable. </li><li>With an IPO in mind, the company is now aiming for a ₹1.4 lakh crore annual payment volume from the payment gateway business.</li><li>Earlier in July, Mobikwik had reported a funding of ₹8.67 crores. </li></ul>Mobikwik, one of India’s leading digital payments companies, has claimed that its payment gateways vertical had turned profitable since April 2019. “Our focus on building the best tech stack for our merchants is evident in the growth and success of our Payment Gateway business. Our product and user experience (UX) philosophy is to keep the user experience simple and ultra fast. Payment Gateway is one of our fastest growing verticals and will play an instrumental role in our path to profitability,” said Upasana Taku, Co-Founder, MobiKwik. With this, the payments company now aims to ₹1.4 lakh crore annual payment volume for its payment gateway business. As a payment gateway, Mobikwik finds clients in businesses like Uber, IRCTC, Dream11, Bajaj Finance, Zomato, Grofers, Blue Dart, Delhivery, Dominos, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, etc. “Over 94 million unique cards are saved on MobiKwik PG platform; this includes 20 million credit cards which is 50% of all credit cards issued in India,” said the company’s official statement. In July, the company had also announced a new round of funding of ₹8.67 crore from Trifecta Capital and NDTV. Its previous investors include Sequoia Capital and American Express among others. Paytm claims to hold over 50% of the market share and has said that it does 400 million transactions per month; is five times more than its next competitor. A report by Credit Suisse Group AG says that the Indian digital payments market will increase five-fold from the current $200 billion to $1 trillion by the year 2023.
